OMG...I found Babies!!!! http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/9136/dancexc1.gif

I still don't know how many...but I'll see later, there's too much news paper and they could be under some pages.

try worms??

DEKAN
08-10-2007, 10:54 AM
Thanx :D

I'll try worms tomorow...and tomorrow I'll take the mom to the vet she refused the scented pinkies.

Strange she had only 6 babies...Four of them have orange stripes but the other two have yellow stripes, like the mom. Could this be females and males or it has nothing to do with it?

By the way could someone put a pic of the guppies?...I think it's a different kind, cause in Mexico Gupies are these: http://img113.imageshack.us/img113/234/copulacionrq5.jpg

Or is it the same?

thanx in advance

Very cool.....do we still not know what species of garter this is???? I know I can't really tell from the baby pics. Nothing like I've ever seen before and I know the pic of moma you had wasn't really familiar either?????
Oh, as far as the colour determining sex....really doubt it, I don't think there are any garters that show sexually dimorphic colours. And as for the guppies.....yep that's them. There are usually cheaper ones sold at the petstore called "feeder guppies".....just ask I'm sure they'll know what you're talking about. Again congrats!!!!:D

Ohhh...ok, I'll look for them today, cause I've just seen the colorfull ones :P

And yep, all of the babies are almost black not dark-green like the mom, these one have orange, the other 2 are the same but with a green-yellow stripes :o

Congratulations Robert! I'm really pleased for you! As Don says, they won't eat for the first few days, so don't worry. Being a somewhat aquatic species, small fish such as feeder guppies would make an excellent first meal. Good luck and keep us posted.

@Roy: They are Thamnophis melanogaster melanogaster.

Congrats on your new arrivals.
As others stated, they won't eat for the first couple days or until their first shed.
Try feeding them small worms or feeder guppies, movement will help. Put the guppies in a shallow dish of water so that only the bottom half of the fish gets wet. They will move around a lot and that's what you need to attract the attention of the newbies.
Also, just a word of caution. Watch when you feed them that there aren't any fights over food if you use worms. Remember they are new to the world and haven't had a lot of experience. 2 can go after the same worm and if one doesn't let go and the other doesn't stop eating........ it's never a good turn out.
Congrats again and keep us updated.

Well I was talking to the vet, wich is going to do all the paperwork for my garter to be registered, he said that the main problem for export are the customs (pay duty) in the border. And unfortunatelly I don't know people on the border to ask the legal aspects :( as these are born in captivity, I may sell them if I want to...but, they are so cute, I'm planning to set free one or two into their habitat.

Well here are more pictures...this one is the yellow striped, and yep...black belly too :D

Congratulations, they look very pretty! Hopefully they'll start eating soon:)

I think more people than you think are interested in them, but like James says, get to know your laws before you get into this adventure. It's nice to hear that you'll put some back in the wild.

DEKAN
08-10-2007, 05:49 PM
Yep don't worry...I'm learning more and more, to legalize a wild animal it's a hard process (photos, medical certificates, photos of the enclosure, conditions, etc.) It's a free process in my country but I do not have the time, so I prefer to pay $40 dlls to my vet to do it :p

The terms are...in small words, that my snake is going to be declared property of the nation under my custody, the gouverment gives permission for normal people to breed wild animals under captivity, but only certain species, they check that they are kept in good conditions and not affecting the habitat, so the babies are going to be 100% mine. Still I don't think I could sell them, I'm going to try buying a male or another baby melanogaster's, and let's see what happens

I'll talk to him on the next week maybe he found something about the export...

08-11-2007, 09:46 AM
How many babies you have greatly depends on what species, the length of the snake and the age. I think the average is a bit more normally for your species, but that's maybe for next year ;)

DEKAN
08-11-2007, 06:52 PM
I really hope so :D

And news Finally the trout worked...thanx adamanteus, and also I did a trick  I put a transparent bowl with Guppies (male and female) well a trick that wasn't supposed to be a trcik lol... I was so desperate, it was about 25 days since her last meal and I said what could I loose I hope that the guppies don't have parasites, so I put the fish in the bowl and then she saw the movement and spent a couple of minutes chasing them on the outside, just going around the bowl, so I put some trout in a plate really close to the bowl, and then she smell them and suddenly she finished all the trout, I chopped a few big pieces and she ate all, then I remmembered that I had a pinkie alive in a box  but at that time she was already satisfied, so at the end of the week I'll try again with pinkies.

And no "feeder guppies" on any pet store =( hope that the trout work for the babies too :o

Hey...a friend told me that he gave to his baby garter Sea Monkyes, he bought a bag full of eggs . Have you tried this?

ssssnakeluvr
08-11-2007, 09:44 PM
sea monkeys...or brine shrimp aren't really on the list for garters to eat...also they are small, would take a bunch to feed a baby garter if th ey ate them.

Guppy males would be the best try I think.
Maybe you can get some hatchlings of the fish that you fed to thier mother too?

DEKAN
08-12-2007, 06:02 PM
Well the mom keeps eating...today she ate all the trout and in seconds the guppies were gone too :o for my luck the guppies are kept in much better conditions than the others, but it was just a price for her, no more alive food.

So all of this was normal so far....but then I saw her and I realize that she is longer, when I bought her was like 40cm (15.6 inches) now its 50cm (19.7 inches). When I was at the vet's clinic he told me that she was little but could be a lot more big. Is it the only specie that have litter so soon, even if she's not at her adult size?....or every garter is like that? It's there any record of the length of an adult of T. Melanogaster?

And no luck with the little ones, that "feeder guppies" are hard to find :(

By the way do you keep all your babies in the same tank?

A small pic of the little ones in another tank

I know...too many questions. Sorry about that

Robert, You commented about your "mother" Garters size. Here is a link to reptiles of Mexico. It will give some limited details on your snake

Hope it helps with some of your questions.

Ofcourse not a problem... Tomorrow I'll take a better pictures I'm going to place each one alone and put some worms, today it's the 3rth day and no sign of feeding =( , my sisters just keep staring at them maybe thats the reason, they are scared lol...they are so shy :o and they run from everything.

Have you tried earthworms for the little ones? You can cut them in a good size and the movement triggers them sometimes. But the guppies are usually and even better trigger.

And it could well be that your sister scares them a bit... I would try to leave them alone for a couple of days...

Good luck with them :)

DEKAN
08-14-2007, 01:23 PM
Yep...they can be at the top of an earthworm and nothing happens, and in any pet stores sell the "feeder guppies" =( ...they even cancelled the shipment of wild guppies (I guess because the worms and stuff)...so, the only fish that can be found with small size are Neon Tetra ( I don't think they may help, that colors...could be toxic? I don't know) and Zebra Danio (like 3 dlls each )

Well in the meanwhile I bought guppies to breed them...I know it's gonna take a quite long time but, could be handy on a emergency.

There is a big market of fish...ofcourse no guaranty on them, but you can find anything...It's impressive the amount of species, but it's quite far, probably y I would go on friday... I'm worry about those babies =P
