Thanks! I'm debating on whether I just want to work with easterns, similis, and infernalis, but radix, parietalis, and pickeringii are so colorful that I'm having a hard time deciding! I just love them all, but I have way more snakes than I need right now! lol! I also have a pair of natrix (European grass snakes), and 1.2 Mexican blackbellied garters too! I have too many easterns to list!

From Jeff Benfer's website: "The axanthic gene has not been completely well characterized or documented, but it has long been suspected that the axanthic gene and the anerythristic gene are co-allelic to each other. That is the two mutations are different alleles or slightly different mutations yet exist at the same loci or location on a gene. Thus, an axanthic phenotype is actually genotypically one copy axanthic gene and one copy anerythristic gene. Two copies of the anerythristic gene which is recessive, yields the anerthristic phenotype, a very dark almost solid black snake. However, two copies of the axanthic gene does not yield a phenotypic axanthic snake. Only when a snake inherits one copy of the axanthic gene and one copy of the anerythristic gene does the axanthic phenotype manifest itself as a black and blue snake."

In other words, the visual blue axanthics are actually double hets for axanthic and anery.

my friend Doug Wenzell found both the "axanthic" and "anerythristic" in the wild here in Illinois. They were both test bred(in the early 2000's) and he figured out how the genes work together and that information was passed on to Scott Felzer. He also told me how the genes worked and I also passed that information on to Scott and Jeff...they both didn't believe me. Scott claimed the "axanthic" was codominate and claimed he had bred them to everything and proved that....WRONG!! The correct information was put out there a long time ago and here we are in 2013 and this is a new discovery?? no, I think some people are freaking idiots

...also a completely normal plains garter is naturally anerythristic, the "anerythristic" is actually melanistic and the "axanthic" is probably a form of a melanistic too. Theyre VERY SIMILAR

the "anerythristic" is actually melanistic

I've always thought that too. It looks just like some melanistic northwesterns I've found. Now, Steve's B&W radixes... that's axanthic IMO. Takes away yellows but leaves melanin essentially unaffected.

Kevin luzzi ( aka ameivaboy) is a great person to deal with if your interested in the little guy! I am not very good with genetics so i will stay out of the argument about that, but i will give you my opinion since this is an open forum. They have been bred for several years now and have been called anery and blue axanthic for so long that everyone in the hobby knows what we are talking about when we call them anery and blue axanthic. I've even seen them for sale by bhb and exotic pets as anery and blue axanthic. I don't think it should be changed now that these labels have been established and just confuse alot of people. In my opinion genetics is a very tricky subject. I know in painting colors like black and brown are made up of several primary colors and have to be mixed just right to get the color you want. Take brown for an example what happens if you take away red from brown? Brown is typically made up of red/yellow/blue or green/red/blue so if you took away the red you would get some shade of blue or green. I know snake genetics are not the same, but colors are colors. If i had to guess i would say there is a ton of animal morphs being labeled wrong in the whole hobby in general, but at the end of the day it's just a label. Genetic testing would be way too dificult and expensive! I feel if the animal is in your own private collection you can call it a blueberry if you want too, but we should keep them labeled like they are since it's already established. Again this is not meant as an argument towards anyone as I think highly of everyone on this forum and this is just my own personal opinion! Thanks!

Try Kevin Luzzi. He is aka AMEVIABOY as Shawn said earlier. His website is Wonderful World of Pet Suppliers. I am sure he deals with clutches and litters of animals (reptiles). Good luck!
