I don't think it keeps well for leftovers, though because of the gravy... I'm keeping mine for dinner later, we'll see if it gets gross.

Sometimes you need to add a little milk or water to rehydrate it! The rice will suck up a lot of gravy.

Yeah, I ended up letting our dog eat the rice. She doesn't have dog food right now (curse you, high bills!) so she enjoyed it. The chicken got pretty mushy because of the seasonings that were on it.

Okay...just catching up to this thread...hmm...where to start...well, I have a large dagger that I keep under my bed in case burglers or rapists break into my house. And, from what I know, we Americans have also toyed with the idea of selective breeding...I think we are constantly conducting research to determine if we could somehow select sex and pick certain traits to have in fetuses...there has been a lot of controversy on the topic. Hmmm....what did I miss? Oh right...according to the forum, I am always online...because I never actually sign off...lol. And...I like being a brunette much better than a blonde...I have gotten many compliments saying it looks better with my skin coloring.

Here is me as a brunette...with my son:

Oh...and my son's baseball team almost made it to the championships...they were eliminated right before the championship game. So...I am very proud of them...they creamed some of the best teams in the league! Now it's time for swimming. His first swim meet was yesterday!

Nice blades.
Our house has more than its fair share of knives and swords but most only get brought out for historic reenactment events. The rest are in the kitchen. I just found an amazing set of Japanese vegettable knives this morning. (And we ain't talkin' gunshot these re nice traditional blades that hold a razor edge.)

So...to catch everyone up on my life...my son's team won their swim meet yesterday. I think my son took first place in a couple of his races. We had to be at the meet at 8am and it ran until 1pm and then we had to be back up at the pool at 8pm until 11pm to watch that Hugo movie...which I personally thought was depressing and the robot thing creeped me out. In other news, I didn't like what the hair dresser did with my hair, so I tried to make it darker and now it is red. Jeez. So now I have to go out and buy some more hair dye and try to make it dark brown. Also, after six years of being single...I got involved with someone a few months ago and fell really hard for him...and of course, he broke my heart. He decided that because he has feelings for me he has to end things because they will just end badly at some point anyway. In other words...he is nuts. That is why I haven't been on here a lot lately or returning phone calls...I've been pretty depressed...this is exactly why I stayed single for so long. Love sucks.

It looks pretty red in the sun though. But sorry...my camera is not working and I am fixing the color today!

Thanks for all of the concern and support over my whole "love gone south" thing. The only thing keeping me going right now is that I know that it wasn't on me. I didn't do anything wrong...this was his issue. And it is his loss. He will be sorry one day when he realizes what he gave up.

I was just asked to weld someone into a box. welding is very useful and practical, but wth? I don't even know what to think of that...

why would they want to be welded into a box?

kerensa
06-26-2012, 11:58 AM
I asked that very question and was told they "liked to be kept captive" whatever that means. I was entirely too busy imagining the heat rising in a metal box with a strange little fella inside... I've not yet decided what his issue is, but one part of it is a complete lack of familiarity with what welding actually is.

edit to add: I no longer really worry about the why when asked to do odd welding jobs for the most part. I've now been asked to do a few strange jobs, but this oe is just so, well... deadly. I just have to wonder.

It's bad out here. We get afternoon storms but no rain, only more lightning. My good friend and dog walker is working on finding foster homes for evacuated pets. Most of her clients are willing to take dogs and cats, but I've offered to care for any snakes that need a place to stay temporarily. We've had a hectic week moving house, still boxes everywhere and loads to do before the house is straight. I'm having to stop Char doing too much (she's 7 and a bit months in now, 9 weeks to go) but she's building a nest and is difficult to stop. The snakes have comfortable new quarters, or rather same old vivs on new tables all in one room and with the extra space here and the radix with negative fecal floats I've been able to break out a sixth viv- photos to follow later. Colorado wildfire: Aerial photo shows about 300 homes destroyed in Waldo Canyon Fire - The Denver Post (http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_20957092/tens-thousands-remain-homeless-wake-waldo-canyon-fire)

Waldo Canyon is not the biggest fire, but it's burning within Colorado Springs city limits. ~300 homes destroyed so far as revealed by aerial photography.

The Feds are taking over to contain a small fire near Boulder before it gets out of hand. Currently at about 300 acres.

The weather helped a bit last night. A little rain (we only get about 12" of rain a year and most of that is in snow form), cooler temps and more help arriving are always good.

Four years for me. Guess I should at least try to start dating.

I heard much of CO has broken heat records dating back to the 1870's. Wow.

I heard much of CO has broken heat records dating back to the 1870's. Wow.

Yeah, we hit 108 degrees in Denver the other day, 103 the day before. I think humidity was in the single-digits but it's still pretty brutal. Today's high is "only" 93. I think our average for this time of year is mid-80s.

I'm from the east coast so the heat here just has a different feel. In MD, a temp of 100 degrees + the humidity gives a heat index of ~115. CO is so dry that the heat index is lower than the actual temp. MD summers are like living inside someone's mouth whereas CO summers are like putting your head in an oven.

The dry winter and spring, the high temperatures, and the pine bark beetle aftermath are really a perfect storm for fire season. As far as I know most of the fires were started by lightning so they're not even something that could have been prevented.

Wow...I lived in Greeley for a while. I am very saddened to hear about what is going on out there with the wildfires. I will pray for everyone. Steveo...what you and your friend are doing for the evacuated animals is a wonderful thing. I always get so worried about the animals in situations like this. I wish I was out there to help.

Tress...skip the dating thing...it's just a mess. I was perfectly happy alone until I tried to start dating. It would have to be a pretty sure thing to get me to try it again at this point. Sure, it sucks when I go to my pool and it's full of happy families...I feel like I stand out like a sore single thumb. But how does that old song go..."Owner of a lonely heart...much better than an owner of a broken heart"...or something like that.

Oh...I forgot to mention a funny thing that happened last night. My father is disabled and spends most of his time in his room in his bed...don't feel bad...he is also an alcoholic ***. Sorry for the language. He is quite the pig too...he eats constantly and leaves food all over his room. So all of the sudden last night he calls my mother into his room and tells her that he is sure that he heard something crawling around under his bed...and did one of my snakes get out?! Lol. My mom and I were cracking up. I told her to tell him snakes don't crawl and you can't really hear them slithering around. He said it sounded like something moving on paper. I said he probably has a rat or a mouse in his room because he keeps it so nasty in there! Ha ha ha. I really wouldn't want any of my snakes going in that room. :D I don't think they would go in there if they managed to escape either. I said...stick the cat in there under the bed and if there is a mouse in there...he'll catch it. Just kidding...poor mouse will probably run out of there soon enough.

CO summers are like putting your head in an oven.

Do that often? :p I do know what you mean though. I live in the Mojave Desert remember. Just here in the NW again for a few months, perhaps until Sept.

Just 85 degrees can be downright miserable in western WA, (75% humidity is a b****) but 95 or even 100 in the desert isn't miserable at all and the high desert cools way down, really fast after sunset. Very tolerable even at 100 degrees, since the humidity is usually only between 4-7 percent.

I'm hearing that conditions have been pretty good for the last 24hrs or so. A small percentage of people have been allowed to go home. It's getting cloudy again so hopefully we'll get a few more rain showers. Even a 15 minute sprinkle will help.

Marnie, you need to bribe the hippos with promises of bunnies and pistachios... But you might want to have some molten lava handy if you don't plan on keeping your promise. The hippos really seem to enjoy being covered in it. You should also feed them rocks. It makes it harder for them to dance. Mutant beetles will only cause you trouble. They enjoy eating ladies underwear. Throwing well worn boxer shorts onto your roof will keep them from eating your underoos.

Does anyone think this is out of line? Because I do... My mom is constantly in my things... And I'm an adult, and there's obviously stuff she doesn't need to see. 3 days ago, she stole my camera to do some stupid 'ghost hunting'... She never asked, she took my money, too. I've told her, repeatedly, do not touch or take my things, do not look through my things.. and most of all, stay out of my office. She always puts my paperwork in stupid places and loses it, throws it away or stuffs it somewhere where I can't find it. I've tolerated it since I turned 16, that's a long time to deal with her screwing around with my things. She's the reason that I failed some of my classes in highschool. I really wish that I could just move away and remove her from my life. I can easily get her kicked out, since my 'dad' owns the property.. and she's broken many, many rules that he laid out. I'd have to live with my grandparents, who live in a house that is kind of smaller than this trailer. If I make a noise or move enough to startle her she freaks out and yells ar me, and she has the sudden reaction of hitting me. I have to slink around the house hoping she isn't near wherever I'm going. I'm getting tired of it.. I mean, why wont she learn. She keeps complaining that her kids stole from her.. So, what... Does that make it okay to steal things from me? No, of course not. I have ocd.. It sends me into a rage when someone moves my things around, and it sends me into even more of a rage when I can't find something. She always says 'oh I have ocd I can't help it if I decide your room is too messy... I really don't mean it!' And then she goes and does it again, the day after. I can't sleep because she's in my stuff. It's really pissing me off.

Tough situation to be in Chantel. Sounds like the best thing would be to set a goal of being on your own and working hard towards that goal.
I can't really say why she violates your personal space and property but she may think she's entitled to do so since she's your mom. That of course doesn't make it right but it might explain some of it.
I wish you the best and hope you can find a good solution to the situation as this isn't healthy for you or your mother.

My best bet would be moving out. Her skull is thicker than this trailer. My therapist has told her to back off, too. She did for about 3 days. I've only got a total of 10 hours of sleep in the past 7 days, and I haven't eaten in 2 (because of her, of course), so perhaps I'm more irritable than I usually would be. She's really pushing it, though.

Invisible Snake

Parents always say "as long as your living under my roof you have to follow my rules" no matter how ridiculous those rules are, but that should be your motivation to move out and become independant.

She's told me and promised me, my bedroom and my office are mine, and I can do what I like in them. I'm sure she wouldn't appreciate me punching a hole in the wall, though... But I wouldn't do that, because it's stupid and would break my nails.

My avatar is from Wapsi Square... It's a webcomic. It's a really awesome one too, it has a lot of mythology. This particular one is Jin, one of the chimeras.

And on a happier note... I actually learned part of a choreography, which added up to 2 hours of learning, heading on 3... That's more exercise than I do in a week (back issues) and the little 'exercise high' is helping me stay awake long enough to go to the store and get something to eat. Exercising on an empty stomach isn't fun... I'll probably exercise til I drop.

EasternGirl
07-03-2012, 11:02 AM
I actually learned...the dysfunctional way...when I was 16...that the law does state that even if you are underage (I know you aren't but I'm making a point) and living under your parent's roof...any thing in your possession...even if they paid for it...is yours by law. My parents kicked me out several times when I was a teenager and they would refuse to give me my things or my car that they paid for. I brought the police to my house with me...and the police informed my parents that they had to give me all of my possessions and my car. What is that law...possession is 9/10 the law or something...anyway....your stuff is your stuff and she has no right to go through it or take it. I would also work to getting out of there. The things that you have told me about your mother...ugh. I told you...you are always welcome to come here. I wasn't kidding about that. My door is always open to you if it gets to be too much.

Congrats on the exercising. My depression is getting very bad this time. It may have a lot to do with my surgery and hormonal changes...I think the break-up just kind of triggered it all. I may have to look into going into the day-hospital program at the psych hospital. It's a nice program...I've been in it before for my depression. You just go for the day...it's like "crazy camp" for adults...lol. I'll keep you guys posted.

well I brought home a rat last night. He is full grown and was on clearance because he is a "vicious animal" was told you can't pick him up because he bites and does it hard. that if you try to do anything with him he makes a horrible screaming noise. That he was brought in by a couple who claimed he was their daughters pet and she has turned out to be allergic to him. He came in as an adult and they don't know anything about him except he has been like this since he first came in. I've never seen an adult rat in this store before. They said he has been in the back room for the past 6 months, and they are all afraid of him.

I reached into the cage and let him smell me and was slow and non threatening and decided he was just shy and scared. The teenager who works in the pet section came back to show me how you "have" to move him. She hit the side of the tank, which made him run to the far corner. then she went in with this long metal can (she had gone into the back to get it) and tried to force him into the can by whipping him on the but with a loop of metal coat hanger. Yes he was making horrible noises and freaking out. she ignored my objections. I decided I was taking him home, even if he is vicious. a dollar well spent. so he was boxed up and the box was making awful noises and it was obvious he was freaking inside.
Part way home I decided I couldn't take it any more and opened the box. he was running in circles and digging around trying to find a place to hide. I let him smell my hand and he did that jump and roll over (the don't hurt me movement hamsters do- never seen a rat do it before) after about a half hour he was calm enough and I got him home.
I left him in the open box until I had a tank ready. Its only a 20 gallon and he is going to need a 40 gallon (but I will be buying it some where else later) and went slow, by this time he was allowing me to pet him without jumping and I eventually could pick him up and put him in the tank. last night anytime I noticed he was not in the hide I gave him I let him smell me and stroked him gently while speaking softly to him.
This morning I did the same thing until he was very calm with that. I picked him up and let him crawl around on me. held him about 5 minutes and put him back. and went through the soft talking and petting till he was ready to be picked up again. out slightly longer.

I find nothing vicious about him. he wants to smell me every time I put my hand in the tank. he freaks if anything moves fast (who can blame him) but he actually likes being handled gently and now comes over readily to get some petting and attention. It hasn't been even a full day. This tells me that everything wrong with him has something to do with a loop of coat hanger and a tin can. :(

what is wrong with people?

Moral of the story, If you need to surrender a pet to a new caregiver, pick them yourself and don't count on a pet store to find them a new home.

(store in question is CountryMax.)

Stefan-A
07-04-2012, 05:09 AM
I'd be somewhat more inclined to blame the family it came from (allergy my ***, oldest excuse in the book), than the (incompetent) people who ended up handling it with tools because of how "vicious" it was.

kerensa
07-04-2012, 05:25 AM
I'm not sure who to blame, I'm not sure it matters. Likely it is everyone so far. I can't be sure I'm not pushing him too fast, and he won't end up a nervous wreck. I know for sure he is no more vicious than I am. He is calming down much faster than I expected. I just had him out for a longer time. he went searching through my hair and checking in case I kept a snack in my ear. curious and very happy seeming to have slow moving non threatening attention, he even went to another person of his own choice. he does scurry and try to hide if I move fast. Likely that will last a long time.

I had planned on getting rats when my ball python moves onto Juvenal rats, won't be more than a few more months. perhaps this was the universes way to move me along in that direction... I think he would profit from another rat for company, and a nice female is likely as good a choice as any other.

That's so sad to hear this poor little guy has been mistreated. I personally would say both parties(original owners and the pet store) have a play in it. Well got him his 40 gallon breeder and a wheel. He's been out and gone to three different people with no issue. yes he is jumpy if one moves real fast. He is a BIG solid rat. Sad.

Crazy camp is my funny way of describing a day program at the psych hospital that is supposed to be for people with depression, anxiety...life problems. It used to be for people that weren't dysfunctional enough to be inpatient at the hospital....but let me tell you things have changed. I got there yesterday and it was wall to wall filled with the looniest of the loonies. People in full-blown schizophrenic episodes talking to people that weren't there and swatting at imaginary things in the air...preaching about Jesus and Buddha because they believe themselves to be prophets or actually God themselves, one guy who did one too many hits of LSD and thinks he is Jesus....OMG! You couldn't concentrate in group therapy because of Jesus interrupting and talking about "the linear dimensions of the universe consuming us as a whole"....I made three friends...the only other sane people in the program...and two of them are guys that I think are competing on who will stalk me first. I'm going back today but if it is like it was yesterday...I am going to tell them that I will not be back and that I am cured because seeing all of the people in there proved to me that I am perfectly sane and doing well and obviously can recover from my depression on my own!

Congrats Steve and to your daughter too! I didn't really qualify for grants and decided to go to grad school and now I owe 100 grand in school loans...for degrees in a field I no longer work in...now I have to go back to school to get a job in a field that will allow me to pay my loans. Luckily the state is paying for nursing school for me. Being a poor, single mom does pay off sometimes...lol. Crazy camp hasn't gotten any better...except for the fact that I think they put Confusious in the state asylum. We played bingo yesterday. Will someone please explain how playing bingo is going to cure my depression? Lol....I think I am going to tell them on Monday that I want to find a doctor and therapist for outpatient therapy. The program is a waste of my time. Maybe I could just go to an old folks home...if we are just going to play bingo and sit around and no one is going to adjust my medicine...:D. Up at 6am today...getting ready to go to a swim meet in 100 degree weather. If I survive that...I can survive anything! See, now that is therapy. Ha ha...

If they had you play bingo and used each number and letter as an emotion, which you share.. it could be beneficial. My therapist and I played a lot of games, modified into explaining certain emotions and such. But, bingo could be beneficial to some people simply because you focus on the numbers being called, so it takes your mind off the bad things. I would be tempted to just hang out in the pool if it was that hot!

I got a belly dance video I've been wanting for 3 years! :D It was on sale for 10 dollars. But, now that I've been able to see it through..... I can tell it's not meant for beginners. I've had to use VLC to slow it down 40% just so I can do it... But I really do like it. The warmup alone makes me feel calm and collected.. and sort of high, in a way. It took my back pain right away.

Anyway, sorry I haven't been on a lot lately guys...I miss all of you. With crazy camp during the day and swim meets at night...I have been super busy. So our landlord kinda gave us an ultimatum... His wife really wants to sell the acreage we are living on, and if we cannot come up with the money to buy it out right, then they would give us three months from the sale date.
Cole n I both really want to buy this place as it is perfect for us. Has lots of room for my horse, there are rows of trees, has a barn, big garage that you can fit four cars in or two trucks n two cars, a shed n a hay shed, dug out/pond, big enough house for all my tanks n all our stuff n most treasured space n peace n quiet. Lots of room for more snakes too!

The thing is neither us have been at our jobs for 6 months yet, both always had jobs but lately have changed. I have no credit, and Cole is working on getting good credit with credit cards. What do we do? How can we buy this place? How do we get a mortgage?
There is no where else we want to live, this is the perfect place for us.
Its a steal of a deal too, 200,000. for these eight acres.

I know it will all work out in time, but kinda stressing about losing this place.
Kinda really stressing. How to come up with the money.

Michelle...I don't know if you have this sort of thing over there...but here, at least in my state, we have a government run program for first time home buyers in which the state helps you with a loan. You may want to find out if they have something like that there. The landlord would not work with you to lease to own...making payments toward buying the house? I know also...when I had my own apartment once...I had to provide proof of my job and income...through a letter from my boss since I had not worked at my job for very long...they accepted the letter in place of proof that I had my job for a certain amount of time. I don't know if any of this would work in your situation...just some ideas. :)

I shared pictures of my snakes and talked about them a little bit at crazy camp yesterday. Explaining what a herpetoculturist is and so forth. Many people reacted as I expected..."Ewww! Snakes! I don't like them!"...but I was pleasantly surprised that a few people wanted to see pictures and hear about my snakes...and one girl told me I was so lucky and that she wanted snakes and wanted to know more about garters. One lady told me about her boa. :) People can surprise you...

This adorable calf was wandering around in my camp today. We found his owner and got him back where he belongs. By the looks of it, he spent the whole night back at our camp. (lots of little "cow piles" on the ground)

Dorothy and I were sitting in our favourite shady spot when we heard this little "moo" come from the woods, the dogs heard it too.. so after I locked the dogs in the camper we set out to wrangle the steer.

Light of Dae, my husband and I are currently going through the house buying hassel. I was worried about my credit, because I have never had a credit card or loan in my name. BUT I learned that you can provide a non traditional credit history when applying for a mortgauge. You can provide the bank with bill paying history such as rent, utilities, ect. and show your creditworthiness in that way.

Also, even though you have not been at your jobs for a very long time, if you can show a solid, stable, long term work history that might not be a huge problem.

Read up & do some research on homebuying, go over your budget, and then talk to a housing councelor or a loan officer. Get a free prequalification (which will not effect your credit) and you will get a better idea of where you stand.

Here's a link that might be helpful for you: CMHC (http://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/en/co/buho/index.cfm)

Best of luck!!

Anyone else having a bad Friday the 13th?:p

I guess mine hasn't been so bad, not much worse than a regular bad day! But it started out annoying! Within the first 20 minutes of being at work I: First, banged my head on an open cage, because I wasn't looking. Second, scraped my arm on another open cage. Third, walked through a GIANT spiderweb, and (fourth) while freaking out wiping it(and possibly the spider!) off of me, I whacked my pinkie super hard on my belt buckle! :( I just went up to the front desk and said(in a whiny voice) I'm goin home!!:(:p Haha but everything else was pretty much normal afterwards....I just thought that was going to be the beginning of a horrbile day!

well its finally a quiet day at home. These days I'm at feild school about 12 hours a day. To make matters worse the work is being done on the house. So days to just kick back and relax are few and far between.

yesterday I got home while the workers were still here. the front porch was off. I saw there was a poured wall about 18 inches high that ends about 5 inches above ground level and a dirt floor that slopes down to about 8 foot deep against the cellar wall with a flat bottom a little over a foot wide. I'm not sure why this was done but I'm having the porch put in with a one inch gap between this "wall" on the side. the sides are solid and will be insulated so the gap isn't likely to bother us that much. I'm hoping that the local snakes will decide its a nice sheltered space to over winter. I'd enjoy watching them emerge in the spring...

think they'll use it? There was part of a snake skin in there already, which is what made me think they might.

Last night while walking it went from 102 to 79 in about two minutes. I thought I was having a stroke or something. We have had 5, 100 plus days in the last two weeks. I am a musician and played a gig at a pool party last week and I could barley play my guitar as it would not slide up and down the next but rather just stuck. Lots of baby powder got me thru the night. Greendale is a suburb of Milwaukee and we just don't see these kinds of temps. I bet we have not had this many 100 plus days in the last 15 years before this week. Better than 20 below which we can see too.

Sorry about your finger ouch

Great swimming too. I used to to the Ironman so I have spent hours in the pool and know how much time and energy goes into improving that much.
