I have been feeding my Parietalis (sp) twice a week, usually in a separate feeding tote But I got home, I'm tired, and I should have gotten the guy fed yesterday.. So I decide to just give him something quick in his cage (I've done 'treats' like this before)
Two weeks back I bought him some earthworms - I had been feeding him fish and pinkie bits up to now... he's had two earthworm halfs over two feedings.. I thought I'd just give him a whole one for now..

I washed off a whole worm, and set it in one of the small reusable containers I recently got...it looked deep enough that I thought the worm would not easily get out..
So I put the tub in the cage.. and the little guy comes charging out of his hide when he sees the worm moving around in the dish and eagerly rushes up and bonks into the almost clear plastic dish....
And then can't figure out how to get to the worm! The dish is see through and he can see the worm moving around. He's pushing the dish around, wiggling under it... poking it with his nose, following the worm as it crawls around inside... Scooting the dish all over the cage- never quite figuring out that to get to that tasty wiggling thing he needs to go over the top of the edge.

After about 6 or 7 minutes of watching this guy scootch and scoot that dish in frustration.. I reached in (he tears off to the other end of the cage) and pick up the dish and dump out the worm... a few minutes later my mighty hunter discovers the worm near the water dish and pounces!! With great thrashing he excitedly drags his prey backwards around the edge of the cage, gamely gulping and chewing it down.. I swear he damn near burped happily as he finished it, and then began to rub his head on shreds of paper to get the worm goo off.
(he was NOT thrilled when I picked him up to wipe his head off with a tissue)

Sorry, I did not think of it... and I did not do this to him intentionally... I honestly thought he'd follow his nose and go in over the top of the container, it isn't very tall. I guess garters are pretty visually oriented - it makes sense given how fast these guys are.

Perhaps I'll try it again with video ready to go... As long as no one will accuse me of animal cruelty! At the zoo, making an animal work a little bit for their food is called 'enrichment'.
