Talk of games reminds me, I'm waiting for the postman to knock on the door to deliver the latest, greatest instalment of Zelda for my Wii. All the reviews I've read so far have the game rated at, or close to, 100%. That's at least another 35 hours of free time I need to find over the next few weeks.

Yep, that's right folks. All the presents are bought and wrapped, some have even been given out (there are some folks I won't see before christmas so it had to be done, the rest of it I just wanted out the way). All cards are writen. Arrangements have been confirmed for Christmas day. All I need to do is put the decorations up and I'm done. I've even started (in conjunction with my best friend who is equally as organised... or complusive depending on your point of view) planning the new years eve get together and freezing the food that I can freeze for it.
People laugh at me but I see it this way, when everyone else is going nuts fighting the crowds, paying inflated christmas prices and queing for the majority of their adult lives, I will have my feet up with a book and a cup of coffee... who's the weirdo now ha????:D

I don't think you did do anything wrong I had the same thing happen to me. Ocassionally you get malware piggybacking on legitamate websites. There you'll be having a look at something that is perfectly fine (in my case it was images of garters) and unbeknownst to you something is lurking in the background that does weird stuff to your PC what you restart or turn it off. There is some great malware software out there. Chris managed to restore everything on my PC when it all went to hell in a handbasket. PM him with details he may be able to help.

Window 7 is actually a better architecture than XP, it's got more security designed in. It sounds like you picked up something nasty, Char's problem came from an advert on a Yahoo! Forum, legit site and legit advertising, but someone managed to slip a drive-by exploit into an ad. You didn't have to click on it. And then it took me around 8 hours to restore everything back to its pre-virus state. Lucky it was a new machine and a reinstall was easy.
If you aren't already running some AV I would install some asap - MS Security Essentials works well with Win7, other than that the free version of AVG has always been reliable for me.
I'd also advise ditching Internet Explorer as your default browser and using Chrome or Firefox instead (you may already have done this).

The telling you it was overheating was just the virus' way of getting the machine restarted to complete the malware installation. The ******* virus you got was particularly nasty and installed loads of other crap as well. And prevented me installing removal tools. :-(

Based on the Luddite movement of the 18th and 19th century. Luddites in the UK objected to farming and manufacturing improvements that led to labours and the working classes losing employment and ending up impoverished. This led to the rise in numbers of workhouses. I knew that A' Level in Social istory would come in handy one day!

I don't think any nationality is better than any other, just different. To be honest, most contries have been invaded and migrated into by so many others the boundries of nationality begin to fade. had a similar experience in my school back in the fifty's, for me and every other boy in the class, history was the most boring subject under the sun.
what those teacher's tried to do was get us to memorize which king or queen followed each other and the relevant dates that went with each monarch, mind numbingly tedious tudur's Plantagenet's etc etc, all they had to do was tell my all boys class about the battles, the war's, the intrigues, and we would have been in seventh heaven, it would have been so easy for them as regards subject matter, no other country's history comes close, not even the Romans, this tiny island has spent its entire history either resisting invasion [not always successfully ] or attempting to invade some where else [with similar results] had the dumbos who passed themselves off as teacher's taken this route no doubt my self and my class mates would today be all history professor's. :D
please don't think that i am in any way putting the British historic war like tendency as good, just that it would certainly have got the attention of any group of boys and held it,......... sorry girls i don't have a clue just how they should have sold history to you

Ironically, in my GCSE Humanities (combined history and geography, with the GCSE being the school exam that kids here sit at 16, and which I hasten to add have got a lot easier since I was at school, afterall... in my year group there were 2 pupils who got straight A-grades across 10 subjects, nowdays they've introduced an A* because too many get A grades and need something more to distinguish at the top, and it isn't unusual to have dozens of kids in a school getting straight A*... you're not telling me kids today are birghter or the teaching is better, I know some kids and I know some teachers ;) but I digress).
So, ironically, in my GCSE Humanities I spent 4 weeks doing a project on the Vietnam War. Not really part of our British history, but interesting all the same, and it was a subject I chose. I'd already read about our civil war, both World Wars, Wars of the Roses, defeating the Spanish Armada, Romans, Vikings... Lots of wars, mostly stuff I read because I liked reading about it.

Having such diverse ethinicity in my blood, I find a lot of history very interesting/important.
My ancestory includes Native American, Scottish, Estonian, British and German bloodlines.
During WW2 my grandfather (dad's side) met my Grandmother (Estonian) while liberating a Nazi camp, My great uncle & Aunt (Grandma's sister, Mom's side) were stationed at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked.
At the same time, My grandfather on mom's side was hard at work casting steel at Ingersol Rand for the war effort, he may not have been on the front lines, but those steel castings were.
He was also involved in the early days of the Wankel angine, again at Ingersol Rand.
I cannot watch any WW2 documentarries without feeling emotional over it.

other than that the free version of AVG has always been reliable for me.
AVG, paid or free version is rubbish. About 80 percent of the clients that were bringing in infected computers to the PC shop where I worked, were running AVG free and it was up to date. Still wouldn't detect the viruses they had. The worst case I saw had about 180 infected files and several dozen different viruses. AVG is crap. McAfee is next worse right behind AVG.

I just find that even with memory hogging programs open, multiple apps/browser tabs open, etc, that I still rarely have more than 2-3 gigs of ram in use at any given time. The main thing I don't like about 64 bit is that there are a lot of apps I use that will never be updated to work under 64 bit since development of those apps has stopped and there's nothing new to replace them.

One of the arguments for doing it is "Garter snakes serve as one of the few non-mammalian (and only reptilian) model species for studies of behavior development. Examining aggressive displays and feeding preferences, researchers have shown consistent individual personalities"
Well heck, as garter fans, we've known that all along. We don't need no stinking research to tell us that, now do we?:p

Or, you can pay less money and buy an external hard drive, back up all that you need and have it in case of computer crashes. Honestly, the geek squad people know nothing. Those ***hats made me spend almost $1000 in hard drive replacements (that is 70-150 per hard drive) and then they say " oh, sorry it just so happens we made a mistake and it was your recovery disks that were bad.... give us $75 and we'll fix it all! No... we wont refund you for our stupid mistakes!"
chris-uk
11-27-2011, 04:17 PM
$1000 in replacement HDDs? How many mistakes did they make? Alternatively, just take your old drive out of the old PC and plug it into a spare cable on the new machine. Then you have everything without having to buy an external drive.

Yeah, you're right. Doesn't rain as much as people think. It rains much more than most people think it does. Besides that, it's not so much the amount of annual rainfall that is so disturbing. It's the number of days per year with measurable rain that makes it so miserable. Sometimes nearly 300 days a year. Whether it's snow or rain in the winter is sometimes just a matter of elevation. Could be raining where you are but if you climb 1000 feet, it's snow. On the Olympic Peninsula, annual rainfall is measured in feet. Some years up to 12 feet a year. It's the wettest place in North America. The Portland/Vancouver metro area gets around 26-32 inches a year usually. That's still a lot of rain. I don't miss it one bit. Where I am now gets around 6-8 inches a year. I can live with that. Over 300 sunny days per year. Today, sunny 72 F.:)

It was a pretty town...people were a little uptight though...I preferred London and the Northerners...met some people from Wales who were very cool. I got so addicted to Eastenders and Neighbors that I used to watch Eastenders on BBC for years when I got back here...now they don't show it on BBC where I am and I found out that you can't get it on DVD....major major disappointment! All this talk of the UK has me sitting here in drifting down memory lane......
In 1991 I was lucky to be on one of the first few flights into Stansted when the new Terminal opened. The building is nothing short of magnificent.
Just now I read about the public sector strike, Not good for people with passports trying to get cleared to leave the airport.
Anyways, We boarded a bus for Victoria station, transfered to another for the journey up to Liverpool. Our original flight was to land in Manchester, But I forgot to bring the passports!! so we had to make do, A nice travel agent in Toronto got us on a tourist charter to London for $75 a seat, so it was the only option.
In retrospect, I am glad it happened that way, otherwise I never would have been inside the awesome (Architecturally) Stansted terminal at all.

Already did a week ago when I heard the first gentle knocks. Two copies, in fact.
It's a Samsung. 36 month warranty, lasted 45.
On a stupid note, I paid way too much for its future replacement. I could have gotten a 2 TB external drive for the same price as this 320 GB.
infernalis
11-30-2011, 04:54 AM
The market on those things is strange. Last year Wal Mart had a "black Friday" special on 500gb external drives for $40 each, I picked up two. Both are filled already, Mostly TV shows and movies.

Actually, I take that back. The price of this particular model in several other stores seems to be pretty much exactly what I paid half an hour ago. They said the price of hard drives had tripled and blamed it on the floods in Thailand. Which seems plausible.
Still, I wonder if I couldn't have gotten a good enough 2 TB drive by buying an external drive and cannibalizing it. It certainly worked once before, a few years ago.

Marnie what made you choose the southern end of England to live in? you really should have come up north where the men are men and the women are grateful, should your wish be fulfilled i expect you to visit England's premiere city LIVERPOOL where you will be treated to a Beatles tour and the presidential suite at the Radison hotel oops i just checked and they tell me its booked that week sorry, but you still get the Beatles tour.
as for eastenders what a dour depressing dollop of debilitating dogsbol$Łks, not a happy storyline in it's twenty odd year history.
update have just checked the Liverpool branch of the red light motel [special rates for working girls and pushers] and they have vacancies, told them i would check back with you before booking ,let me know
John...you are so hysterical...I don't think I can get that special rate...as I have been retired as a working girl for many years now...just can't work it as well as I used to...lol...
Can any of my friends in the UK get me a VHS or DVD of some of the seasons of Eastenders if I send some money for shipping? Do any of you have any of the episodes on VHS or DVD...since you can't buy it?

I'm sure we could (I've not watched Eastenders for 20 years), the question is why you'd want them when you've escaped from that drivel for so long. VHS would be a problem, not had one of those plugged in for 7 years. Could burn a DVD if I could get the episodes on a PC. An alternative would be to setup some sort of proxy so you could watch them on the BBC's iPlayer (it only streams to IP addresses in the UK). And Eastenders doesn't have seasons, it's a soap opera so it's on 2-3 times a week, every week, with extra episodes for Christmas Day etc.

I love the Eastenders...It's the little bit of the U.K. I get to have here...I watched it when I lived there and then they showed it here on channel 12 for a couple of years..so I watched it for years and then all of the sudden I couldn't watch it anymore. I tried to download a couple of programs to my computer so that I could watch it through the BBC but it didn't work...I don't know if that is the same as what you are talking about with the iPlayer...but if you could walk me through how to do something like that...I'm pretty computer stupid...otherwise..if you could burn a DVD with some episodes...I would be eternally grateful...my mom used to watch it with me and she would get a kick out of seeing a few episodes too!
Put the Christmas tree up tonight and I swear Cee Cee and Selena are staring at it...they have been staring at the lights since we put it up!

Sorry Marnie i almost forgot your request if you can't get together with Chris and his technology, then i have an old VHS recorder and lots of tapes so one way or another we will get you some episodes of this vile show, they would have to be the stuff that's broadcast now because as Chris said they don,t make this like a series that you can buy later, i will speak to Chris to find out the best way to serve your eastenders FIX............bloody junky:p

my eldest son is a huge fan of this series and could i am sure quote verbatim whole episodes
while baldric's stupidity is hilarious i think the clever part is rowan Atkinson's ability to continually use sarcasm and manage to keep it funny
people who in real life use sarcasm to any great degree soon lose any friend they might have, and too much of it on tv doesn't come across any better, but rowan managers to pull it off with little effort

And an American who, despite the Eastenders fixation, does have a redeeming feature. Char and I watch House every week. I'm disappointed that Cuddy isn't in it now, there was a great dynamic between her and House, Foreman just doesn't cut it. I think Hugh does a great job passing as an American actor, a great contrast to his Blackadder and Jeeves and Wooster days.

I never watched it until season 2 was already over. So, what I did was, I went to phazeddl com and downloaded all the seasons. The series was slow at first and I almost quit watching it. But by Season 1, episode 4 I was hooked. And it just keeps getting better too. It's one of those rare shows where you love the bad guys (the meth cooks) and you're rooting for them, but at the same time, you don't hate the good guys (the law). It's quite an intense drama.
