Believe it or not, I didn't feel a damn thing. The amounts of cayenne pepper I normally use burn a lot worse. I'm a little disappointed.
Still, this is a sauce they recommend you only add one drop at a time of, and I can understand why.

Went to a three and a half hour baseball scrimage today...I love baseball and watching my son play, but that was a long game! My son's team lost by one point. Oh well...he got some nice hits in. Then we went to a sports restaurant for dinner. The egg rolls are out in full force because it's St. Patty's Day. I am hoping that they got so drunk today they will be passed out by the time I go to bed tonight. They were all over town dressed up in costumes and totally smashed by 3pm. Spambot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spambot)
The post "thank you for being our voice!" is script generated by spambots everywhere. While there are certain protections in place to stop forum spambots, they will often make several human generated posts in an attempt to gain legitimacy for the forum account. Once certain post count restrictions are lifted, then they will usually make an attempt to post spam. Either to the forum, or their signature, etc.

Needless to say, I was in a bad mood from not sleeping.. but I stayed friendly. I was told I had to take Sucralfate for the rest of my life to control my stomach problems, and that they would do nothing about my hernia.. That I was told flips my stomach and gets all the food, liquid, etc. stuck in my esophagus. That made me even more angry.
When it came time to get home, my ride was late. I got even more angry. When my driver got out, I quickly put on a "happy" face and got in. I could tell we were both having a bad day while we were talking, so I stayed friendly and smiled a lot. After we pulled up into my driveway my driver said thank you, and that I brightened his day. It was a pretty nice feeling! I seem to have that effect on a lot of people, every time I see my therapist, the receptionist loves to talk to me because I'm always cheery (seeming) even if it's been a bad day.

As Steve said, "Boys will be boys". And it's a father's job to make sure his son knows how to get covered in mud and grass - I fully intend to do this whether we end up having boys or girls, if I just have a daughter I don't see why she shouldn't get to enjoy coming home covered in grass and mud and annoying her mother.

I have read a zillion articles that say that it has been proven that sugar does not make children hyperactive. I was a therapist and I worked with kids...I used to claim that crap myself. I didn't have a child then. Come to my house. Put my child in a room with nothing else to influence him. Heck...put him in a lab and eliminate all of the extraneous variables. Give him a candy bar. Wait ten minutes. Then tell me sugar does not affect his behavior. There are articles and then there is living proof. I would like the people who wrote the articles to have my son come to their house and eat some sugar and then they can reconsider their findings.
Fish oil huh? I would be willing to give that a try.
Mike...I am so sorry to hear about your cat. I hope he is okay. Keep us posted.

The articles have proper methodology and absence of eg. confirmation bias. What does "living proof" have?
EasternGirl
03-26-2012, 05:16 PM
I live with a child that I watch ingest sugar and then get hyper over and over again....now, you can call that confirmation bias if you want...but I have had my child come home from other people's houses hyper not understanding why, only to find out that he ate or drank something with sugar in it. I have also been trained in research and I know that unless I see the population used for a particular study, and I also see a list of the extraneous variables that were eliminated from the study, I am not convinced that a study is valid and reliable. Granted, many studies have been conducted on this particular subject...which would lead one to believe that the findings are in fact valid...however, if you show me twenty articles saying that research has been done to prove the sky is actually orange and not blue, and I walk outside tomorrow and see a blue sky, I don't really give a rat's anus what research is telling me..no matter how valid it is. I know my child. No amount of research can tell me I am wrong about what I know to be true about what I have experienced with him.

How can you justify that?
I know my child. No amount of research can tell me I am wrong about what I know to be true about what I have experienced with him.
Because it's entirely inconceivable that you don't know him (the finer details of his brain chemistry) as well as you think you do. Got it.
EasternGirl
03-27-2012, 05:54 AM
Stefan, I don't actually have to justify anything. I believe what I believe. You can argue with me about this forever but I am still going to believe what I am going to believe. It is entirely conceivable that I don't know the finer details of his brain chemistry, but it is also entirely conceivable that the research that they are doing on sugar will be proven wrong in ten years. Heck, in ten years, they will probably tell us that sugar causes cancer. It's also entirely conceivable that given that I am educated and trained as a psychologist and a researcher that I do know a little something about research and the fact that just because something has supposedly been scientifically proven doesn't mean that it is in fact true...especially when you are talking about the brain and things that cannot actually be measured physically. You cannot give someone a blood test and definitively measure levels of hyperactivity...it is in that sense, a subjective measure of a construct. You can measure physiological response to sugar intake...but that is not actually the same thing as measuring hyperactivity since hyperactivity is a psychological disorder. Psychological disorders can not be physically measured...they can only be subjectively measured by the person measuring them. Therefore, while one researcher may view a child who has ingested sugar to appear hyperactive, another researcher may view that child to appear "normal". There is bias on the researchers part as well. It also depends on what they are viewing as hyperactive. Like I said before, I would have to look at all aspects of a study before I deemed it valid and reliable. But again, if I think my child has a sensitivity to sugar, no study is going to make me believe otherwise. Now, I am willing to believe that my son could be sensitive to sugar for reasons other than sugar making children hyper...but, I am not willing to believe that it does not affect him if I see that it does. I also believe we are probably boring other members with this conversation at this point. ;)
Stefan-A
03-27-2012, 07:12 AM
Stefan, I don't actually have to justify anything.
You should still be able to justify it, even if there's no obligation.
You can argue with me about this forever but I am still going to believe what I am going to believe.
I have a problem with that mentality. Doesn't it matter to you whether what believe is actually true? It's not a matter of opinion, so "it's true for me" doesn't apply here.
it is also entirely conceivable that the research that they are doing on sugar will be proven wrong in ten years.
It's improbable and when the best available evidence points to sugar not causing hyperactivity, why stick with an idea that's basically unsupported and hoping that it will one day be shown to be true?
just because something has supposedly been scientifically proven doesn't mean that it is in fact true...
It's still far more likely to be true, than a wild guess based on a sample size of 1, where the researcher is biased and there is no methodology implemented at all.
especially when you are talking about the brain and things that cannot actually be measured physically.
Even if it is to some extent subjective, they do follow test procedures and produce replicable, predictable results. And as far as I can tell, several methods have been developed that do allow you to measure hyperactivity physically.
Therefore, while one researcher may view a child who has ingested sugar to appear hyperactive, another researcher may view that child to appear "normal".
Using what set of test procedures? The ADHD diagnosis wasn't been made purely subjectively, either.
There is bias on the researchers part as well. It also depends on what they are viewing as hyperactive.
Not really, that's what the procedures and controls are for, respectively.
But again, if I think my child has a sensitivity to sugar, no study is going to make me believe otherwise.
Noted, but definitely not respected.
I also believe we are probably boring other members with this conversation at this point. ;)
Probably, but the right way to end the conversation wouldn't be with closing statements, this issue should either resolved or the conversation terminated. Personally, I'd rather see it resolved, but if you want me to just drop it, just say the words. I'm not saying any of this in the capacity of a moderator.

I think a lot of it is also that sugary junk foods often contain other things that your son could be reacting to. Like, caffeine in coke, and chocolate.
For instance, I'm pretty sure most parents would say that kids would "react" to drinking a can of Coca-Cola. At the same time, they'd probably be a lot less hesitant to give their kids the same amount of Minute Maid 100% Orange Juice. But when you look at the Nutrition Facts, they contain almost the same amount of sugar!
EasternGirl
03-27-2012, 10:53 AM
I don't let my son have caffeine. Well, correction...I do not let him have caffeinated drinks...I do let him have chocolate. But I am talking about times when he eats sugary things without caffeine in them. Well, what exactly would resolve this issue for you Stefan? It sounds to me like the only way it is going to be resolved is for me to say that I believe that all of the studies are valid and reliable and that I am wrong about my son and that he is not reacting to sugar. I'm simply not going to say that because that is not what I believe. That is why I am saying that we can continue to argue about this but I am going to continue to believe that my son is affected by sugar...you may not respect that, but it is what I think. Now, I respect what you believe. But I am not going to say that I think you are correct...if that is what you want...because I do not think you are correct in this instance. Normally, I do agree with you with what you are saying about scientific evidence. I understand scientific methodology and I support empirical findings. I just don't think that these findings are holding true to what I have witnessed with my child concerning sugar. My justification of my reasoning lies in the fact that I simply have found no other explanation for my son becoming hyper other than the ingestion of sugar...I have done my own little "studies", so to speak...I have spent considerable time researching this, watching him, watching what he ingests, what he doesn't ingest. Do you think I haven't questioned that I could be wrong about this...when I myself previously held the belief that sugar did not affect children's behavior? Of course I have. But time and time again, I, and other members of my family, have seen my son become hyper after ingesting too much sugar. Therefore, I believe it affects his behavior.

One last thing I want to say...I don't think we are going to be able to resolve our differences on this subject. I am sure other members have other things they want to discuss and are probably getting tired of listening to this. Like I said, I stand by what I believe, and you can respect that or not. My justification of my reasoning lies in the fact that I simply have found no other explanation for my son becoming hyper other than the ingestion of sugar...
But it's not an explanation. Sugar needs to have that effect for it to be an explanation and there doesn't seem to be any evidence for it.

I have had it up to my ears with incompetent people. I got to my doctors office yesterday for my shots...and after I had left my health forms with them two weeks ago and told them numerous times that I absolutely had to pick them up yesterday so that I could take them to school today to turn them in...or I could be disqualified from the clinical component of my nursing program...I arrived at the office to find out that the forms had not been filled out. It was 4pm and the doctor had left for the day. I was livid. I was fit to be tied. Then they told me they couldn't fill out the forms unless I had a physical. I was about to strangle someone. Luckily, a nurse and a physician's assistant who understand how difficult it is to get into the nursing program I am in decided to help me out and the physician's assistant gave me a quick physical and filled out the forms for me. Now...with my arms aching all the way down to my hands from the shots I had to get in both arms...I have to drive out to my school and turn these forms in...sign some papers and pay to get my fingerprints done next week. It's almost over...well, until clinicals start anyway.

EasternGirl
04-01-2012, 03:59 PM
With a blood blister...if you drain the blood out it actually feels better after you do it..it reduces the pressure which reduces the pain. You don't have to jab it...just a tiny prick ought to do it...if you can stand it. If your toenail falls off, it will grow back...I lost one a couple of years ago.

04-01-2012, 04:12 PM
It'd take a long time to grow back I'm sure. I can't stand the feeling. Besides, my nail is so thick that the needle won't go in, so it's causing me a ton of pain in the first place. Even with a string around my toe while I do it, it's extremely painful. It's also stuck being bent which also makes it difficult. My foot is playing the "best" april fool's joke ever on me. Many dozens of foot long (literally 12 - 13 inches) ones all over the ground here in Dupont, WA even during the day. They must surface to avoid drowning. Except for yesterday, it's been raining for at least three solid weeks (when it isn't snowing) and there's no end to the rain coming anytime soon. Good for worms and frogs, bad for finding snakes. The back yard is a swamp, literally. Thousands of chorus frogs and northwestern salamanders are breeding in several inches of standing water right outside the back door. The only good thing about it is that I have a fridge stocked with plenty of worms, and a freezer full of frogs. Also, I caught a 22 pound Chinook salmon a couple of days ago (on the last day of the season for that river) with nothing but a yarn jig and 6 pound test line. The rivers are just choked with salmon right now. Plenty of snake food, just no snakes.

No. Chorus frogs and sallies are mine! I love them! And I have my 3 little chorus frogs, but I'd have 20 if I could feed them all! I go through 50 dollars of crickets every month, literally, just for my little froggums. Of course, pinheads like to munch on each other if you don't give them enough fruit and powdered food.

Ok so if there are
Thousands of them that means You get 1000 and I'll take the other 1000 and that should leave 1000 still there in Richards backyard breeding n happy for when the snakes come out :D
I saw Poison Dart frogs for sale the other day... OMG are they ever cute and beautiful and awesome and oh I wanted all of them!! They were all so bright, there were blue ones, red ones, yellow ones and orange ones! And I have an empty tank I have all sorts of stuff I could use for them. I even have Eco Earth substrate and mesh and clean gravel to layer properly to make a waterfall / splash / rain system with!!! Just would need the pump... However..... They were asking 100 bucks a frog.
...
......
I should have looked at the price before peering into the tank and making plans on this setup that is now implanted in my head and I still want to make it and everything... BUT NOOOOOO THEY HAD TO BE ASKING 100BUCKS FOR A FROG THAT COULD SIT ON A QUARTER COMFORTABLY!!!!!!!!
...
Stupid prices...
Stupid money I ain't got to spare....
So Again, I'll take at least a couple hundred Chorus Frogs and a clean hundred Northwestern Salamanders please and thank you.
Sincerely,
Scratching my pockets bottom.

I used to have this thing for poison dart frogs when I was little...I loved looking at pics of them and when I was older I got some rubber ones at the gift shop at the zoo and they sat on the dashboard of my car for years when I was a teenager. They are so pretty. I had no idea they were so expensive! I wouldn't mind having some too...but not for that price! What is a chorus frog? Post a pic.

LOL What I really meant to write in reply to this... before I got side tracked with frogs...
What I do for my Crickets is I have a 'Critter Keeper' that has just a little Eco Earth in the bottom, then have LOTS of egg cartons and toilet paper rolls with holes half cut in them, then fold the half cut circle inside... I'll post a picture in a minute to better portray what I mean. I can keep 50 crickets alive with out too many eating each other if they have lots of 'floor' space. (Really they are quite crammed in there but SHH don't tell them that)
Oh and I just feed finely crushed dog food, carrot peelings, lettuce bits. I use water gel for them or I mist the paper towel tube and the sides of the tank. It is kinda cute seeing them drink the water drops off the side.
... Wow I am long winded today ain't I?

That's okay, long winded posts are fun to read, when my dyslexia isn't making me see weird words.
I wanted to get a 5 gallon tank and make a fine mesh top, to breed them but they are evil. I haven't found any where I get my yarn... they usually have at least 3 5-20 gallon tanks for 10 ish dollars. I give them protein and calcium food, and fruit bits when I eat it. I also use water gel.

How would you like them? Boiled, fried, or frozen? Actually, the only hope of them arriving fresh, even if shipped overnight, is if they are shipped live in a blown up bag like crickets come in. If you don't freeze them alive, and keep them frozen until ready to serve, they rot and turn to goo in a matter of hours.

Yes, crickets have enormous appetites. That even goes for adult crickets. If they run out of food for just a few hours, they go all "Donner party" on each other but they don't bother to wait for the other crickets to die, they start munching on the crickets that are in the process of shedding and helpless. I always count crickets when I feed them to my herps, and count how many get eaten. Any left behind can do some serious damage as they munch on your lizard or amphibian. Jaws of steel.
Got a joke for you: "Two dyslexics walk into a bra..."
You see, it's all good. Even "normal" people know how it should read. My 8yr old niece read that line out loud but she said "dylexis" and "bar". Close enough.
Me too! I have duck feet...it's so hard to find heels and flats that fit properly!
Ditto. Narrow heel, too wide from there forward. Just like a duck. Must be from all those years of stomping around this god forsaken never ending 9 month rain storm that is the Pacific Northwest. Buying shoes is a PITA, or foot, however you want to look at it.

Richard... I am very offended by sith ydlsexia joke. How dare you. :D I also have read that joke many times... And most of the time I see the "bra" part as "bar" or "rab".
I'm good at anagrams, since most of the time I see things jumbled anyways, so I have learned to read things the way they're supposed to be. If I know the letter that is first, everything else just gets read as the non jumbled word.
I just use tweezers with my crickets. I occasionally shove the tweezers through them on accident, but I just stick it in front of the frogs and they grab it butt first and rip the heads off with their little fingers.

I'm pretty sure that the drenching rain and low temperatures (40's) day in and day out is keeping the snakes off of facebook. It's so wet that they would get electrocuted if they plugged in their little laptops. Not to worry, I'm sure they'll be out by sometime in July. Meanwhile back home in CA, it's sunny of course, and upper 70's.
OK now, this is just soooo frustrating!!! I've waited a month in the right location, to find puget sound garters but it's done nothing but rain the entire month. OK, so now I'm in Vancouver, WA (not the right location for pugets) until the 9th. Wouldn't you know it, the weather is going to be perfect for herping on SAT only, before the rain returns on sunday and monday. I won't be back at the Puget Sound until Monday. Son of a... grrrrr..
People here say "but that's why it's so green and beautiful" Well...I hate green! So what? it isn't worth it! Gimmie sunshine and drab brown.
I'm just so sick of rain I could scream. In fact, this is the wettest March on record since 1957 for SW WA. Chose a heck of a time to come back didn't I? If I wasn't holding out for good weather to get pugets, I would haul my self back to CA tonight. I've had enough!

That's interesting Kat. About 18 years ago as part of my degree course I did some work on malignant hypothermia, more specifically my tutor was trying to develop screening test for it. I'm not sure if your reaction was malignant hypothermia but the temp drop made me wonder. It's a reaction to halothane (one of the common anaesthetic gases) and 18 years ago it would kill 50% of patients that had it, hence the need for a screening test.
At that time the screening test was to cut a piece of muscle from just above the knee and drop it in a test tube of reagent, if there wasn't a reaction it was safe to proceed. There was genetic link, so the research was trying to identify the gene and develop markers for a blood test.
Takes me back....

Hi everyone...I'm finally home. You'll be relieved to know my roommate also left this morning (that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it...lol). She was Puerto Rican and she kept moaning "Dios Mio!" all night long...and "Aye yi yi!"(sp?)....until the nurses gave me headphones to keep from throwing things at her...lol. They always give me Spanish speaking roommates at the hospital since my married last name is Hispanic. At least I know how to say "shut up" in Spanish. Anyway...I always get severe nausea and vomiting from anesthesia. They give me medicine to prevent it and it usually works...but it didn't for some reason this time...plus I was so doped up from all the meds. Finally around 6pm last night they gave me a different nausea medicine and it worked. Dry heaving is not fun when you just had abdominal surgery and you have four incisions in your abdomen. I am still extremely sore and so sleepy. I'm going to go rest now. Thanks for all of the well wishes. Knowing you guys are here really helps get through all this! :)

The body on the beach that they cut open and the snakes crawled out? Yeah...it wasn't very convincing. Lol...Still, I always look at snakes anytime I see them now to see if they look like garters. Okay...so I'm going to vent now...my son had his first baseball game of the season tonight. He's on the Tigers. They played against the Mariners. When his team played against the Mariners in scrimmages, they beat them both times. But tonight, there was a different umpire and the Mariner's coach was making some really dirty calls...and the ump was siding with him on everything...and the Mariners beat our team 24-12. Just looking at that score you know something was funny...especially if we beat this team every other time we played against them. It was friggin' ridiculous and it makes me so angry because it is teaching the kids dirty game politics and poor sportsmanship. The poor boys were so upset...even the coach was upset. It was a crappy way to start the season. So I am in a crappy mood. And I realized that if you type Mariners wrong, you can accidently type Marniers....lol.

Good time for a lesson in 'life ain't always fair' and a 'be better then them and be honest' talk. Your little guys team beat them fair n square every other time, that is something to be proud of.

Yeah, I know. We talked a lot about it last night. My son is a smart kid...he knew what was up. Interestingly, he wasn't bummed about the fact that they didn't win...he was angry about how the other team's coach acted and how the umpire acted and that it was an unfair game. He had a run...and the other coach claimed that he didn't touch the home plate when he was crossing over home...which was so ridiculous because we all saw him from the stands...we could see that his feet touched the plate. The coaches fought and the ump sided with the other team...even though we were losing and had just gotten so excited about getting that run...and they took the run away. It was just ridiculous. They didn't need to take the run from us, they were beating the crap out of us anyway. Then, at the end of the game, when the other team was 12 runs up on us, they started stealing bases. It was like they were trying to rub our faces in it...it was so unbelievable. Our coach started yelling at the other coach...he was like "My God...you're beating us by 12 runs...you need to steal bases?". The other team just had no class. Our poor boys were so down and the other team was just...it was as if they were repeatedly kicking them when they were down on the ground. The parents were upset, the coaches were upset...and the other team is on the same league. But my son is very smart...he knows what they did was wrong and lacking in character. He's just upset that they got away with it...and so am I. I really think that the league should do something about it.

Can you complain about these guys to anyone running the league? Maybe if enough people did, something would happen. Either straighten up their act and let the kids enjoy the game or get removed from the league.

Or show up at the umpire's house holding a garter snake, and say, "Unless you want to find a whole bunch of these in your underwear drawer, you will call the game fairly."

Right now I'm waiting to hear...because I have a feeling the coaches probably didn't take the whole thing lying down. I want to see if they complained to the league. I'll know more after the next game on Saturday.

By the way, I did that once. During a particular week, it seemed that a local cult kept knocking on my door early in the morning. My thought: they had no concern to hear my own religious opinions, so I wasn't interested in hearing any more of theirs. So one day, I decided to answer the door holding Little Dude. One lady actually ran across the street to get away. The others actually stayed and asked me some questions about garters. But they haven't bothered me since.

At first, I couldn't make the connection. Why would they be asking you about garters in that situation?
Then I realized that Little Dude was a garter.

That's good. I am now going to start answering the door with big fat Cee Cee in my hand when solicitors come to bother me...Perhaps I will even be feeding her a pinky.

Watching Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. A very nice looking Wandering garter snake in a scene. Comes out of his sleeve when he's fighting on top of the train at the beginning of the movie.
Go Garter Snakes!
Yeah, I noticed that right away wheh the movie was fairly new. I was naming the snake species' as they appeared in the movie. Irritated the hell out of my parents. LoL.

Did anyone else notice that in the Indiana Jones movies, the images of R2D2 and C3P0 are in the hieroglyphics? In any of the movies, pay close attention to the scenes that show hieroglyphics. You'll see things that definitely don't belong there. If I remember correctly, it happens in the snake pit scene too.

Actually, in one of the Star Wars comics, Indiana Jones finds a crash-landed Millennium Falcon.

Pretty sure that my new neighbors "service dog" is a big fat lie! Dog stays home most of the time and likes to bark late at night. Doing some research to find out what exactly can be done. I think they fibbed so they could get cheap rent and not have to get rid of their dog. I'm really annoyed.

One of my boys likes to point out how a movie differs from the book. I have to keep shushing him, and then spend time afterwards hearing him out! He just turned 13, you think he'd understand artistic license?
P.S. The twins turned 13 yesterday! Yikes?

So are there any garters in the snake pit scene? My son talks through movies too...he argues with the people in the movie...he will get mad at the bad guy or something and say smart things to him, or point out things that are "dumb" or repeat things that are funny...I have to "shussh" him over and over. I love spending time with him but he is the worst person to watch a movie with if you actually want to hear the movie. That sucks about your neighbors, Kat...people really shouldn't lie about things like that.

Yes, there are garters (wandering) in the scene. That's what we were talking about originally.
You can lie all you want but service dogs get certified as such so it can be verified if anyone bothers to check. However, it doesn't take much to get a dog certified as a service dog. It's pretty easy, especially if you go with the "therapy dog" route.

Sorry to change the subject but I just got a letter from my school that said I have been officially accepted into the clinical component of the nursing program. I passed the final review...the reason I was doing all of the FBI checks, drug testing, blood tests, etc. So I will start clinicals next year.

That's better than Nurse Ratchett right? Lol... Kat, that's funny....You are forbidden to look at this thread! I told my son last night that I got accepted into clinicals...he told me that is "Swawesome!"....sweet and awesome. I told him it is good news and bad news. The bad news is...once I start clinicals, I won't be around much...the good news is, once I'm a nurse, we will finally have money. Of course he then goes on to talk about me buying pools and such....:D.
