After joining about a year ago (?), in anticipation of getting garters, I got distracted with other species and projects. So, a rosy boa, a pittuophis, numerous fish, and a few birds later, I'm looking at this project again!

Plans are for two, maybe three male T. radix plains garters, wild type (although, I'm not breeding, and won't care what they might be het. for), and a long planted tank (preferably four feet, maybe a 40 gallon long). Hard to find for a reasonable price. All my other tanks are 36" long 40 breeder size foot print, and I think an active animal can use a bit more space - I know my cornsnake would agree.

Tank will be planted, with a carved foam background for rocky ledges.

Anyway, been reading, just to see what everyone is up to so far, and look at availability from spring litters (correct term?).

Welcome back. Over the next two three months breeders are going to start having litters and there will be stuff available. Look forward to seeing the finished design of your enclosure.

Thanks.
Looking forward to it. I've made several planted tanks, but the foam background will be new for me.

From what I gather, T. radix, rarely strikes, can be raised on F/T mice, can be housed in small groups, and the males will generally not get as big as the females.
Is that correct?

I've looked at numerous care sheets (inc. the one here), many sites, etc., but there seems to be some variation among the genus, so, I want to ensure a good fit.

If this is your first foam background I advise doing a smaller test run on a piece of cardboard or something.
When done properly they're really simple but little mistakes can ruin it
