I was wondering what I should use for a little Dekay's snake I found. Currently I have him in some reptile sand from the store. He's just been sitting around and not moving much.
I already know what to feed them but I wanted to make sure that the sand isn't going to hurt him. I was also thinking of mixing soil and sand together.

NO SAND! sorry i didnt see this sooner, sand wont do it any good, not in captivity anyways. try eco earth if you can get a brick of it. dekays like to burrow a bit, aspen is fine and so is repti-bark, but definately no sand.

Soil from outside is perfectly fine, do not sterilize it, use several inches deep, plant some grass seed or better still, scrape up some sod (Lawn with grass and dirt included).
It's called "Bio active substrate" and gaining popularity. With bio active substrate feces decomposes on it's own, so cleaning is not necessary when using it.
I have been using bio active soil in some of my cages and it really works well. No need to worry about ingestion or impaction either, Soil passes right through the digestive tract.
