Where do you get you frozen rosies from?? I'd love to find a supplier so I wouldn't have to keep running to the pet store for whole fish (I use trout pieces now as my main fish diet).

At the moment I feed all my Garters on pinkies (or fuzzies) and trout in roughly equal measure. They also get occasional frogs and rarely earthworms (nightcrawlers).

Lulu Bennett
07-20-2007, 02:41 PM
where do you get the frogs from? does the store sell them frozen?

adamanteus
07-20-2007, 03:02 PM
I rear a whole bunch from spawn every year.

Sputnik

Are you allowed to do that? I thought they were a protected species in this country?

adamanteus
07-20-2007, 03:13 PM
Not fully protected yet. I'm going to write up the UK laws on the end of KITKATs US laws thread. In the UK, only Smooth Snakes, Sand Lizards, Great Crested Newts and Natterjack Toads enjoy total protection.

ahh i was told i wasn't aloud to feed live animals to my snaakes because it was classed as inhumane

adamanteus
07-20-2007, 04:32 PM
Not allowed by whom? Although unpleasant to us, the eating of live prey is a natural and daily occurence for many species. Tell an anteater he can't eat live food!

Lulu Bennett
07-20-2007, 05:08 PM
i just remember being told it. i am sure it was from the pet store lol

adamanteus
07-20-2007, 05:12 PM
Certainly there are many opposed to feeding live prey, in fact I don't think it should be done unless it's necessary. It has it's place, like so many feeding "tricks", but should never be done for sport. I freeze my frogs and thaw for feeding. Also I only take spawn which would otherwise be destroyed by the building works I undertake. Waste not, want not!

I feed my garters mainly mice, apart from the ones that will only eat garter grub, but every 2-3 weeks each one does get garter grub to add a bit of variation.
Fish is not widely available in my area but i find that the garter grub is a great substitute for fish.

Lulu Bennett

whats garter grub?

ScimitarX
07-20-2007, 06:30 PM
I think, it is some sort of mashed up fish, it certainly smells fishy. Its also got all the correct amount of vitmain supplements in it. The guy we get it from formulated it specially for raising san francisco garters when he was breeding them. I think its fairly new on the market of reptile foods, and thats why a lot of people arent that familiar with it. Its not just garters that are eating it either, our supplier says that other people have found its quite popular with carnivorous fish and turtles.
I'll make sure to get a picture of it then you guys can see what its like.

Yeh, garter grub used to be around in the states many years back, but I think at the time, not enough people over here were interested in keeping garters and it kind of vanished. I haven't seen it sold anywhere in a VERY long time.

it's made by T-Rex and they do sell stuff in the US, but nobody carries it

adamanteus

Garter Grub has been available in the UK for ever, but I've never tried my snakes on it.
