I know there's other threads on here about cut snake tails and the answers were helpful, but I have a couple more questions on the subject: my garter snake's tail is only about 1/2 cut threw, not just hanging by a thread and I don't really feel comfortable cutting it off the rest of the way since I'm afraid of doing something wrong... When I first caught him a week ago there was no blood, the tail past the cut was just dead looking and doesn't move with the rest of the body. Just today there was a tiny bit of blood and it looks like the scales are separating or something, like either he got it snagged on something... Or do you think it's naturally falling off?

The first picture is him when I first got him, the second is what the tail looks like today.

I don't think it's infected... What are signs of infections in snakes? Do they look similar to human cut infections? I would take him to the vet if I knew it would help, but in the past with other animals I would be sent away with just a "call us if it gets worse" and get charged $50-$100 for it.
