I never said it was adult rated if you thought that was what I meant. I'm sure most adults have that anyways, its their business. But, My dad had a huge collection of gutted fish, his leg, which is mostly missing because of a motorcycle/car accident... And it was infected, no one wants to see his infected... purple, red and yellow-green leg. That's why I said I might be immature about it. I'm not immature about those "adult" things.

Easy solution, Pinkies right out of the freezer are the consistency of hard ice cream, I chop mine up frozen, don't even get my hands dirty.
the small pieces thaw faster too. so it's a win/win.....

Yeah, that it is by far the best way to go. I do that too. However, there are certain parts that do not retain their cohesiveness once they thaw and so some of your chunks end up being just a section of skin, and a blob of near-liquid.
No matter how you do it, the cut sections must be thawed so you still end up with a "river of blood" or at least a puddle. I don't mind, I just soak it up with "biscuits" of tilapia and feed them that too.:D
Mmmm.. Mmmm... good stuff. Biscuits of raw fish soaked in rodent blood. Garter snake delight. Yum!:p

We get all kinds of weird fungi growing around here and why shouldn't we, it rains 9 months out of the year, and has rained 32 out of the past 35 days or something like that but at least we can't store frozen meat long term outdoors like you can. I photographed some other fungi and I'll post that in the nature photography thread.
had no idea, i thought flames were man created ,another demonstration of what a great and informative site this is. no more mention of flames i promise
There really isn't much that we can take credit for "creating" actually. All we do is artificially select and work with what was already there to begin with. Combo morphs are about the only thing "man made" and even then, they are just the result of combining two morphs that already existed in nature.
Now if you're talking about erythristic or albino flames, then those are the result of taking a red or albino eastern and combining it with a flame. Both of those already exist in the wild but probably wouldn't have been combined without our help. Again, those are combo morphs. All the base morphs you see, even with ball pythons and corn snakes, came straight out of the wild.

Yeah, but that's just because all actors across the globe aim for Hollywood, which, like everyone else, chooses the prettier one when two comparable people (meaning that one of them isn't a sub-par actor) compete. Pretty people bring in more money, that's just how it goes, and the American movie industry has more actors to choose from.
Character actors are a completely different story. That's where you find interesting faces and body types. ;)

Well the misery just seems like it's never going to end. After a solid month of cold rain we had one nice day that felt like spring. That was April 1st. It's been raining pretty much every day since. Today was 51 degrees, and of course, raining. Surprise, surprise. Now we're heading for a freeze tonight. (second time this week). A couple of days ago, we had accumulating (up to 5 inches in some places) dime-sized hail and heavy snow along with our thunderstorms.
I just can't believe we are still facing this crap and I have to bring plants in so they don't freeze. It's supposed to be well into spring for cryin' out loud, but if feels like December.
Look, I'm not talking about a week or two of bad weather here, this has been going on since early February without a break other than that one day. Maybe 3 dry days since Feb 1st perhaps. That's it. And it's still cold in the middle of April. Headed for a morning low of 30 degrees. Jeez!

We don't normally get "Tornados" here but back in, maybe June 2000, we got what they called a "down draft". It came straight across my front yard, took down my 30' or so pine tree and kept on going. My husband had left for a golf trip that day and I had just gotten home with 3 of my kids at the time. Never knew the tree was down until it was over. If it had come from the North a little bit, the tree would have landed on my living room and/or bedrooms where we all were. My first clue was the fact that the wind started up and was goinf sideways past my back windows. That and it looked kinda green. Very strange.

One very nice thing about all the rain we've been having... The ground is so saturated, the worms can't stay below the surface because they will drown. Scored these worms this morning very easily. If that is a bullfrog tadpole,(it does look like one) then that's not even a big one. Come back and show us a pic of one with it's head filling the palm of your hand and the tail tip nearly at the end if your fingers. 7 or 8 inches snout to tail tip is about how big they get here in deep cool, well-oxygenated, muddy bottom creeks.
Seriously. Put one of those in a 5 or 10 gallon tank, keep the water cool and well oxygenated. It will get huge, and two or three years old before it even spouts legs.

I would have to assume that the only tadpoles I find here in November would be bullfrog tads, every other "lesser" species has legs and left the pools by then.
these things go down in the mud and come back in the spring to devour all the smaller tadpoles.
also if you look it up, they vary in size depending on the conditions of the pools and food supply.
Want to see a garter snake go crazy over food?, put one of these in front of it.

I've never known the tadpoles to be carnivorous even if you overcrowd and starve them. In fact, their mouth parts indicate that they are not. They forage on algae and detritus and so they do well on goldfish flake food, taking it off the bottom. Yes, they do vary in size. In warm oxygen poor water with limited food, they will transform while still rather small, just months after hatching. Where there is sufficient water depth and muddy bottom to survive the winter, and where there is plenty of food and oxygen, they get much bigger and delay transformation until they are 2-3 years old.
They are definitely a favorite food for garters but so are the young frogs.

04-26-2011, 03:28 PM
That is the dead body of another tadpole. They're not carnivorous. As I pointed out, they will eat detritus. I could swear I see a salamander larvae right below that body. Now those are carnivorous. They will prey on each other, and anything else in the water. Once something dies, the body begins to decompose, then yes, tadpoles will eat the particles coming from the decomposing body. They do not take bites out of it and they do not eat living tissue. They are merely feeding on cells being shed from the carcass. Detritus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detritus)
Dust mites feed on dead skin and hair shed by living or dead animals. Does that make them carnivorous? No. Tadpoles didn't kill that tadpole and they are only eating cells shed during the decomposition process.

Carnivorous is by definition a consumer of meat, no rule states that it must be alive.
A prime steak from the butcher is aged to beak down the fibers, does that make me a vegetarian when I eat it?
Bull frogs and their tadpoles are carnivorous.
When a baby garter slithers into a pool to eat tadpoles, if an adult bullfrog sees it, guess what, wham! baby garter is now bullfrog poop... Carnivorous.

It's not about beliefs. One can believe or perceive something that is not fact. While it may appear that the tadpoles are eating flesh, they are not. They only eat particles being shed from the carcass of dead animals by decomposition (detritus) and plant material.

We are talking about bullfrog tadpoles just be clear. Tearing anything apart is a neat trick being how they don't have the necessary equipment. That I would have to see. I have raised them and they couldn't even tear up a goldfish flake. They just sort of sucked at it until it falls apart into small enough pieces to swallow.

Are you just confusing predation with carnivory, is that it? Or have you misunderstood what detritus is?
Tadpoles do actively remove pieces from carcasses in order to consume them, some species are even known to actively take bites out of living members of their own and other species. They don't sit and wait for that carcass to turn into actual detritus before they dig in. Their mouths are more than capable of doing that job, by the way. Plant matter is tougher to deal with, than flesh, especially decomposing flesh.

I've personally never observed bullfrog tadpoles specifically, prey on anything. When I say detritus I mean "In biology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biology), detritus is non-living particulate organic material (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biotic_material) (as opposed to dissolved organic material (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissolved_organic_carbon)). It typically includes the bodies or fragments of dead organisms (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organism) as well as fecal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feces) material"
"particulate" being the key word here. You'll typically see them feeding on bodies only after they begin to decompose and shed particles. You guys talk like they're gnawing off chunks and even preying on live items. And when I say plant material, I am also referring to particulates and single celled plants. You won't see a bullfrog tadpole take a bite out of anything. Like I said, I've raised them many times and they just aren't capable of it. They really have to work at it to even break up a goldfish food flake. They never tried preying on each other and wouldn't even touch the bodies of their dead until they began to rot and fall apart.

Sorry to interrupt your argument, but, I was wondering...
Hey, can't you see we're busy with pointless arguing? How rude of you to interrupt!
Just kidding Chantel.:p No really, just putting frogs in the freezer is quite humane. They are quite freeze tolerant. I've seen pacific chorus frogs or even bull frogs freeze solid, thaw out later, and still be alive. They really just go to sleep. If they stay frozen cold enough and long enough, they just pass away quietly. They are quite beyond conscious awareness when they die from freezing. I believe they don't feel a thing. They just go to sleep below a certain temperature. The only other way is, if you have the stomach, to drop them in near boiling water, then pull them out quickly before they cook. They will die the instant they land in the boiling water. It's that, or instant freezing by liquid nitrogen.
Personally, I just freeze them. Just put frogs in a container and place it in the household freezer. It's not all that cruel. Happens in nature. Sometimes they get caught in he open and freeze. I don't think they suffer. Just keep them frozen at around 0 degrees F for at least a few weeks to kill any parasite larvae they might be carrying.
In the end, killing is killing. Freezing frogs or rodents even in a regular freezer is quite humane. They get cold, they lose consiousness (go to sleep). Either way, you can rest assured that it is the least violent and traumatic way a frog or rodent will die becoming garter food. At least they aren't alive with razor sharp teeth embedded in their assholomeo as they are being swallowed alive.

If it were live and moving, in front of me it would be even worse. I wouldn't go the other direction. I'd instantly find the nearest object (rock, gun, club, whatever) and chase that sucker. If I caught up to it, I'd shoot it and/or beat it to death, and feel much exhileration and satisfaction in watching it take it's last breath. I'd just like to know how they are going to accomplish it when all they have is soft, sucking mouth parts incapable of biting. You would think that if it's something that normally happens, I would have seen it by now , with all the tadpoles I've raised, but no. Not once. Not even when I was gone for a few days and they were starving when I got back. They couldn't even manage to eat the goldfish flakes unless I crushed them up into a powder for them, and sunk it. Otherwise, they would struggle with it for hours until the water finally dissolved them. Now that I have seen many times. Now if they are going to prey on each other or something else, what are they going to do, suck it to death?

If it looked like that, ^^^and it was in Vancouver, B.C. then it was a red phase pickeringi. Pugets are only blue in the extreme south end of the sound near Olympia, WA. In Canada, they look like that^^^ I already posted a picture of one. I see you're under the impression that all puget sound garters are blue like the ones you see in the market. Those are actually the exception. Most are not blue at all, but are instead quite plain with white or pale greenish white stripes, and Canadian pugets in Vancouver B.C. look very much like a fitchii. This is a puget sound garter, red phase, Vancouver island locality:
http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll228/adamanteus_bucket/Garter%20Snake%20Photos/2008_0412malepuget0034.jpg
That is the only possible red garter snake you could have seen at the zoo in B.C. and it is a puget sound garter. T.s. pickeringi. There are no concinnus in Canada, the nearest they occur is extreme SW WA. T.s. fitchii do not occur in western B.C but red phase pugets do, especially on Vancouver Island and the US border area.
Again, in northern WA and Vancouver, B.C. area, pugets are red like the snake pictured immediately above. Most pugets aren't blue at all but instead look like this:
http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/imgs/512x768/0000_0000/1104/0499.jpeg
The very blue ones like this, only occur in a small area of their range, near Olympia WA:
http://calphotos.berkeley.edu/imgs/512x768/0000_0000/1104/0482.jpeg
Your "concinnus" that you saw wild in Vancouver, B.C. could only have been a puget sound garter snake. T.s pickeringi red phase. They can be difficult to tell apart from fitchi but range and labial/head markings will tell you which one you found.

i have kept amphibs for many years and as a result i have amassed a lot of books on them, i am far from what you would call knowledgeable on tadpoles but i do remember reading in more than one of my books about a survival strategy employed by some anuran's, some of their tadpoles put on a spurt in growth and then turn cannibal, i think the reasoning was that in dry spells it allowed at least some of them to develop before the pond dried up
if i can find the relevant book or books i will add the info to the thread.

On another note ... I've been a bit inactive lately thanks to 'the breakup' - may be in a bit of a limbo with limited internet access from mid-next week for a bit with Terri moving out. Heads up to all - if you get in touch it may take a bitty for me to get back to you.

So do an experiment. See if you can get them to do what you say they do. See if they will prey on other tadpoles.
We're well past that. It's been studied, it's been confirmed.

I have personally witnessed this event in my pool when we raised the frogs. Actually bull frog tadpoles were even more aggressive than the tree frog tadpoles. They fed on each other when they had the chance.

I sprained my ankle pretty badly today. I was walking to the convenient store with my mom and real mom to get some snacks and lunch and on our way back, I was going to put one of my moms socks over the blister I got on my toe, and tried to sit on a 4 foot embankment. I lost my balance and fell backwards and smacked my head on the ground, too. My mom had to call an ambulance to help me. We all thought my ankle was broken the way it crunched and popped. Luckily, I'm fine. I can't walk though. I'm stuck in my chair. I have my new babies to help give me some company while I cant move ;)

In other news...
I had my first shipping fatality.:( I feel awful. I shipped two baby concinnus' (born in March) to Sonya610 in GA. I used those little clear plastic condiment containers, taped shut, with tiny holes for air, like I always do for small babies. One of the little boogers somehow managed to force his head under the lid and got stuck there. He died in route.:(

Yeah, that's the one that gave me the spider bite the last time. Only size that matches the bite. My boyfriend thinks that I'm exaggerating and that it's the size of a penny. It's the size of a quarter, and is going to get a hell of a lot bigger. The house is infested with these stupid spiders.

I'm sure they would. I have a washcloth in with Snap and she's almost always under it.
For my new babies, who will hide under the bedding if he heat is lower than 68, would wrapping a blanket or towel around the tank keep some heat in it? I like keeping my snakes pretty warm, especially when it gets so cold at night. I never let my office get under 60 degrees when I can help it.

Well, believe it or not Chantel, they've been surviving those kind of temps for much longer than humans have been around. They're quite well adapted. I wouldn't worry yourself over it. I wouldn't feed them much, if at all if it's going to be cold most of the time. It's difficult if not impossible to properly digest as it gets colder. Other than that, they should be fine.
