They called me 30 minutes into it saying they were going to die if I didn't come to pick them up. XD

:O the movie is brilliant! But that might be because I really like to see how americans "act in certain situations".
Just like Borat (Borat is better then Bruno...) I looooooooooooooove that movie!
I cannot recommend this movie to anyone because of its nature, but if you get the chance...Go and see it!

My tastes in movies range more toward stuff like LOTR, Star Wars (4-6, not too keen on 1-3), and the like.
Lately, I've been on a Mask of the Phantasm kick. For an animated movie, it is extremely well written, and Mark Hamill plays an excellent Joker. It's almost as good as The Dark Knight (and in some ways, better).
Any fans of Firefly/Serenity on here?
Stefan-A
07-24-2009, 03:29 PM
I was never really a fan of Firefly, but these days I'd probably like it. I don't think there are any good scifi shows at the moment.
Didymus20X6
07-24-2009, 03:36 PM
Firefly could have been a lot better if Fox has been more supportive of Whedon's work. They pretty much treated the show like a red-headed step-child during its initial run - they didn't promote it, didn't show the episodes in the right sequence, constantly bumped the show from its time slot for specials and such. Heck, even the way they put together the DVD's seems to be a hindrance rather than a help in enjoying the episodes.

Probably true, but that never affected me over here. :) I just didn't like the Wild West theme.

learned two things yesterday:
1) when you have to leave the house for a while it's good to warn your visitors as to which snakes had a big meal the day before; and it's important upon return to make sure all regurgitated rodents have been located, so as to ascertain you won't find one under the couch pillow hours later (at least we now know where that smell came from)
2) phenobarbital is apparently not used for humans any more - as of yesterday, it has not been used for humans for years (or decades, depending on which pharmacist you ask), so even though it was possible to fill a script 10 days ago it's . . . well, yesterday it was impossible, and I'm going to have to call the vet to see whether they can give my dog a prescription for whatever they do have at the pharmacy - hopefully something where the pharmacist doesn't treat me like a junkie if I loose a quarter pill

I have to ask, how did the rodent get under the pillow? On top of the pillow I can understand.
drache
08-02-2009, 07:32 AM
I guess some of the regurgitation happened there
what I am imagining (not having been there) is that the snake was slithering under the pillow and started regurgitating there, but because of the recoil from the first rat, her head came out from under the pillow, thus causing the second rat to be regurgitated out in the open

Back for another question. Was the snake being held by the visitor or was it just out for a walkabout.
I don't have any free ranging radixes here at the Ranch, other than the outside ones. I have a few I'd like to let loose. They would be where the people are. I do plan on building a open snake room someday.

sorry - I'm not on the movie track
I'm on the "can you believe what my snake did?" track
and isn't it funny how indulgent we are when their antics turn out okay?
Sean almost lost my snake, the one that's come back from the vet in PA with the rescue crew
because they came home late, my snake got to spend the night in a cooler knotted in a bag, and he didn't like it
in the morning Sean got a call from a neighbour that there was a huge snake loose in his yard (folks exaggerate)
so my guy had manged to undo the knot, get out of the cooler in such a way that the lid closed again (sneaky), found the doggy door, and was happily drinking from a puddle in the yard when Sean found him

Phenobarbital is still used for human beings but why are you trying to get it at the pharmacy? Your vet should be able to supply you with it. It might be more expensive but then at least it won't be on your record as you being on it. I doubt a pharmacist can fill a prescription for a dog, only for a human.

bummed, and still sick
today was going to be part two of the SPARKS training (supporting parents in advocacy, reform, and knowledge in science) and I really wanted to go
the hard part is that I'm well enough to be bored, but every time I cough, or exert a bit of effort, I'm instantly sweat soaked and shivering, so three miles on a kick scooter is probably not a good idea, not to mention that some folks might not want me there dispersing my germs
oh man - we were going to look at animal skulls and they will be trotting out another creature the public doesn't get to see (last week it was the tenrecs), and there is going to be more info on kids' learning styles, and I'll miss it all
part of me keeps thinking: okay . . . if I go real slow and don't care whether I'm late, perhaps I can get there without a major sweat attack and then I can just sit of to the side and not cough on anyone . . .
too bad that doesn't seem realistic
I do want to do their docent training - the one were you present animals to school groups. there's one coming up this winter and they really need people
maybe once I'm on the inside I can suggest a knock-out garter snake display - I see a real lack there and would be willing to spend extra volunteer time to make it happen

I've been abnormally busy since school started; I've had to cut my collection down to the things I love most: Cockroaches, eastern garters, and clawed frogs.
The litter my female eastern had has grown more than any other set I've ever seen. They're only a little over a month old and most of them are already pushing a foot long. I'll get pics of them up soon.
All my other easterns are doing great as well. The garter project is winding down with the data pointing to brumation gathering mainly serving the purpose of amassing snakes for reproduction.
Just in case any one was wondering where I've been. :P

Your call. I would be more likely to read a new thread though. Bury it in an ongoing thread with hundreds of pages and it's easily missed. Not that I really care in this particular case. It's not MY ad, and I really wouldn't mind getting my hands on all, or any of those snakes, or even just the housing at that price. I even offered twice what they were asking, hoping to get a response. Nothing so far but the ad is only about 6 hours old.

On second thought, I probably shouldn't have posted that ad. You guys might out bid me. Sure would like to have the milk snake. There's pics now on the ad, and the only email response I got was no text and pictures attached. They all look healthy, but that doesn't look like a candy cane corn to me. Looks pretty normal.

For some reason, I can't edit my post, so here's a third in a row, but I wanted to let you know I just talked to the lady. She seems very nice and knowledgeable about her snakes, and says that all 3 have been with her since they were babies. She's having a hard time now financially and as hard as it is for her, she must give them up. It's no joke. She was only asking $25 each, with housing. Not sure what accessories she has such as lighting and heat, but in her situation, I figured I would offer her a fair price for the milk. I offered her $50 and she accepted. I'm picking it up tomorrow. Oh, and BTW, she says her CA king is sweet as can be, and is CB purchased from petco.

Yeah, I know. Petco.. where the pets go (to die)
Actually, around here, my experience has been that Petco has a very limited selection of reptiles/herps and a very good rep for good husbandry/ sources. I've seen far worse. They are the only local source for a steady supply of pinkies, wingless fruit flies (for my CB spiny lizard neotates) and pinhead crickets for my carnivorous plants, live and frozen brine shrimp for my betas... well, they aren't so bad. Expensive, but not so bad in the quality dept. Hey, they kept my T. sirtalis concinnus well-fed for 20 years, when I wasn't feeding them wild-collected tadpoles, nightcrawlers, frogs, etc.

Petcos can vary greatly from store to store
we have another smaller chain here - Petland Discounts - same deal
some stores are just awful with obviously neglected animals and others are amazing
it all depends on the store manager, I guess, and sometimes one good knowledgeable employee can make all the difference
GarterGeek
11-04-2009, 07:13 AM
The Petco and Petsmart in my area actually provide decent (even attractive) set-ups for their creatures. The supplies are cheap, which I guess is the case for any chain store. The only problems I've seen are mislabeling and some misinformed employees. I've actually seen worse situations in privately owned pet stores.
ConcinusMan
11-04-2009, 11:00 AM
Same here. The petco near me recently moved into a new location and my lordy, this place is fantastic. The herp setup is amazing, the animals are very well cared for and healthy. There's a reptiles-only privately owned pet store here that I refuse to go in anymore because it breaks my heart. The condition of the animals is appalling due to terrible husbandry. Some of the animals are even dead, still lying in the tanks.

oh my, I just stumbled upon the mother lode of pricey toxic chemicals in one of my boxes - potassium chloroplatinite, and some other stuff, some of it unlabelled, but I can probably figure out what it is. I suspect, all I need is some hydrochloric acid and I'll be good to go - even found the lab notes
I can't believe I've shlepped this stuff along through something like six or seven moves over the course of a couple of decades - what now? am I really going to use it? does anybody do weird photo processes any more?

Today is the 1 year anniversary of the big storm for the Northwest. It started to snow about 6am with blizzard conditions at times and a high of 18 degrees. By noon we had about 10 inches and there was no sign of letting up. Snowed half the night too. When all was said and done, about 2 feet fell in 24hrs. The forecast had called for 3-6 inches. It stayed cold enough that we had a rare white Christmas. Check out the video: YouTube - Snow On Christmas 2008 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNN9oYZ3BQg)

I made a forum for finding your daemon, by the way daemons are good! I created this forum and currently running it if anyone is interested in becoming a member feel free I would be most happy if you became a member.
A daemon is your subconscious, take usually takes an animal form, but can be human forms.
My daemon is a settled cream pomeranian, so that makes me a pomeraniansoul.

What do people discuss on the forum?

12-30-2009, 03:35 PM
Alright :)
A daemon is like an imaginary friend, who you project (see) when ever you feel and talk to. The only thing is this friend is your subconscious so its a part of you a Daemon is one was of looking at this and quite awesome too.
A daemon is your subconscious that your project and talk to, which is in the form of an animal or if you wish a human. They usually settle as animals. No one else but you can see your daemon, your daemon is you, your subconscious.
The idea is cool my daemon is named Taziumi or Taz for short I'm a settled cream pomeranian.

OK, what the heck is going on here? do albinos not turn blue, cloudy, anything before they shed? I found Amy's skin in her water dish today, neatly wrapped around plant roots in her water dish. I don't know how long it was there. I do know it happened sometime between Saturday afternoon and Monday morning. If I had to guess, I'd say it happened late sun night.
For the past week, she's been hiding day and night, but eating every other day if I make her come out so I wasn't too concerned yet. I noticed that today she's been out for many hours, very active, and I decided to feed her and change her water when I found the skin.
Now her behavior for the past week makes sense but I saw no other signs that she was going to shed. I was beginning to wonder, she's definitely due for a shed. Just caught me by surprise since I saw no cloudy or dull in her colors prior to shed. She just wasn't active at all, regardless of temperature, but no blue, no dull. She looks the same. I'm used to seeing this happen with very small babies in the first 2 mos or so, but 6 months, 10-11 inches???

There's a reason why my nationality on my driver's license is "Internet".
I've also got five more unpublished fully edited videos sitting on my hard drive and material for another two on my camera's memory card.
Editing takes just as long as you want it to take (I barely edit mine at all), video conversion software runs in the background and posting the new video takes about 2 minutes, if you don't count the work YT has to do.

Dial-up? What's that? JK, I've been using dial up since before the internet existed before using AOL from version 1.0 to 6.0. Now I get 15 Mbps download from comcast cable (takes about 18 minutes to download 700Mb) but the upload speed will just kill you. It's less than 1 Mbps. But for comparison, you're getting about 4 Kbps. KILObits.
Judging from where stefan is, his speed is probably way higher than mine, especially the upload. Probably costs a lot less too since there's tons of competition among providers. I have ONE choice for high speed internet. Costs a fortune. In about a year, I'll have another choice that is cheaper. 4G wireless. I got sick of comcast raising my rates so I complained to the better business bureau and 2 days later, they lowered my bill from $70 to $44. That's more like it.

I also got this plastic rock formation thingy that is heavy but hollow inside. I used a file to make a "door" at the bottom, and some tiny vent holes in the top back side. Amy loves to hide inside of it. I also put a hole big enough for her to get through. She pokes her head out of the top all the time as well as using it to exit. I'm so pleased she likes it.

Thanks. I was quite pleased with myself for that one. Since I took that photo, I added a live tropical plant to the corner where the water dish was, and moved the water to the right. It looks a little like a palm or bird of paradise plant. Now it's not so drab. Got some green in there.
Amy is so darn cute. Whenever I'm moving something or working in her viv, she comes over to investigate and gets in the way, or she'll wait 'till I'm done, then come over and thoroughly investigate the changes. It's so funny.

you guys aren't going to believe this. i can hardly believe it myself. it only took me about 45 minutes to get out to the creek. by the time i got there, no blue was left in the sky, it dropped down to 45 degrees and a very cold wind is blowing. i just got to the computer shop where i work and the forcast calls for snow overnight down to about 100 feet elevation 30 for the low overnight. more cold and rain or snow showers tomorrow.
needless to say i found no snakes. i did enjoy the trip though. i saw bald eagles in their nest, enormous bullfrogs, lots of native ducks, a few turtles. it was nice to get out but it's just too darn cold now. too bad i didn't have my camera. grrrr!
this trip is put on hold till it warms up again. next time i will have my camera.

ConcinusMan
03-08-2010, 07:19 PM
Well bullfrogs are out but i don't think they are on the menu. chorus frogs used to be plentiful around there and there are usually temporary pools everywhere full of tadpoles up until about june but it's been so dry there are no pools and i heard no frogs.
still, even though the wetland is very dry and the creek is low, there will still be snakes when it warms up, especially ordinoides.
i was talking to a man who pointed out the bald eagle nest to me and he said he brought his grandkids out there last august and it was very dry but the kids were walking around with hands full of concinnus so i'm still holding out hope.

Yes, but baby bull frogs make a good garter meal.. Not to mention the tadpoles.:D
ConcinusMan
03-09-2010, 12:54 AM
Sometimes. Bullfrogs are a little different then those little tree frogs. Tree frogs always lay their eggs in temporary pools and develop quickly. With all the permanent deep ponds around there, the bullfrog tadpoles can take up to 3 years to transform into frogs. When they take that time, they are too big when they transform.
But, bullfrog tadpoles that find themselves trapped in drying, warm pools transform early so they are small. Unfortunately for the snakes, most if not all of the bullfrog tadpoles around there are in deep ponds and are very large. Too big for garter snakes.
Most of the concinnus around there depend on those spring and early summer drying pools full of trapped fish and tree frog larvae and adults. That's just not happening this year. Still, same thing happened last year and there were still plenty of concinnus around from what I was told.
As bad as I want to see some snakes soon, it wouldn't be bad if it rained for the next month, heavily, and filled up those pools. When that happens, it's a concinnusTopia!

some mornings the interactions with a certain short person leave me wondering how we ever arrived at this level of civilization
after all - we're just a heap of specialized cells, with one set of cells trying to tell the rest how to work together; and then that set is trying to tell another boss set of cells how to run their heap
then you throw a pair of socks into that mess and it all goes to hell in a hand basket

Hey Rhea, if you think the complex life forms are crazy interesting, just get some of the "lower" life forms such as an amphibian, such as a simple bullfrog.
Take bullfrog tadpoles (for example) of the same age and from the same clutch. Keep half in very warm oxygen poor water and feed them just enough to keep them alive. Take the other half and keep them in cool, oxygenated water with plenty to eat.
The disadvantaged tadpoles will turn into tiny frogs within 6 mos of hatching.
The latter group will get huge and take up to 3 years to turn into frogs.
Chorus frogs from the western US lay their eggs ONLY in stagnant, still, temporary pools. They can go from egg to frog in less than 60 days!
Amazing. Simply amazing.
ON the subject of spring, nothing but blue skies and increasing temperatures forecast for the next 7 days. upper 60's to low 70's this weekend. It's a breeding week for local wild garters for sure.

I've been thinking about parting with Jewels. She's a gorgeous 4 foot female Pueblan milk snake but she brings me no joy. She's beautiful, she's strong and healthy but I have to ask myself why I keep her around. She's pissing me off and not giving me any joy. The only way I can describe her is that she is one of those that you can't take your eyes off of, but she's a beeeeatch. Know what I mean?
She gets "pissy" when you try to handle her, she's basically a PITA.
I buy her expensive mice at petco and she devours them.
I buy her less expensive mice elsewhere and she refuses to eat them.
She refused to eat the last meal offered and after some time I removed it.
I neglected to make sure the slide lock top was locked. Ooops!
I realized my mistake less than 30 minutes later. Jewels was no where to be found. I tore her room upside down. I moved furniture, I even took all the drawers out of the dresser and searched every possible nook and cranny that could possibly hide a 4 foot snake. NOTHING. I found nothing.
Then I heard another member of my household scream a 4 letter word. Then she mentioned something about things crashing down off the wall in her room as she was sleeping. When she said that, I went rushing in there and found jewels half way up the wall on a shelf (don't ask me how she got there, I'm still amazed, it's about 5 feet of sheer vertical wall to get to the shelf)
I captured jewels without incident (so to speak)
Anybody want a milk snake?
I know it's my fault that she got loose. I got her off craigslist, in NOV '09, nursed her back to health but she's just too high maintenance and no joy. I'm sure she'll make a great breeder. Grrr...
Just wanted to vent about that incident.

Hah! I can relate! I just got back from the vet yesterday because my problem child and least favorite snake, my male sand boa, got himself into trouble. He's been a finicky eater. Most of the time one of my other snakes has to finish his dinner, which they do GLADLY, which is also probably why the vet thought Draco was FAT! Well "Achilles" decided to go for a walkabout the house 2 weeks ago. I only had one snap on his lid because, Hey! he's a sand boa. They don't don't climb!( Rolling eyes! ) Well, live and learn! I found him Friday. Actually the cat found him for me and, being a cat, he tossed him around a bit. He had a couple of puncture marks and some major under the skin bruising. The vet gave him a shot of antibiotics and showed me how to tube feed him medication. In addition, I gave him a bigger tank with a higher quality heater. He seems to be doing better although he DOES NOT LIKE THE VET! He practically LEAPT into my arms, begging to go home. NOW he shows his personality! But he never nipped once through the whole experience.
Before this happened I was thinking of rehoming him. Now I can't because I spent more on his vet bill than I did buying him!
On a different note, I LOVE my herp vet! Very informative without making me feel like an idiot!
Good luck with your PITA. I hope things get better for her somehow!

After a mention of student loans on another thread I realized that I had not shared some wonderful news with you guys...
My son worked his bum off and received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy! It's a huge process to get through, which included a 20 person panel interview with our local congressman, but he did it! What this means is that he'll receive an education equal to that of an Ivy League School, have the opportunity to play Division One Water Polo, at virtually no cost to us or him. He will have to repay the US government with 5 years of service following graduation, which he is more than willing to do. With the economy the way it is, graduating with no student loans and a guaranteed career, even if it is with the military, is just too good of an opportunity to pass up. He's interested in Aeronautical Engineering and the Air Force Academy is known as "the little engineering school in the rockies." Unless he does something really dumb this should set him up soooo nicely for life :)

Hey guys I emailed the guy in the photo and that's his son. He says the snake was caught (3 of them) in Poulsbo, WA just north of Bremerton. That's dang near an island in the Puget sound. It's only connected to the mainland far to the south by a thread.
He's a wildlife removal guy and he says the snakes were living in a rock wall and the woman living there has a phobia and wanted them gone. I'm thinking, where there's 3 there's more but anyway, interesting. Right smack dab in the middle of puget sound out on a peninsula surrounded by sea water. it doesn't look like a puget garter to me so I thought it might be an ordinoides but that would be one awesome ordinioides if it is. Dark red dorsal stripe and yellow(?) lateral stripes? Awesome!
He says his brother has better photos and said he would see about sending them to me.
Stefan-A

Interesting dorsal stripe on that one. If it's not a T. elegans, it almost has to be T. ordinoides.
Another striped snake of that state would be Masticophis taeniatus. But it doesn't look like one of those.

For some reason it just never ocurred to me that it could be elegans because of the location. I really don't have a good resource for range maps. Is there a good one online somewhere?
I know elegans is here in WA and I'm pretty sure I used to find them here but I just never do anymore. At least not in my county. I don't think I've ever seen one that had the lateral stripes a different color than the dorsal either. Every one I have found in the past in western oregon was always been a handsome black and yellow 3 stripe snake.

Thanks, that's better than nothing. Concinnus in the LA area? I dont think so. The extent of their southernmost range barely, if at all, makes it into northern CA. Northwest herpetologists would argue, and have been arguing for years, that true concinnus is only in NW oregon and SW WA only as far north as longview, wa and as far south as eugene, OR.
Perhaps this is a case of CA red-sides or other sirtalis being mistaken for concinnus. Still, better map than nothing. It does show elegans as being in my area but I haven't found one since the early 80's unless I go south into oregon. Same goes for ringneck snakes too. They're all gone from clark county, wa as far as we know. Thanks for the link. very helpful.

Whatever their range was when the map was made, it's smaller now.
ConcinusMan
04-08-2010, 03:46 PM
No doubt. Another thing that range maps do not show is suitable habitat. Obviously if there's none, you're not going to find them, even inside their range. The So. CA border for example, is part of elegans range. you won't find them there. There's no suitable habitat left. Concinnus are a bit lucky where this is concerned. Plenty of their habitat does not get developed and never will, so they can be found even in heavily urbanized areas, in pockets of suitable habitat. Where I found the latest wild concinnus, it is highly urbanized all around but the land where they were found is not suitable for development. Often, this includes creeks and waterways, providing corridors of suitable habitat connecting various populations.
