have just got back from holiday feel wiped out and i'm off to bed, i was going to leave it until tomorrow before commenting on the ,Richard trial proceedings, as after a very brief look for the comments which have upset people i could not find them, i will hopefully put that right tomorrow, just wanted to say that considering banning someone is not a step that should be taken lightly, and my view on Richard is that yes he is often contentious and occasionally blunt in his contributions but for my part i have always considered him as one of the senior members of Thamnophis.com i don't mean senior in age or the time he has been a member, but senior in the sense of contribution, the willingness not just to answer the many queries that continually come up but his tenacity in answering them, replying time and again until he has gotten over the information needed.
he may be somewhat blunt in manner but there can't be too many members who are more dedicated to thamnophis.com

I have 3 chorus frogs now... Frogger, Big Legs(my boyfriend named him) and Flinch (my friend named him)
Frogger and big legs have been eating lots of flies, and I even got Big Legs to eat some cut up night crawler. :D Big legs eats probably 10 baby flies a day.

Thank you PINJOHN, and thanks to everyone who PM'd me with words of support. I know my methods, ways, and sometimes my words are not exactly popular but there are a few people who truly understand me and what I'm really trying to do here.

It's not all one way and everyone against me you know. Many of you don't know that because these people tend to stay rather quiet on the forum, or say their words of agreement in private. Some people see what I'm trying to do and I do stick my neck out and "ask for it" in the process. They're just not willing to do the same and I can't blame them for that. They can see what the result is so I can't blame them one bit.

When the rains start up again and you can tiny earthworms, your frogs will thrive on them Chantel. They're like pinkies are to snakes. Flies are just "worms" to them, but actual worms really fatten them up and make them grow.

kibakiba
07-18-2011, 04:23 PM
Yeah, we don't have many small earthworms here when it rains. But, frogger had eaten before I offered the worms. Right now, I have about 100 flies, so until we find some "mini's", they'll be eating those.

They have a natural planted enclosure, so it would be nice to get some earth worms to be in there... But Big Legs would probably eat them all up... ;) He'd eat until he exploded.

ConcinusMan
07-18-2011, 04:30 PM
I found it much easier to maintain their enclosure and keep it clean (mold and stink-free) by just keeping it bare with about a half inch of clean water in the bottom, and some house plant cuttings in the water. Then I could change the water when it gets nasty. They spent most of their time up on the side, or in the plants anyway.

A planted terrarium with potting soil and just a large water dish is fine but after a while, you'll start to have bacteria/mold problems and will stink. You definitely don't want to add worms to that mix because if just one of them dies... well, you know.

These frogs wont dig for worms. But they will snatch them up if they see them wiggling in clear water.

kibakiba
07-18-2011, 04:35 PM
I haven't had any problems so far. They seem to enjoy digging, and all the care sheets said to keep some sort of diggable substrate in there with them. I find them in a little shallow "nest" together at night. It's quite cute.

ConcinusMan
07-18-2011, 04:41 PM
They seem to enjoy digging

That behavior is usually done in a land setting, as a survival tactic when the humidity is low enough (evaporation rate is high) that their skin can't stay moist enough. Digging in helps them keep from drying out. Nothing wrong with that, I'm just saying they're highly adaptable and have different behaviors and tactics that really depend on the conditions. They're perfectly happy with not digging too, if there is water under them and high humidity, they don't feel the need to dig.

My enclosure had very high humidity. I mean, it would sweat on the inside sometimes. Under those conditions, they don't need to dig, and spend all their time sitting up in the plants or on the side. Then I just drop little worms in the water at the bottom and watch them go crazy eating them.:D They'll actually scoop them out of the water and into their mouths using their "hands".

All their little poopies drop into the water, making it easy to keep it sanitary with simple water changes.

kibakiba
07-18-2011, 04:51 PM
I keep they're container very humid, enough to keep it sweating, but also dry enough that there isn't mold growing. They dig even when it's very damp in there. It doesn't seem to be the fact that it's too dry. I know when there isn't enough humidity when they sit in the water for more than 5 minutes, because if I mist, they're out and about.
They eat the flies off my hand, I put a few in my palm and they climb on to my and grab them. It's pretty cute.

They also like to leave their logs of poop on the side of the enclosure, so it's easy for me to clean up.

It's official. We don't get a summer again this year. It's been 361 days since the last time we got to 90 degrees. We're only going to be upper 60's to upper 70's for the next week or two. Still doesn't feel much like summer at all.

It's in the 80s right now. I feel bad for my little chorus frogs. I keep my fan on with a cloth that's been dampened and sat in the freezer for an hour. Cools the place down fast :D

Yeah, they don't do so well above 75 or so and are most comfortable in the 60's. Maybe that's why they're digging. Looking for a cool place underground or a place away from the air movement. That's the evaporation rate thing I was talking about. That's whats making your fan cool things down - increases evaporation rate. For amphibians, that's a problem. They can't cool down in that fashion because high evaporation is undesirable for obvious reasons - they need to stay moist. If they head underground into a burrow that takes care of the heat, and they won't dry out.

All the little froggies outside would head into a rodent burrow a foot or two underground, or deep inside/under a moist log where it's much cooler.

Remember how I said my setup for them was? If it got too warm I would just put a couple of ice cubes in the water at the bottom to keep the water cool. They definitely took advantage of it when the room was too warm.

They're pretty tough though. I've found them up in trees/bushes when it was just brutal outside. 90's, very dry, and no water to be found anywhere. Try putting a wet rag into the freezer until it's nearly stiff. Then put it in their enclosure loosely so it's easy for them to get into the folds. Might help them out a bit. They might get under or near it to cool off.

kibakiba
07-18-2011, 09:51 PM
I keep a damp cloth in front of my fan. It raises the humidity. Yesterday my room was probably at 70% humidity. I fell asleep on my desk, and because of that, I didn't get to turn my fan off when I needed to. The wet cloth over the fan cooled my room down fast.

I tried that. Your "BS alarm went off". I was honest with you.
Try harder.

It boils down to one statement which set Scott off and then everyone else and I told you why I made that statement but you didn't accept my reason. Was it really all that bad? Did it really warrant all of this drama?
It was an insult, not "just one statement".

This isn't drama. This is business.

I can't say anything that's even slightly provocative even if I'm not trying to provoke drama and hostility.
I believe you can't say anything that isn't provocative.

I'm the guy that everyone likes to say "oh no, he didn't just say that. Let's get upset about it" to. Like said, nobody seems to like a person who makes them see things in themselves, that they do not like.
You know what you need? A big wooden cross, so that every time you feel unappreciated for your sacrifices, you can climb on up and nail yourself to it.

ConcinusMan
07-19-2011, 11:55 AM
I don't feel unappreciated. There are those that get it, understand why do what I do, and they do appreciate it. And then there are the rest of you. Those of you that don't get it, grab your pitchforks and form a posse. Those that do get it, tell me so in private. Can't blame them for that since there is an angry mob on the loose.

There is no "try harder". You get it or you don't. Trying harder won't make any difference if it falls on deaf ears and a closed mind. All you see is an insult. There's much more to it than that. Sometimes you have to gauge a person's reaction to see what level they are on intellectually. The response I got made it all too clear and gave me the answer I seek. You get that, or you don't. There is no in-between.

And you refuse to see it.

Sometimes you have to gauge a person's reaction to see what level they are on intellectually. The response I got made it all too clear and gave me the answer I seek.
Have you ever considered, that if you behave like an idiot, you're going to be treated like one? That's not a reflection of the other person's intellect, but of your own.

You get that, or you don't. There is no in-between.
There's plenty of in-between and it's your responsibility to get the other person to get you, or you're going to have to admit that you failed. If you try to communicate and you can't make yourself understood, that IS your failure. The other person is not a mind reader and you know that.

ConcinusMan
07-19-2011, 12:36 PM
And you refuse to see it.

I see that someone chose to be insulted by what I said. You've said quite a few things to me that could be taken as an insult, and yet I am not insulted. I find that if a person is insulted by what I said, it is usually because it is true, the person knows it's true, and doesn't like that aspect of himself.

Have you ever considered, that if you behave like an idiot, you're going to be treated like one?

Yes, I have. I will be treated like an idiot by an idiot. Non-idiots will respond differently to idiotic behavior, if that is what they perceive it to be. Again, this comes down to what I was saying about gauging a persons reaction to see where they are intellectually.

That's not a reflection of the other person's intellect, but of your own.

Oh, but it is a reflection of their intellect. It is not what happens to me (or what is said to me) that determines my mental health or intellect. It is how I choose to react that is the determining factor. That goes for any human being.

Let's get some perspective:

Say you're in a car crash. Everyone's OK, but one of the people involved flies off the handle and becomes violent or distraught while others remain calm and do what needs to be done. Which of those two types of people would you say is the more intelligent of the two? Which one is rational and which one isn't?

Stefan-A
07-19-2011, 01:03 PM
I see that someone chose to be insulted by what I said.
You either set out to insult them, you didn't care if you insulted them or you failed trying to avoid insulting them. So which is it? Malice, indifference or incompetence?

I find that if a person is insulted by what I said, it is usually because it is true, the person knows it's true, and doesn't like that aspect of himself.Yeah, because people never get insulted when people say things that are untrue.

Yes, I have. I will be treated like an idiot by an idiot.By someone who may or may not be one, for either being or acting like one. Either way, you deserve it.

Non-idiots will respond differently to idiotic behavior, if that is what they perceive it to be. No, idiots and non-idiots will respond to idiotic behavior however they happen to see fit.

Oh, but it is a reflection of their intellect. No, it really isn't.

Another thing you're not getting, is that you don't get to claim the high ground after being treated like an idiot for acting like one.

Say you're in a car crash. Everyone's OK, but one of the people involved flies off the handle and becomes violent or distraught while others remain calm and do what needs to be done. Which of those two types of people would you say is the more intelligent of the two? Which one is rational and which one isn't?That's actually impossible to tell. Those are extraordinary circumstances, there's an emotional impact, shock, possibly pain, presumably a sudden release of hormones, triggered stress responses and a thousand other factors that are far more important when analyzing the behavior, than intelligence. In fact, the one thing that doesn't matter all that much in that situation, is intelligence.

And intelligence doesn't equal rationality.

Stefan-A is a moderator, and he already did move the discussion to be continued "elsewhere" and that "elsewhere" was right here because it didn't belong in "the main thread" it started in.

Please, do realize that this is the place for off-topic discussion that doesn't belong in other, already established threads or categories.

Maybe, just maybe, the "masses" will find your post more engaging and respond. Whenever that happens here, I am always very willing to yield the thread to others who want to use it.

It is not at all rude or inappropriate to post just about anything here at any time, even if it seems like you're interrupting. That's the beauty of this thread and I invite you to take advantage of it anytime it suits you.

The wheel bearings in my Toyota took a dump, it needs struts too, so a friend loaned me his extra pickup, then he just offered it to me for a grand, so I said sure.

Now I can take my time and fix up my RAV 4 right.

The pickup is a gas hog, so I will use it for fetching lumber, picking up things (try fitting a large viv in a SUV, it does not work.), gathering firewood, hauling back and forth to camp, hauling stone and sand.. stuff like that.

It has 4w Low and 4w High and a cat2 hitch, my SUV has computerized traction control and a plastic rear bumper, so even though both vehicles have 4 wheel drive, the truck is heavy duty, the SUV is comfortable and safe.

so it all fits perfectly, Plus the truck is automatic, Dorothy cannot drive my Toyota, it has a manual transmission.

Richard, I love your passion and appreciate your knowledge and experience, but I have to say, if so many people are having a hard time understanding where you are coming from and are taking things in ways in which you didn't intend, there is likely a problem in the way it's presented. Please don't get defensive. It's really not worth the rise in blood pressure for either of us, just reflect a bit, perhaps re-read how you've phrased things and see if there's room for improvement. For example, sarcasm is tough to read on a forum and I tend to be quite sarcastic in real life, so I know that's something I need to work on when replying to a forum. We've all gotten too heated in forum discussions, but I finally realized that it's just not worth it. I read everything and draw my own conclusions. I could care less whether anyone agrees with me or even reads my opinions. It's difficult, but try not to take these things personally. It's our love for these animals that makes us each passionate about them. It's sometimes better to just acknowledge that others are equally passionate and simply agree to disagree, without the further bickering, as they feel just as strongly about their point of view as you do yours. Anyway, as far as I can see no one is out to get anyone else, things just got a little too heated. No biggie, but probably time to move on?

TNT is actually very stable and widely used. In fact, you can toss a pound of it on a fire and it will just burn. Or you can hit it with a hammer all day and nothing will happen to it. That's why the military uses it in artillery shells etc. It needs a detonator to actually explode.

It's the older product, dynamite, that's unstable.

Actually, I thought TNT was replaced for faster more effective mixtures.?

As for the detonator part, if I recall correctly doesn't it need to a high order detonator as well, meaning that even black powder is too slow to initiate a reaction?

Can't comment on the latter part, but generally speaking, the answer to the first question is yes and no. TNT is still the #1 explosive used in bombs and artillery shells and is probably the most common ingredient in other explosives as well.

See now were making sense. I never looked into the military aspects, I was more interested in mining and demolition uses.

I was somehow misinformed that RDX was used more widely.

I know that the gravel quarries in this area still use it. However, when they drill the holes to place the explosive in, they add anhydrous ammonia to the hole. Apparently, that increases the explosive force of TNT for a better yield.

I found this out when an article in the paper reported several large thefts of anhydrous ammonia from the quarries. (presumably for meth production) I thought, what the heck do they need ammonia for at a quarry? And this is what I found out.

That's PC for you. Instead of one word that has worked just fine for a very long time, lets use two and make it awkward to say, and tiresome to read and write. It's getting quite ridiculous. They even have us putting nouns before adjectives in in a sentence just to make a sentence "PC".

Dear amheadhunter,

May I ask how exactly you came to have these skins?

Considering decomposition begins very quickly, I have to ask if you are killing live garter snakes to obtain these skins??

Strange how ebay forbids the sale of animals unless you murder them first.

and by the way, decapitation of snakes is extremely inhumane, the head and brain survive for a very long time due to the extremely low oxygen requirements of a reptile brain.

It's been a very hot day so tonight I decided to go get some ice cream. As a drove to Dairy Queen I noticed I had a hitchhiker with me.
A large Orb-Weaver spider had built a web from the passenger side mirror to the radio antenna. It sat in the middle of the web while I drove, 30mph.
It survived the whole trip(3 miles).
Orb-Weavers are one of my favorite spiders. The would estimate there are 30 living and building nightly webs in my back yard.
A very large one builds a web every night over the rear patio sliding door but never anchors to the door itself. Only the frame.
I can let the dogs out in the middle of the night and my buddy isn't bothered.
We don't kill spider around or in my house.
Sometimes they get relocated to the outdoors or a spare basement room if they are in the way.

If you put an "indoors" spider outside, you're pretty much killing it. They live in houses for a reason.

We stopped killing jumping spiders that wander into our house, because they kill those weird beetles I was talking about a few pages back. We kill the giant house spiders, though, because I'm highly allergic to them, and they tend to be found in my bedroom and around my bed. I don't want to be sent to the emergency room because of a stupid spider.

We adopted a spider outside of our apartment last summer. She was missing a leg so we called her "seven". She was so much fun to watch build her web and eat the various insects we tossed in. We don't kill spiders either. They are so fascinating.

You wouldn't find our infestation of aggressive giant house spiders very fascinating!
I have arachnophobia, so I am scared of them... But it's hard to conquer my fear when these spiders will actually chase you and literally jump at you! I can pick up and tolerate the little black and white jumping spiders, but anything bigger, and I start panicking. Jumping spiders are funny... You can pick them up and look at them, and they just keep doing their threat display at you, lifting their front legs up. They act so tough it's funny.

I would love to own a farm, and have horses, cows, sheep and chickens.... But really, unless my business went huge, it wouldn't happen. The most I'd have is maybe a field with soya beans, for my soya milk products, and goats, for my goat milk products. Maybe hire a beekeeper for honey products :D

Here is what I do besides snakes, SKATES :D

Here is me 17 years ago
http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/285433_10150333683654359_525334358_9576525_1595910 _n.jpg

When the roller rink closed when I was 24 I pretty much remained undefeated, besides being 6'4'' on skates I still managed to roll under a 15 or 16 inch bar not by doing splits, by a move called the sleeper.

You can buy a brand new small car with this equipment
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/37179_484815904358_525334358_6872377_614320_n.jpg

When I was 14 I wanted to see just how fast I could push my skates, It was a thrill breaking past the 40kph barrier, even more incredible after breaking 50kph, I finally topped out 3 years ago at 58.1 kph on Grant Park High school track using a 100meter split time which was 6.2 seconds. Was never good at long distance skating though.

http://a4.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v313/184/105/525334358/n525334358_1275053_7834.jpg

Was always a sprinter on my skates 300m time was 25.32 and 500m was 42.16... not bad from when I first started out and the times were 33 and 56
But I had a falling out with the skating team when they decided to take out every race that was under 10km because only 2 people were sprinters and all the others are long distance. I cried and felt like useless talent because I could no longer qualify for nationals, still bugs me to this day.

2006, one of my best marathon races in the rain!. Started in the Advanced B wave (was supposed to be in A) Right fron the start on soaking wet roads, I wasn't afraid of slipping and I had a double push with a long glide, I passed nearly everyone in the A wave that started 2 minutes ahead

2008 Same race I got a personal best marathon time of 1:14
3rd overall, first in my age category. The finish was so close that I didn't know I won until they posted the results on the big screen (listen closely, you will hear the time difference, .01), you can see my reaction here :) Super excited Matty

I found that baby night crawler in my container of night crawlers, along with an egg sac (I think). It was an inch long and about the size of a small pencil graphite stick... Thing. It was the tiniest worm I have ever seen! I usually find baby worms a few weeks after they come out of the egg, when they're 2-3 inches long. It was really cool knowing my worms ware breeding. Too bad they all got eaten up today.

katach

We want to make our 5gal tank into a worm bin. Buy a couple dozen nightcrawlers and get some really good chemical free soil and breed our own. Lots cheaper that way!

kibakiba
08-05-2011, 11:17 PM
It is. What's unfortunate, though, is they don't breed often. I'd get a baby or two every few weeks when I was actually try to breed them. I did end up with about 60-70 worms though. They all died after my mom "watered" the worms, though. Keep the soil only slightly damp, do not make it wet.

My mom and I were arguing about my next snake.. (probably next year due to money issues and pc issues) I wanted to save up for either a worm snake, or a snow. Two of the snakes my mom hates the most. She hates anything that looks weird, or unlike "normal" snakes that you see in the pet trade, like corn snakes (non-albino/snow), ball pythons and garter snakes. When I showed her a picture of a snow t. radix she freaked out and said it was a tape worm. Then I showed her a picture of a worm snakes... She said it was a wiggling piece of poop. There is just no pleasing her.. Haha.

I don't actually want a worm snake, I just wanted to mess around with her a bit ;) Definitely want a snow or a rosy boa, though!

An old country preacher......had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young Men his age, the boy didn't really know what he wanted to do, and he didn't seem too concerned about it. One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy's room and placed on his study table four objects-

1. A Bible.....

2. A silver dollar.....

3. A bottle of whisky......

4. And a Playboy magazine.....

'I'll just hide behind the door,' the old preacher said to himself. 'When he comes home from school today, I'll see which object he picks up.

If it's the Bible, he's going to be a preacher like me, and what a

blessing that would be!

If he picks up the dollar, he's going to be a business man, and that would be okay, too.

But if he picks up the bottle, he's going to be a no-good drunken bum, and Lord, what a shame that would be.

And worst of all if he picks up that magazine he's going to be a
skirt-chasing womanizer.'

The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son's foot-steps as he entered the house whistling and headed for his room.

The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the objects on the table..

With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them. Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the silver dollar and dropped into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle and took a big drink, while he admired this month's centerfold.

'Lord have mercy,' the old preacher disgustedly whispered.

'He's gonna run for Congress.'

My friend Kris is a Lutheran pastor, and used to be in the Memphis area. I once accompanied him to pay a visit to a couple he was counseling for marriage. As it turns out, their house was haunted, and Kris performed an exorcism (Basically, a Rite of Home Dedication, but with parts of the Baptismal liturgy interspersed and emphasized). I did see some strange inexplicable things, (doors opening and closing by themselves, and tiny clawmarks appearing on the girl's back). Looking back, I probably should have been afraid, but oddly, I felt more angry than anything else at the time. Once Kris finished the rite, the occurrences seemed to stop.

I've had other experiences, but nothing quite as compelling as this one.
