Stefan-A
08-23-2007, 03:02 PM
I won't disappear, I'll just be forced to use the school's computers for 5 days a week. :D Hopefully I'll be able to move to one of the newer apartments when somebody there moves out.

It's a long story, but about 1/3 of the student apartments in the city are no longer available.

I'm sure the interest is there, Lee. As you can see from earlier in your thread, Stefan is getting some, and I would certainly be interested.

Stefan-A

Saw the white in front of the eye, thought I remembered that some racer had that. Looked it up in a book, noticed that the image I had in my head was that of a whipsnake so I decided to add it, but I also decided to add the ribbon just because this is a garter forum. Then I remembered that juvenile Coluber constrictors look a lot different than the adults but I couldn't be arsed to change it back.

Are you happy now? :D

Thankyou. The workings of a derranged mind are always fascinating to me!:)

Well, knowledge isn't the same as intelligence anyway. :D

Stefan-A

Lots of different ones. Some of the older ones don't even measure what we today would call intelligence and others require skills (math, reading) that make them unfair to people with different backgrounds and levels of education.

I think I've got to know a lot of you guys a whole lot better through our idle chit-chat than I would ever have achieved through more serious posts. It would be a shame if the forum was just a place to come if you had husbandry problems. I love it as a way to get to know you guys in a more general sense. Oh this is just great. I went to pick up the keys to my student apartment on Friday. Turned out that while my room is reasonably okay, the rest of the apartment (3 or 4 people share bathroom, kitchen and "livingroom") is a complete effing dump. I can't believe they're allowed to rent out the place as people should almost get paid to live there. As usual the price was a bit of an indicator, as I suspected, but I didn't expect it to be quite that bad. No pictures yet, but I'll be taking plenty of them next week.

The only good thing about it is the location. It's a bit outside of town, almost in the middle of a forest and it's about 100 meters to the shore. Plus, I've been told there are plenty of snakes there. :D

No internet connection and it's a complete s***hole. Yeah, it's time to start looking for an aparment on the free market and forget about these school-owned ghettos.

Sorry for swearing, but I'm a tad disappointed.

I'm too exhausted to start a new thread about anyting
but this is what we (Jeff's parents and I) did yesterday

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1259/1239156504_277c660caf_b.jpg (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1259/1239156504_277c660caf_b.jpg)

it's not anywhere near finished
so far it's only held up in the back and on the sides with metal brackets
I need to add some framing for the front
the space is 68" wide - just enough to put a 30G breeder and a 20G long next to each other, with only a virtual 1" to spare
it's gonna be very tight, which is why I had to anchor it to the wall, which is a mixture of plaster and lathe with unevenly spaced studs and - oh joy - sudden bits of brick and other masonry turning up in the most unexpected places
I still have to redo a couple of screws before going on to the next step

at the end of the day I realized that I didn't close the top on my indos' enclosure properly and one of the males got away
perhaps that's why my kings were so frisky yesterday
I sure hope he turns up

drache
08-26-2007, 04:56 AM
what's the likelyhood of someone breaking into our house and taking just the electric screwdriver?
nil - right?
so it's gotta turn up
I know I've used it here . . .
Jeff's dad brought his yesterday, but now I need mine and I've already looked everywhere it could possibly be (hoping I'd come across the snake too)
I am not happy with the current level of disorganization
I feel like my life has spun out of control and I'm just kinda hanging on
it's probably true too

drache
08-26-2007, 02:08 PM
found the screw driver by deductive reasoning
thought I lost another snake, but he turned up in the substrate (care fresh)
I am so burned out from this moving crap
I launched an attack on the ivy eating the garden shed
now I'm thinking I shouldn't have put it in the compost bin
but perhaps all the grape sludge will suffocate it
I did find some rather vigourous nightcrawlers, quite a difference from those tired worms from the bait shop
anybody here into gardening/plant ID?

Another site I read, which had much less info, stated that all parts of the plant are very poisonous. So I don't know what to think about that, except that perhaps you must eat it only in the spring, when the development is at a certain immature stage...

we're at a motel and I'm cranky because the garbage truck made a racket at 5:30 and then I couldn't go back to sleep
so I had to keep myself busy in the dark 'til Jeff and Khaili got up
I just went tto get some tea and it was awful!
people don't get tea - like that it's not just supposed to be brown water
they put water from the coffee machine into and un-heated styrofoam cup, put the lid on it and then put a tea bag on top of the lid .. . .?????
the only milk they had was reduced fat
I'm not going to dwell on this
I berated Jeff the first day of the trip for not having packed any tea supplies, but one just cannot properly complain about delegated tasks
next time I'll take care of everything myself again - it's the only way to make certain all my comfort needs are met

Quite a scary day today!!..........All this week I've been on a training course for planning and managing on-site heavy lifting; ie tower cranes.

Today I had to climb up one to learn how to carry out a standard safety inspection. There's just a vertical steel ladder up through the centre, and these guys are tall! And exposed! It was about 150 foot vertical climb!
http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//537/medium/crane_3.jpg

I took a photo looking down from the first 'rest stage'.

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//537/medium/crane_2.jpg

And another one looking up and out along the jib.

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//537/medium/crane_1.jpg

I didn't take any photos higher up because I was too scared to let go!!

I know I promised pictures of my own personal limbo, so here they come.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/thamnoph/photos/ekehome1.jpg

Left: The view you get when you come through the front door. The toilet/bathroom is the door on the left. Notice all the dead insects inside the lamp.
Right: The toilets. What you don't see is the shower to the right.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/thamnoph/photos/ekehome2.jpg

Left: The wonderfully clean toilet seat and the absolute abundance of toilet paper.
Right: A sort of drying room/corner. Those are floats and fish nets in those tubs.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/thamnoph/photos/ekehome3.jpg

The "kitchen" and the crap nobody had the energy to throw out. That is, before I moved in. Smells like That Yellow *******.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/thamnoph/photos/ekehome4.jpg

The "Living room".

http://koti.mbnet.fi/thamnoph/photos/ekehome5.jpg

The view from my window and Conan O'Brien's forehead.

Yeah, but I'm quickly getting used to it. It's not all bad, but it's not great either. What can I say, an apartment that size on the free market would cost maybe 3-4 times as much to rent.

Photos to follow in a new thread very soon!:D

I have no idea. The duller ones. :D Some of the sirtalis I've seen on the net have been real beauties, as have most atratus and a few ordinoides. There's one in Strumpfbandnattern that's bloody perfect. :D Page 157.

I am so lazy
I know I should work on switching that red-spot to rodents, but I managed to get Jeff to run an errand near the pet-shop, so he could stop by there as well and pick up minnows, which I know she'll eat
it's been a bit dry and worms are scarce too
the damn beast won't take trout pieces either
I am feeling very reluctant to get live mice, but I feel I ought to, just to see whether it's rodent or dead meat she objects to
well right now I wouldn't be up for getting live mice anyway, so minnows it is . . .

drache
09-03-2007, 04:30 PM
I ended up with all this unprinted newsprint wrapping paper the movers supplied as padding
whenever I get too burned out and numb-skulled to do anything more challenging, I shred the paper
the shredder hates the stuff
it's a bit soft and if I'm not careful, it clogs
the motor often sounds kind of tortured and I have to make certain I it feed that stuff in a particular way
it's a bit of a pain, but worth it, because it makes fantastic free baby bedding
I'd accumulated a whole bucket and the shredder full and came home today to find the whole lot sitting in a recycling bag on the sidewalk . . .
I was very good
I didn't screech or anything
he did sort it back out of the recycling for me
he is a very nice person

Feeding live mice is a real pain, we have a young burmese python that will only eat live, weve tried everything to convert him. Wet mouse, dry mouse, guts exposed, scenting, none of it works, and the shop we buy mice from is getting a bit suspicious. its so frustrating.

adamanteus
09-03-2007, 04:43 PM
I had the same thing with a young Burmese male, years ago. In the end I starved him for a full two months, after which he accepted pre-killed.....I think he would have accepted macaroni cheese by that time! Not at all relevant, but his name was Ramjamfull Prajapatti!!

ScimitarX
09-03-2007, 04:50 PM
we have tried not feeding him for a few weeks several times and still no interest, i think its the person who we got him from fault, he started him on live for his first meals.

Have you tried rolling a dead mouse across the floor in front of him?

ScimitarX
09-03-2007, 05:00 PM
yes, he doesnt even look at it, its even hard to get make him have by making him angry, he just moves away tongue flicking looking at other things, we know hes hungry though, he takes live instantly. We dont like to keep doing it but at this point at least its food, he hasnt grown much and is a bit on thin side so we just want to build him up a bit. We know other people who had burms of the same person and they all have similar problems.

I never did see mine eat, but I had it for long enough with no apparent weight loss that I am certain it must have

there's always heaps of paperwork

Snaky
09-06-2007, 02:49 PM
I'm an ict-consultant. I do the development and testing of the billing system of a big gsm operator... 9-10 hours is fine for me, I don't consider is over hours although I strictly only need to work 8 hours a day. But we're close to a delivery now, so today it were 12 hours, yesterday 14,5, the day before 13, ... And all testing of a program. It has to work flawlessly of course, it's for the billing system;) Days of > 12 hours are mindbreaking for me, I feel completely empty when I get home...

edit: enironment is Tru 64 Unix, C and korn-shell scripting for the programs, vi as programming environment... We're called "the matrix guys", because we all have little green screens and when we're compiling and linking, letters go down the screen very fast :D

I've been trying all week to resist the temptation to go get him and rip his heart out of his *******!

09-07-2007, 04:51 PM
Damn, that sucks. Although that is what you can expect after doing the right thing. I know I'd be very tempted not to hand him over the police (read between the lines).

I ended up with a set of teeth marks on my arm on wednesday. A drunk-ish guy tried to tackle me and somehow my forearm ended up in his face. Didn't notice the marks until today, hope he didn't have any diseases.

I hate this kind of low-life scum-bag, and I refuse to 'turn a blind eye' and let it pass. Maybe next time I'll accidentally damage him a little before I turn him in. Why should I be the one branded with any kind of title? He's the one who broke the rules, not me. He got caught and he should take his punishment like a man. The little sh1t!

There were two of them, but the second one got away.

I know who he is though. I think I'll smack him in the mouth so hard he'll need an enima to clean his teeth!

I know I would rough him up. Is this the first time this has happened in your neighborhood?

Stefan-A
09-07-2007, 05:11 PM
I meant teaching him a lesson without involving the police. An acquaintance of mine (more like a friend of a friend) caught some guy stealing the motor from his boat. Broke both his arms and sent him on his way. The same person also followed a guy home after he was given the finger in traffic, dared him to do it again and then proceeded to dislocate both his middle fingers.

Well, if they had any kind of honour, they wouldn't be doing things like that in the first place.

Gosh
and I thought Brooklyn is bad (reputation)
yet it seems that the worst I've had to deal with in ages, aren't thieves or burglars, but that damn preacher on the subway
I'd like to throttle him every time I see him - preferably crush his vocal chords
I believe all that free speech stuff is bunk, if I'm not free to leave
I understand that he is inspired by faith and that I'm a renegade heathen lost sheep and prime candidate for saving (not just me either)
but I've reported him, because I feel harassed
my subway rides are sacred
it's the only time I get totally to myself and I don't want to be jack-hammered with the love of Christ (that guy is loud and eloquent)
I'll see that I can get get pics next time (lighting's not good on the trains)
I wonder what he'll do when I start snapping away with my phone (haven't tried that one yet)

see - this is the trivial stuff, I get worked up about
haven't been mugged or burgled in a long while
Jeff got bonked over the head with a gun a few years back
but they ran when he yelled

two of my babies (well, my snake's, to be precise) left home today
they moved to Staten Island
I got to meet John, who breeds leopard geckos
he picked out the male and female who had just shed and looked stunning
I think he was surprised that I didn't hold these back
I do need to pick out my own now
several are going into shed and I'll make my choice
I've been too busy to pick up the camera
I apologize

drache
09-12-2007, 06:33 AM
you know
I don't even talk about snakes any more until I'm positive I can produce pictures within an hour at the most
sometimes I feel sorry for the unwary newcomer
I know I felt a bit harassed before I got the picture thing down
now I just know
take pics first, then post while they're loading
in the case of snakes bought - get the seller to email pictures, so you can post them before you ever get them

hey
I did get my new book and I will not post a picture
I am so stoked
it's
Snakes of the United States and Canada: Natural History and Care in Captivity
by Rossi & Rossi
too bad it's too heavy to carry on the subway
I would have taken it to work, but I have to run errands after

that guy has a professional lighting set-up that takes up more space than your student housing will allow for - and more funds than your average student budget as well
knowing you and your attention to detail, you could probably do at least as well, given the proper equipment

Thanks, but the equipment is just a part of the equation. :) It takes a lot of experience and training to be able to use it that efficiently. I could probably do as well, but it would take more than just the right equipment. ;)
