View Full Version : The Art of...Cutting Up Pinkies?

So, I'm getting a young checkered that is feeding on unscented pinkie parts.
My other snake is a Mexican Black King, and naturally does me the favor of eating his mice whole. So I'm not sure how to go about cutting up pinks!
These have apparently been getting their food cut lengthwise. Any...uh...advice on how best to do this? Is it relatively easy because their bones aren't very developed yet? Best done while frozen? What's easiest to cut them with?
This will be, by far, my least faovrite part of having a young garter, ha.

I would say frozen is best, less of a mess but just less.

I do them thawed. Not any worse than cutting up a nightcrawler...

It is best, in my opinion, to do it while frozen. When I did it I would use a clean razor blade, it is almost like cutting frozen vegetables except its a mouse.

i don't like doing it frozen. Thawed allows for precision. But my scissors suck.

I'm not sure I need...precision...? cutting up baby mice? I honestly don't even want to look that closely, haha. (Can you sorta halve the head too or do I just sort of behead the thing? BABY MOUSE SKULLS, how do they work?)
I'm sure my King will garbage disposal anything I mess up, at least. He's almost ready weight-wise to move up to fuzzies, but I'm not sure he's actually BIG enough yet, so some extra on top of the two pinks he usually gets are unlikely to cause harm.

I hope none of my potential garters will require chopped up pinkie mice.

They will if they're small enough! Although you can manage on cut up worms/fish, I just wanted to keep mine on the diet she was used to eating.
I still think it's kind of gross, but it's easy enough. Just...watch for organs falling out. Bleh.

that's where that precision comes in.
