I heard on the late news last night something about fish washing up DOA down river.

You know the coal industry lobbies hard on our government to just leave the industry alone. ‘It’s just as safe and clean as nuclear power” yea right. And the politicians just sit back. Sad

drache

yeah
of course they're really downplaying any possible hazards
and it's not that hard because nobody wants to look at that stuff anyway
mountaintop removal gives me the creeps too, and I'm sure there must be two or three other people who know about that stuff outside of the people who are dependant on that industry for their livelihood
clean coal - seems a bit of an oxymoron . . .

These days, but vergrandis wasn't returned to the durissus complex until 1989. The photo pre-dates that. At the time it was just plain old Crotalus vegrandis that I kept.

Hey, does anyone on here raise mealworms? I've been buying them, but did some reading last night and I don't really see why I can't produce my own. The beetles they turn into should be edible for the lizard, right? Anyone tried?

You just need a bucket with a couple of inches of oatmeal and a few beetles to get the whole thing started. From there on it will pretty much take care of itself.

Basically. I mean, you can add very small pieces and very small amounts of fresh vegetables every now and then, but you have to remove what they don't eat in a few hours. And fish food provides them with a bit more nutrition, but this is just extra stuff. Basically, you can breed them in a bucket of oatmeal. And keep them dark, dry and warm.

I think it will be neat once I get it together. I'm just a little overwhelmed by all the work that has to be done, and where to put everything from the current salon. I probably have a lot of junk I don't need anymore, and I also have to buy a few things that I use at work, but don't belong to me, like a waxing pot, and a pedicure bath. that's pretty much what I'm going through right now
I'm turning a basement into an acupuncture treatment room & office
I need it pretty quick too and it's now at the point where I feel I need drugs to go on, but I know my body just doesn't handle caffeine very well - turns me into a screeching harpy at the slightest provocation
I was having visions of downing shots of super strong oolong until the top of my head lifts off, probably because the top of my head seems to be weighing heavy on my neck
yesterday I banged together this shelf in a niche behind some pipes and getting the boards in there was a major pain in the neck, shoulders, and a few other body parts
this isn't even permanent, because the boards were scavenged, and well . . . more needs to happen there, but it will hold the herbs and keep them out of the way, and it's not in a very visible area
oops - here I am procrastinating again

anji1971
01-07-2009, 08:25 AM
Oh, Rhea, I completely understand..........
Thankfully I can handle caffeine, and I'm hoping if I get enough it will do the trick! Got some good ideas, just need the funds.
Is your basement an unfinished concrete room, or do you have a little something to work with?
Mine is unfinished, dusty and someone years ago painted one wall an ugly dark blue, one hospital-mint-green-with-rock-band-logos-pencilled-on, and left the rest plain. It's sooooo visually appealing!!
On the other hand, if you turn into a screeching harpy lady, maybe others will be very quick to help you finish it, just to make you stop. It's a thought......:D

Anyway, we've had a fair bit of snow over the past few days, and sub-zero temperatures.... So yesterday afternoon was perfect timing for the central heating to give up the ghost! The repair man can't get to us until tomorrow afternoon, so it's freezing in most of our house.... in fact I just walked past a herd of pengins in the kitchen, and even they were complaining about the cold.

It's somewhere between -10 and -15C here, judging by the draft from the poorly insulated windows. According to Forecastfox, it's -12C.

Something really odd is going on at my local pet store.

I went there last week, like I've done dozens of times before, and asked for some frozen mice, about 2 weeks old. I got a bag of mice that were clearly 3 weeks old, I told them that the mice looked older than what I asked for. They did what the clerk did in Monty Python's "parrot sketch". I thought: "Fine, I've got a few 2-week-old ones left, I can afford to play this game. I'll need more 3-week-old mice soon anyway and I bet they'll charge me for 2-week-old mice (which they did)". I was honest about it and tried to correct them, but they were convinced that the bags the mice were in were correctly labelled.

So, today I went back to the store for those 2-week-old mice I didn't buy last time and this time I asked for week-old mice. Sure enough, what I got was 2-week-old mice.

You'd think that they'd notice things like that, the same people have sold me mice before and gotten it right and besides, 3-week-old mice are twice the size of 2-week-old ones.

interesting.... well good for you i suppose.....

i went to petsmart today... and i got really upset... there in this cage ith was like 1/2 of a ten gallon tank with 2 baby ball pythins in it... it had some substrate, one hide and one water bowl no basking spot or anything else.... but that's not even the worse part.... one of the 2 had really bad stuck shed with pieces all over and the water dish was way to small for him even to submerge his head in it.....:( and even worse than that both of the two were really really thin.... you could see their spines and the ridges that weren't supposed to be visible.... they were active but it really just looked like they were trying to find food and or warmth....... all the rest of the animals were fine.... i mean they were all in small cages but at least they had the necesities..... all except those poor little snakes....:(

then stopped by the Chevy dealership, I don't trust anyone but them to look at my truck. have a vibration, $174 later... 1 hour hooked up to the test monitor, 5 quarts of synthetic oil, filter etc...

still some vibration , thinking shocks or the steering column. UGH this sucks.

I drive a 2003 Chevy Avalanche
What did they do for the vibration at the dealer? Is it while driving at higher speeds or is this something you feel in the steering wheel while driving slow, like in parking lots, or just when braking?
Are you tires original type, or do you have larger or offroad type tires? Original rims or aftermarket?
Just wondering- used to work at a GM dealer. :)

they hooked it up to the computer... found no issues, said it could be inside the engine, like the spring or valve.

the vibration is more when you go up hills, or press on the gas pedal - not fast, when braking there is no vibration. I don't think they are off road type tires. We just got 2 new ones. wonder if that could have an issue.
but Kaufman tire said we needed new shocks, which is the 3rd time they have told us. Rims are original. We haven't added any mods at all.

Thanks Loren for your help!!:)

My favourite part was the "babies" that were actually a group of real ADULT yellow anacondas.

In recent years, CGI has replaced everything! and too many times it looks too fake.

Come on, it put these guys out of work! Poor things have had to resort to panhandling to survive!

Anyone ever see the film "Man hunter" with William Peterson (Grissom on CSI) as the "Retired" FBI agent who consults Hannibal Lechter for advice on catching the "Tooth Fairy"

"Red dragon meets Miami Vice" it was released in 1986 and "Red dragon" is essentially a re-do of it.( The script is almost word for word ) A Michael Mann film. (Hence the Miami Vice feel, and the use of common characters from the show as actors)

Not quite as nauseating as the more current Hannibal films either.

Found it at a pawn shop for $5 Worth every penny.

just had to call an american friend to check this, because it was the first inauguration I'd ever watched
see, I'd thought they had separation of church and state in the US, and being so terribly literal, I was in total shock that the first speaker was some religious guy
I'd no idea that this was common practice and felt such an acute sense of inappropriateness, I had to leave the room
my friend assured me that this is perfectly normal and I am still puzzled
this reminds me of a story that a friend of mine had told about going to a famous chinese doctor some place in china
the doctor had told him he needed to eat some pork chops
my friend told him he couldn't do that because he was a vegetarian
the doctor said "that's okay, vegetarian can eat pork chop"
except I think the pork chop story is funnier

Well, "congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

If there's one thing I like about the US, it's the Bill of Rights.

Shanley, hope your dog is ok :( Was it pyometria? There's "open" and "closed" versions, basically w/ open pyometria the infection drains, you see symptoms and it's often treated sooner and the dog has a better chance of being fine. With closed, there's no drainage and no real symptoms until the dog is very sick. They're often septic(or infection running through the body). The timing sounds right :(

I've just been hit with a cold, hard reality.
My little girl is growing up. The tomboy who was always covered in dirt, wouldn't wear a skirt if her life depended on it, and left her hair hanging in a tangled mass all around her face, has, in the last week, learned to use my flatiron to straighten her hair, talked about getting her ears pierced, and today made me put her hair up, in a loose bun, with a flower in it, and soft tendrils hanging down the sides.
She went from almost 12 to a young woman in moments. What the hell happened???? I'll have to lock her up soon.............

I have to admit, though.........part me is very proud of her, and thrilled at the prospect of being able to buy her "girly" things. And I don't believe she's ready to totally jump off the tomboy bandwagon. A good blend of both would be wonderful.

Last time I spoke to MK (Gertie) she was fine, but that was a few weeks ago.

Kinda miss her quirky replies, flirts with Loren and head bunts with James and Stefan.

gosh
I just had the weirdest thing happen
I was just petting the cat, and she got all relaxed with her belly turned up, and I held her paw for a moment, and suddenly I was flooded with how fragile it is - not just the paw, all of it
this is how people must launch themselves into panic attacks, because it was a bit frightening
not that I don't normally know about the fragility of it all, I just don't normally get flooded like this - weird
it made me want to pare down my zoo to what I can quickly stuff in a bag and take with me when bad people come
boy - do I ever appreciate living in a pretty safe place
and perhaps I shouldn't be watching Oz for a while

Wow Rhea... that brought back a strong memory. The only time I really remember feeling like that was when my first son was an infant. I was home alone with him and it suddenly hit me. He was crying and I was on my way to him when I tripped. It started out with the thought "what if I fell and hit my head and died." Then came the images of the baby crying all day, sitting in soiled diaper, hungry, etc. I think it was the thought of how I am totally responsible for this living being and his safety... his very existence depended on me. It's a bit overwhelming isn't it?

Now what I came here to whine about <gg> Above son has a water polo tournament in southern California this weekend. I'm sending hubby and the boys and staying home with Gizmo(the new dog). I thought about boarding him, but with him being in and out of the shelter so much I just couldn't do it just yet. I'm a sucker. Anyway, so I'm sending them off early tomorrow morning. I've shopped and packed and done all the good mommy stuff. Started printing out directions to the hotel, hotel confirmation, etc. and would you believe they don't have a schedule for this flippin tournament yet? It's one of the largest water polo tournaments in the nation and the first game is less than 48 hours away. Many teams have to travel from out of the area. There's NO schedule anywhere! This is ridiculous!

Update:
Ggggggggggrrrrrr... so I find the schedule, posted today... and out of 83 teams in my son's age group my son's team isn't listed.... could explain why we haven't heard an update from our coach... sigh... this is beyond silly... seriously, one of the largest tournaments each year... probably the second largest behind junior olympics... I know it's a logistics nightmare with kids playing at dozens of pools all over Orange and Los Angeles Counties... but come on... just want to be done with my "to do" list! :)

Sorry to dominate the Shh thread lately :) Just wanted to update that as of this afternoon, yes, less than 24 hours before game time, with most families including mine already on the road, they finally have what they say is a "FINAL" schedule posted. They added Shane's team to the very top flight :D:eek: Good news is that there will be college coaches watching and if they have to choose a flight to watch it will be that one. Bad news is that Shane's team is no where near ready to play at that level. Oh-well. Cross your fingers that they don't embarrass themselves! :o :)

Tami - was that game yesterday?
and how did it go?

I'm sort of eating my words a bit this morning
when I went to Sean's yesterday to get my snakes probed, he had a beautiful young iguana sitting on top of a cat carrier, and not thinking very much, I said "that's the kind of critter I'd like to foster" - leaving off the "some day" part
so Sean just says "take him" and my brain is scrambling about what the heck I just stepped into - oops
so I say "all I've got right now is a 4'x2' screen cage" and Sean says "that's more than I can give him right now"
well - what more was there to say?
it's a good thing Trader Joe has 1lb bags of washed organic southern greens (collards, mustard green & spinach) for $3.50 - it wasn't really worth it just for the beardies and uros, but I understand iggies can tuck in pretty well
so he's housing under Mikhaila's bed right now and we'll see how he gets on with the cats later - I figure the cage isn't very big - I should set him up a basking spot in the living room

jitami
02-08-2009, 01:52 PM
Oh my goodness Rhea! What does Mikhaila think of the new guest?

So far they've lost 3 games, two yesterday, one this morning. The scores were relatively close, so not too bad. Losing their two yesterday means they play earlier and hence can hit the road to head home earlier today, so it's not all bad. They have one more game at 1pm(pacific) and then a 6-7 hour drive home. I'm really missing being there, but the time is going by fairly quickly. Gizmo gets really whiny and anxious in the evenings, tho. He knows his daddy and boys should be home! I feel so sorry for him. I wish I could explain things to him. Well, I do explain things to him, but he carries on whining anyway :(

drache
02-08-2009, 03:25 PM
are they feeling okay about their losses?

we're all liking our new guest, whom we've been calling Max
well - maybe not the cats
he's been hanging out on the window sill under a basking spot all day - taking up the prime spot
here is a pic from this morning before he snagged the window spot

Max is very cool! He's beautiful!!!

They're fine with the losses. For whatever reason they haven't won much this winter and they knew they were placed in a really tough flight. They have a lot of talent, but just don't play well together. They're playing their last game right now and are up 10-5 so hopefully they'll end on a high note :)

drache
02-08-2009, 05:39 PM
cool
sounds like they're free to enjoy themselves then

Max is a cranky git
he didn't like the bath (???) and ended up being snappy at me
he did deign to take a piece of apple from me (dessert), but then he got extra angry, and put up quite fight when I removed him from the window sill to his cage - it's a good thing they're not very bendy in the middle, and Sean clipped his nails for me
he'll be fine in a few days, once we settle into a routine of sorts
the cats are scared of him, which I find amusing

I just can't get over how cute Max is :) I, too, find it amusing that the cats are afraid of him! You should take video :)

Been on the phone non stop for the last couple hours. My van... yes, my van... has stranded my family on the grapevine(I5 north of Los Angeles):mad::mad: Hubby and son's vehicles are basically play toys and subject to all sorts of issues on a regular basis. They abuse them and it's pretty much expected... but my van... my van is the sensible, reliable, family car... blah... so they're waiting for a tow truck and thankfully my dear friend is on her way back from a dog show in Arizona so she's going to rescue them and I'm going to go pick them up at her house a couple hours away. There's no rental car companies open now so they'd be stuck until morning otherwise. I have some time before I have to take off, but yeah... that's what I get for complaining about little things like the schedule... sigh...

We tried to save a sick Iguana once, he died sitting on my chest.

I refused to let him pass on alone in a box. It was hard.

That is one handsome red Iggy. Some day when I can build a six foot tall enclosure and deck it out with trees, I'll adopt one from a local shelter that gets them in frequently.

On the subject of lizards, A guy I know has a mating pair of Savannah Monitors, his lady just laid a clutch of eggs, If they succeed in hatching, I am on the list for a TRUE CBB Savannah.

Most Savs sold in the US are "Ranched" and that whole process sickens me. (Most likely Chompers mom was dead long before he hatched!)

Hornets23
02-10-2009, 12:54 AM
Sorry for my ignorance..but what exactly is involved if they are "ranched"?

02-10-2009, 01:00 AM
Sweeeet! Looks like she is going to be happy. She's a really awesome looking spider! I have five now so I think i'm going to slow down for awhile. They are all "nice" spiders...mostly Brachys, and also a Rose hair and an Antilles pink toe. I would love to get one with a little attitude but i'm a chicken so far. The scorpion is pretty awesome too.

infernalis
02-10-2009, 01:24 AM
They gather pregnant females, hold them captive till the eggs come out, then either butcher them for the hides or dump them in the wild, wherever it is convenient.

I was under the impression once that "Ranched" meant "farmed" or bred at a facility...

I couldn't have been more wrong.

In third world countries like Africa or China, it is common for people to gather large amounts of pregnant animals from the wild, and hold them in horrid conditions until the eggs are laid.

Then they either ship the babies or the eggs to the USA for the pet trade.

drache
02-10-2009, 06:09 AM
that's horrible

our fosterling doesn't have what I would consider an appropriate enclosure, but he seems totally content to sit on the window sill in the sun with an additional basking light
he gets an east window in the morning and then I switch him to a west window in the afternoon
basking and eating seems to be pretty much all he wants to do
the only time he moves is to turn his other side to the sun, or to get up and be big when someone approaches above his eye level

Thanks Lori, was a long night, but we got home safe and sound at 5:30am yesterday morning. Slept an hour :) Just heard from the dealership and the engine is toast. It's 5,000 miles out of warranty  Their estimate is $4,000 to $4,700 :( We're going to borrow or rent a truck and trailer and go pick it up this weekend. Hubby says even with renting a truck he should be able to fix it for $2,000... I'll be without my van longer but for the $2,000+ difference I'll live.

Wayne, that is horrible! Grrrrrr...:(:(

If you are serious about gettiing blue one, I would do a lot of research on species first. I dont know too many blue ones but the gooty ornamental has really potent venom and cobalt blues i've heard are really quick and pretty much like having a pet hole. Maybe an Antilles pink toe would be a good option. They are an awesome color where they are young and then change as they get older but they are pretty cool. Anyway, I dont know how serious you are but i just thought i would throw that out there just in case.

Me, biggest chicken in the world when it comes to spiders, actually caught a black widow in a jar for the kids to look at. I used a long stick but still! Thankfully I'm not afraid of all bugs, just spiders, well, and ticks...ew... I really tried when they were little. Lots of squelched screams <gg> I'm much better about spiders now and that's probably why. I'm not convinced fear is completely learned, tho. Neither mom or dad were afraid of spiders and my grandma is deathly afraid of snakes. She used to make us jump up on a picnic table if there was even the tiniest snake in the yard. Then she would proceed to jump up and down and scream! Thankfully my Grandpa would usually just move them and not chop them to bits like she would have liked! She was even afraid of rubber snakes, pictures of snakes in books, etc. True phobia. I watched her mom kill a sweet little lizard with her cane... grrr... my cousin and I were sneaking up on it and BAM squish. Yeah, not sure it's a totally learned thing
