So I caught this northwestern garter snake a few days ago, and I decided I would try to keep it. Right now he is in a 20 gallon tank with aspen bedding, a 40 watt heat bulb, with plenty of logs and plants for him to climb and hide in, as well as a large water dish. But the problem Is that I can’t find any care sheets on this particular species, and I’m not sure if northwesterns differ in terms of care compared to other species. He seems to be doing fine, and is extremely active. If somebody could give me some advice on how to care for this species that would be fantastic!

I'd suggest not using aspen bedding. If it is the shavings kind it can cause serious injury if digested. Care is very similar to garters. These are slugs eating monsters and love small earthworms too.

If your using shredded aspen just feed them in a seperate container.
