Need help sexing 1st snake

Hello all! This is my 1st snake and I could use some help sexing and approx age guess of my Lil guy here. He was wild caught in northern Wisconsin. About 18" long and pretty darn active.

Been feeding cut up nightcrawlers and pinkies. I am probably feeding too much, (every 3 days) but this little dude cannot get enough food. He's ALWAYS ready for more!


Does he/she look healthy? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

i will guess male as i dont see a distinct taper after the cloaca but not sure if its the slight angle of the snake. but anymore pictures of the cloaca you can get would be helpful. im sure somene else will chime in soon. be sure to read the caresheet here. beautiful garter.

I am going to agree with Ashley on male. Firstly, there seems to be a slight bulge in two places from the cloaca and then about 1/4 inch further down the tail. secondly , the overall shape of the body which appears to be on the slender side. Thirdly, the small configuration of the head itself. Remember that the two definitive ways to determine a snakes sex is to probe them or use the "popping" method. You may need to have someone experienced in one or both techniques to do it for you until you can master it. And yes, he looks healthy. Welcome to the garter nation. Lol. :D

If you look closely down the tail towards the tip you can see the bulge from the hemipenes. About 1/4 inch away from the cloaca. But definitive sex determination comes from probing or popping a individual

Little hard to tell scale in these photos but almost looks like a juvie to me so possibly less than a year? How long is he?
