I’d like to keep two female garters (eastern and plains) in one tank. I’m torn between a 36X18X16 40 breeder vs a 48X12X16 40 long.

Do you think one is better than the other? Why?

Thanks!

I have always had good luck keeping adult groups in 40 breeders. No scientific reasoning, just what works for me.

I always gave the most room possible.

Thank you for the input! I was wondering if people felt there was much difference in benefit between one tank’s extra length vs the other tank’s extra width based on how snakes use space. I’m still pretty new to it all.

I like the extra width so I have room to put a large (3-4 gallon) water area with filtration and a basking perch on the opposite end. They really seem to enjoy it.

I don't really think that there is a right and wrong answer between the two. Either one can give plenty of room if set up properly.

Since both those tanks have the same floor area it really comes down to how you want to set the tank up.

Great; thanks the kind of advice I’m looking for. Thank you!

How deep and wide do you make the water feature? Thanks.

I use plastic tubs that measure approximately 16" long x 12" wide x 8" tall and build up the substrate around it. I tried to add a pic but I don't remember how to add pics on here anymore..lol

Also, I put a small air driven filter in the water, similar to what is used for fish fry.

Cool. Thanks for the update. That sounds a lot more convenient than siliconing in a partition.

No worries about the picture. To post, you have to choose the “go advanced” reply option, click “manage attachments,” which opens a new screen, and then use “add files” at the top right and “choose file” to select a photo from your phone or computer.

Thank you for posting this poll, I've been wondering the thing. But is you have one male, and one female, What should be the size of each individual tanks?
They're also very young & small, female is 11in; and the male is 10in.

Nevermind, I realized Garters could be housed together
