View Full Version : My turn...

Maybe I felt left out, more likely I was being an idiot for not making sure they were more secure... but last night the cats managed to get into my son's room and knocked the starter tank with the three garter babies down! Needless to say, there is absolutely no sign of them whatsoever. I'm not holding my breath on ever finding them again, they were simply too tiny and not tame enough. That's if they didn't end up in the cats' stomach anyway. :(:(:(

I'd be really sad if my garters got loose! (For good)
Don't worry!
I'm sure you'll find them.
A few days ago, I lost 2 snakes in our new house. We found them! (They were big snakes) so I guess that doesn't give any help.
Sorry!

sorry to hear that :( i'm not going to lie. your chances of finding them will be slim because of your cats but don't give up hope. try leaving a bit of food out for them...

so sorry, Rosina
I also think your changes are rather slim
but you never know
some forum members have found snakes again after days, weeks, even months

i found a baby corn snake once that had been out for weeks. is there a closet close by? they may have went in there. especially if there are clothes on the floor to hide in. good luck:)

My baby king snake got loose last year. He was about the size of a pencil. I thought I would never find him becouse of his sizeFound him the next day, in my shoe pile and next to the floor vent. I can't believe he didn't end up in the furnace, so don't give up hope. Good luck in your search.
If it makes you feel better, give the cats a cold water shower. That'll fix em. ;)

Cats rarely eat garters. They may play with them, and I won't say that damage isn't likely... but the fact that you have not found any bodies yet may be an encouraging sign.

Watch those cats... if they spend a time sitting and staring at an area, go search that area. I have found escapees that way before.

I have 9 cats running my house. Herps are kept in the same room as the computers... where all cats are forbidden and the door kept closed.

I FOUND ONE!!!

I nearly stepped onto the poor little mite as I walked downstairs to my front door. There is was, tiny little wormy, very dry and weak as anything, but it gave a little wriggle in my hand. I carried it upstairs and gently laid it into a shallow dish of water, watched it for a while then placed the dish into a small feeding tank and half onto a heat mat. It has managed to lift its head and half an hour later even wriggled out of the dish. I'm not sure it will make it, it is terribly weak and it has obviously been carried in a cats' mouth, there are a couple of small injuries on its chest.:(
Please keep your fingers crossed, pray, whatever you feel comfortable with, but please just hope with me that it will survive. I will have to name it "Phoenix" if it recovers.

P.S. KitKat, our three cats aren't supposed to be in that room either. The door had been closed but they managed to get it open. In future I think I'll forget about starter tanks, they are just too light and easily knocked down.

Sadly little Phoenix died this evening. :( She was just too weak and even though soaking her body in the water temporarily seemed to revive her a tiny bit, in the end it just wasn't enough.

am so sorry to hear that. just dont let something like this put you off keeping snakes. these things do happen and can't be helped sometimes. you obviously care so much for them and that is a beautiful thing to see.

Cat wounds are often deeper than they appear. You did everything you could... just take some time to recover from the loss, and then start over with a more secure cage!

God, this is like a yo-yo... Guess what? MY SON JUST FOUND ANOTHER BABY!!! And it's perfectly fine. It's also the one I particularly like because it has quite a bit of red along the sides. :)

Shame poor little Phoenix couldn't have made it aswell and the third baby is still missing, it still hurts, but I do feel a bit happier now.

This little one was nowhere near Phoenix, who I found downstairs near the front door. It was upstairs, just about to slither out of my older son's room, when he spotted it. It's doing really well this morning, I will see if it'll take some food later on. Will keep you posted. :)

A little update, though sadly not good news I'm afraid.
My son came in from the garden a couple of days ago with baby No.3 in his hand. He'd found it in the middle of the garden path. A little flat and fairly big injuries, but it didn't look as if it had been dead for very long, maybe a day or two, it wasn't very dry. :( Poor little thing, but at least we have some kind of closure.
