Well I'm pretty bored right now, so I thought that it'd be pretty cool if everyone would post the pictures of the baby snakes that they have gotten this year. If everyone helps out, we'll have hundreds of pictures! :D

chicken hart??? eyww! lol
are you not nervous about feeding them all together?

Yes, the hearts of chicken. I buy them in our supermarket. They sell them as catfood.
I already give chickenheart (amongst a lot of other things) to my Thamnophis?nerodia?natrix for more than 35 year.
Works well and never gave a problem. Ofcourse I dust the food with vitamins/minerals/calcium.

No I am not nervous about that.
I put small pieces in the foodbowl. That small that they hardly can take it away from eachother. Never a problem with that.

I wouldn't know that.
I do not live there.
I am Dutch and here, in the Netherlands, there is no law to forbid the keeping of gartersnakes.

I know this thread is supposed to be pics
and I will certainly post later
but I just couldn't help posting appropriate song lyrics
(most of ours aren't pink though)

Baby Snakes
Late at night is when they come out
Baby Snakes
Sure you know what I'm talkin' about
Pink 'n wet
They make the best kinda pet
Baby
Baby
Snakes

I looked around
An' there's a couple right near me
Baby Snakes
Maybe I think they can probably hear me
Pink 'n wet
I'll take all I can get

Stefan-A
08-03-2007, 02:06 PM
Oh you should see how tiny they are in my nightmares. :D About the size of 0.7 pencil lead. :p

How big is that tetra compared to a hatchling grass snake? Or, newborn garters compared to hatchling grass snakes.

adamanteus
08-03-2007, 02:12 PM
Quite a bit smaller, Stefan. They seem really delicate compared with other baby Garters I've had. Less enthusiastic about feeding too, they don't gorge themselves like other babies.

I see. And the other babies?

I'm only familiar with the sizes of newborn/newly hatched babies from two species; Adders and grass snakes, so that's why I'm asking.

The radix I got last week are a little bigger and more robust. They're eating like it's going out of fashion! And Esthers' concinnus eat everything they see....they look like little sausages tonight!

Haha :D this is the trick, Lulu: lock your tetra baby up in one hand. For some reason they will become quite calm. Then open your hand slowly and start making pics with your other hand. This works very good for us with all our baby garters.

Good luck !!! I expect results anytime soon now ;)
But the pics you post here are very good already !!

Cali baby - She is soooo much like her mother, didn't think I would ever get her to sit still!

This is her mom - yes I know she isn't a baby, but I wanted to her to compare to the baby. She turned 2 this year.

Thanks, I kept him out of all the babies because of the orange look to him. I wanted to see how he would turn out. Just recently got him to take fuzzies so he ought to grow faster now. He's so hateful that all I have to do is touch him with the fuzzy and he will strike at it. After a few times of that he finally really bites into it and down it goes. But he's just eating it to be spiteful. I also kept a female from the same batch of babies, but only because when I tried to turn her loose she wouldn't go. 3 hours later I go to where I turned them loose and she is still there. I sat down and she climbed up on me immediately. She's a momma's girl. Going to add a pic of her, she ought to be easy to photo, doesn't mind being handled at all. There, oh and she is Goldies sister.

Thanks! My friends couldn't figure out why I kept him, he looked pretty plain with no red as a baby. But I thought I saw something in his coloring and wanted to see what he would look like grown. I've never seen one like him before. I've seen some called orange flames that were pretty close and they happen naturally right? Not just from special breeding? The mother was brought to me by a couple of kids that found it being beaten by a bunch of brats. She was hurt pretty badly. She lived and gave birth about a month later. I have to admit there were a bunch of colors in that batch that weren't the normal for around here. 4 or 5 were lime green, but not one of those made it, refused to eat. And there were two that were silver and black, never saw that before. Don't know if it was her getting beat up or what but about a third of those babies didn't make it.

Could have been from the trama, but who's to say.....babies can be kind of tough. Yeh, you can get really nice "morphs" naturally, but it's just that most people would want to try and be able to duplicate it over and over again....that's where the "special breeding" comes in. I can definitely say you've got a good garter eye.:D

Thanks, in the spring I may breed him to Prettyboy..(we can't always get the sex right when they are very young). She is 4 years old and has never been bred. She has a bit more yellow than is normal too, nothing like Goldie though. She's is pretty hateful herself, though it is usually bluff. Have to stay near enough to make sure she doesn't kill him for daring to come near her.

Do you think so, Don? It's like no ordinoides I've seen....but then my experience is limited, living on this side of the pond!

well, the spots along the side say ordinoides, but after closer look, more like a ribbon by the markings on the head....wonder where the snake is from...he's in pennsylvania...could be ribbon if found out there... guess it would help if i knew where it was found.

I don't want to guess, because I hate being wrong! But it kinda looks brachystoma/ proximus diabolicus. I'll pass on this one!:D

It looks kind of like a penninsula ribbon, but it could be an eastern ribbon.

Here are the nice little parietalis girls that ssssnakelover sent me early this summer! They are growing fast!

THIS IS GAIA...

AND THIS IS TRINITY...

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//508/medium/trinity.jpg

I find it interesting that Trinity is very long and lean, and very brightly colored. Gaia was brown when she arrived, and is just now getting some red. And Gaia is very short and thicker in body than Trinity...

Okay...I managed to get a couple of baby pics with my new camera. The first one is of Bella and one of the eastern babies, in shed mode, sleeping together:

Gotcha. It's not a pictiventris as the poster labeled it. Looks like a red phase mangrove salt marsh snake.

Not to derail this thread too much, but how can you tell it's a pictiventris? Just now getting into water snakes and have a lot to learn.

All i know is glades herps use to breed them and they were called super hypos. They are for sure fl. Bandeds. The fl. Banded hypos are codom so when you breed them together you get super hypos and they are super red and very awesome looking. I never see them like this for sale though. I see hypos and normals but never the super hypos.

i can remember when those where available, at first he wanted a lot of money for those but the price came down quick cuz ultimitely price reflects demand, i dont think many people bought them so whoever was producing those probably stopped, Shannon had some killer ones too but she doesnt have hers anymore either

Thanks Shawn and Joe! The red coloration on it is just so intense, had me confused. Never seen one like that before :D
