I've been a long-time lover of snakes and have now decided I need to get some herps in my life :-) A friend sent me a photo of a California Red-Sided Garter and I think it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen!!! I'd appreciate any insight into these beauties, details on care and feeding including any complications so I can decide if I'd be able to provide the best home. I've been raising and showing Maine Coon Cats for about 16 years, so am quite familiar with the intricacies of care-giving and husbandry - not that I have any plans for breeding garters at this point, but it's a possibility I don't preclude. Thanks everyone - looking forward to some educating!

As for care I would advise reading the care sheet here on the forum. As for the snake you seem to be smitten with I would direct you to Jeff Benfer, also here on the forum. Your set ;)

Welcome to the forum. Here's a link to the care sheet Dan72 talked about.
T. s. infernalis (California red-sided garter snake) are a beautiful snake. I've never kept any of them but other have said they can have an attitude(pissy).

Tks guys - Maine Coon Cats are actually cats ;-) It's a large natural semi-longhair native to the US, originating in New England. They're big, beautiful and incredibly social. moosecoonsmc.com is my website if you want to see some. I want to get all the setups so when I'm ready to bring a snake or two into the house I have a safe and secure environment for them! Obviously keeping them safe from the cats is one of my first priorities, so need to plan this out.

Glad you are aware of the cat issue. Your lids need to be strong enough to keep the cats from falling in if they get on top.

Totally aware of the potential danger of the cats getting access to the snake(s). I know I need a very secure tank! All of my pets are family to me, and my future snake will be no less so :-) I'm doing my research before I jump in!
