I keep my youngest snakes on a mix cocospeat with sand but when they eat and swim they always make a big mess.
What is the best substrate for young Thamnophis?
The adults that are inside i keep on Yesterdays News.

I would say no to the sand. Yesterdays News will work for young scrubs also. I use compressed aspen pellets and some paper towels.

Paper towels are def a nice no-nonsense substrate. I like that they help me notice/adjust humidity levels as well.

I use paper towels for all my garters from babies to adults. The only time I use anything else is during hibernation. Then I use care fresh.

Why is carefresh better during brumation?

I use a soft dish towel in my brumation tubs.

So why do you guys use a different substrate for brumation....cuz its softer for comfort or what?

I use a dish towel for comfort and so it will absorb any water stilled by soaking snakes.

Just tossing this out there.... Soil works awesome too. No ingestion fears at all.
