Hi everyone!

I just checked my adult male tank and noticed blood in the tank. It was not there 20 or 30 mins ago when I changed the water. I checked the guys and noticed that Rex appears to have his "male parts" hanging outside of where they should be. That is where the blood is coming from as he moves around the tank. Does anyone have an idea what is going on with him?

Here is a picture:

I'll let someone with experience with it tell you how to treat that... For frogs prolapsed organs are usually treated by either a soak in water with honey in it or putting sugar on it; if it's just a hemipene, it would probably fall off after awhile with just betadine soaks... But like I said, don't try that until someone else who's done it before chimes in.

If you haven't already, you need to put him in a hospital tank with just paper towels (maybe moisten them a bit so the prolapse doesn't stick to them) and a water dish. You don't want bedding or cage decor to stick to that or accidentally tear something.

Thank you for checking my photo. I will wait to see what advice I can get.

Not sure it's hemipenis or just a prolapsed cloaca. In a tub with wet/moist paper towels. That will keep everything from drying out. Many times these things fix themselves but a Vet visit might be called for. If it is a prolapsed cloaca it could be from extra hard pushing during defecation.

Hey Le Ann,
How did this turn out? Sorry I'm late seeing your post (I've not been on the forum since before Christmas) but my advice would have been the same as Steve's, warm damp box and vet if it didn't clear up itself. It looks more like a prolapse cloaca to me than a hemipenes.

Hi Everyone! Within the hour after the post, his issue resolved on it's own. I believe he maybe strained too hard. But it is sure alarming to see the blood in the home while he drags himself around. He appears to be fine now and eating properly. Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

Might be best to paper towel him for a week or two, this way you can monitor poop.
