I won a backpack today. :)
Our school held a fair today, presenting all the different departments, student organizations and such. Well, my old brigade had its own corner where they presented the different military branches. There they had set up this shooting training system / "laser" simulator that you could play with. The one with the best results was supposed to win the backpack. A friend (hunter) had already shot a perfect 100 point score before I (target shooter) gave it a try. Shot a perfect score. Three times.
So, long story short:
1. It's fun to win, especially if it requires skill.
2. I have to get myself one of those training systems, it beats any video game. In fact, I'm comparing different systems right now. ;)

Yes, for someone who's not thankful for anything, you've certainly got a wealth of talent, Stefan!;)
Stefan-A
11-22-2007, 05:45 PM
It was too easy. The groups I shot with the simulator were nowhere near what I would demand of myself on a real shooting range.
It's not talent, it's practice. I could teach anyone to shoot better than me in about 10 minutes. :D
edit: yeah, now all I have to do, is pull $3000 out of my *** to get that simulator. Funny, it's almost exactly the sum I expected..

Myself, I've had a less than perfect day. I had to sack a guy this morning, then spent the rest of the day tortured by guilt...I mean, it's only a few weeks until Christmas....
So, in my 'deflated' mood I got to thinking about my big sister who died unexpectedly this Spring, she was only 52. She was my life-guide and mentor in my early years and I miss her.
It made me think of this;
"If there's something you want to do, do it now. There are only so many tomorrows".

Hey everybody,
I'm back after a couple days off. Just finished an epic baking session.............oodles and oodles of cookies, and three pumpkin pies. Sliced off a nice chunk of my thumb doing the pies, and learned a few things:
1. Baking can be very tiring.
2. Thumbs are a very important appendage-- never take them for granted lest you slice up one and can't use it for a day or two!!! Makes life rather difficult...:D
3. This forum is highly addictive....two days off and I almost went completely nuts. I really missed you people!! And man, do the posts ever add up quickly!

any mention of social networking sites alway makes me feel slightly unwell
To be honest, I don't think I'll be building a 'Facebook' page. I don't know what it's for.....
I'm with you on that, James
also
every facebook (or whatever that other site is) page I've ever looked at (and there's only been less than a handful), has been overwhelming
I'm not sure that I want to know this much about a person all at once - I prefer getting to know them
the people who's pages I've seen I don't think I would have ever become friends with if that had been my first exposure
it's kind of like people who wear too much perfume - instead of being subtly enticing, it's like an assault and not terribly inviting
like when Anji talks about her baking woes, I feel at home - it's solid
I totally get the picture

I tend to feel the same way about facebook-- it's like people are sharing just WAY too much information right off the bat. I know some of them have been building their pages for a while, but that's just how it feels to me. The other reason i've never had any inclination to join is that I'm one who feels that the past is the past, and if I haven't kept in touch with or found someone by now, it's most likely that I don't want to for whatever reason. And there are a few people I've crossed paths with in life that I'd rather never "find" me!!:D
Stefan-A
12-16-2007, 08:53 AM
Of maybe a couple hundred people I know, that have Facebook accounts, I've only accepted a few as "friends" there. You still have the option of blocking strangers from seeing your info and you can choose your friends there. I don't think any of my old "enemies" would be interested in sending me any friend requests anyway.
Can't say that it's a useful site in any way, besides for finding old friends, but it's okay if you have time to waste. ;)
anji1971
12-16-2007, 10:10 AM
Well, even if you can choose who you contact and who you list as friends, it doesn't stop people from giving information about you. I had an interesting phone call from someone from about 20 years in my past, and I wasn't too impressed to find out that all they did was ask around on facebook, and someone just happened to let slip where I work. And it was not someone I would have put on my 'friend' list!!

I think i'll have an early night tonight...maybe 1am,lol? I've been going to bed around 4.30 some nights over the past week or so. Just needed some time without the children around.
This evening has been tough. My son's rabbit is dying and we sat with her for ages, saying good-bye. My son has great difficulty dealing with death, it sends him into bouts of depression so I asked him if he wanted to tell "Midnight" what a lovely rabbit she was and we both then sat there, in tears, stroking her soft ears, and thanking her for living so long, being a great mum to 6 babies, coming up to us and wanting to be picked up, etc. It was of course terribly sad, but also lovely in a strange kind of way. Eventually my son told her it was ok to go to sleep now, gave her a last stroke on her beautiful black ears and said good bye, before sobbingly grabbing my hand and walking upstairs to bed. I really hope the way we dealt with it, is going to help him to cope with it better.

Guys, I saw the most ENDEARING thing today. You know how I have this spider aversion, right? Well, the pet shop I went to to get the pinkies (you know, the $50 pinkies) is specifically a reptile/exotic store. And there were some tarantulas. Well, I went to look because I'm trying to get over my spider thing.
In this one big tank there was an UPSIDE DOWN tarantula, and I thought, oh no-- I have to go tell the guy the spider is dead. I bent over to look, and yep, he was flat upside down, legs up in the air. As I pulled back I noticed a post it note on the front of the tank:
"No, he's not dead-- he's shedding!"
Shedding!!! Upside down, looking dead!!! What's up with that???? He never moved or so much as twitched... and for some reason I just found it sweet. Poor spider, is shedding that traumatic???
Stefan-A
12-22-2007, 05:22 PM

I recently got into tarantulas, but I never had an aversion to spiders. I was at a local pet store and they had slings (spiderlings for short) for .99 cents... how could I resist?! I started with the one, got another at an expo, then another from a friend, so I'm up to 3. My fave part about these guys is the type of vivariums you can set up for them; some are stunning. Mine are too small yet, so they're in little containers still. But I have plans, big big plans, lol.
Here's a page (http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=100459&page=9) with awesome shots of molting.
And here's my guys...
This is the .99 Honduran Curly Hair sling. It'll be dark brown with long wooly hairs when it grows up.
http://www.lakehousemedia.com/hidden/herps/tarantula/growth18oct1dec.jpg
This is the one from the expo, a Costa Rican Tiger Rump sling fixing to molt. One day, it'll have red and black stripes on it's rump and the legs will be black.
http://www.lakehousemedia.com/hidden/herps/tiger/1stday12-1-07.jpg
This is the one I got from a friend. I don't think he had kept the humidity up because I brought it home and misted it and the very next day it shed. This is a Chaco Gold Stripe. He's the biggest one I have, and still smaller than a dime.

Udo, that's really interesting. It seems like there would be a benefit to feeding pellets, if only occasionally, for the extra vitamins and minerals. I wouldn't want to feed a totally processed diet, as I think they would miss out on the live enzymes, good bacteria, and "whole food" advantage of live fish and even f/t pinkies. But an occasional couple of pellets would probably be a good thing.
Rhea, I am trying to remeber the name of the pellets... they're the kind tutles eat... I keep wanting to say Reptomin but not sure if that's correct. I'll see if I can find the ad and post it.

Well, I guess Christmas is over now. As some of you know, I was hoping for a Canon EOS 400D digital camera..... What I got was an ill-fitting shirt!

Well, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

you mean you didn't get the camera????!!!!!!!!
on another note
Sean - the guy who runs the rescue - his dog died on christmas eve
and it wasn't just any dog (he's got more than one) - this was his special buddy dog
and it was completely unexpected
the dog got sick, they treated her, she got better, seemed fine, then suddenly dead
I feel so bad for him
part of me wanted to go over there last night and clean all his puppy crates or something, because i know how grief saps ones energy
but i still had all the babies to feed and a bunch of other stuff . . .
I'll go there later and see what I can do
please send some good thoughts his way
and if you want to do something for the rescue, this is them:

Oh, poor Sean. It never fails, when you do rescue, that you seem to loose someone special around the holidays... this past year started with the loss of one of our very special horses, Dawn, on New Year's Day, and I swear that set the tone for the whole year. So tell Sean he's in our thoughts and hope he finds peace soon...

Yeah, I know the feeling.
My studies continue on monday and I'll be moving into a better student apartment on friday. 10 more square meters and twice the rent.

twice the rent.
It can't be easy, Stefan, without a proper income. I don't know how it is in Finland, but I know that in the UK we don't really look after our mature students as well as we should. How much longer until you qualify?

I'm rounding off my holiday with a bottle of Chateauneuf-du-Pape (one of my Christmas presents).... very nice, but at 14.5% vol I'll be trashed tomorrow!:D

The government compensates for 80% of the rent, as long as the rent stays below 252€. The student pays for the rest. Since there's a shortage of affordable apartments, the price rarely stays below that. On top of that, they just tore down the old student apartments to build new ones (finished in 2009), so about a hundred students were basically homeless when school started this fall. I was lucky enough to get an apartment.
Fortunately I have the best parents in the world, they offered to pay some of the rent when I showed them the pictures of my current apartment. :D Frankly, I couldn't have asked them to do it and I don't really need it, but I do welcome the support. :) So, somebody moved out of this better student apartment after Christmas and I'll be moving in.
2 more years left. I have no idea what to write my thesis on, but I'm planning on doing something that involves herps. ;) Maybe some conservation plan, or something.

Doesn't narrow it down much... anything from refuse collection to shark wrangler!:D

Actually, I know what I want to be, but the job doesn't exist anymore (at least not in the Western World).... I want to be a hunter-gatherer!:D

Haven't had that many sharks in Finnish waters. :D I think they caught a spiny dogfish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiny_dogfish) a few years ago, though. :)
The other species that is found in Finnish waters maybe once every two or thee decades, is the porbeagle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porbeagle).

Move to Finland, you don't even need to own land to be able to hunt and gather here. :D

When I left school (at 14 years old) my first job was as a fisherman off the East coast of Scotland....we caught a Porbeagle once, looks just like a miniature Great White!

But are you allowed to live outside society, in that way?
Anyway, I was thinking that at my age hunting and gathering might be easier in a more 'Mediterranean' climate!

I don't think they'll let you do that, they probably want you to pay taxes. ;)
The Mediterranean climate isn't very hospitable, though. Not much to hunt or gather.

Exactly. But it's not fair... I think it's our right to live as nature intended, if we wish to do so.

You could probably live that way in areas that haven't been claimed by any nation. International waters and maybe the polar regions, even though they have been claimed. ;)

there's yet places in the US where one can disappear in the wilderness, given appropriate survival skills - and still get one's greens
on another note
I wish to praise space blankets
my snakes that are brumating are doing this on the sunporch, which on average is about 10ºF higher than the outdoors
last night the outdoors went into the low 20s - scary
hence the space blanket

James, you can come live in the woods behind my house. There's 2000 acres there, with a nice river running thru and lots of swampland. Just don't let me catch you creeping up to my house to steal eggs, goats, or peek in my windows! :D

Oh, this was on CL this evening. It may just be me, but studding that pic of the live snake, I swear that snake looks ematiated (other than the fact that it just ate another snake bigger than itself). Did it do this out of desperation??
