I had to dispatch a baby snake today. :( Dog got it, open wound with clearly completely severed spine, no chance of good outcome. I smashed the head, which was very quick. Is this the best method with an adult as well?

It probably is at this point. In the past I have used CO2 but have read there may still be pain. Your method is violent but effective in ending their suffering, I used that method a month ago for a mower injured garter. I didn't like doing it but it had to be done. Sorry to hear about this situation.

Right by where we found the albino garter we have my brother ran over a garter while we were riding our bikes. It had some gut protruding. We talked about what to do but I said there wasn't anything that could be done and we crushed it's head with a bike. It is the most humane, quick way I can think of. You made the right choice.
