View Full Version : Baby bite!

So...I have to come on here and admit that I got my butt kicked by a baby eastern the other night. With the size of my two big girls...who would have thought that a baby bite would take me down? Perseus...one of my baby easterns...decided she was a little too excited about the pinky pieces she was having for dinner. She locked on to my finger and decided she was going to try to digest it. She would not let go no matter what I did! She started grinding her teeth back and forth and digging them in as deep as she could. I had blood running down my fingers and I tried prying her off...tried putting my hand in the water dish...I finally got her to let go...and I guess she got enough venom in me to cause a reaction. I'm pretty hypersensitive to everything. My finger started swelling up with fluid and turning purple. I'm sitting there thinking...great...I'm going to have an anaphylactic reaction to a baby garter and have to go to the hospital where I work and try to explain this to everyone! Not to mention, they would have no idea what to do....lol. I tried to call Mike...but he was at work. I washed it out with peroxide, put some antibiotic ointment on it, and took a benedryl. The reaction finally calmed down a couple of hours later. All from a baby bite!

Sounds nasty. Just goes to show it isn't just the big girls you need to worry about, it's what they do with their teeth that counts.
Swelling and discolouration is the same as I got a couple of months back, but mine was a 2-3 year old checkered girl.
Has the swelling all gone now?

I would love to see a photo of this innocent little garter being so falsely maligned.

A good rub down with 91% isopropyl alcohol works for me after one of the girls starts chewing on me. They always seem to think fingers are pinkies during feeding time.

Yep...finger is all better...or at least it was until Cee Cee decided to bite me yesterday in the same exact spot on my finger. She did this after pooping in her water dish twice...so I was sticking my hand in the tank to change the water and she struck at me and bit me. Nice, Cee Cee. Oh and Steve...unfortunately I did not get a pic of the bite...but Perseus said to tell you she takes full responsibility as the perp in the crime.

Will you settle for this one? This little spitfire decided it was a good idea to bite anything in that moves in the immediate area so he grabbed one of his litter mates right in the middle. After some tapping on his head he let go then proceeded to latch onto me with tenacious ferocity. I'm lucky i even survived. :p

So, let me get this straight. This poor little snake was trying to stop one of his cage mates from doing something wrong and you smacked him in the head, repeatedly. Then you have the audacity to complain when the little cherub defends himself. Oh, Marnie.

I'm considering keeping a hook handy when feeding my mental checkereds. Seriously. They have a tendency to launch themselves from the back of the viv, and when they miss the food either straight out of the door or on up the tongs towards my fingers. And then there's the way they harass each other. I'm thinking a short hook may not be a bad thing to have handy.

some of mine get so crazy when they smell food, that if a nearby snake moves, they "bite it first, then ask questions later"
I was trying to break up such an engagement when the offending snake simply latched onto me instead. Such violence!

What did you do to that poor snake, Marnie? Haha. Maybe it was a love bite?
Scar has lunged for me a few times when I've tried to feed him. Thank goodness he's never gotten me! I can't imagine what my job would be like with a snake bite on my finger, especially if I had a reaction.
Cuddles doesn't bite. He just musks. And glares.
