Oh good grief. First of all, I was studying the pic, and second of all, the snake looks emaciated. You know, ever since Gunny landed that well placed kick, my spelling skills have been shot. I also keep reversing letters when I type. I have to double check everything now. I'm thinking maybe I should go to the filthin farthin Dr after all, if it's not too late now to unscramble whatever he scrambled... lol!

Not cold by our standards. :)

+15 'C / 59 'F This is as warm as it gets in Finland, so we'll start here. People in Spain wear winter-coats and gloves. The Finns are out in the sun, getting a tan.

+10 'C / 50 'F The French are trying in vain to start their central heating. The Finns plant flowers in their gardens.

+5 'C / 41 'F Italian cars won't start, The Finns are cruising in cabriolets.

0 'C / 32 'F Distilled water freezes. The water in Vantaa river (in Finland) gets a little thicker.

-5 'C / 23 'F People in California almost freeze to death. The Finns have their final barbecue before winter.

-10 'C / 14 'F The Brits start the heat in their houses. The Finns start using long sleeves.

-20 'C / -4 'F The Aussies flee from Mallorca. The Finns end their Midsummer celebrations. Autumn is here.

-30 'C / -22 'F People in Greece die from the cold and disappear from the face of the earth. The Finns start drying their laundry indoors.

-40 'C / -40 'F Paris starts cracking in the cold. The Finns stand in line at the hotdog stands.

-50 'C / -58 'F Polar bears start evacuating the North Pole. The Finnish army postpones their winter survival training awaiting real winter weather.

-60 'C / -76 'F Korvatunturi (the home for Santa Claus) freezes. The Finns rent a movie and stay indoors.

-70 'C / -94 'F The false Santa moves south. The Finns get frustrated since they can't store their Kossu (Koskenkorva vodka) outdoors. The Finnish army goes out on winter survival training.

-183 'C / -297.4 'F Microbes in food don't survive. The Finnish cows complain that the farmers' hands are cold.

-273 'C / -459.4 'F ALL atom-based movent halts. The Finns start saying "Perkele, it's cold outside today."

it's never boring around here, is it?
look at what happened to my friend, Sean, on the way to the White Plains Expo
CRASH LEADS TO ANIMAL RESSSCUE (http://www.nypost.com/seven/01062008/news/regionalnews/crash_leads_to_animal_ressscue_785123.htm)
the axle of the car cracked (old station wagon) and he kept spinning until he managed to crash the car into the wall
he feels fine
one turle got a minor cut
one plated lizard got sprayed by a fire fighter and ran across the expressway, but Sean got him and he's fine
I saw the car - it looks like something out of Mad Max

anji1971

Stefan-A
01-11-2008, 03:17 PM
Yeah, but it was made back in the good old days. :D It's legendary. So are the first two Alien movies. The third was okay, but as far as I'm concerned, the third movie was the last one they made. ;) :D

For some reason, people get upset when I say that the second Predator movie was actually better than the first. :D

I'm a real horror buff myself.

There's only one horror movie series that I refuse to watch. "The Dentist".. :D Well, "refuse" is a bit too strong a word in this context, "resist" is probably closer to the truth.

adamanteus
01-11-2008, 03:43 PM
No. Real horror is not for me. It worries me that the human mind can invent such nastiness. I know, I'm naive and I'm an idealist, but I'd rather pretend people are nice to each other.

Sputnik

I'm totally with you there, James. I prefer to watch films for relaxation and entertainment. A little stomach tingle is alright but I don't like feeling scared. I have more than enough of that in real life, thank you.
Sleepy Hollow or The Lost Boys is as far as I am comfortable with, but they are certainly the absolute limit!
I had my first big argument with my ex husband over a horror film. He'd taken me to see Nightmare on Elm Street and I was in tears afterwards. I made him promise never to make me watch anything like that again. A few weeks later we went to the cinema again with some friends and everyone assured me that Pet Cemetry was NOT a horror film. Yeah, right! Being a cat lover I was in floods right from the start and left the auditorium, but my ex talked me back in telling me the worst was over. Then the little boy got hit by a truck! I was so angry when he told me in the car on the way home to get over it, that when we got home I packed my things and was ready to move out. "If he doesn't understand that, then maybe he's not right..." Funny how things can turn out to be so true, lol.

Sorry, that was a bit much "sharing". :o

Stefan-A

Rosina, Not being funny but he sounds like a total arse! if my fella tried to do that to me then i would certainly dump him, not for the fact he took me to a scary movie but the fact he didn't respect the me.

Sid

I do enjoy a scary movie, if there is a story to it. My wife wants no part of them, so if there's one I'm interested in watching, I retread to my room and watch it... no pushint it on anyone else.

Sputnik

good riddance
I have too vivid an imagination for that stuff
I had nightmares for weeks after reading pet cemetary
in terms of movies - I couldn't handle blade runner
Jeff has a good sense of what I can handle and screens stuff for me (I'm keeping him)
generally, if it's atrocities committed by regular sick humans, I can handle it
if they're zombies, space aliens, evil mutants, etc - I can't
it's too stressful, not knowing their limitations
all that blood in Sweeney Todd - that wasn't scary
in fact that was so overdone, it kind of made me giggle

I think i am quite wierd with my likes and dislikes.
i hate horrors, not because they are scary but because i find the utterly boring. i'm not the type of person to enjoy shouting at the tv "he's behind you". i always know what is coming.
I do enjoy programes that have true crime and discetions and blood and gore in though. i now know the biology of a pinky mouse too lol :D

I need something that frivolous or better

things are a bit grim (grit your teeth and get on with it) right now
both Mikhaila and I have an upper respiratory flu thingy
except she gets to stay at home and I'm at work

yesterday I found mites in one of my tanks and now I'm wondering who else has got them
I've been very careful since the last episode and hadn't seen any evidence for at least a couple of months
this time it's Casey Jones, the western hognose, and he didn't even get them last time
hopefully I caught it in time and there won't be any spreading to other enclosures

Oh good grief... so I decided to change out Desdemona's tank (she's the kingsnake) today to the Care Fresh bedding. So I started pulling everything out of her tank... and after all was out, I hadn't seen her. So I start digging in the aspen... nothing!!! So of course I panic... she is NOWHERE, GONE, and I keep looking and looking and I can't find her...

I'm thinking the whole time about when the baby milksnake did this to me-- she had crawled up under and into that one fake rock decoration. But Des doesn't have anthing like that in her tank!! The only two things in her tank that are possible to crawl into and not be seen are her damp hide box (which I've emptied) and the goat skull:

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/Desdemona_good_hide_skull.jpg

So I look all over the skull, but I mean, it's a SKULL, you can see all around and thru it... or can you? And then I peer, for like the 10th time, into the brain cavity...

And there she is, the rotten little so-and-so. I'd missed her before. And I couldn't get a good pic of her in there, but if you look on the right side you can see some black and white.

Oh, the brat!! She scared me to death!! I swear I could hear her snickering... :-)

do I ever know the feeling
at least you had some very legitimate moments of panic
you'll never believe the dumb panic I went into a couple of weeks ago
Jeff's brother had given us one of those fake rock hides for christmas and I had filled it with damp moss and put it into the tank with the new kingsnake
except when I went to look for the snake the next time, I didn't remember, and I totally freaked when I couldn't find the snake by sifting through the care fresh
I also couldn't find the snakes damp hide (likely a zip-lock food container with a hole cut in the lid)
I was devastated
I was totally convinced that last time I changed the water in the tank I had taken the snake out in the damp hide and then forgotten to put it back in the tank
and then of course, at some point, I would have just composted the contents
man - did I have a big hole of loss
so I went to just toss stuff back in the tank, and I noticed this rock I couldn't remember . . .

Well Lori, thats the neat thing about snakes. Just think about how many might really be out there in the wild when you are hiking, that you never see but walk right by. I'm sure I've just missed many of the animals on my wish list to find.

Stefan-A
01-20-2008, 04:29 PM
:D I think almost everybody has managed to lose a snake in the terrarium at some point. ;) The first thing my parietalis female did, was to squeeze her way in between the floors. I had raised the floor of the terrarium I was keeping my snakes in, and between the real floor and the upper one, was a 21mm high "crawl space". The male hadn't found it during the 6 or so months he had been living there, but it took the female about a minute to squeeze through in a corner where I hadn't cut the upper floor that precisely. I wouldn't have found her, if her nose hadn't been sticking out.

I ended up bored and having too much spare time, again and here's the result:

Loren, that's what Jamie and I were talking about... snakes are masters of finding the tiniest, coziest hiding spots. I was thinking of all the times we've walked way back in the woods and come across deer or fox carcasses... who knows who had taken up residence in their little craniums?!!!

Rhea... I have to apologize sincerely. Sigh... this always happens... my blondness is creeping across this board now. LOLOL Just teasing you. :D

I'm thinking I should do that before the snakes' outdoor habitat, because it'll be less complicated
right now I really want a Sauna

Nope, never built one. :) Can't be complicated though, depending of course on which sauna style you're after.

boy, did I just have a fright
I saw Layla, my black king lying upside-down right on the heat mat area and I thought she'd croaked
when I took her out, she looked horrible - pale and dull
then I took her to a better light and I saw that she's in shed - whew!
and she is otherwise fine as far as I can see
maybe she just wanted to warm her back?

adamanteus
01-22-2008, 12:17 PM
That doesn't sound right to me, Rhea. I've never known a snake to lie on it's back unless it's unwell.

Stefan-A
01-22-2008, 12:20 PM
I've heard of a few cases, where the snake has simply become disoriented. One was under a towel and another between sheets of newspaper bedding.

But it still doesn't sound right.

drache
01-22-2008, 01:20 PM
I'm keeping an eye on her for sure
when I picked her up she felt fine (muscle tone and responsiveness)
also - I don't think she was upside down for very long
that tank is in plain view and I'd looked at something next to it earlier and when I saw her upside down, I saw right when I came into that room, which I'd been going in and out of all morning
earlier she'd just been buried in the bedding (care fresh)
do they get more easily disoriented when they're blind with shed?
I'm gonna check on her in the afternoon - make sure her moss is damp too

all the fun stuff you get to see on a cat food purchasing errand . . .
the Daily News was at the rescue, snapping a gazillion pics of a tiny frog on a lettuce leaf
a local family had found it in their organic lettuce today
it'd been in their fridge a while before they noticed it, but they're apparently good at misting their veggies, so the little guy is fine and now up for adoption
I must confess that I was sizing him up for food, before I realized he was going to be celebrity
I'm sure he's headed for a life of privilege

I once had a hand in building a sauna.... well, I did the construction of the room and all the joinery (carpentry) work, as part of a house renovation in Scotland. It was actually pretty complicated from what I remember.
They can be dangerous if they're done wrong!

Yes, very, if they aren't properly ventilated.

But it also depends on the stove and sauna type. They don't have to be complicated, most Finnish saunas are very simple constructions.

The one I worked on was a gas-fired-water-heating-system-thingy... I didn't get involved in the actual 'sauna' bit.... they had a specialist firm do that... as I say, I just built it.

Good morning, folks. It's 3:52AM and I just woke up.

You wouldn't believe how hard it can be to find live mice. The only ones I've found so far, are females of some dwarf form of the common mouse, that can't be bred to normal sized males. Wouldn't be a problem if I could find a male with the same gene, which I can't.

Not a single normal sized mouse within at least 50 kilometers.

edit: Aren't there hairless mice too, by the way? ;)

anji1971
01-24-2008, 08:37 PM
I don't know, but if I ever wake up at 3:52 in the morning with mice on my mind, I'll be just a little worried............:D:D:D
You're a student -- shouldn't you be worried about papers and reports and stuff??

Stefan-A
01-24-2008, 08:54 PM
I should, but I'm not. :D I have school for 8 hours per week right now, because of how they organized our courses, and the only thing that needs to be worried about, is a report on an environmental impact assessment that's is to be handed in next thursday. It's not really a major concern.

The mouse thing has been bugging me for weeks.

anji1971
01-24-2008, 08:58 PM
Yes, it's funny how our brains focus on one thing, and it'll bug us forever, even if nobody else can figure out why that is the one thing keeping us awake at night!!
Hope you get your mouse issues all sorted out soon so you can get a decent sleep. 3 and 4 am is not a good wake-up time, Stefan!

"The large garter snake which you saw, my dear lady, is comparatively
harmless. It lives on toads and frogs, and robs the nests of young birds,
and also pilfers the eggs. Its long forked tongue enables it to catch
insects of different kinds, it will even eat fish, and for that purpose
frequents the water as well as the black snake.
The snake will swallow her young ones," said Mrs. Frazer. "I have seen
the garter-snake open her mouth and let the little ones run into it when
danger was nigh. The snake also lays eggs: I have been and handled them
often. They are not covered with a hard, brittle shell, like that of a
hen, but with a sort of whitish skin, like leather: they are about the
size of a blackbird's egg, long in shape; some are rounder and larger.
They are laid in some warm place, where the heat of the sun and earth
hatches them. But though the mother does not brood over them, as a hen
does over her eggs, she seems to take great care of her little ones, and
defends them from their many enemies by hiding them out of sight in the
singular manner I have just told you.In the Forest - Or, pictures of life and scenery in the woods of Canada

Congrats Stefan! Now your little man will have more to do than throw his bedding in his bowl!

I'm still waiting on babies from mine... now it's been 5 1/2 weeks. (Tapping foot impatiently) My husband says it's time to feed those mice to the snakes and get new ones!!

I actually think it may be closer to 21... so what the heck are mine doing?? They are frisky, very well fed, have a clean home and lots of toys and stimuli... and appear full grown. And yup, def. one male and one female. No signs of her having had them and eaten them, never found any traces of blood and I'd think I would.

Well, if they're siblings, it might take a bit longer before they start reproducing. At least that's how it worked with hamsters. ;)

I do have to figure out how to get pics from my email in here
somebody just sent me this entire collection of cats getting baths and I must say - I know the cats don't feel that way - they're the most hilarious pics I've ever seen

Well you should always be able to save pictures on your own computer. Right-click and "Save picture as"?

LOL, Rhea, I saw that too... some of them are sooooo pathetic and ANGRY!!

We just rescued a himalayan kitty who had to be shaved down due to extreme matting, and she looks so rediculous right now--they gave her that "lion cut". lol Here's a link to her story, she is a special needs girl, but man this cat is one heartbreaker... I don't even do that much cat rescue anymore, with all the other animals here, but this one got me!!

Lori
what a sweet cat
I wish we could have another cat - and a dog and a few more . . .
I wish that every time I go to Sean's rescue
we once adopted a cat who showed up on our front step in very similar shape as Sophia
he lived with us for 13 years and passed last spring, not long after I had joined this forum
both of the long-haired cats we had, routinely got the lion cut, because I'm just not into everyday grooming - who's got the time?
