Been cruising from flea market to flea market today, looking for old aquariums or anything else that could be used as a terrarium. Found nothing, except for an old scratched overpriced faunarium. But I also found a couple of cabinets with sliding doors, that could be converted into terrariums in half an hour. For a couple of minutes I considered buying them, but I don't even need them.. I really don't feel like using tubs, even if they are cheap, and I don't want to invest in any new ones.

can anyone help me with my cat dilemma?
Mikhaila went to a big cat show yesterday and guess what?
no she hasn't brought any home, although she spent about a half hour on the phone with Jeff, trying to talk him into it, while I was at Petlands, getting stuff and once again wondering why I can't "save" every garter and ribbon they have
when I got back to our fully loaded zipcar, Jeff was still on the phone and there came the historic moment when I heard Jeff say:
"no cats! snakes - yes, lizards - yes, spiders and bugs - yes, but no cats!"
now I see that this rescue in CT has two Maine Coons - they're siblings - and I'm kind of wavering
we still have all our cat stuff
it's just that I'm still unpacking from the move and hadn't planned to even think about cats or dogs 'til spring
if we get cats - they'll be strictly indoors, because of the large number of strays in the hood
that means hair everywhere

I do need to get this sliding door thing down a bit better
it was Hermione, the red-spot mama
I was gonna feed her, but she wasn't home
thankfully she hadn't got far
AND
she proved to me once and for all
right in front of my eyes
that a snake with a 1.5cm body diameter can fit through a crack 0.15cm wide
I caught her dangling between the shelf and the wall
I thought she was stuck
but by the time I'd gotten the phillips she was hitting the road
and she bit me! hard! bleeding and all (can't say it hurt at all, but I did call her a female dog a few times, because of the battle atmosphere)
now she's in her dining hall with a little tub full of pinkies and minnows
I noticed she was just sucking down the last pinkie, while there were still minnows in the dish
I must say
I cannot help feeling a bit triumphant
I do have to figure out how to better secure those sliding door tanks

Should you ever feel the need to smell funky again, go to a goat farm. That male goat smell will knock your socks off. When I was breeding milk goats and kept a few bucks on the farm, I could clear out a room fast... it's great when you're at the grocery store, people with one item to your 50 start going, "Oh, please, go ahead of me, really, I insist!".... LOLOL :-)

Yes, everything's fine. I work for two mobile horse vets, so they are always out on the road making farm calls, and while it's great that they aren't here in the office hanging over my shoulder, some days they call and call and call and drive me nuts!! I don't know how those two ever survive a day alone... :-)

However, it was interesting to see that as ticked off as the snake looked, the baby looked equally disgruntled everytime the snake struck at her!! It almost appears that this is a frequent pastime for the two of them- some people will let their kids play with anything!!
As for the genetic tolerance- i'm curious about that too, however, I wouldn't want to be the first in the family to experiment !!

It's pretty much guaranteed that the snake was tampered with. Cobras rarely 'dry strike' with a closed mouth, especially under that amount of pressure. Also, they are teaching that child not to fear/respect a dangerous creature which he/she is likely to encounter in day to day life. It's sick what people will do for the sake of the camera.

I don't get it. Why are garter snakes not more popular?? These guys are SO fun, so adventurous, always out exploring and nosing about. I find myself spending waaaaay too much time watching them having their little snakey adventures in their tank. And all the bright colors they naturally carry... are we keeping these fun little snakes secret so we can quietly enjoy them and giggle at all that the rest of the snake keepers are missing???!!!

A picky corn or ball python might only eat gerbils, a picky garter will only eat worms cut into 1" pieces off a silver platter under a blanket with the lights turned off.

I find it very sad when people get any kind of pet and just don't bother to find out how to take care of it. When my kids brought home the first snake, it was "trial and error" for me too, but I still took the time to find out the basics and used a little common sense to make sure the poor thing was getting the best care an amateur like me could give her. And it worked! I just don't understand why people seem to think that if an animal is a "cheaper" pet, it doesn't really matter what happens to it:(:(.

Well, it's not my only day off, technically, but it's the only one I can spare to just sit on my butt and relax. For the rest of the month I have work, PTA meetings,and school events, 2 Hallowe'en costumes to make (yeah, I sew as well as clean and cook!);) And to top it off we are getting new bedroom furniture so I have to empty our bedroom, and my son's(he's getting our old stuff), get the leftover furniture out of the house, and I promised to paint my mom's room at her house before the middle of November. Oh, and I still have to get outside and clean out the flower beds and plant 100 or so tulip bulbs, and I'm STILL trying desperately to find a snake outside somewhere. OHHHHH i feel tired now just typing all this.........but thanx for asking James, who's getting nine days off..........I hate you now.........:D:D

I made some mistakes, because all that moving put me into a state of overwhelm and I just wasn't focused enough
in addition I got new caging with new and unfamiliar challenges
I did end up losing three snakes
only one of them I'd had long enough to have a relationship with
I think I've been very lucky, not to have lost more snakes

there is a herp vet in five minutes walking distance from me who is not as fantastic, but serviceable in an emergency
I'll probably meet him tomorrow
one of my new lystrophis has not eaten yet
this guy I think is really more of an avian vet, but it sounds like Sean can just ask him for what needs to be done
also, Sean still works with the vet, so if one of my snakes has something more complicated going on, I'm sure I can get Sean to show it to the vet

She had just got her lung takin out and she was doing a lot better.

Oh Josh, I am so incredibly sorry for your losses. You have had such a terrible time. I can only imagine how hard this is for you, but also, I can only think of how grateful your gram was that you were there for her. You gave her a huge gift by being there.

josh sweety i am sending you my love, hugs and my strength, first class, in this time of need. i know how bad it feels at first. when i lost my grandad i was sooo gutted and even now thinking of him makes me sad (and i lost him about 8years ago) but it also makes me happy...it makes me happy because i remember all the fun and the good times we had when i was a child. i loved him very much and it makes me feel tons better knowing he is not suffering now and that he is in a better place and that he would be sooo proud of me.

I hope this helps hunni and just remember she would be so proud of you. xxx
