View Full Version : feeding questions for Checkered Garters
so I've narrowed it down to getting a checkered garter and I was wondering about how long does an 8oz package of silversides last a juvi? I go to petsmart fairly often for CGD and other lizardy stuff and I noticed, at least my does, they only have 8oz packages of silversides. I'm also wondering about how often to feed a juvi.
TIA!

As to how long it lasts, that's difficult; it's best to feed garters a variety (and honestly pinkies or nightcrawlers are probably a healthier staple than fish) so depending on how much fish you feed it will last a different amount of time.
How often you feed also depends somewhat on what you're feeding. For example, if you're feeding nightcrawlers you'll want to feed more often than if you're feeding pinkies. In general I'd say twice a week is probably good for a juvenile though. I prefer to feed smaller meals more often even for my older ones.

Variety in diet is best. Fish, worms, pinkies all have great things to offer but alone lack in certain areas. In my opinion frozen, thawed fish alone is a less then optimal diet.
I have a bait shop to get worms from, but buying mice is currently not an option. I keep getting told that if my roomie finds frozen pet food in the freezer again, she's throwing me out xD
She found my CGD pops for my cresties for when I go on trips that are longer than 2 days and accidentally ate one. well, a bite of one until she spit it out xD

Why don't you invest in a separate compact freezer for your garters and cresties. This way you won't piss off your roomie. Good luck. Stay in peace and not pieces. :D
