Yay. I filled out a questionnaire yesterday and now the site that posted it sent me an e-mail telling me I'm one of the lucky 5/1000 who won something because they participated. So basically, I can buy something for my cat, my dog or my rodent at a 15% discount, because that bloody useless store doesn't sell anything related to keeping herps, which I pointed out to them several times when I answered their questions.

I've caught Wanderings, and even a few Plains garters off and on since fourth grade- back in '90.

As much fun as they are to observe and keep- I have been afforded another awesome opportunity to interact, and hopefully educate the masses on another type of wildlife-

Birds of Prey.

I waas able to hook up with a small educational foundation that uses a raven and four other ambassadors to help educate the public about the effect we have on our environment, and as a result our animals.

I am nowhere near a subject matter expert- right now I am training on bird handling- there is definitely a rush when you go to get a female great horned owl out of her kennel and she clacks her beak at you- Great stuff.

The feelings are akin to seeing a garter slip through some undergrowth after a futile morning of searching.

It really is an addictive high.

Ok, that's it- I am done raving.

When it's like that, just a layer up high carried by the jetstream, it makes and interesting halo around the sun. But it's raining where you are so you can't even get that.

The ash I was referring to was from Mt. St. Helens from 1979-1986. Much of Asia and on around to even Japan got some ash fall from the big eruption but when I was a kid we got ash dang near every time. Many people don't realize it erupted before and many times after the big one. Oh, and again on March 8, 2005 it send a plume of ash 38,000 feet into the air just like the old days.

Anyway, I've had more than my lifetime's share of trudging through that crud.

You're not really missing anything. Abrasive, irritating to the lungs, grey dust to sand consistency, turns into a black muck when it gets wet, will strip the clearcoat off of your car's finish no matter what method you use to remove it, when the top 6 inches of soil is ash, it's difficult to grow anything but weeds.. etc.

There's nothing good about it unless you happen to be a glass blower. If that's the case, it makes pretty colors.

Hey everyone, take a look at this garter snake caught near seattle. I cannot think of any species it could possibly be other than ordinoides but regardless of species take a look at those stripes. AWESOME! (it's easier to download it and/or zoom in.)

http://www.seattlepestanimalcontrol.com/images/collinsnake.jpg

It's on this website: http://www.seattlepestanimalcontrol.com/snake.htm

Elegans was my first thought when I saw the pic, too, but I'm wondering if there are ribbons in WA? Did some searching... this is the only page I found that diferentiates between T. e. elegans & T. e. vagrans and it does seem e. elegans are found in Washington: http://www.natureserve.org/explorer/servlet/NatureServe?loadTemplate=tabular_report.wmt&paging=home&save=all&sourceTemplate=reviewMiddle.wmt (link didn't work... search for Thamnophis... or here's the copy & pasted version:

2.102240
Thamnophis elegans
Terrestrial Gartersnake
G5

CAN: AB, BC, SK USA: AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NE, NM, NN, NV, OK, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY

2.102647
Thamnophis elegans vagrans
Wandering Gartersnake
G5T5

CAN: SK USA: AZ, NN, OK, WY

I'm still totally convinced, because it also places them in Idaho, Utah, Montana, and South Dakota? That's a huge range for my fave garter, but still doesn't seem right. Oregon and Washington I'll buy, but Nebraska???

No ribbons in Washington. That's why it's the only Thamnophis you will find in pet stores here. When they say no "native wildlife" in the pet stores, they mean ANY sirtalis. Private breeding and keeping falls under a different set of rules however. As soon as you make a business of it, all T. sirtalis are out, even if the particular ssp isn't native to the state since WA doesn't differentiate between an eastern and a concinnus. Anyway, it can get complicated.

The point is, yes, I know there are elegans in WA. Just not where I live, and certainly not on an island (almost an island) in the middle of puget sound.

The guy sent me better pics of that snake. It's definitely and ordinoides and here it is:

What? she strips? I would have noticed that. Oh wait, "stripe" must have been what you meant. What attracted me to this ordinoides was not the way she strips. I offered her no tips. :p What makes this snake attractive IMHO and rather not so common, is the shark contrast between the color of the dorsal stripe and the color of the lateral stripes. Well defined orange/redish dorsal and yet light yellow and well defined lateral stripes. Combine that with a dark background color and that is a winner. Great looking snake. Especially for a species that occurs in great numbers and in spite of the numbers, most look quite drab and dull.

I could see thousands of ordinoides and pass them up but if I found that one, it would be a keeper.

Pretty nice for a WA ordinoides. Real nice. Also happens to have a higher than expected upper labial scale count (most I've found have 5 or 6 uppers and sometimes 5 on one side, 6 on the other) and a proportionally larger head than I expect to see but that's no matter, it's still an ordinoides, make no mistake. And a nice looking one at that.

I'm sure it is. I have no doubt. It also sheds some light on your personality, as we see it here, that is. (I also did well in psychology) I won't even get into my exploits as the "devils advocate" most people can't even handle it if I told them about my past deeds. Hell, I can barely come to terms with it. I don't have to tell them, it's a matter of public record. Of course, deeds recorded do not necessarily reflect what a person's soul is "made of". Nor do they reflect what really happened. You absolutely cannot trust recorded history. If you saw my records it makes me out to be charles manso... well.. Not that bad but not even close to who I really am. Stupid moves on record while ignoring all the great deeds and accomplishments and generosity makes for very unbalanced picture wouldn't you agree?

I'm sure I could have done much better in the subject of English, if the subject matter and the method of teaching had been different. After self-teaching by motivating factors, (I wanted to learn and seeked out the knowledge on my own) I am at a much higher level than what is recorded in my education records. I know this to be true based on tests while I was in pris... on vacation. ;)

I won't even get into my exploits as the "devils advocate" most people can't even handle it if I told them about my past deeds.I may have misunderstood what you meant here, but a "devil's advocate" is someone who takes a position he or she does not necessarily agree with for the sake of argument.

Stupid moves on record while ignoring all the great deeds and accomplishments and generosity makes for very unbalanced picture wouldn't you agree?Absolutely. However, the reverse is also true and they never cancel each other out as far as I'm concerned. Especially not if they occur more or less simultaneously.

About the devils advocate thing, I told you I wasn't very good at english. I guess I misunderstood what you meant.

I'm saying I've made some terrible mistakes done things that go against who I really am. Those deeds are a matter of public record and if you only look at that, it makes me out to be quite the azzhole without values. Nothing could be farther from the truth. I am deeply sorry for those things, even as I did them. I feel at the time, I had no choice. That is not reflected in the record. Methamphetamine addiction can turn an angel into a demon overnight. Anyway, it was long ago and terrible decade for me. I have moved on.

Adds up to 100% NOT crap. Hey, I think I finally get math. NOT.

What's this "torrent" you speak of? wouldn't happen to be the same one that comcast has the ability and right to block, now would it?

Yes I know all about Torrents AND the alternatives. Torrent specific protocol are blocked by comcast ISP resulting in less than 1kbps torrent download speed. THE ONLY ISP besides dial up at my address, which means, the only ISP. NO other home options.:( NO choice of ISP since 1999. 2012 (hehe doomsday) is rumored to have 1 other isp option. I guess I'll hold out until doomsday:(

Either way, I don't care. I have alternatives to torrents or P2P of any kind. collected perhaps a thousand movies < DVD/PC and many seasons of favorite TV shows. I just want to watch old favorite series or new episodes/seasons and based on my subscription choices for shows, have a few waiting for me when I am ready to catch up.

Seriously, no 3G option either?

We got 4G high-speed internet that covers most of my metro area. The price and performance, not to mention you can wander all over town and have your internet, blows cable away. But just like all the other options besides cable, If I lived just a few blocks west, north, or south, I could get it. We have 3 choices, DSL,(sucks) Cable,(good) 4G wireless.(great!) Two of those options just never seem to cover my house. I'm right on the fringes and that hasn't changed in 10 years. Cable or dial up at my address are my only two choices.

I filed a complaint with the BBB about the constant rate hikes and the fact that I can't just go to a competitor because there are none at my address. 3 days later, my cable bill went from nearly $70 a month to $40 for the same service.:D

Not the cable company. Most of the money is used by the individual stations for operating costs. And of course, there's usually enough left for profit. The higher the ratings/viewers for their shows, the more $ they can get for their ads. The cable company is getting paid by your monthly premium to bring the stations to your home outlet. You are obviously missing the local commercials that cable companies commonly "overdub" over the national commercials.

Example.... Corning new channels, owned by Time Warner commonly sells local ads for local businesses and runs them instead of the national commercials.

Since when did MTV start advertising for our local businesses?? I must be old, because I remember when MTV actually aired music videos too.

I have lived at a dozen zip codes and several states over my life, and this practice is common from Florida on up to NY, and out west to Chicago......

These ads are sold by the cable company, and profit the cable company.

OK, I was vaguely aware that this done, but you cannot sell a commercial spot that has already been sold. Obviously, the national commercial interested party did not pay to air that commercial in that particular area. That leaves the spot open in that area.

I guess I should have clarified a bit. Time warner is NOT just a cable company. Truth be known, they own the stations (where commercials are swapped) too. A company can own the station AND be the cable provider. Afterall, this company has owned TV networks long before the owned the cable network to bring you the station. If they didn't own the station, or have a vested interest in it, they wouldn't be able to to do this commercial swapping cost effectively.

What you are talking about is nothing new at all. A company like "FOX" has stations nation wide. Let's not forget, they are a movie production company AND cable networks too. Obviously, not all their stations are going to show the same commercials at the same time. It still boils down to basically the same company that is profiting. The profit is still... Well, time warner is....On-Line Information Services; Other Computer Related Services; Motion Picture and Video Production; Motion Picture and Video Distribution Periodical (time magazine) Publishers (pt); Book Publishers; Cable Networks; Television Broadcasting; Prerecorded Compact Disc (Except Software), Tape, and Record Reproducing (pt); 711211 Sports Teams and Clubs.... and I'm sure there's more.

The bottom line is they are a TV AND cable network. Of course they can swap commercials on local stations they OWN.

Well, that's something you cannot find on the store shelves. They've tried, but the artificially faded jeans are just not the same.:D

Besides that, blue wash is often used as primer. Hmmm... a hot rod in primer, just before the expensive paint job. That's almost as cool as faded jeans.

So I will clarify more, my local cable company is NOT owned by Time Warner and they do it.

Personally, I think it is wrong, I have caught them (due to poor editing) downright stomping on national ads.

Should be illegal, because let's say I am the CEO of proctor and gamble, I signed a multi million dollar contract for my ads to appear during "American idol" (or whatever is "popular") and some local cable company advertises for "wolf hollow Indian gift shop" over the top of the ads I paid for, that just seems wrong.

There is also a little term called "syndication" where a 60 second slot is left open just for local advertising, but whenever I see "fucillo auto mall" trounce all over a Gillette ad, I just know that wrongdoing took place.

Congrats on kicking the ball and chains.....

I had an encounter with a past friend, he was all jacked up and hit me.

It's been years since that happened, and we are still never going to be true friends again ever.

You NEVER kick the ball and chain. You cut off your leg and the ball goes with it. It's very painful. part of you wishes you still had your leg. You miss your leg. The other part of you is glad you can now shock your friends by sticking a knife into your new leg, and it doesn't hurt. And that same part of you knows it was the leg or your life. It's a compromise. An ultimatum; die or walk with a severe limp for the rest of your life. Just a few days ago, lines all out, "You want one?" they said. I thought to myself "oh god yes". They said "hey, where you goin? Why are you walking funny?"

I was thinking, ask that to the back of my head, because if you ask me one more time to my face "you want one?" I might just crumble and give in. It's a battle 10 years long now. Nobody ever really wins. The battle continues.

Check this out. If you think concinnus are ugly, check out the freaky looking undead mofo in Stefan's avatar. But I digress.

My point is, I was watching "Fringe" Season 2, episode 20. What do my eyes behold?

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/4003/grimpinata.png

It's really Leonard Nimoy (yeah, we know he's ancient but still acting, quite well) depicted in an image produced by a fictitious communication device. Still, I almost expected him to say Grim piñata. Weird huh? If you think that is strange, check out stefan's actual picture of himself. He's like the Umpa Lumpa version.

Of course, I'm only kidding. :D he's not nearly as scary as I am in real life. (had to pick on stefan. I don't know why, but it had to be done.)

But seriously. Uncanny resemblance to that half-life character, at least I think that's what IT is.

Speaking of drugs, The pictures have that "strung out on speedballs, but still hanging on" look.

It's OK, because they are both wearing ties. yeah. They're cool. So are you stefan. Wanderings are still fugly as sin.:p

I don't have to guess what you have to smoke there. We have it hear too. All the latest greatest strains you have there, are available right here where I am too. Super lemon haze hit the market locally not long ago. Blueberry has been around for some time now.(love that strain)

That's why I was saying we have the netherlands to thank! (but we forgot to, LoL)

Only medical mj card holders can grow/posess. My sister in law has one. She can grow 6 plants. State and local law enforcement won't touch her. Since it's still against federal law, the feds could bust card holders, but they don't hardly do that anymore. Public thinks it's a waste of taxpayer money and they don't like it one bit, so the feds have backed off even though so far they have refused to change the law. Now we have obama and he wants to legalize and tax it. I say great idea!

This is your thread so I suppose it's up to you, but at the same time, this is a garter snake forum. We are a bit off topic.

Americans can and do grow the same stuff available in the Netherlands. Afterall, we get our seeds and growing methods from the best. You know who the best are. Trust me, it only takes a year or two for the best flowers you have, to reach my local growers/market. We use the latest greatest methods that they use in the Netherlands. Trust me.

It's pretty much the same for Holland tulips. You should see central Oregon in late April. OMG! as far as the eye can see, are the finest tulip blooms on the face of the earth. All the strains are developed in Holland. Oregon has produced their fair share of the finest as well. It's no different when it comes to Netherlands green buds, except that the latter are kept out of public and law enforcement eyes. (well, sort of)

Let's put it this way. If it wins High Times cannibis cup awards for 2010, I'll be smoking it, locally grown by the end of 2011.

I wouldn't want others to misinterpret and think I am a "pothead". To the contrary, I am knowledgeable and love all that is plant/animal related. I rarely smoke. But when I do, I can appreciate the best, and be a connoisseur!

Kind of like garter snakes. If you're going to have them, why not have the finest?

Steve knows. He's surrounded by some of the finest garters on the planet. Have you checked out his youtube channel? Awesome!

today I fed Sammy on the kitchen table, and it was kind of funny
she's a voracious eater, but I limit her to a mouse and a rat pup. so after she's done with her second rodent, she's still in the feeding zone and will go for anything that moves. I was sort of loosely keeping her contained on the table while waiting for her to chill, and every time I made the slightest movement she went to strike. a couple of times she actually made full open mouth contact with my arm, but then didn't bite. just sort of slowly peeled her mouth off sideways and reset her jaws.
Thing had a couple of mice also, so I think she's done with the birthing thing

Amy is downright vicious at feeding time. She smells food and she lunges into the air with mouth open. (I'll have to get that on youtube one of these days soon) Here lately, my fingers or hand have been getting in the way. She sits there and gnaws on me for some time before finally getting a clue.

She's never satisfied either, and I have to cut her off. She's so dang cute and everybody loves her but so downright vicious when it comes to feeding time. Her eyes even turn blood red like she's some sort of bloodthirsty demon!

I am sooooo sick of this weather we are having! We had that 74 degree day on the first day of spring. Hasn't got above 60 since and we've only had 4 dry days. Grrrr!!!!

Today was torrential downpours with hail and only got up to 54. Tomorrow we have a winter storm warning for the mountains (we are in a classic snow pattern situation) and we are supposed to break records for the coldest high temperature in may. Forecasted high of 49. Rain for the next 7 days. Jeeez:rolleyes:

Record cold has already arrived. It's 40 degrees at my house. 46-48 is all we're going to get tomorrow. Unseasonably cool for the next 7 days. I mean, colder than our january was.

That brings up a question. What kind of effect could this have on snakes in the late stages of being gravid? Any stage? I mean, this has forced snakes back into dens which already mated in Feb-march. Many of them ready to pop.

Well, I'm off and headed south anyway in couple of hours. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a spot with tires, wood, etc. to look under and find some there.

very interesting! This reminds me of a study done in japan on salamanders. It was found that the larva that developed in a tank with a vibration had bigger heads (which simply meant bigger mouths) once they reached the adult stage. this was because the larva believe the vibrations to be caused by tadpoles (this was first tested in the presence of tadpoles and later with vibrations) which could serve as a future food supply if the salamanders were adapted to feed on them.

I suspected something like that might happen for members outside the U.S. You really ought to see it. It's quite stunning visually and the snake thing at 49 seconds is really awesome.

There is no media restriction I cannot defeat including making backups of copy-protected DVD's and downloading youtube videos to my computer. I "pulled" it off youtube, converted it to WMV, uploaded it to rapidshare. If you still want to see it, you can download it here: RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting (http://rapidshare.com/files/400432170/KPsnoop.wmv)

(KPsnoop.wmv 34250 KB)

I'm pretty sure anyone, anywhere can use this link. Hurry, I don't have a premium account so it can only be downloaded 10 times.

BTW, why would it matter if they are animated?

I don't get this at all. WTH is going on here? Perfect weather today. Sunny 70 degrees. I go to a spot where I typically find a dozen or so snakes and find nothing. Here's the part that floors me: EVERY TIME I bring a camera this happens. I can go on crappy days or sunny days and as long as I leave the camera at home, I'll find snakes. And yet, it doesn't matter how many snakes I usually find or how great the weather is, if the camera goes with me, I find nothing. Unbelievable.

No personal offense intended, but DLR is a weetard.

His personal ego issues and problems sent him and his career down the toilet long ago.

It's just too bad that Sammy Hagar did not stay with Van Halen longer.

Don't get me wrong, I grew up on the real deal, but Dave threw his career away.

Sorry, I didn't. It's just a slight variation from a regular saturn missle battery. Instead of just popping in the air, it does the sparkly crackle thing.

My brother lit one that was 200 shots. It tipped over and shot the missiles directly at the party in the drive way. We were all sitting there cooking and drinking, and eating. Boy, was that interesting. The neighbor lit one that was 400 shots, with variable types of reports. That was cool. Didn't have the camera rolling either time. Darnit.

Fort Vancouver public fireworks display in 2008. Prior to 2001, it was the largest and most expensive fireworks display west of the Mississippi river. Even this video shot from Oregon, looking across the river into WA, is a mere shadow of what it was like in the 80's and 90's. Some of those morters (festival balls are a tiny version of the same thing) were the size of basketballs. Even from a mile away, you could feel the concussion from the explosions and they could be heard up to 20 miles away.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/j5eUAXZh478&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/j5eUAXZh478&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Well the private fireworks were awesome this year as usual, and went on from about 9pm to midnight. No way to film all of it. There was no shortage of large 2-5 inch morters (up to 5 gram reports!, BOOM!) like the pro shows use. A neighbor who is a doctor and can afford it, spent $200 on this thing used as a "grand finale" near the end of the night. $200 literally "up in smoke" in a matter of seconds. Yikes. That one minute in the video above cost over $100,000 though.

Actually I can see that one being a big seller in Utah, and a few other places.
Mormons keep a years supply of non-perishable foods on hand at all times. A big part of Mormon 'Home economics' is incorporating these foods into daily meals so that the supply is kept rotated and fresh pending the day tragedy should strike.

Survivalists and some campers/ backpackers would 'eat this up-' too, but its definitely a niche market product.
Too bad it was pure scam.

well it wasn't "pure" scam. it was just not what they were supposed to use the funds for; and I guess the Times reporter covering this didn't think it was as good an investment as someone in Utah might think

I do wonder what they're planning to do with the tens of thousands of mostly geese that come through here every fall and spring. They use some large wetland basins less than ten miles from JFK international airport as their stop-over and gathering area.
I also wonder that with such a concentration of large birds in that area twice a year, air accidents aren't much more common.
Bird strike - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_strike)
with the limited information at my disposal, I must conclude that this is not a common enough occurrence to warrant wholesale extinction of geese to assure our safety

Some idiot left food on the stove and left his apartment. I've been directing firemen and security guards for the last 50 minutes.

The apartment was 3 doors over. I came *this* close to evacuating the snakes.

I wouldn't even have hesitated. Screw the valuables and family photos. Snakes first!

Hope everything is OK.

Yeah, it was not a big deal, really. Didn't even see smoke, but I did smell it.

As for valuables, that would be the snakes and my external hard drive. The rest is replaceable.

Salvaged a 35*40*80 cm (width/height/length) tank today. A little bit dirty, no cracks and no conspicuous scratches, but there is a little bit of sand trapped between the frame and the glass. I have a feeling it doesn't hold water.

I don't need it, in fact I don't even have room for it. But it felt wrong to let it be destroyed. Especially when you have to pay about 1€/litre for an aquarium around here.

Just cleaned it. I'm not sure whether I should turn it into a proper terrarium and then sell it, or whether I should just give it away as it is. I'm in a charitable mood at the moment. That usually doesn't last long, though.

Oh you Europeans. I don't understand you. My only language might be called "English" but I do understand it's a hacked-up adulterated version but you people perplex me at times. I mean, to me a person is named "Lou" but I wouldn't think that is a place to relieve myself, and when I say I'm "pissed" I don't mean drunk on alcohol. When I am "pissed" it means I am raging mad with anger. I'm reading your conversation and yes, you're speaking English, but you might as well be speaking Spanish.

You guys are weird.:p

Of course, I say so with a light heart and I'm just 'razzin' ya if you can understand what that means.:D

I could swear that, at times, I understand French Canadians who can hardly speak English at all, better than I can understand English speaking Europeans. Maybe it's my fault.

Is that why you call it "John" instead?

How about we all just call it "the thinker" so it's not mixed up with words that could sound like someones name ;) instead of "I need to go to the loo" (or how ever you would say it, a friend said it that way) say "I need to go to the thinker :D" It'd be especially funny if you said it with the big smile on your face. Maybe it's just my ad/hd kicking in ;) :D

I am from manchester, in the north west of England, and work in a pub. At the moment we have some people from london stopping in the hotel above us as they are working near by.
Funny enough i was talking about this with them. They said something about 'apples and pears' and i was confussed so they told me it meant stairs  and also mentioned 'nelson mandela' and again to wipe the confussed look of my face they told me it meant a pint of Stella.
Now we are in the same country and i needed a translater half of the time so i totally understand some of the confussion with the local 'slang' words which get used alot over here.

LuLu & James! Missed you both!

Greg, glad you're still around, too. Sadly I've been MIA too so didn't notice your departure. Very glad it was only temporary, though!

Hopefully I can start finding some time to poke around here a bit more now that I have one son off to college and one back in high school. Summer was way too short! Snakes here are doing well. I've given up worrying about their erratic eating styles, so they get fed once a week and if they eat, great, if not it's another mouse down the 'lou' lol

Just thought I'd show this again. Useful link when considering buying tanks. Shows actual dimensions of various sized tanks. I prefer those that are 18 inches or less in height but have plenty of length. This is a good reference to have when you see an ad for say "100 gallon tank" or "70 gallon tank"

Ain't it fun to have standardized sizes and shapes?
