oh I know
and I'm not saying at all that the equipment makes the pix
but I think you've got that attention to detail, enjoyment of tinkering, and the patience to do this kind of work, given the equipment.

adamanteus
09-21-2007, 04:56 PM
The lowest Order of Mammalia, containing mammals which have only one opening or vent for the genital, urinary, and digestive organs. The Order comprises the duck-billed platypus (Ornithorhynchus paradoxus) and several species of spiny ant-eaters of the genera Tachyglossus (or Echidna)

Stefan-A
09-21-2007, 05:01 PM
It was independently described as Ornithorhynchus paradoxus by Johann Blumenbach (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Blumenbach) in 1800 (from a specimen given to him by Sir Joseph Banks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Joseph_Banks))[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platypus#_note-NLA) and following the rules of priority of nomenclature it was later officially recognised as Ornithorhynchus anatinus.[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Platypus#_note-ABRS) The scientific name Ornithorhynchus is derived from ορνιθόρυνχος ("ornithorhynkhos"), which literally means "bird snout" in Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language), and anatinus which means "duck-like" in Latin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_language).

Good one, Justin. Is it nicely coloured? Is it wild caught?

it is wild caught, colors are dark and it might be getting ready to shed though, it seem very tolerable, not to quick to move or bite so far......:)
I haven't really mucked with it yet, trying to let it settle in a bit first.....

Great. Finally got my bitch of a female (red-sided) to take a mouse (again). Played around with the light and heating for about 5 weeks and kept her off feed for the duration of that time (still wouldn't eat), punctured the skull of the mouse and squeezed out a little brain matter (still wouldn't eat), scented the mouse with a worm (grabbed the mouse but spit it out), fed her two worms and left the scented mouse in front of her. It was gone a minute later.

She was a bottomless pit half a year ago. She would eat anything that even smelt like food.

adamanteus

Glad to hear she's back on the mice again, Stefan.:)

Stefan-A
10-06-2007, 03:26 PM
Not quite there yet. She probably sees it as a big, white, fuzzy worm. Had to wrap a couple of worms around it before she took it, just rubbing them all over the mouse wasn't good enough. She was definitely interested, but didn't grab it.

Next week I'll try with 3-week old mice. One of those a week should be just right.

adamanteus
10-06-2007, 03:33 PM
Sometimes, instead of scenting a mouse/pinky, I 'post' it.....just as the accepted prey (worm etc) is almost gone, I post the pinky into the snakes still open mouth. This sometimes seems to make the switch to pinkies a little quicker. I can't explain why, and it doesn't always work, but it's a good alternative to try.

Stefan-A
10-06-2007, 03:37 PM
Tried it already, she won't fall for it. Clever girl or spoiled brat, I really can't tell. :D I'd have to shove a dozen pinkies down her throat anyway, she's not a little girl anymore. :)

drache
10-07-2007, 06:35 AM
one of my babies, who'd been taking pinkie strips had stopped eating and it turned out that he's decided it was gonna be trout and properly presented(!), or no go
so my whole theory that it was clear sailing once I got them to take rodent was erroneous - they can change their minds
however my concinnus has taken to pinkies bobbing amongst her minnows, and the ratio is changing (devious chuckle)

Stefan-A
10-07-2007, 06:45 AM

I agree completely, but we need to understand that most people are afraid of snakes and that will automatically generate that kind of response. I usually try to give an answer like: "They sing The Sound Of Silence every full moon".

One maybe less obvious problem is that we still use the word "pet" to describe them. People place snakes (well, herps, arthropods and molluscs really) in the same category as dogs, cats and guinea pigs when they try to deal with the notion of keeping an exotic animal.

People become afraid of snakes they are learning it while growing up.
When I visit a kindergarden with my snakes the small children are very interessted (when they are not afraid of me:o strange foreign man).
Only the older children sometimes don´t like looking and touching the snakes, saying: "No, not to me, my Mami doesn´t like it!"
For that we are no more telling it to the parents before my visit to let the children get their own experiences. :D

drache
10-09-2007, 04:52 AM
I always thought that fear of snakes is learned, but I am no longer sure about that
a couple of weeks ago I had a friend of Mikhaila's over, who's got a little sister (5 or so)
the parents are not afraid of snakes - find them interesting
the brother thinks they're cool
I picked out a mellow baby as the least threatening because the little girl wanted to try holding a snake although she was afraid
the moment she touched the little snake, she completely freaked, screeching and crying - something about the way it felt, I guess
I don't get it, but I do think that for some people it's some deep fear that has nothing to do with anything real

Oh now that's funny. What a rough life... I should be able to lie on the sofa all day and be fed... by big, strapping, handsome young men... in loin cloths... oh wait, what were we talking about???? :D

I had a mystery snail, Stanley, that would float upside down in the tank and I would drop tiny pieces of fruit and veggies into his mouth. Well, more like in the general vicinity of where I percieved a snail mouth to be. He was pretty lazy too. lol

I disagree. People are inherently afraid of snakes, to some extent we are afraid of them too. It just makes them that much more fascinating. People, especially kids, can learn to deal with that fear, but most people never get the opportunity and that's why the fear persists. All of us recognize that every snake we encounter is possibly a venomous one. Even non-human animals have that fear.
