Yes, I get the point. Mine is that nature is pretty much going to have to "put up with it" until something just happens on its own.

The message I take from it is not to be too extreme on either side. It's really great when everybody starts pitching in and doing their part to help the environment, but some people just take the whole issue of "saving" everything too far. It's especially irritating when many extremists are hypocrites.

How far is "too far"? Successfully preserving a species that we would otherwise have wiped out by thoughtlessly paving over its habitat? Successfully preserving thousands of species that we would otherwise have wiped out by thoughtlessly releasing certain gasses that trap heat into the atmosphere? What's extreme? Not wanting to do these things? Seeing the consequences of your actions and other people's actions and wanting to inform people about the problems and actually do something to reduce them? Are the extremists perhaps the people who protest, because they have no other way of bringing attention to problems?

Yes, species go extinct. Yes, changes happen naturally. That's no excuse for us wittingly causing it to happen, any more than the existence of death justifies killing people.

I found that math became easier for me the farther I went with it. I was in a tightly-controlled program, though, and I had to either sink (leave the program) or swim. Four straight semesters of calculus at 7:40am wasn't fun, but learning to do calculus early in the morning made taking the final exams in the afternoon a breeze.

This class is clinical math for nursing...it is supposed to be about learning dosing for nursing....which involves ratio and proportion. When it gets to that point, I will be fine. But right now we are doing complex fractions and word problems...I hate word problems! If I can figure out how to read the problem and set the math up...I'm usually fine with the math. But I can never get that far...I can't figure out how to set the darn problem up. I already have my first exam next week. Stefan-A

Y2K was a little bit different. There was a risk that systems that depend on accurate dates (archives, databases, possibly some navigation systems) could have been affected by it. Of course nothing even remotely world-ending would have happened, but it could have been a real (expensive) mess if we hadn't solved it. And we did solve it, it was no big deal.

ConcinusMan

There is no "end of the world" specific date. The truth is, the world has been in the process of rapid change for some time now. Therefore the end of the world as we (humanity) know it is already occuring. Mass extinction and rapid climate change is already in full swing. When the "dust settles" the world will be very different from what we know it to be, but all of us here will be long dead before then. My point is, it's a process, not a single event or specific day. Even if it takes tens of thousands of years, it's still practically overnight in geological time.

If I am to take it as "Suddenly and unexpectedly, as a robber breaks into a dwelling. A thief comes without giving any warning, or any indications of his approach."

Then *FAIL*

Any idiot can see it's coming or already happening. Even if it's a sudden impact of an object from space, we'll see it coming well in advance. For example, if calcuations are correct, there will be an impact or very near collision with earth in the year 2040.

"Specifically, those odds are currently at 1 in 625 for an impact on Feb. 5, 2040. But like most odds, these are fluid. From 2013 to 2016, the asteroid will be observable from the ground, and that will give NEO watchers a better idea of its orbit and future trajectory"

They'll probably call "false alarm" by 2016

Yeah, I realized that after I posted it. That reminds me of lyrics from a song, Eeels - Novicaine For The Soul. "..Jesus and his lawyers are coming back". Cracks me up.

OK, how about this one from Revelations: “I saw a large ball of fire, with a long tail that descended rapidly from the sky and fell before our incredulous eyes,”

or, "the stars will fall from the sky"

or "The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky"

Digressed a little there anyway. I just think the "end of the world as we know it" , that is, the world we know since recorded history, isn't just going to end one day. It's already happening. There very well may be an extinction level event in the future, perhaps an object hitting the earth, but probably not before "the world as we know it" is a thing of the past.

The truth is, there is a current mass extinction taking place. It began before humans had any influence on global change and continues to accellerate.

Still, it's just a vision.

ConcinusMan
09-11-2012, 07:31 PM
Yeah, just a vision/prophecy. Still, hitting the atmosphere is not what I would call "falling from the sky". The sky is above, obviously. If something falls from the sky, then logic dictates that it hits the earth.

I do get your point. We should just dismiss it. I apologize if this offends anyone but my true belief is that the Bible is complete hogwash anyway. If you get a chance, read this month's "Science News" magazine. There's a fascinating article on recent human evolution. Very recent new information based on some fossils and DNA.

Oh, cool! it's available online. You can read the entire article. It's a good read. Tangled Roots - Science News (http://www.sciencenews.org/view/feature/id/342924/title/Tangled_Roots)

"Clear signs of interbreeding have left archaeologists and other students of the Stone Age scrambling to revisit existing ideas about Homo sapiens’ evolutionary past. A dominant theory holding that humans evolved in Africa and left on neat one-way routes to Asia and Europe has to be revised"

"An ancient finger bone recently landed a genetic sucker punch on scientists studying human evolution"

I just love it when that happens. When you discover that much of what you (or science) thought was truth must be re-examined based on new information.

I believe in the values presented. I believe in a creator. Beyond that, I don't have much, if any faith in the translation or that it hasn't been "tweeked" or messed with before we had the chance to read it.;) Let's just say that God really did create man and all the life on earth. Well then, if that is true, then why does that have to conflict with evolution theories? It doesn't have to. I think that evolution does occur, but it is a creative process that takes time. Lots of time. It doesn't happen in 7 days.

Just for shits and giggles, read the link I posted above. One cannot just completely dismiss it, unless of course, you're one of those people for which "believing is seeing" rather than visa-versa, and that you believe that science is wrong about everything. The thing about the human ego is that it dismisses evidence that is contrary to what you fully believe to be the truth. The ego cannot handle being wrong, so it will dismiss clear evidence if it conflicts.

With that said, I can admit that my earlier statement about the Bible could be completely wrong. I am completely willing to say I was wrong if one could ever show me the evidence to prove it.

As Stefan stated earlier, friends should not discuss religion or politics. I'll leave it at that. Read the article. Not trying to "convert" or take you from your beliefs (as if I could) Just a fascinating article. Take it as you wish.

Still, hitting the atmosphere is not what I would call "falling from the sky".
It's exactly what I'd call it.

The sky is above, obviously.
Obviously the sky doesn't really exist. It's just a term we use for vertical distances we can't reach even if we stand on our tippy toes.

If something falls from the sky, then logic dictates that it hits the earth.
With a high probability, anything that will hit the atmosphere, will eventually hit the earth if it doesn't burn up on its way down. A possible exception in history could be the Tunguska event, which was at one point suspected of having been a meteoroid that pretty much just "bounced" off the atmosphere. But last time I heard, the notion was it blew up in the atmosphere, before ever hitting the ground.

I apologize if this offends anyone but my true belief is that the Bible is complete hogwash anyway.
This is the issue I was referring to when I said nothing good can come of this. It's a touchy subject and either you're forced to keep your beliefs to yourself, or you offend someone.

I just love it when that happens. When you discover that much of what you (or science) thought was truth must be re-examined based on new information.
Science doesn't deal with truths, it deals with facts, which are used to form hypotheses and theories. I wouldn't say that this was "much", either. It doesn't change much at all.

She made us, and we made baseballs. The thing is, we created baseballs but we cannot create the materials (atoms, elements, molecules) they are made from. We can only use materials provided by the physical universe. So yeah, God makes baseballs.

To clarify, I say "she" because God created "man" (human kind) in Gods image. If that's true, we are all female by "default". That is, we are automatically female unless a certain hormone or something like that, is present at the right time during gestation, and it turns us male. If you don't think so, take off your shirt and look at your chest. What do you see?

I will risk offending again. The thing is, I am not offended by anyone's belief and they shouldn't be offended by mine. But I think another "tweek" done to the bible long ago, made men who wish to dominate women, re-write the Bible to make it look like men were the first and women subserviant. Nothing can further from the truth. We are all female by default! Woman came first. They know this by our genetic makeup.

It's decided at conception, but the nipples are there because they develop separately from the sex features and they're not detrimental enough to warrant getting rid of. Hormones dictate the development of characteristics, but they don't determine the sex, the chromosomes do that.

I will risk offending again. The thing is, I am not offended by anyone's belief and they shouldn't be offended by mine.
Well, that depends on a lot. If your religion happens to have teachings that, when applied, offend someone (eg. group X should be killed), then I think it's perfectly fine to be offended. Especially if the "offender" happens to agree with those teachings and doesn't just accept them as law.

But I think another "tweek" done to the bible long ago, made men who wish to dominate women, re-write the Bible to make it look like men were the first and women subserviant.
The desire to dominate women is as old as agriculture. It was only when people settled down, that it became beneficial to start controlling women and who they reproduce with, because only then did people actually have property worth passing down to their offspring, eg. arable land. The bible merely continues that tradition, there was never any need to rewrite it for that reason. It has been added to quite extensively after the fact, but not quite rewritten. Unless you count translations and the heaps of problems they cause.

I actually saw an excellent graph once, which showed the different parts of the bible and which of them came from which type of source. I should try to find it again.

Nothing can further from the truth. We are all female by default! Woman came first. They know this by our genetic makeup.
Asexual organisms came first, then hermaphrodites, then both females and males simultaneously. That's what we know.

I believe I understand what you're saying, but there are two things I want to point out about the domination thing:

1. If you've grown up in a culture that really subjugates women, you would most likely already have been shoved into the subservient role as a child.

2. Women are still being beaten into submission in all societies and physical and mental abuse is not something that a person just shrugs off. Man or woman, anyone can be dominated. What if the gloves come off?

Actually, I'd go so far as to say that the only ones not being dominated, are the alphas of society and most societies are devoid of alphas.

There comes a point when you wake up one day and say "enough is enough". You become empowered. Sure...I still run into men who attempt to dominate me...but I usually see the signs right away and walk away. I pretty much suck at video games. My son has an Xbox, a Wii, and a Nintendo DS. I don't play any of them. The only gamer I have ever been is a larper. I do occasionally play MMORPGs. I used to be into WoW.

How does one perform a risk assessment to prevent a similar situation from happening in their homes?

ConcinusMan
09-18-2012, 07:32 PM
Well, here's one clue... If your entire collection's survival depends on a single thermostat, you might want to re-evaluate the risk.

This might be a good question to ask BHB reptiles. You know the guys who do that youtube show called "Snake Bytes TV". I'm thinking with the collection they have, and the high value, they might know a thing or two about this. Maybe they'll do a show about it if they haven't already

Well, here's one clue... If your entire collection's survival depends on a single thermostat, you might want to re-evaluate the risk.

I have a rack filled with corns that uses a helix DBS-1000 thermostat and the rack supposedly has a self extinguishing feature in case it over heats, to prevent a fire.

ConcinusMan
09-18-2012, 08:04 PM
I do agree that that was a flaw

No question about that, but how could one possibly foresee a thermostat failing would cause the room heat to get stuck on full blast. I have always assumed that it would fail in the off position. Had that been the case then the worst that could happen is coming home to a few tropical species that are a little chilly, but alive.

Like Stefan was saying, I think this would be an excellent time to evaluate our own equipment and plan for the unimaginable. Nobody thinks it can happen to them, and yet it happens.

Stefan-A
09-19-2012, 12:21 AM
How does one perform a risk assessment to prevent a similar situation from happening in their homes?
By going through every single imaginable failure of equipment and thinking about what sort of harm that may cause. The relevance of the probability of failure decreases with increasing consequences. That's the assessment part. What measures you take to address them, is a different matter.

I do virus removal and protection. I was a tech at a local computer shop. I always use ESET smart security and highly recommend it. It will never slow your system down or miss a virus. I can't say that about any of the "top" antivirus programs. They are all crap IMO. Especially AVG, McAfee, Norton. If I had just 50 cents for every virus I found on systems running those programs...

I just fixed an acer aspire one netbook. It had a rootkit which corrupted the master boot record, and numerous other nasties on it. It was running McAfee and it was up to date too.

Definitely but I don't think mine had anything to do with the weather. It's been hot and dry. However, it finally did just now cool down. Now we're getting morning clouds before afternoon sunshine and now instead of 80's and 90's, we're in the 70's. Still hasn't rained but one time in 3 months, and it was only 0.4 inches. It's bone dry. Everything's brown and this is western WA! The decidious trees are wilting and dropping leaves. The evergreens don't look much better. Azalea's and rodies are dying!

Stomach viruses suck. I am extremely susceptible to them because I have to take medicine on a regular basis that suppresses the acid in my stomach...and as I learned in school, acid actually protects your stomach from bacteria and viruses. So, if there is a stomach virus within a 50 mile radius...I'll get it.

I finally understand the math I am doing now in my class. So perhaps I will get a good grade on my next exam and bring my grade up. We are now working on calculating dosing for medication...that makes practical sense to me.

Of all the commercial tomato plant varieties you can buy, "Celebrity" is my favorite. It's an F1 hybrid produced by Bonnie Nurseries. It has a tender skin, very few seed pockets, is super juicy and very delicious.

For some reason, one of three plants this year just went berzerk. I don't think I've ever grown any tomato plant this large.

This is a single plant. Planted in May at about 24 inches high. Producing tons of ripe tomatoes now. More than I can eat. (By the way, the "insert image" function is still broken. I had to type the codes manually)

If it's been warm they're probably coming out at night when rodents are active. road cruising after dark would probably get you better luck. I bet they're getting ran over at night or early morning/twilight. Down in SoCal in the desert, new road kills get discovered in the morning so they're getting killed when it's dark. The high desert can get cold at night and the roads stay pretty warm.

And by road I mean my neighborhood street.. There's no much to cruise around here. There's woods a the end of the street leading to a disc golf course, but seemingly vacant of all life lol.

Was just watching "Swamp Wars" which is about the "Venom 1" team in south Florida. The show chronicals their encounters with the snakes/animals of that area.
Many of the scenes are re-enactments to so-called actual events.
They were talking about the Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snake (Crotalus adamanteus) and one that bit a Mail Carrier that reached inside a mailbox.
The announcer said the mail carrier survived the "brutal attack"
Brutal, really. The snake bit the guy in defense but they call it brutal.
Always hyping up the negative.
Even shows were they don't kill the reptiles they still paint a terrible picture of the animals.

Animal planet just pisses me off now, they're so anti-animal now it's ridiculous. How do you go from Steve Irwin to Rattlesnake Republic. Teaches nothing, disses animals, focuses on the peoeple..

Animal Planet - Surprisingly Human.

Any trama to the ringneck bodies?

They were covered in sand and being eated by ants, couldn't really even tell it was a snake at first, only way I knew they were ringnecks was the signature yellow, spotted belly.

Actually one of them was in half... That would probably be considered a trauma to the body lol

Where I used to live any dead snakes were usually killed by people.. I'd just assume that except I don't anyone else has ever gone down where i go, I come out wet, muddy, scratched and eaten alive by mosquitos, it's like 30 foot drop down a really big climb by the end of the creek, its like rock climbing to in mud to get out, or a knee deep wade trough the creek. and nowhere near any houses. No one's taking a stroll and stepping on snake heads.

The animal planet thing really bugs me too the way they have gone with some of their shows.
To a none snake person a bite from an Eastern Diamondback might seem pretty brutal but AP loves to make it sound like snakes are chasing people and hiding around so they can bite you. It is irresponsible to have these shows where the only goal is ratings. just because they have the right to do it does not mean they should.

The key to all this as well as life in general is balance. We used to have balance but now we are a country of extremes.
Even out government. We were a great nation because of the balance of power and no side could take complete control and it worked for a long time. Now we can't even talk without attacking the other side. I am a moderate independent and I am so sick of the way we try to get ahead by attacking instead of promoting our good points.

Balance in wildlife is no exception. You will often hear about how we are invading areas of wildlife and it is true. What were we supposed to do back 200 years only have one city and build straight up. No we have to keep in balance and use our heads to educate not fight each other.

OK I'm done

have a great weekend everyone.
