ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
My dad just told his buddies on the pd that i have garters and he is coming over to check what i have!!!!!!!! I have eastern garters wich im not aloud to have what to do?
You could say its a different kind of snake OR you could hide the snake OR you could listen to other people's advice.
are they coming expressly to check whether you're legal, or is it just that they're interested?
I think both
Stefan-A
10-27-2007, 03:16 PM
Label them "common garters". ;) Technically it's correct and you can always hope they aren't able to identify the subspecies. :D Hide them in plain sight.

glad to hear you've still got 'em
I've had an awful stressful morning of rushing around and being hissy to my family
but one wonderful thing happened
I saw the wild parrots!
well, three of them
they were in a tree around the corner from my house, eating berries
they are so green it took me forever to see them, even when they were pointed out to me
and they're big too - not like the ones in San Francisco
now I really want to see whether I can't get some pics of them

So much that you can read about it in Wikipedia.

got to meet my new vet today
one of my new hognoses hasn't eaten yet and I brought in another snake for a check-up
so the new vet is a 10min walk from my house
she seems competent
and the fee was reasonable ($50.-)
Mikhaila liked her a lot
anyway - I just hope th little guy will start eating soon
somehow he looks to me like he's gonna shed again, even though he did just shed a couple of weeks ago

just occurred to me

I have a collection of about 100 sheds
(only for my visits of schools and Kindergardens)
the rest is used as fertelizer in my garden
Furthermore I only keep my calendars.
drache
11-01-2007, 08:12 AM
I give sheds that I retrieve undamaged to interested parties (usually kids)
the rest end up in the compost, where they're then retrieved by the racoon who decorates the garden with banana peels and egg shells
Stefan-A
11-01-2007, 02:11 PM
I've saved three sheds. My first snake's first shed and my vagrans babies' first sheds. I expect them to shed again this weekend, by the way. :) Maybe I'll keep all of their sheds if I can figure out a good way to store them.

I've never kept any records, although now I kind of wish I had, since I can't remember the last time Deejay shed. How long is it normally between sheds? I think it's been about 6 months. that's good one
a read a martial arts novel long ago, where the hero was knocked out by a guy who had cultivated a deadly form of flatulence
the super power I've always wanted, is to be able to understand and speak all languages, including those of other beings - plants, rocks, etc
but being invisible is kind of cool
I'm getting a taste of that occasionally on the subway
hey guys
Jeff and I are getting married today
Mikhaila will be a b*st*rd no longer

At least sunny and cold aren't mutually exclusive. The coldest winter days are usually sunny. :D Cold and warm are both good options, it's everything in between that sucks.

I just keep praying that we get enough snow this year to make it worthwhile! Last winter was so mild here that we never got to go out tobogganing once, think we went skating twice -- whoo- hoo!!
What's the point of having winter unless it actually acts like winter?? I'm in Canada, dammit!! Where's my snow????

Yes, and I think it's that particular weather that's migrated over here!! Gray, cold, damp and drizzly seems to be about it for winter now. Until March, when it's supposed to warm up a bit, and then we usually get a big snowstorm just to tick us off!:) I so want to move up north..........

I've noticed with my garters that they've only used the hides around shedding time. They don't bother using them unless they feel it's necessary.

this is the first time I'm giving them to my garters
all my kings have them, as well as the xenochrophis and the lystrophis
none of my other garters have them

and it even took me a while to think of giving them the damp hides - I just kept wet bagging

That's because I keep referring to her as my 'baby' since she was the offspring of my big garter, the late Dojo. I kind of keep forgetting that she's actually a big girl now, too! She's the same size her mom was when we found her, and when this shed is finished, she may be close to the size her mom left us at.
When I get the new baby dekay's next week, maybe I'll start talking about Deejay like the grown up she is!!!!:):)

What? :D
I've always wondered what other people do with their extra space. I fill mine with knowledge of everything I've ever been interested in. It does have its drawbacks and it's always the same; you're just sitting there, quoting Cato the Elder, or lines from the Parrot Sketch, and nobody knows what the hell you're talking about. :D Incidentally, the examples are real (and from October). And they were relevant to the discussion.
Then again, I don't have any kind of short term memory.

I've had a very sad day here. My sweet, silly cocker spaniel Coconut passed away this morning... she was only 4 years old. :-( :-( She started having massive seizures about a month ago, out of the blue. Rushed her to the vet, they found nothing in the bloodwork, put her on meds (phenobarb). It worked like a charm, altho the dose was high and she was a bit groggy all month, but no seizures. She had her re-check appt set for this Friday to run more lab work and adjust her dose. Well, last night in the middle of the night she had a seizure, and then again early this morning. Called the vet, they said to bring her in at 10 am... so I laid with her on the bed for a while, snuggling, then did a few things around the house, and when it was close to time to leave I went to get her. She was still on the bed, her silly little tongue hanging way out as usual, but when I touched her to wake her up... she was gone. She had passed quietly and apparently gently in her sleep. I am so greatful for that, really I am, and I am also greatful that I was here at home with her... but it's so hard.
I had found her as a tiny pup on the interstate, and she had neurological damage... and was seriously simple in the brains department, but she was a sweetie. Always happy, that little stub was always going. I hope she is somewhere completely free and healthy now, chasing chickens in the clouds.

Mikhaila's teacher is kind of new at the school and a bit more strict than we're used to
and Mikhaila is relentlessly creative which can be exhausting to a teacher who doesn't live in that realm

Most ridiculous British laws:
1. It is illegal to die in the House of Parliament
2. It is an act of treason to place a postage stamp bearing the British monarch upside-down
3. In Liverpool, it is illegal for a woman to be topless except as a clerk in a tropical fish store
4. Mince pies cannot be eaten on Christmas Day
5. In Scotland, if someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your toilet, you must let them enter
6. A pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants, including in a policeman's helmet
7. The head of any dead whale found on the British coast automatically becomes the property of the king, and the tail of the queen
8. It is illegal to avoid telling the tax man anything you do not want him to know, but legal not to tell him information you do not mind him knowing
9. It is illegal to enter the Houses of Parliament in a suit of armour
10. In the city of York it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow

anji1971
11-07-2007, 04:18 PM
Very true, that's why we just have to hope and pray that it doesn't. Although here in Canada, I think we could use better care for the mentally ill -- they tend to fall through the cracks, and not always get the attention they need until they do something like this. We've had this type of thing go on before, and in the US it seems to be happening more frequently all the time. But I guess it's not always that simple a solution.......

I think it's horrible when it happens, but I don't think of it as becoming more common
we know very little about homicidal maniacs and disturbed individuals of the past, because they were never publicized like they are today to serve as inspiration to other deranged individuals
the same persons may have chosen different, equally horrible actions, if they hadn't known about this particular method of getting back at the world
there is no way to guarantee absolute safety for our children
the likelyhood of encountering a shooter in public school is no higher than many other places

just remember that the more common ways to get killed don't make much of a story
Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and nonfatally injure someone every two minutes(NHTSA 2006).
that's more kids in a month than ten years worth of school shootings
it's no less of a tragedy and possibly more preventable
(not to minimize the tragedy of school shootings)

Oooooh guys... I think I just realized why I like snakes... they don't have hooves!!!! LOL
Just got kicked slam in the chin by the previosly (well, still) wild mustang we have here... luckily, I was standing very close behind him, or I wouldn't be laughing about it now!! I was walking past him to turn on the water, and for some reason, today was the day that someone walking behind him freaked him out. I must say, he has quite an upper cut. Being a nice, peaceful girl, I've never been hit in the face... you know, never been in a bar fight... interesting experience.

Yeah... not as glib about the whole thing as I was earlier. My whole upper body hurts, my neck and back are killing me, my headache is here to stay, and I've been nauseous all day. Porbably a wee bit of a concussion. Not taking a pain killer as I'm trying to stay awake. Ugh. Tomorrow will be a better day... I hope :-)
The mustang should not be here, truly, as I'm not qualified to deal with him. But there was nowhere else for him to go... and we still have not found anyone else to take him on. He's a bit of a problem, thru no fault of his own... he was wild caught by the BLM, then one of the hundreds that gets adopted out to the wrong people. He was badly abused for 2 years. So he's not only wild, he's abused wild... the poor guy, none of this is his fault. If there was some way I could send him to a sancutary to live out his days as a wild horse again, I would, but the sanctuaries are all full... I keep trying tho.
Anyway... not the first time, won't be the last I get kicked!! :(

Yeah... not as glib about the whole thing as I was earlier. My whole upper body hurts, my neck and back are killing me, my headache is here to stay, and I've been nauseous all day. Porbably a wee bit of a concussion. Not taking a pain killer as I'm trying to stay awake. Ugh. Tomorrow will be a better day... I hope :-)

Lori, upper body pain, bad headache that won't go away, nausea, and sleepyness, fatigue is a sign of severe concussion........... you should see a Doctor..........its not something to over look......I've seen many in sports, and even know of some one who has died because they put it off like no big deal...........I'm not a Doctor, but think you should see one....:)
p.s. may even have a little whip lash!!!

Justin... I pretty much have to be bleeding from the eyes before I'll go to the doctor... lol. But if I'm not better tomorrow I'll go. I just don't feel like he hit me hard enough for a bad concussion. I'm going more with the whiplash idea... thanks so much for your concern... :-) :-)

Lori
make sure you take good care of your head and neck
those are important body parts
I'm curious - how is that mustang with other horses?
perhaps you've got some matronly mare you could stick him with?
Lori P
11-12-2007, 05:42 AM
Rhea-- he is fine with the other horses-- as long as they are healthy. He is a demon to new rescues coming in (typical wild horse-- he protects his herd with a vengence, chases off the weak ones). My last matronly type mare passed away a while back, and he has bonded very tightly to one of the geldings over the younger mares which I think is interesting. Here's his story if you're interested:
(Gunny)Page Title (http://www.newhoperescueva.com/Gunny.html)
He's come a long way working in the round pen, but it's me who doesn't know how to take him further. And once out of the round pen, he's back to the wild mustang... it doesn't carry over. I really would love to find a sanctuary where he can just be free of humans... which seems to be his preference. I wonder how many more of the BLM mustangs end up like Gunny...

thanks Lori
what a story - poor guy
not many places they let a horse roam any more
why does the BLM catch them anyway?
is it a space thing or are they raising money selling these horses?
Lori P
11-12-2007, 06:32 AM
Rhea, I think it's mostly a population control program. I don't think they make any money off of adoptions, as the fees are so low. But it's a government program so who knows what the whole story is. My thinking is-- if they are rounding them up anyway-- why not geld the stallions and sterilize the mares and turn them back out?? I'd think a birth control program would be better... they'd always miss a few so the herds would still reproduce, just not as quickly...

that does sound like a much better idea
I have some others, but they're all in the utopian realm (requiring humans to change)

hope to read better news about you soon.
Had a look to the story of Gunny: very impressing photos and less text, so it was easy to understand for me.;)
Hope you can find a nice place for him.

Great. My local pet shop has apparently phased out all exotic pets. They haven't been replacing the animals they've sold, I've actually been waiting for months for them to put something in all those empty terrariums. Well, last time I visited, they were again using the terrariums, but they were housing some bloody hamsters in them. I don't know if it's because they're a part of a chain now, but it's been going down hill ever since.
Let's see how long it takes before they stop selling frozen rodents, meal worms and crickets.

I came to the opposite conclusion. Considering how long it took for them to move the reptiles they had, I'd say there's no way to make it profitable in a town this small.

I wasn't suggesting you should exploit the niche. It would perhaps be better suited to a wide-eyed, optimistic dreamer, with no real business accumen or grasp on the finer points of supply and demand in the cut-throat world of commerce.

About 48,000 people live here, but that doesn't include people in the smaller surrounding towns and villages.
The 17th largest municipality in Finland. Coincidentally, I study in the city that's ranked 71.

Yes, we do. A lot less.
You used to be able to find herps in the city where I study, which has a population of just over 14,000. It went out of business a few years ago. So did the two pet stores we used to have in my home town when I started keeping herps in the late 80's.
As far as I can tell, the closest pet store that sells herps (or should I say: over-priced corn snakes) is 50km away. Doesn't keep garters, but will order them, which would otherwise be nice, except for the fact that you need to contact them well in advance and you'll never know what they'll get.

A pet shop is definetly the wrong place to look for garters in Germany because there are so many private breeders who take much better care of them and have more rare species or morphs as well.
