Hey community, picked up a new pair of eastern blacknecks on Sunday from Kevin Luzzi. Beautiful pair. Also picked up a new single female Calif. red sided to enhance my plans for the future and ensure a different bloodline. Thanks to Jay R aka Invisible snake. Pics to follow later. :)

Thank you Z, I heard they can be a challenge when it comes to feeding and I have found that to be true so far. However I have a few tricks up my sleeve for them. They have taken live guppies so far but I am trying to get them on scented pinky parts.

1260412605T.C. occelatus 0.1 (right). These guys are vicious when they grab their prey! :D 2 months old now. The breeder said they were raised on mosquito larvae but were taking chopped rosies when I received them. Can't wait till they get some size on them.:) Actually the male shed on Tuesday. They both took mollies (live) yesterday.

12606I thought this girl was amazing! Picked her out from the three that I saw. Hoping she can hold her own growing up. She surely has potential as do my other infernalis. I think I can get her started on unscented pink parts next feeding. :)

Yeah, looked it up and its a pretty pricy food item and I thought I was going to have to invest in it. But I started out scenting the food dish with toad (inside and out), then placed live mollies inside. What a feeding response once they get wind of the right food. They did not want nightcrawlers or unscented pinky parts at this point. I think it was a combination of the smell of the toad and the rapid flopping of the mollies. :)

So do the larvae not have chitin?

The larval stage of mosquito is aquatic. They are legless and spend a majority of the time at the waters surface. Commonly known as the wriggler or wriggler stage due to the lashing movements of the abdomen that move them forward, backwards and sideways. Of the 4 stages of development the larval stage is where they are prey for fish and aquatic insects. The larvae have a soft body and a hard head and breathing tube or siphon at the tip of the abdomen. They are classified as insects but I haven't found if they contain or are chitin containing at the larval stage. :)

Sounds like they might have some chitin in their head but the soft body allows them to digest probably all but the head exo, then they pass the silly heads np. That's my guess anyway.

Very possible. Remember that those eastern black necks as hatchlings are very difficult to get started feeding. I think the breeder found success in the mosquito larvae for them as early meals. And it must be something they took to as a whole. I will reach out to him and pose the question though.

Kool, but I am trying to reduce the fish in their diet. I am thawing out some froglegs as we speak mixed with pink parts. We'll see.

I am going to check and price the soldier fly larvae. I know that is what the breeder raised them on and also mosquito fish that I heard was just a grey guppy, lol. The mosquito fish I will only use sparingly.
