I just recently joined the forum and have been reading as much as I can. I am new to keeping Garters but not new to snakes or reptiles. I have been keeping two New Guinea Tree Boas (Candoia carinata carinata), one having been in my care for eight years now, the other for two years. I have also kept ball pythons and corn snakes in the past, along with various lizard species throughout the years.
I am hoping to learn more about a pair of snakes I recently purchased. I was unable to get very much info from the past owner as I am now the third owner in approximately two years. The snakes were sold as Checkered Garters at a breeders expo but I am skeptical that they are this species. I am also concerned that even though they were sold as a pair that they are probably siblings, this I will never know for sure.
I am hoping to make contact with other Canadian Garter keepers as I am interested in learning more as well as having captive bread snakes available. Please feel free to contact me as I have not noticed any way to contact other members through their member's page.
I am unable to post photos or links in my first post. The larger female has slight red markings along the side but they are only visible up close. The first three rows of scales are a creamy yellowish colour followed by another three rows of scales that have a checkered pattern in olive green and grey/black, but not as distinct as I have seen in photos of Checkered garters. There is a yellow stripe down the back and the head is solid olive green . I am hoping to get some better photos soon and can post a separate ID topic at that time. I have a feeling that these snakes are actually Eastern Garters or perhaps a different colour form of Red Sided Garters.
