I'd prefer goose or duck
Thanksgiving is a family event and I put up with it - grateful that it'll be over by Saturday
I so much want to have a real holiday - one that involves spending time with my beasts

Been cleaning the basement today, found a couple boxes covered in soot.
Cracked one open to see if I should throw it away or not, and holy cow it is filled with pictures, some in good shape, some not.
They were the pictures my mother had in her bedroom when the house burned down in 1994.
My whole life, my memories, once thought to be gone forever:eek:
All this time tucked away in two plain boxes I never opened until today.
There are even double prints of many of them, Got me thinking, If I buy a new photo album and fill it with the duplicates I can give my sister a Christmas present that will probably make her cry (with joy)

oh man - what a morning already
Mikhaila's got a cough and it's raining, so of course she's not going to White Plains, meaning I'm not going
I'm supposed to meet my vet there though, to pick up Drache, damn!
so I kept going to the rescue, to see whether I could catch Sean loading up, because I didn't want to just call and ask whether he would bring back Drache for me
of course he won't say no, but I feel like I'm dumping on him and I want to express that . . .
I ended up scooting over there three times in the rain - way too early of course, but I found some great loot in a street corner trash can on the last trip, so it wasn't a waste
finally Mikhaila pointed out to me that he probably brought everything to his house last night and is leaving from there, so I ended up calling him
I feel so bad about not going and talking to the vet myself

Wayne, what a wonderful find. I know it's hard but it's also an amazing gift. I can't imagine how it would feel to go thru my parent's house... a non ending flood of memories and emotions.

it's not even that I want to go
I'm exhausted and the only reason I was going to go was because of Drache and the vet, but I feel awful about not showing up for that
I mean, it's probably not a really big deal for Sean, since he's got to go anyway, but I still feel like I'm taking advantage of him
maybe I should soothe my conscience by bringing the rescue folks some yummy baked goods some time next week

Seriously, it sounds like you've been friends with Sean a long time, and friends don't mind helping out at all. I've found that most people out there are very sympathetic when it comes to last minute changes of plans due to sick kids. It's a normal part of parenthood, and no one will fault you for it. If I had a nickel for every time that's happened to me............

I stopped into the shop to see Lorena, his girlfriend
she didn't seem to think it was a big deal and I feel a bit better - soooo tired though
Mikhaila seems fine right now - just the occasional coughing fit
the stupid thing is that now that she's in 5th grade, too many absences could make it hard to get into the public middle school of her choice, so I'm super cautious the moment it looks like she might be catching something
I better go nap now

For me, Saturday is my "Monday". I start work early, and spend the entire afternoon grocery shopping and running errands. It's seldom a fun day.
Mondays, however, the salon is closed, so I don't have to work. Today I'm baking Christmas cookies all day, so the house will smell all yummy, and it's even decided to snow a bit for me. YAY!

I absolutely love baking! For the holidays I end up with six or seven kinds of cookies, and anywhere from 6 to 10 dozen of each. I'm at the point where there are 5 kinds of cookies that it's mandatory I bake, or people will hunt me down and kill me.
And silly me throws in a new one every year just to see how they go over, so I can expect the "must bake" list to increase each holiday!
drache
12-01-2008, 07:48 AM
not that I normally bake, but I must make brownies for the rescue this week
there a tiny spider making it's way across the window sill next to the computer and I love how it has just one leg sticking back, against the thread whenever the terrain changes (objects) and it might need to rappel
Drache did not come back yesterday
the vet did bring him to White Plains, but forgot to bring his meds, and ended up taking him back
since I wasn't there, I didn't even get to see him, but apparently he's doing well
the doc took a culture from the most recent abscess and switched him to a different antibiotic
so I'll get him next weekend

Good news about Drache Rhea :)
Just popped in to say that I am so sick of reading about guppies! The only thing that keeps me reading is my fear of killing them all... well, they're mostly feeders anyway, but it would be nice to not kill all the pregnant females due to some stupid error on my part. The whole tank cycling bit has me a worried cause there's not a lot I can do to effect the outcome. By the time dangerous amonia/nitrite(?) levels are reached there will likely be fry in the tank too... who knows??? Gonna take a break and clean my house or something! lol
drache
12-01-2008, 01:15 PM
have you tried using a product like "Cycle" by Hagen, or - hm . . .
that's the one I used to use, but other companies make stuff like it - beneficial bacteria to help the cycling
makes a huge difference

jitami
12-01-2008, 04:53 PM
Thanks :) Stress Zyme came up in one of the reviews for Cycle. Seems someone actually did a lab test of the two and found bacteria in the Stress Zyme, but not Cycle. There are good reviews of both, though. I'll probably go with whichever the first pet store I stop at has :)
Lori P
12-01-2008, 07:31 PM
I use the Stress Zyme every week in the minnow tank. I had read the same thing about Cycle, that the quality wasn't there.
Keeping a proper tank is certainly a bit of an art form. But also know you can drive yourself crazy with it. :-) I think the biggest mistake people make is keeping the tank TOO clean; for example, don't over-siphon the gravel, as you'll pull out the good bacteria, and when you change your filter cartridge, stuff some of the old "gunk" into the new one to kick start the new colonies of bacteria.

It does seem that the English are obsessed with the weather, we certainly talk about it a lot! I guess it's because it's so variable..... If we have a heat-wave it lasts three days, then it rains. If we get snow, it's never enough to stay for long. We have no extremes and no certainty of what tomorrow might bring.
Most countries have a climate... we just get weather!

Ohhhhhhh I'm so bummed. And of course, I come here for a group hug. I just had to make the very rotten, stinkin decision to but a moratorium on taking in new rescues. Our bills are too high, donations are down to nothing, and there's just no way we can take in more thru the winter... we have to feed what we've already got. I was looking at New Hope's bills yesterday and it just hit me that, omg, we can't even pay what we already owe.
I've never had to do this before and it just makes me sick with worry over the ones we won't be able to help. And of course this is happening to rescues all over the country, it isn't just us. I just kept hoping we'd somehow pull thru.

Our Janosch had just been waiting for a chance to get his teeth into one of ours. I couldn't change the water without him watching intently.
My only little "trost" was the fact that he was sick as a parrot when he was there to welcome my sad little escapee. Couldn't talk to him for a few days. Instinct or not, the sight was too horrid for me to forgive him 5 minutes later.

There were stacks of DVD recordables with television programming from all over the planet.

Good news, Roger did not lose his home after all!!!!!! YAY
He owned 2 houses, the one out back of his home was already ruined, He bought it several years ago to get the land, and prevent any new neighbors from moving in.
The house was empty, no electricity, no utility of any kind.
The investigation leads to arson, but at least it was a house no one lived in.
The couple that used to live there allowed literally a hundred unchecked, inbred, flea infested cats and dogs urinate and defecate everywhere, to the point it had soaked into all the wood, useless.
Apparently some local kids were using the empty house to smoke pot and drink in.......
So that ended well:D

Got over bronchitis, my son didn't have it. He ended up with h-flu virus, which is not the same as the flu. He took his yucky meds & he is sooo much better. As for me, 3 Friday's ago, I woke up with the WORST neck pain, by 5pm, I couldn't bare the pain, & I couldn't move my head at all.
Urgent care, took x rays. I had pulled several muscles. gee I have no idea how. Was put on pain meds, anti inflammatory, & muscle relaxer.
Okay 2 weeks, better.. still stiffness here & there, I use a heating pad for it.
I have had this hoarse, raspy voice, I can't sing or yell!! LOL also been extremely exhausted, tired, want to sleep. I have mono, & laryngitis!! Lovely. This time, they only gave me one medication. My throat is sore, & my left ear is sore. I hate this time of year, i catch everything since my immune system is shot!
Other than that, I am feeling good... weird huH?

Oh, dear........
Rhea, Wayne & Stephanie, so sorry to hear about all the rotten luck. :(
I wish I had something cheerful to say, but unfortunately, tonight I logged on to get some moral support myself.
I just found out my uncle is dying. My mom went to see him on Monday, and they found him in a diabetic coma. We've been hoping all week that he'd pull out of it, but today they did an MRI and found extensive brain damage. He's not going to come out of it at all.
It's one of those things that we knew would happen one day, due to the severity of his illness, but it still seems so unfair. He's not that old, and he's had so much hurt and suffering in his life. He lived alone, and my family kind of took him under our wing and made sure he had people to be with on holidays and the like. And for the last few weeks, it appeared he was finally going to find some contentment. He'd found a girlfriend, and was talking about travelling with her, and seemed so hopeful for the future. Now this.
I just can't help but feel he got cheated somehow, and the worst part is that we're all just sitting here powerless to do anything. :(:(

Lymphoma.........I lost a dear friend to that one. But, it is an unpredictable cancer, and it can go into remission over and over again. She had it in her twenties, and made it for another 30 years before it got really aggressive. I will keep your mom in my thoughts. I hope she is one of the lucky ones! Anji, I'm so very sorry about your uncle :( It's so hard to feel powerless, yet so often we are just that. It sucks. I lost my aunt to cancer a few years ago. Young, beautiful, active, the true backbone of her family... it was so hard to see... she had a very aggressive form of breast cancer and she went from thinking she pulled a muscle to being given a couple months to live. Unfortunately it was very painful and at first she just wanted to go. It was less than a month from diagnosis to her passing, but the last several days she finally broke down and admitted that she didn't want to die, wasn't ready to leave her kids and two very young grandkids, wasn't ready to give up on the retirement dreams she shared with her husband... so unfair... There was just nothing we could do. Nothing to truly help her. Yeah, that helpless feeling truly sucks.
It's her husband who sends me the multitude of jokes :) and I got my first two Christmas cards in the mail yesterday from him and his daughter's family... the grandbabies are pre-teens now :) She definitely left behind a legacy, just wish she were here to enjoy it.... sigh...
Big hugs to you and your family Anji...

temps really dropped in my sun porch last night, and I decided to bring my youngest pair in
I'd provided some supplemental heat last night, but this morning the temps were in low to mid thirties, and I thought that's a bit low, even though they've got tons of stuff to burrow in
I guess, pulling that tank out of there woke up some of the others
my anery plains male in any case didn't seem to find 35ºF/2ºC too cold to come out for a drink of water
so I'm a little less worried now - it won't drop lower than about 10ºF above outside temps out there anyway, and I'll hardly ever need the supplemental heat

My uncle passed away a few hours ago. It actually happened much faster than I expected, but I think it's better that way. He was kept comfortable until the end..........I guess he was just plain tired. He'd been sick for so many years. I got to spend a couple hours at the hospital this afternoon, and say goodbye. I hope he's now found the peace and contentment that eluded him in this world.
Probably won't be around on the forum for a few days. Lots to do, and my mom is going to need extra support. She was very close with her brother.
Just want all of you to know I appreciate the kind thoughts that have come my way. HUGS.......

It's unusual but it's 68 and sunny in Kentucky.
It's supposed to be 13 Sunday. CRAZY!!
The saying goes if you don't like the weather in KY just wait around for awhile.
I love working for the school system! Today was my last day for 2 weeks!(and I still get a paycheck):D Love Christmas vacation!

we've got it too - almost a half a foot
I was so stoked yesterday because the somewhat judgmental neighbour posted on our neighbourhood list thanks to the nice person who shoveled her sidewalk, and I was able to tell her that it was the nice boys that play the loud music she hates (basement band - hard rock and they're good)
made my day

We got about 8 inches yesterday. And today, we decided to visit the cemetary where my dad is buried to put a wreath on the grave.
Bad idea.
We spent 15 minutes poking and digging in the snow to find his plaque, using the snow brush from the car to poke around, and our hands and feet to dig.
Suffice it to say that 3 or 4 other families will be very grateful that we uncovered their loved ones plaques as well. We did finally dig my father out of the snow, and put our wreath up.
The tranquil beauty of the snow-covered cemetary is completely trashed in a 12x12 square foot section, and I'm sure we looked like a bunch of wee-todds out there, but it was good for a laugh!

We've just had lots of rain, which has made lots of mud. I hate mud. One of the horses was being a goofball today, rounded the corner of the barn at a full gallop, and just clean wiped out in the mud... I thought he'd killed himself for sure. I need to put up a "No galloping when wet" sign.... LOL

I would rather have flying bugs than snow(shoveling) I came from Illinois.. which we had plenty of that stuff!! ha ha
Georgia is beautiful in the spring... summers were nice, when we had rain, & no water restrictions. This past summer was HOT, & very HUMID. I got alot of sun!

omg so i walk out to my car with my sis and her bf who stayed late to fix her car and slept on the couch so we all walk out there he was going to drive us to school..... we walk out and there is alot of snow but the driveway seems clear enough to get through.... well he had a honda civic... a really old and crappy one with one wheel drive and so iwe all get in the car and drive down the drive way.... we get about 20 feet down and the car stops he decides to get out bc he thinks the car is stuck so he tried to open the dooor... too much snow!!! we were locked in the car stuck in our driveway!!!!!
so then we have to call our dad to come and dig us out of the car!!!!! he is sleeping still this was at 7:30 in the morning so then we had to wait for him to wake up and get snow stuff on so he could dig us out of the drift... about 10 mins later we have one door free.... we then spent 3 hours pulling the car out and shoveling the driveway just enough to get out!!!!!!!!! it was completely rediculous!!!!!! the through way was closed bc of the snow drifts and the wind but our stupid school as open!!!!

Every time they showed the guy's stomach with the "map" I sat there thinking "I wonder which part Stefan lives in?" :D Really Stefan, if you haven't seen it you should... not a true representation of your country, I'm sure... but a little local flavor anyway :)
Of course, with any Bam movie there must be a disclaimer... not appropriate for kids or really anyone else

I had my "silent night" Saturday and Sunday. My monsters had an early Christmas at their dad's, and returned tonight. :D
Seriously, though, I'm actually glad they're back. They're really good kids. In fact, Megan is upstairs cleaning her room as I type, without even being asked. And Kieran is always so quiet, it's easy to forget he's here. Never gives me a moments trouble, that one.

but yesterday wanted to argue back at her brother.

when I got on the computer this morning the headlines about that Tennessee coal sludge spill was the first news related item I saw
it seemed pretty big
I hope none of our members are affected - and I don't mean just today, but apparently that stuff is going to keep moving down stream and disperse
the interesting thing was that I then (being at my inlaws who have cable) I went to go see it on TV news, and CNN had it as a tiny btw toward the end of their news cycle, after christmas shopping, wheather, air traffic, etc - I guess they don't want to spoil the holiday spirit
kind of weird in light of the fact that the NY Times did seem to think it was a top story front page news
here's the most detailed web coverage I found
Massive Coal Sludge Spill Devastates Tennessee Town (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/12/24/massive-coal-sludge-spill_n_153382.html)
i'd be pretty bummed if I was down there, even if my house wasn't affected - talk about a black christmas
