Our local weather experts say there's no end to summer in the near future. No rain at all in the 10 day forecast. Upper 70's and low 80's. It's so friggin dry! Rivers are critically low. Small streams and ponds that haven't gone dry in years are gone. Bone dry. And this is following one of the wettest springs on record. It didn't stop raining until mid July and Sticking snow fell on the beaches in the middle of April!

Well yeah. A lot of the country is in a severe drought. Worst since the "Dust Bowl" era. Food prices are going to skyrocket very soon. WA isn't officially in a drought. Just a very dry summer. Our local corn crops are doing fantastic.

That's an eastern for sure. Looks just like my Cee Cee. The weather here has been too cold too soon. This is not good for having to sit at baseball games at night in the dark after the sun has gone down. Time to break out the longjohns. I think I am finally on the mend from this stomach thing...still not feeling completely up to par, but I'm not lying in bed with stomach pains anymore. My son and his friend are outside playing on a pogo stick. I've been sitting here for five minutes trying to figure out what the weird noise I'm hearing is. I thought one of my cats was having trouble breathing. It's the darn pogo stick going up and down outside my window!
In other news...my son has been complaining about his right arm hurting. He really wants to be a pitcher and his new coach has been letting him pitch entire innings. Yesterday he started looking like he was in pain while he was pitching and came off the field crying in pain. I'm not sure what is going on. He may have hurt his arm playing football at school. But also, his doctor just started him on a new medication...I'm worried that the medicine may be giving him muscle pain. He really needs the medicine, but he really loves pitching. It is a difficult situation.

How old is he? I pitched for awhile (and short stop) before i played football, I'd never let my coach take me out, therefore really wore my arm out.. wears your arm out for sure, but it should be fine by the next game, if it isn't, he shouldn't be pitching until he isn't hurting like that anyway cuz it's obviously not just sore. Unless he's like me and can pitch left handed too which I doubt, find out whats wrong before pitching again or he'll be out all season likely, depending on what's wrong. Been there done that.
And yeah if it's just sore then he just need to keep using it, that'll stop.

If he pitched too much without proper coaching he most likely has soft tissue damage like tendonitis. if he backs off he will be ok.
Marnie I am glad you feel better.
Weird noises can be hard to figure out sometime and it can be funny when you fugure it out like a pogo stick.
Once we woke up in the middle of the night to a strange noise and thought someone was breaking into out basement door. I went downstairs in my underwear with my dog and a Samaria sword I kept near my bed. I open the door, nobody there so I walk around the outside of the house. I get to the front and a guy is waiting for the bus and see's me in my underwear with my dog and a sword and he just took off really fast and frightened. The noise ended up being our cat playing with a hear register in another room and the sound came into our room through the vent.
Things seem confusing at night. I bet that guy still tells his side of the story 30 years later

Rofl...Jimi, that is a great story! I keep a dagger under my bed...lol. Well, my son is 10 and he has been pitching now for three seasons...although this is the first time he has pitched entire innings. This is definitely something new. He has been playing fantasy football at school and at the last baseball game, he complained his arm was sore and tired from playing football. But this time, he was in tears and he said it hurt really bad above the elbow and his hand was tingling. I'm wondering if he did something while playing football or if this new medicine could be doing this. We see his psychiatrist today...who prescribed the mood stabilizer. I will ask him about it. I think I will also take him to our family doc and see about getting an x-ray. He has a game tonight though. If I can talk him out of it...I really want him to not pitch tonight. He loves pitching though and he's pretty much the best pitcher the team has. He will feel that he is letting his team down. It's tough.

I don't think there was anything more to be said - all the good advice was already given and either accepted or ignored. Animals of equal size? One on one?
Panther. It's a lone hunter, whereas a wolf would normally work in a pack. The panther has the advantage of agility and uses claws as weapons as well as teeth.
And....
Odd question to be pondering Marnie. :)

The panther's claws and agility would beat the wolf.Normal cats claws bloody kill just imagine something 10 times bigger:eek:

Stefan-A
10-02-2012, 08:57 AM
It's not a hunting situation, though. Predatory attacks are easy compared to fights. They don't have the luxury of getting to choose their prey and performing surprise attacks.
The agility is not worth a lot, but the claws are a major advantage.
In the natural world, it would end with the "panther" vacating the area. In a confined space, it would end with the wolf, or both of them, dying from accumulated injuries sustained during multiple minor scraps.

Any part it could get hold of. Then it would drag you under water and drown you. If it seems like it can't do it, then the rolling starts. The upside is that if it only has your arm or foot, you might still survive.
Some snake venoms are pretty horrific by comparison. You better hope it's not something that liquifies your arm or leg, or makes you bleed out of every orifice.

Actually when I think about it i'd rather be had by a crocodile than get bitten by any of the Bitis family.First it would hurt before they inject because their fangs are massive. When they contract their venom glads the pump ridiculous amounts of venom into you and the bite are turns to strawberry jam...and then you die a couple of later.

Seems a few stores are starting to slip again but Petco really changed for the better nationwide for that very reason. Too many people sending in animal control and/or complaining to corporate. Mainly because of bad conditions for their reptiles. The conditions of the animals and their cages at all stores around here improved greatly and they don't keep them in the store for more than 60 days so the animals are in much better condition.

I just picked up a Checkered Garter from a lady who had No clue what she was doing... She bought it for her 9 year old daughter but of course she did all the work for it....
Any one remember my little rant about a Big Al's fish store and me arguing with a employee about the care of Checkered Garters they had for sale?
Anyways This lady bought this little guy there in June(I saw them in late May) and was feeding him a pinkie mouse a week and few minnows in between. Said she was feeding crickets for awhile but stopped cause their chirping was annoying. lol She switched to small fuzzies little while ago cause he still seemed hungry after a small pinkie. She's been keeping him on shredded aspen. Made the mistake of putting a big heavy water dish on top of it... Got lucky he didn't get crushed.
Lol As she was telling me all this I kept shaking my head at each thing you guys just did by reading it over lol.
Every time I shook my head, she'd stop, I'd explain. Minnows are bad etc. Can't digest exoskeleton of any bugs etc. lol She kept telling me the pet store(Fish store now with reptiles Big Al's) told her to feed minnows or goldfish, crickets and the only correct thing was pinkie mice.
Oh well, He seems pretty healthy, he has grown since seeing him in the store. He is very calm, which was almost cause for concern but he is active n tongue flicking lots just chilled out. lol She said when she picked him from the other one at the store was because he sat there n looked at her while the other one was flipping out n jumping around trying to escape lol.
(I'll copy this and post it in my snake log later when I take pictures to add)

There was a black bear sighted in our city park here yesterday. Very odd. They don't usually wander all the way into town, they stay up in the mountains. We do usually get a good number of mountain lions through town every year. I wish I hadn't been working, I would have loved to go take some photos of it. Apparently game & fish were unable to capture it.
Also we have had a huge change in temp. On tuseday it was 80, yesterday it snowed :( more snow and cold temps to come this weekend, according to the news. God knows we need the moisture, but I can't stand going from 80 degrees out to snowing litteraly over night.

In the city of Vancouver, WA (around 200,000 people) the fourth largest city in WA, we occasionally get deer, bears, cougars, bobcats out of the blue smack dab in the middle of highly urban areas. They usually show up this time of year. If things get too dry (it's extremely dry now) they come to town looking for food. Don't ask me how they get so far into town without being seen. Last year some kids spotted a black bear sleeping in a tree at a park within walking distance of downtown! A young cougar also found sleeping in a tree near the interstate just blocks from downtown.

Well, I took my exam yesterday and I feel like I did really well on it. Of course, the butthead teacher is taking his time grading it...so I have no idea of my score. I really can't stand the teacher in that class. He has no idea how to teach...doesn't actually teach us anything, and puts trick questions on tests. That does not help students. Teaching should be about helping students to learn...not pulling authority trips.
I am so unbelievably exhausted...it's just been non-stop for weeks now. I couldn't sleep last night...and I have class from 12-3 and then a baseball game at 5:30...will probably be there until 8. Did I tell you guys that I took my son to the doctor and he couldn't find anything wrong with his arm? He said he is probably just overusing it between playing football at school and baseball for the team. He said no more football until baseball season is over, keep an eye on the arm, limit his pitching, and pull him out of games and ice the arm if it starts hurting...then let him know if it continues to bother him.

That doesn't matter. The ad could be seen by the eye, and recorded to your subconscious, even if it was only seen for a fraction of a second. It doesn't matter if you can't consciously recall a single product in the ads either. The ads still influence your buying decisions whether you are aware of it or not.

Yep...I just woke up and turned the heat on. Ordered a dome lamp for one of the tanks and now I have to get some heat mats for the tubs. Gotta figure out something for the guinea pigs and the hermit crabs too because they are in my son's room and it gets really cold in there. The night time baseball games are going to really get cold. My stupid teacher hasn't graded my math exam that I took last Thursday yet. That's nice...keep me waiting when you know that me staying in the nursing program totally depends on my grade on that exam. Butthead. In other news...the research that I am doing for my paper on snake venom in medicine is turning out to be incredibly interesting. Thanks to those of you who gave me links to articles. It turns out scientists believe they may have found a way to inhibit the growth of tumors and stop breast cancer from metastisizing with an enzyme found in the venom of the copperhead. And...they found a component of the venom of the black mamba that proves to be a better painkiller than morphine without the addictive qualities or side effects. They have even found a component in the venom of a pit viper that kills a particular leukemia cell. It's so fascinating. Who knew venomous snakes could be the answer we have been looking for in a cure for cancer? Chalk a big one up to the snakes!!

Got really cold here yesterday too
Been getting cold here at night, particularly in the hour or two just before and after sunrise. Still no freeze though. Theres not even any dew overnight. Its too dry. Humidity has been like a desert. 10-15 percent. Still no rain, still sunny and warm during the day. Trees aren't even turning fall colors. Instead they are all wilting and dropping dry crunchy leaves that are still green. Combine that with windy conditions, and we've had a lot of wildfires including several two-alarm brush fires in Clark County, WA
We got through Sept. without a drop of rain and almost no moisture in the air. Here it is Oct. and still no rain. Not even morning dew or any clouds or fog. This is unheard of.

Thanks Jimi. Well, I have the liters to ml down...I definitely have the whole ratio proportion calculations down. Of course, I was all proud of myself for doing so well on that second exam...and then last night in class, my teacher said "Everyone did really well on the second exam. All the grades were above 90...but if you did well, don't think that you are in the clear...because the exam was too easy and the next two exams...especially the last one...will be really tough. If you got a grade in the high 90's on exam two, that is fine...but if you got a 90...that is not acceptable". What a complete jerk. In the beginning of the course he said that his purpose was not to fail us but to see us pass the class so that we could move on to the second semester of clinicals. But he is acting like he is trying to fail us. I hate teachers like that. I did meet a girl in my class that said that she absolutely has to do well on the last two tests as well and that she would study with me. So that is a plus.

Sorry I haven't been replying to many threads...my son has been really sick since Saturday. Got to have the wonderful experience of sitting in the ER waiting room for hours Saturday night. This is the hospital where I am supposed to do my clinicals and I was so angry with the care that my son received...or didn't receive that I had to literally bite my lip to keep from screaming at everyone. They had us sitting in the waiting room for two hours with my son's fever getting higher and higher and him starting to shake and twitch. Finally, after me asking several times for him to please be seen...they found a room for him, where we sat for another half an hour waiting for the nurse to look at him. When the doctor finally got around to looking at him an hour or so later...they barely ran any tests and just said.."It must be a virus". I am getting ready to take him to the doctor now. I will not work at that hospital once I am an RN. I will work at the children's hospital...where I should have taken my son...or at some other hospital.

Nope, just that he's lost the war.
Killing the Jews was a minor episode considering everything else he did (after all, he did cause the deaths of 20-25 million Russians) and he wasn't trying to take over the world. A large part of western Eurasia, yes. The world, no.

I think it's safe to say that Hitler was a wanker.
Safe, in that it's fairly easy to agree with. Unsafe, in that there are certain nitpickers who think it's an oversimplification and that dismissing him as a "wanker" makes it more difficult to discuss the state of mind and motives of people like him and is therefore counterproductive, considering that we need to be able to understand his kind in order to prevent or stop similar tragedies from happening again. ;)

Everybody has a pet theory about why he did what he did.
Personally, I think he was pretty open and honest about his motives, but was severely misguided (he believed in BS). I don't think he was mentally ill, I'm convinced he was just very devout as far as his ideals were concerned. Most of his views reflect the prevailing views of his era. Nationalism, imperialism, eugenics, racism, antisemitism were all alive and well all across the western world, from the Soviet Union to the US (also Finland), and in that regard it's not difficult to see why he got so much support in the early days and met so little resistance.
Nobody really cared about what happened in Germany until he invaded Poland in 1939 and even then people only cared because both France and Britain had signed defence treaties with Poland and were forced to react. It was more about prestige than anything else at that point. Nobody cared about the Jewish people being disenfranchised in the preceding decade and the war was in full swing when the existence of the concentration-, work- and death camps became known.
I hope nobody interprets anything I write here as a defence of him or his actions.

If we don't study the past and try to understand what happened, we risk repeating the same mistakes again. You don't have to agree with actions to understand them.
There are people in the world who are not mentally ill, but who actions are assumed by others to be the result of mental illness because they are so far outside societal norms - these people aren't ill, they know what they are doing, they just don't believe it's wrong. There are many sociopaths out there, most of them don't find themselves in a position where they can inflict themselves on a global scale. It's disturbing that there seems to be a generation who don't really know who Hitler was and why he is worth studying.
EasternGirl
10-17-2012, 11:42 AM
Yep...I agree. And I was just about to say...sociopath...but you nailed it, Chris. A sociopath can understand the difference between right and wrong as we see it...he or she just doesn't care or doesn't agree with our view of things, or like Chris said, they don't have the morality to determine that something is wrong. Sociopaths don't have a conscience...they have no sense of remorse. Where as someone who is mentally ill...well, psychotic that is, wouldn't understand that what he/she is doing is wrong...he/she also wouldn't be able to plan an execute something like Hitler did.
I talked to the doctor. Now they are thinking that my son has something bacterial going on in his stomach. They are putting him on antibiotics. If he doesn't respond to them...they will have to do bacterial studies. I mentioned the snakes and salmonella...although my son does not handle the snakes, and I am very careful to sanitize any area where I have been working with the snakes. But the doctor said he will consider that when doing bacterial studies...just in case.

Who watches T.V. anyway? There's only a few shows I care enough to watch and those are watched online. (netflix, Hulu, NBC, etc.) Not nearly as many ads and shows get queued up if I miss them. Plus you can pause, rewind, resume, etc. without the need for a DVR. Heck, even when I do watch in on the main TV, I stream it from the web rather than watching live TV.
Blame it on the fiasco that happened some years back with the writers strike. Things are just now starting to improve.

It wasn't until years later that I got any info about them or pics. I was actually looking for another type of reptile. A subterranian, blind legless lizard. Baboons live on the savannah and still have fur. So do all other mammals there. Also, losing heat through sweating is incredibly wasteful of water. Also, our ancestors weren't hairless despite living in the same region.
Another hypothesis is that being hairless makes it easier to spot external parasites.
The aquatic ape hypothesis is just dumb, let's not get into that one at all.

Well, here's one clue... If your entire collection's survival depends on a single thermostat, you might want to re-evaluate the risk.
This might be a good question to ask BHB reptiles. You know the guys who do that youtube show called "Snake Bytes TV". I'm thinking with the collection they have, and the high value, they might know a thing or two about this. Maybe they'll do a show about it if they haven't already
Except that isn't the case.... this was simply the thermostat running the heater than kept the room's ambient temperature in check. I have other equipment running my individual heating elements and such.

I didn't mean to imply that it was, Shannon. Just giving an extreme example.;)
I'm pretty sure that just about any room thermostat you would buy these days would fail in the OFF position rather than turn the room into an oven. That's what blows me away about what happened to you. I've never heard of a thermostat failing with the result you got. I've had even ancient mercury thermostats fail and the result was, you couldn't turn the heat on. Those work by turning the switch ON when it gets cold. Room warms up, warming the mercury which then moves the switch to OFF. When they fail, they just don't turn on.

Newer style thermostats have very cheap contacts. Any voltage surge, brownout or lightning can cause the contacts to stick together. It happens more than you might think.

I had some other people contact me that have had it happen. Unfortunately, it happens more than we know.... some people just don't talk much online or would rather hide it altogether. Trust me, I didn't think that a thermostat would have done that either. I have all kinds of equipment, including one shelf that is hooked up to a light timer for my bearded dragon so that I don't have to come down and turn his lights on and off. All of it has worked really well up until now. I have since gone back to using a bit more basking areas, for my animals that like to have them, and that keeps the ambient temperature in the room nice and warm, so my garters and other temperate critters can enjoy a decent ambient temp without me needing to stress constantly. Since the lamps are already running full blast, there is no danger of them getting even hotter and cooking the room. Even now, I still check the room all of the time. It's obsessive and stressful.
EasternGirl

I definitely check my temps all the time even with thermostats hooked up...for one thing, the thermostats never give you exactly the right temp...not the ones I have anyway.
MCwyo...good luck! That is very exciting!!
Speaking of power surges and since we like to talk about the weather...we have a hurricane headed our way, it's supposed to hit around Tuesday and it is supposed to be a bad one. I suspect the worst of it will hit the beaches, which are about an hour and a half from here. Hopefully my beach place will survive it because the last one caused a tree to fall on it and put a big hole in the roof that we are still trying to fix. I need to get my beach place fixed up so I can rent it out and get some income. But either way, the storm is concerning me. I think of emergency situations...like fires and storms and such...and wonder how the heck I would get my son, all my animals, and my snakes out of the house and make it out myself. I could never leave my animals. I would be one of those crazy people sitting on the roof of my house surrounded by a flood, refusing to leave with a dog, three cats, 2 guinea pigs and a bag of snakes! On top of the worry about my house and my family and pets, they say that Halloween could be ruined for the kids. My son's birthday was ruined two years ago because of the last hurricane that hit. This just sucks. Please send positive thoughts and prayers our way.
The positive in all of this is that maybe my math exam will have to be rescheduled next week...

I just read up on Hurricane Sandy. It's a bit too early to tell if it's going to be all that bad but it does have the potential. Too many "ifs" between now and the time it's expected to hit the NE. "If's" that could mean the difference between 5 inches of rain with 65mph winds, or just some moderate rain/winds. In any case, it's supposed be over before halloween night.

This is a bit disturbing. How do you get a diagnosis of subcutaneous worms if you don't take your snake to a vet? How does one even know if deworming meds worked if you don't take your snake to a vet? How does one even know what is causing lumps on a snake, again, if you haven't seen a vet?
I know, why don't we just feed the snake a bunch of medications which are toxic, without the supervision of a vet? That'll take care of it.

I can see how that would happen. After a while, I just don't care anymore. Maybe they'll understand when their snake gets sick and dies prematurely, but I doubt it.

Why that one? There are lots of legless lizard species right here in America. From my experience, they don't make good captives. At least not any I've ever found, such as Anniella pulchra. Diet of larval insects, termites, ants, and spiders is just too difficult to provide year 'round and they have very specific microclimate needs. Even if you do manage to keep them alive, you'll rarely see them.

NJ and NY got hit pretty bad though. I hope everyone is okay. They actually closed every interstate and major road around here last night...so you couldn't evacuate even if you wanted to. Schools have been closed since yesterday. Even my doc's office is closed. The most important thing though...my son's trampoline survived...lol. He was really worried about that. Yeah...I'm 40 minutes south of Philly...about 1 hour from the Jersey shore...about 2 hours from NYC...don't ask me miles. I was watching "Terra Nova" Season 1, episode 3 and was reminded that 85 million years ago, the moon was much closer to the earth. It moves away at about 3.8 meters per century. So, eventually, it will leave earth's orbit and that would be disasterous. So I did a google search and found this: Cerebral Friday Fun – When will the Moon Leave Our Orbit? (http://www.colinmcnulty.com/blog/2008/04/18/cerebral-friday-fun-when-will-the-moon-leave-our-orbit/)

Not what I read. I do realize it's not constant but I read it fluctuates. Even if you say it's accelerating, is it accelerating at a constant predictable rate, or does the rate of acceleration fluctuate? Hmm... at any rate it still sounds to me like by the time it does leave orbit, the sun will probably no longer support life on earth anyway.

A lot of buzz going around about the crop this year. It's a bumper one. Been mild and constantly wet for several weeks now. People are going out for an hour or two, and coming back with garbage bags full. That includes a lot of very desireable edible species such as chantrels and morels. But my favorite local wild mushroom is only good for consumption, one day of it's lifespan and those are shaggy manes. They taste like medium rare fillet mignon, I'm not kidding. The species pictured above tastes like moldy dirt. LoL. But nobody eats them for their flavor.;)

Interesting. I shall look into this.
ConcinusMan
10-31-2012, 02:36 PM
The thing is, you never know where they're going to pop up. Sometimes in the spring, but usually in the fall. Sometimes on lawns, sometimes on rotting leaf litter. They usually don't grow in the same location more than a few years in a row, then they're gone. But they're common enough that I find them often. The key is to find them at the right time. They only last perhaps 30 hours. Once they drop their spores, they begin to dissolve. They will not keep in a fridge either. They can grow singly, but usually in large scattered clumps. You must eat them right after picking. Just a few hours later, they will be unfit for consumption. They're a very large species of inky cap. DO NOT consume alcohol 12 hours prior to, or 24 hours after eating them or you'll wish you were dead.
Photo of one in prime condition for eating. I prefer them raw. Part of the reason they taste like steak is that they are high in iron.

Don't eat them if you're allergic to diethylthiocarbamoy (otherwise known by the pharmaceutical names Antibuse or Disulfiram) and don't drink alcohol before or 24 hours after eating them. These have a high potential for containing this chemical in small, but varying amounts although some people report no reaction even if they eat them with alcohol. A few bites won't contain enough to do anything. The molecule inhibits your ability to metabolize ethyl alcohol. That would cause flushing and nausea if taken with alcohol. Very uncomfortable. It's othewise harmless.
You're not going to die if you do. Just a precaution to avoid a very miserable potential outcome.;)

Ack what a week, been kinda busy. Glad to hear that our east coast members have weathered the storm. My thoughts go out to that part of our country :( It looks like a lot of areas have sustained heavy damage.
Hope everyone had a good Halloween. My daughter and I painted pumpkins this year because we did not have time to carve. Guess what she decided to paint on her pumpkin of all things? T. s. concinnus. She loves our little Oregon snakes :D I will post a photo once I get it uploaded.
Already pulling our hair out as far as homebuying goes, lol. We made a backup offer on the house we wanted (it already had a contract in place), gave the sellers 7 days to reply, never herd back from them & thought it was a dead deal. Day 8, which happened to be Halloween, they counter offered and gave us 24 hours to reply  Our wonderful realator met us at 7 o'clock at night, Haloween, to sign the papers. However, we found a different house today and decided to go all in... it has no other offers on it and it is just fantastic.... better than our "dream home" that we put the back-up offer on. Fingers crossed & double crossed that our offer will be accepted... this could be the one

Also, Z's school dose a read-a-thon fundraiser every year. The theme is BEAR- "Be Excited About Reading". The kids keep track of the minutes they read over 15 days, and they get put into BEAR groups based on how many minutes they read: Teddy, Panda, Black Bear, Polar and the highest group is Grizzly..... Zoe read 3,153 minutes over 15 days!!! She was one of the few students that made it to the Grizz group, she was the top reader in 2nd grade, and she was the second highest reader in the entire school!!! She has a great love for books... she is reading at about a 5th grade level. I am so proud of my little Z, and so glad she enjoys reading so much :)
Here she is giving a high five to the BEAR, and also the total minutes the whole school read! They raised over $16,000 :)
