Hi, my name is Susan, I have 4 kids and a zoo(snakes, lizards, furry critters, fish etc)! My first ever snake was a T. Radix. That was 15 years ago (before we had the internet and when we believed petshop staff knew the proper care of pets...) So now we decided to try again and do things right :) I am assuming Chester is 1 year old, hopefully some breeders/keepers will know better, he is the size of my 2013 cornsnakes, he is a male and so far he ate 2 danio fish(petsmart should have guppies in this week, I have a tank set up to breed them for him). I need to get out and dig up some nice night crawlers for him! He's in a 10 gallon tank quarantined well away from my other snakes and lizards. I have him on shredded paper for now, 3 hides, large water dish.

Thanks! I noticed the Radix range is not this far north! Google picture search is not the best way to try and ID stuff :)

Welcome aboard.
I concur, wandering garter. Definitely not a radix.

Nice to have you with us Susan. Here's a link to the forum care sheet which is always a good read. Post any question not answered to the forum.
Is this new snake a T. radix - Plains Garter Snake also?
What State are you in?

I'm in Alberta Canada :) It is legal to own the 3 native garter species it's just illegal to sell them(yet it is illegal to own western hognose because it's numbers are so low here). I guess the one I had before was also a wandering one. I always thought we just had the radix up here.
