Well, assume that the video URL is this:

Ain't it fun to have standardized sizes and shapes?
Fun? convenient maybe but fun?
I did recently see some very interesting tanks and I wish I would have had the money to buy at least one. Guy sold all 20 of them in one day. They were I don't know exactly how long, but about 8 feet long, and were divided by glass partitions. Looked like something that perhaps was used in a pet store. They were really cool but I didn't have any money and they went fast.
Thanks for the youtube tip. I'll do that from now on.

Instead of just starting a whole new thread I thought I'd throw this out here once again. I didn't get too many comments or nobody noticed before. Amy is missing the middle scale on the top of his head. Weird huh?

Yes. The center scale is missing completely. In this case, the scale marked "f" Pingping (a tiny iowa albino I have that is Amy's half-brother) is perfectly normal. Scale is there.

Even better in person. Amy has quite a charming personality. Wins over the hearts of people he meets, even those that are somewhat repulsed by snakes in general. My little 6 year old niece is totally in love with Amy. Every time she comes over, she heads straight for the room she's in and wants me to get her out. She's not interested in the other snakes at all. So cute.:D

In a few weeks I'm applying to an online radio station... You can play what you like, say what you like, etc. My boyfriend and I were giggling at the thought of me buying an album by a certain Rick Astley... And in the middle of one of my rock/metal shows, rickroll them ALL! Haha. I know how much people hate stuff like that but since I can do it... I'd be laughing my socks off.
What do you think guys, should I do it? Should I annoy thousands of people?!

Totally true. I started my current job in Aug 2007. Fan base is determined not only by some extraordinary job performance in that first 18 months or so, but also by who's brown stains I had to wipe off of my nose. Luckily those people are still important and now, after a lot of training and time invested in me, I can get away with crap I couldn't dream of before. I guess what I'm trying say is, that "fan base" has covered my butt more than once this last year.:D
I worked 3pm-11:30pm. It's now close to 4am. No sleep. Back to work at 7am-3pm. Now my "fan base" will be there to pick up any slack I might leave, and go easy on me today.:D

I don
t really know where to post this but I figured here would be the best place. Has anyone ever woken up from sleeping or a nap with their thumb really red, sore and itchy? It happened to me yesterday after I had taken a nap. There were no marks on my thumb or anywhere else on my hand but it was slightly swollen. The pain was only in my knuckles and when I moved my thumb it made the knuckles of my other finger hurt as well. The itching and pain went away a small bit after I had my thumb resting against my glass of ice water. Today, it was gone but when I woke up this morning I had a new pain, it was in my elbow. It was the same sort of pain that was in my thumb and knuckles and when I move my arm it shoots pain down my arm and up to my shoulders. I even took a painkiller because it was so intense but it didn't even take it away slightly. Anyone know what this is? I cant possibly get to the doctors until Thursday so there's no point in telling me to go, the pain would probably be gone by then.

It's not out of the realm of possibility that you are still suffering effects from the bite that healed. You should tell a dr. all of this. Don't leave out any details.
Also, I have symptoms similar to what you describe but it's caused by a pinched nerve in my back; the nerve that leads to my hand, arm, and shoulder. I get weird itchy sensations and pain that seems to move around.
kibakiba
09-05-2010, 05:34 PM
Might have been that. My new meds are causing me to be really sleepy and after a certain point of tiredness I sleep really weirdly. Since I'm going to the psychiatrist I'm going to tell her about it to see if it might be a weird side effect from my medicine. I know when I got the thumb problem I had slept really weird and I was achy everywhere so I wouldn't be surprised if I had a pinched nerve or anything else. I kind of wish I could just find a good fit with my meds so that I don't have to deal with this stuff anymore.
ConcinusMan
09-05-2010, 08:01 PM
Well I didn't know about the meds. They definitely do weird things. I hope you're reading all the info that comes with them. They always list symptoms to watch for that could be danger signs of a serious reaction.
I have permanent case of Tardive Dyskinesia caused by a certain dopamine antagonist drug I was on for only 3 years. As a result, for the rest of my life, I will have episodes where I just can't talk. All I can do is stutter incoherently. It still happens from time to time all these years later.
If you can function at all without these drugs (takes about 6 months without them to really know for sure) I would highly recommend you get off of them. Many of them do more damage to the brain than they are worth.

I've been waiting all my life for meds to help me. All my life I've had ad/hd, and while I enjoy having it for some reasons.. I'm 22 and I haven't graduated high school because I have a hard time learning, understanding and focusing on homework. After I graduate I don't want to take them anymore. Psycho-stimulants are really creepy at times. I do read the info that comes with them but my psychiatrist is trying me on newer meds that haven't been out for too long. Only long enough to have a generic (insurance reasons) and none of the side effects are what I get. I get everything that's not on the papers. Lol. I have 2 years left... If I pass with every single class above a D. It's proven to be a challenge for me. I've been in the same math class for 3 years.

You said "I sleep really weirdly. Since I'm going to the psychiatrist I'm going to tell her about it to see if it might be a weird side effect from my medicine"
Well it doesn't take a genius to figure that out, especially considering that the main drug treatment for attention deficit is stimulants. Anybody on stimulants is going to sleep weirdly, or hardly at all.
I can't say I had all of those problems but I can say it took me from 9th-12th grade to pass basic high school level math class and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't pass it today.

Well I know the sleep is a side effect. I meant the pain in my thumb, knuckles and arm as the side effect. I used to take adderall and would stay up for 4 days straight before just passing out when I laid down for rest. I have to know all the stuff in my basic math class even though I've "passed" it, despite being 22, I'm required to take the HSPE. I cant graduate unless I pass the math section. Soooo... I'm stuck in this math class. As for sleeping weirdly, when I'm tired I'll sleep any way possible whether it be on my back or half way on my back with the rest of my body turned completely sideways. I cant sleep on my back, I have a problem with it and bending my back a certain way. I've gotten an x-ray but nothing's showed up. I think my painkillers make me focus better than any psycho-stimulant ever as... too bad I cant take them regularly like that.

My school failed. I was looking over my classes online and I was checking out the course material... and my "English" class... ended up being "how to speak English" class. When I signed up for them under it it had said "basic writing class for beginners" and honestly, English(as in the writing class) isn't my strong point, so I took it. This is basic as in kindergarten basic. My teacher was explaining the alphabet. I'm not THAT bad at English to need to learn the alphabet again. What a fail. it'd be an easy A for me but I actually want to learn something rather than have half my brain rot away while the teacher spells out "bed" and "dog" and "cat" and explaining vowels.

I have a whole new meaning for the statement "my school failed". I was in San Diego for my early high school and all of my Jr. high years.(grades 7-11) I failed US history and many other classes while I was there. It really put me far behind on my credits toward graduating. No matter how hard I studied at home or tried, I just couldn't learn in those classes at that school and I swear to you that I learned more by not going to class at all. It was a complete waste of time to even show up.
I eventually moved back to Washington. I was always interested in history and other subjects in which I was failing, but there was something about the way things were taught that I just couldn't learn in San Diego. After moving back to WA, all the sudden I'm getting A's and B's and it wasn't just because of the way things are graded. It's because I was actually learning and engaged in the classes. So, in that sense, my failing grades in San Diego was really not my fail. My school had been failing ME. Not everyone can learn in exactly the same way and I wasn't learning jack ship.
I hear you. It's just that often classes get so crowded an teachers are overwhelmed. I say if most of the students are failing in a class it's time to consider that the problem might not be the students. Everyone has different "teaching styles". If most of your students are failing well...

Thats how it was before I went into online schooling. My high school was crappy. I loved middle school, I never wanted to leave. I loved my teachers. In high school I was always picked on and all that crap, I was used to it but in high school guys are more violent. I got hit in the face by a senior. Luckily, me running out of the room crying made him feel bad and he told the principal what he did. He had hit me so had that I literally thought that he ruined my eye, I couldn't see and I couldn't open it. The teachers there could have cared less that I had a learning disability and they failed me just because. I did an essay in honors English and failed even though I did everything I was told to do... because I didn't "try hard enough."

Yeah, whatever. Don't believe a word of what they say. I'm sure you did your best. If that's not good enough then fluggem.
I failed english too time and time again. Apparently being born and raised as an english speaking human is not enough to pass english. Problem I had is that english was not just english, it was literature which I don't give one darn bit about and find it to be beyond boring. Cant stand the stuff. It's hard to read and retain information which you are not in the slightest bit interested.
For example "to be, or not to be.." I mean what the hello is that? Who cares?

Yeah, I know I did my best. My English teacher in middle school was completely convinced that I was going to be a famous writer or poet. She even had me sign my work for when I did become famous. Lol. I don't get most of that literature that honestly, you don't need to even know about. Knowing Shakespeare isn't going to get me a job.

That's reading comprehension. The point is to teach people to better understand the things they read. Quite useful for those, who'll need to read big books with small print and few pictures later in their lives. Being able to do that, is sort of a requirement at higher levels within most fields and if you're good at it, you'll have access to better jobs.
If you can't see the benefits of knowing Shakespeare, surely you understand the benefits of understanding Shakespeare?

That's reading comprehension. The point is to teach people to better understand the things they read.
I totally agree with that. I understand what the goal is and I even understood it back then. Teachers actually thought I had a problem with reading comprehension and put me in a "special" class just for that in the 9th grade. I actually didn't have a problem with comprehending what I read. For cryin' out loud, I had a 10th grade level vocabulary in the 5th grade. The problem was, I didn't give a hoot for the material. Give me something to read that is in the slightest bit interesting to me, even if it's a bit higher than my vocabulary or understanding, and I'll take the time and effort to bring my vocabulary and understanding up to speed.
You just can't force me to read a shipload of material that doesn't interest me at all. It seems like the more I comprehended the material the less I wanted to continue reading it - Shakespeare for example. Of course I won't recall the material because I wasn't interested and didn't want to read it in the first place.
I never was in my entire life interested in reading written fiction and yet, I was constantly forced to read it. Not cool at all. Of course, if I had one fiction writer that I could tolerate it would be Beverly Cleary, not Shakespeare.
Being able to do that, is sort of a requirement at higher levels within most fields and if you're good at it, you'll have access to better jobs.
OK, now you're sounding like the teachers. I gotta call bull on that one. "Access to better jobs" yeah right. I understand where you're coming from and I understand the logic behind that but honestly, give me a field of study that I am genuinely interested in and give me the reading material I will excell and comprehend the reading even if it's far above my "grade level". Then you can toss shakespeare and all that horse pucky in the trash. It was serious waste of my time and effort just to get a grade.
So, no. I don't understand the benefits of understanding Shakespeare. I do understand the benefits of putting effort into reading, comprehending, and learning a subject that interests yourself or at least learning and understanding a subject that supports your learning. Damn English literature has no part in my successful learning. I just hate it. I thought someday I'll understand it's importance and regret not learning it. That didn't happen.

I did give genuine effort to all material presented, and once I began to comprehend, it is then that I lost interest. Very good point though. You definitely brought up a very good point. That does happen. You're right. I wouldn't genuinely lose interest if I didn't comprehend it. Unfortunately, grades were based on not just comprehension but we had to keep reading the junk and keep discussing and writing about it for weeks on end. That's where I was left happily in the dust and failing grades.

Certainly not. I always had a genuine interest in science and biology. How could I possibly learn those subjects which I am genuinely interested in, if I didn't familiarize myself with Latin.
But no, never took any Latin whatsoever. The only Latin I have cared to learn was the words associated with my genuine interest in said subjects. For example "concinnus"
One definition is in my custom title. That's about all I've learned about Latin. No, not really. But you get my point I hope.
I only care to learn Latin as far as necessary to pursue learning in subjects that genuinely interest me. To study Latin, or any other subject beyond that end is a waste of my time and effort IMHO.
If I wish to make a fire, I will put forth the effort to learn how to make a spark. I don't need to study the complete field of advanced pyrotechnics in order to make a fire. Get my point?

While I know what you mean and I understand where your coming from... I don't believe that you can teach anyone anything useful if you shove things down their throat for them to learn. I'm the kind of person who learns on my own time. I'd rather study something I'm interested in. I have to take pacific northwest history in order to graduate... I don't need that for what I'm interested in, it's not useful to me. Too bad my school will only teach "American" history. I'd rather learn he history of somewhere else, I know American history. I've had to take it 3 times in elementary and middle school. I'd like to learn about... I dunno, England, or Japan. It'd interest me more, and I'd learn about it. In my history class I'm just going to take note, do the assignments, not retain any knowledge and burn the notes when schools over. Then it was pointless to take it, because nothing was taken away from the class. You know what I mean? Science, to me, is very interesting. So in that class I am more likely to learn something and being inspired by it than I would reading Shakespeare.
I have my mind set on a few different careers, and I'd love to take classes that help me to excel in that, but all I get is a bunch of bullcrap that isn't going to help me. History sure ain't going to make any difference. Neither is English and all the literature crap. Reading Shakespeare isn't going to get me more jobs in my chosen area. And "reading big book with small print" is definitely not going to happen with me! AD/HD kind of prevents me from even reading the textbooks in school. The most I can do is skim through and get little bits of information. Everyone's different, right?
I just woke up to an angry macaw squawking its freaking brains out so I'm a tired, unhappy camper at the moment. It's 8 am. I went to bed at 4 am. Ugh.

One of the most fascinating things about history to me is not so much the so-called "facts" about what happened in the past, but the different versions of what happened, depending on the point of view of the people who recorded that history. In other words, in the history books of another country or culture, you'll find pretty much the same events but interpreted way differently. You really can't take what they teach you in an American school history class as fact. You must read the history as written by various other cultures. American history books tend to smooth over or justify and glorify some of the more harsh realities that make America look bad.
So yeah, while knowing US history is important for Americans, it is also good to learn history of other cultures involved with the U.S. as written in their history books.

I have actually studied the latin language for 3 years while in grade school. I have also studied many other things that at the time, I could not appreciate. Looking back, I am grateful for the exposure to the many different topics offered to me during my education. I can appreciate literature, I can see and recognize that there are 3 sides to every story:D. Actually, latin helped me understand and enjoy language in general, especially our english language. Everything has a history and it can be most enjoyable exploring it.
Many subjects are not for everyone but if offered the opportunity, one should take what they can. I once read (and I won't say where) that you should never read beyond a word you do not understand. That is a lot harder than you may think.
I guess what I am saying is, take what you can from any and every opportunity!

It always struck me as a bit odd that people always said with 100% certainty that garters don't eat insects at all. I'll be the first to agree that they are not good for them, and should never be offered in captivity. But when hungry, in the wild, I really don't think it's impossible that garters or other small snakes may take a go at an insect, especially larvae here or there. As is the case with many topics, more research is needed.

Anyway, what I'm mostly whining about now, is that I can no longer get anything herp related at all in my home town. Nothing at all. I have to drive all the way to the country's capital to buy frozen mice, or anything else that I can't order online and those are the kind of prices I'm expected to pay.
There is one store slightly closer geographically (about 3 km closer), but it takes longer to drive there.
edit: apparently our largest pet store chain is about to open a store here soon, but I haven't heard anything about whether they're going to actually sell anything useful.

Corns here are cheap. There's at least a few in the newspaper classifieds here, they go from $25-$100. Some of the morphs are really amazing, however I'm unsure of their names. I know nothing of corns. I just like garter snakes :D

Baby corns at the reptile show seemed to be about $20-$30. Some might have been higher but there were lots of colors in the starter range.
One of our local reptile stores has a $30 (IIRC) 'starter' special- Tank, lid, heating pad etc. and you get a free corn snake. They usually have 4-5 different colors to choose from.

I own a dog and am currently watching a friend's dog. Today they found a skunk in the yard, and being the idiot animals that they are, decided to corner it...
So, any ideas on how to get rid of the smell? I think we may have managed it with a series of vinager, rubbing alcohol, dish soap, human shampoo, and 2 kinds of dog shampoo, but then right now I really can't smell anything. They're currently locked up in the bathtub and throwing a fit while I give my nose a chance to recover. If they still smell when I go back in there I need to have bigger and better guns!

Well, Steve, you may not have cried, but I just about did today. I'm sitting here regretting my decision earlier this year to get out of the snake-keeping hobby and finding news homes for everything. A couple of months ago, I received some bad news.
I'd acquired a female T.e.vagrans from someone who needed more space for his boas, especially after she had a litter of 12. I got the momma and nine of the young and had them all feeding well on f/t mice - filleted pinkies for the kids! An acquaintance said he had a friend who loved garter snakes. He took all but one, which I gave to my son.
I heard that all of the snakes, including the adult female, died on him. The one I gave to my son is doing very well. Likely tripled in size. Now eating whole pinks. But I regret ever giving up the rest of them. It's something I'll never do again unless I personally know the person they are going to.
Tonight I was reminded when I saw photos of the young snakes taken back when they could easily coil up on quarter!
So, I'm going to start over.

Hey! speaking of dead, how about the undead? I just had the most bizarre experience. One of my high-black 3 stripe concinnus was suffering from what appeared to be "failure to thrive" for quite a while now, showing signs of malutrition and on top of that, he retained his last shed. I was about to put him down when I found him "dead" yesterday. He was completely limp, not breathing, no anything. For all intents and purposes he was dead. I simply squeezed his head very hard to make sure, (again, got no response or movement) and tossed him in the trash.
He came crawling out of the trash this morning, tongue flicking, and apparently very alive. WTH? very strange, considering I smashed his head and I'm sure he was dead. I am completely shocked and have no explanation how he could have survived.

Sorry, but I really have to open up here.
I just visited another herp forum and found a thread titled: "Garter Snake and Milk Snake". The opening post contained the following message (translated):
Would someone happen to know where those can be found?
Lazy as I am, I can't be arsed to browse the internet for hours. That forum has a policy that basically states that if you don't have anything constructive to add, don't say anything at all. However, I can't help but feel that the poster needs to be taught a lesson. Especially considering that the first result on Google answers that question.
Of course it could just be a troll.
