Don't you love the soft, velvety feel of a Hoggy? They feel a lot like catapillars.
Hehehehehe! I'm just tickled for you. I know you're going love and have so much fun with Boris!

He is very smooth, i love it.
He is a bit tubby but he looks good with it lol. I a so very happy with him. i can't help but wait for the first bite off him though :(
Garter_Gertie
09-30-2008, 08:49 AM
No, no! Don't get me wrong! His weight's pefect. They're tubby snakes compared to garters. He looks perfect - no way over weight.
Hoggies don't usually bite. I don't know what's been recommended to you but I was told to feed my in the deli cup he came in. And the thing to do is put the snake in first, THEN the pinkie. Other way around and your Hoggy could think your hand's food.
That's about the only time a Hoggy will bite. Biting's not really in their mode of defense. They strike with a closed mouth. CB's don't do this, sadly, but in the wild Hoggies will - if the striking doesn't scare off whatever - will roll over and play dead.
In general, and each snake is an individual, Hoggies rank as good as garter for docile behavior. They will hiss and whine and complain, that's for sure!
Lulu Bennett
09-30-2008, 09:00 AM
oh i know they are docile and that they will firstly dry strike and play dead but i think 3 out of the 6 snakes i have had have bitten me as a result of a feeding accident.
I have got a big pair of tongues to dangle the pinkie with so that should be good enough to stop him from biting me lol.
Garter_Gertie
09-30-2008, 09:03 AM
I've not yet worried about it. I figure if it's going to happen, it will. I will tell you I wash my hands a BILLION times more than before I had a Hoggy! LOL!!! Just in case Niizh should think dog/cat/garter/my food smells good!

Ah damn, just one more week before we're heading home again....
Its so weird. This weekend will be around 35 celcius and spring just started. Bearded dragons are emerging, waterdragons are hatching, snakes are comming out everywhere and its spring, spring spring!
Next weekend we'll be heading home again...10 degrees celcius, time to start brumating the snakes, resting the beardie at home and autumn...
Sh*t, I'm going to miss this country...But I would love to see my own creepy crawlies again!

Holy pinky parts!! I was just dumping some minnows back into their tank, and I'd had a couple of pinkies at the bottom of the bowl. One little tiny foot fell into the fish tank, and the minnows DEVOURED it!! So I pinched off some more little tiny feets and legs and tails and the minnows ate them all in a frenzy. LOL How's that for gut loading the fish?!!
Garter_Gertie
10-04-2008, 09:34 AM
Thanks! I'll now feed the guppies in P & J's 'swimming pool' pinkie parts prior to tossing them. Food chain!

Actually a good idea for snakes that wont take rodents. Makes fish into the perfect meal - nutritious, but with a bit more sustanance to it.
Seems like you'd probably runout out of pinky feet before it really did a lot of good though. :)

He needs to find a home... we already have 2 office cats here and the vets aren't even thrilled with them. He won't survive at my house, the dogs will hurt a kitten, and I've got close to 30 feral cats on the farm (all fixed of course) that could hurt him. And of course, there are so many kittens out there that finding a home is difficult. So we'll just keep plugging on finding a home and hopefully the vets will eventually get used to him...

I think most vet offices have at least a couple cats, but coming from the owner of a dog who would love nothing more than to eat them it's really a pain to have cats lounging around who have absolutely no fear of dogs... don't know what the solution is... Lori, that kitten is adorable and I know there are never enough homes... And yes, I know my dog is the one with the problem and yes, I keep control of her... but it's so hard when there's a cat lounging on every surface :(

It smells alittle weird to me, but it's ok! I can handle bad smells!! LOL Maybe cause I could never smell before.. HA HA I had blockage so bad, till a year ago, had sinus surgery done! I can SMELL from far far away!! LOL

Better to not be able to breathe and get sinus infections.

oh man
I just plowed through Stefan's garters thread and realized I put some of my babies in a critter keeper a couple of days ago
so I went and looked and one was missing - damn!
turned up on the floor, chewed up and dead - damn!
and it was the pretty green one too - damn!
it's not been a good day
the reason I even have the time to hang out here is because I'm sick with a flu thing and all I can really do is moan and sweat, along with coughing and blowing my nose
poor baby - I feel so guilty

Guys, I had to share this-- you know the little kitten, Bernie, I posted about yesterday? So he's got a really wicked upper respitory and eye infection, and we're having a hard time clearing it up. He's not been eating well, loosing weight, and I've been trying anything to encourage him; I had him back at the vet today and we switched his antiobiotics again, and I bought some of that A/D canned food which is used to entice anything to eat... he still wouldn't go for it.
So this evening, when my cat Souri was begging for a mouse, it occured to me... wonder if he'd eat a pinky?? Well, omg, did he eat a pinky!!!! He ate 6-- he went NUTS for them. How cool is that? He's not only eaten but gotten something as all-natural and healthy as it comes into his system!!!! I can't wait to tell the vet tomorrow-- you know it would never occur to them to tell someone to offer a pinky to a kitten. lol See, my snake hobby has helped another little creature get on the road to recovery!!! :-)

I don't think there is a traditional Finnish recipe for snake. Teriyaki, maybe?
Sorry about your snake, by the way.
drache
10-11-2008, 09:28 PM
thanks all
didn't know teriyaki was traditional in finnland, but it's probably good with any protein
the traditional finnish thing I want most right now though is a sauna
short of that I've been hot bathing, bundling up, and creating mountains of sweat soaked laundry
I do think it's working - will know more tomorrow
still a bit upset about the baby
hadn't planned to let Sammy have another litter, but now part of me wants to - just because of that one baby - weird, huh?
I'll probably talk myself out of it again

Finnish quisine is practically indistinguishable from Swedish, so I wouldn't know. :D
It just seems like the kind of meat that would need something like teriyaki, or some form of chili sauce. Something a bit stronger.

STORY TIME.
So after school today I found my friend Gigi and found that she needed a ride home. So we took'er home. Her house is on the edge (part of, really) a forest that borders protected land (separated from the protected stuff by a river.) So we were driving to her house and I looked out the window when we were getting near to an area where there are normal snakes. 'Lo and behold, I saw something, BIG AND BLACK, laying out in the sun. I demanded my mother stop the car, and before she had a chance to I hopped out and ran after the snake.
In my excitement I mis-identified it as a black rat snake, but it was only because... The species has never been recorded in our area!
So, after a bit of a fighting and whatnot, I got ahold of this beautiful 4.5 foot blue racer, my first one and possibly biggest snake.
Pics: (All the while Gigi's mom was standing back looking horrified. lol)

guys
I got Drache back from the vet today - post-surgery
one large and one gigantic open gaping wound, both on the left side of his head (pics tomorrow - it's been a long day)
both of these lesions had deep pockets of infection and I am now in charge of keeping them open, deep cleaning them and pumping them full of nolvasan every other day, until they start clearing up from the inside out - really not something I'm looking forward to with anything other than grim determination to pull this through whether he likes it or not
he looks really grotesque right now
we met up with the vet at the Hamburg Pa reptile show, where I also got to meet Shannon - and I got one of her beautiful Florida blues in exchange for my last ribbon baby

ugghh
I just administered to Drache and it was no fun for either of us
the pics I took before I started are also a bit too much - pm me if you're interested
next time I'll try to find someone to take pics during because that at least would be instructive in addition to gory
for those of you as yet unfamiliar with snake pus, it's not at all like the human variety; it's more solid, a bit like firm curd, so it's not like one can squeeze it out - it needs to be dug out
"it" being right on the poor snake's head, the digging puts pressure on his throat and salivary gland, causing him to make scary croaking sounds
and all this before breakfast

Lori P
10-20-2008, 05:38 AM
Yeah... I'm passing on the pics myself right now... lol!! Rhea, what causes him to get these abcesses/infections whatever?? Is it like an immune thing with him?
drache
10-20-2008, 08:35 AM
as far as I can tell it's the same abscess rearing it's ugly head again and again, because it needed the actual opening up and cleaning out, which is what my neighbourhood vet - the one who's on maternity leave - was probably trying to avoid
the vet we lost to Pennsylvania is just way more experienced
in fact I just found out that he treats the herps of the Bronx Zoo - Sean was loading up a few from the zoo to bring to Pennsylvania
makes me feel good to have that connection, but without a car it's a bit tough
funny thing about the pics I took . . .
after I had doctored him yesterday, I felt pretty good about it
I'd gotten to the fresh blood like the vet said I should and it looked pretty hopeful
then I loaded the pics (macro close-ups) onto the computer and was totally grossed out
they don't look like he can survive this thing
it's good thing I know better, or it really would have gotten me down after all this sleep deprivation

Stefan, I think you were born with a microscope in your eye... It seems to me you know more science stuff than men double your age.
Speaking o'which... Just saw on PBS last nite about Hugh Everret (I think I spelled that right). Genuis in quatum physics - parallel universes. His son, some rock star, can't add any better than I can! Funny how genetics are or aren't.
Hugh had his theory at like 24 and was telling some guy by the name of Bols or Bowls or something like that, "with the hubris of youth," that the Bols guy was not correct (sighting of a photon affects it's movement... Coopenhagen Theory) and couldn't understand why this old coot wasn't just thrilled with his 'discovery.'
Was very fascinating and while I know squat about quantum physics I really did enjoy the program.

Stefan, I think you were born with a microscope in your eye... It seems to me you know more science stuff than men double your age.
I only know the absolute basics and a few pieces of trivia.
Speaking o'which... Just saw on PBS last nite about Hugh Everret (I think I spelled that right). Genuis in quatum physics - parallel universes. His son, some rock star, can't add any better than I can! Funny how genetics are or aren't.
Genetics play a (minor) part, but you also need to "practice". The more you solve a certain type of problems, the better you get at it.

Didn't know you did rescue, too. We've some very special people here!
I don't really do rescue - just fostering and adopting
let's say - I'm friends with the rescue
it's quite selfish - really
it's like I get to test drive animals - even some I'd never be legally permitted to keep and some I wouldn't want to keep myself
and it's nice to bring them back to the rescue all healthy looking
sometimes they do stick to me
like Bonsai, the 20+ year old corn snake with cataracts; he's got a home with me until someone adopts him, which he isn't a great candidate for
I can just give him a little more space than the rescue can, and he does feel a little less supple than a younger snake . . .

My son just informed me that research shows that magpies can recognize their reflection in a mirror. In other words, they know it is not another magpie, but that it is their reflection. :rolleyes:I thought that was interesting....
Magpies are my absolute favorite bird! Yellow Billed Magpies to be exact. When my youngest son was little he simply called them the "funny birds." They're like jays in the way they harass other animals and are just plain comical. The used to gang up on our dog to steal her dog food. A group would perch on the house and another on the fence. The fence group would swoop down and distract the dog while the house group would grab some dog food. The dog would run back to her bowl and the process would start all over again. Kept our hyper lab busy and I didn't mind feeding the birds :) Sadly they've been hit hard by west nile virus here and I almost never see a good sized flock like I used to. It's a treat to see two or three together now :(
Ok, haven't checked the rest of the board yet, and have two hungry snakes staring me down but just have to know.... Lori, what'd ya get???

Very nice, Rhea. :)
..and then something completely different.
We're supposed to hold presentations at school. The presentations will be filmed and afterwards we're going to dissect everybody's "performance". The subject can be anything that we're interested in and know well, such as a hobby, for example. Anything goes, EXCEPT SNAKES, because our teacher is afraid of even looking at pictures of them.
So, I'm looking for a subject that's going to get a stronger reaction out of her than snakes. In short, I'm a bit ticked off. I'm supposed to work with a "handicap" because she's got a problem with snakes? I don't ****ing think so.

there are lots of shocking images in the field of medicine - surgery, forensics, dissections - not to mention the effects of unsanitary conditions in third world countries
then there are spiders - how does she feel about those?

pretty stupid of her... Do your project about maggots.

Spiders have been done, she didn't ban them. My top candidates at the moment are legless lizards, caecilians or intestinal parasites.

Intestinal parasites, along with photos of UNTREATED life forms that have the later stages of this. (A Tapeworm half way out should get attention)
Stefan, You would not be the last person that happens to.
It is VERY unfair that you are prohibited from working with a subject that you are so damn passionate about.
I thought that teachers were not allowed to let personal issues interfere with curriculum?

I might do it on snakes anyway. I'd like to see her explain why it's "forbidden".

At the very least, it's unethical.
Zephyr
10-28-2008, 02:32 PM
Stefan, if at all costs you can't do it on snakes, I'd go with caecillians; one of the most snake-like creatures I've ever seen.
Or legless lizards. When I went to the San Diego zoo there were tons of people wondering why the animals in the exhibit were lizards and not snakes. :P

PITY PARTY!!
I have some horrid kind of flu/death inducing virus. I'm pretty sure I won't survive the day. It's 8:00 and I haven't even dragged out to feed the horses yet... and they are all standing at the fence staring at the house, contemplating mutiny. The donkey goes off every 5 minutes like an air raid siren.
Pity?? Sympathy?? Anyone?? Who wants to come tuck me back into bed and shower me with attention and hot soup?? Hubby has gone off to work and left me here to die a slow, agonizing death all alone....
LOLOL I'm SO WHINY when I'm sick...

oh Lori - I'm so sorry

Lori, if ittiz any consolation... For the past week at work I've been getting ssssoooo hot: sweating, clammy, hot! Then yesterday it hit: the contacted eyes got dry, I was sweating but my skin was burning, then I was freezing so bad I was shaking - even though my skin was still on fire. Yup. The fever hit.
I spent a restless night 1/2 unclad going from periods of blissful coolness to periods of being drenched in sweat.
I'm HOPING it's just a sinus infection/bronchitus that I'm prone to and not some horrid bug. We're scheduled for flu shots at work on like the 10th.
But I am worried... We a temp at work that was working so sick - STUPID BEING - she was falling asleep at work. WE had to make her go to the dr. Her breath was so labored you could hear it. Already one person at work she worked with as been out two days.
A sinus infection/bronchitus can be cured... I am a bit worried.

Pet expo today. Somewhat disappointing. A couple of people selling reptiles. 80% corns, a couple of kingsnakes, a rainbow boa, a boa constrictor, I think I saw a juvenile black ratsnake and the mandatory beardies, leopard geckos and crested geckos. Nothing interesting. At least they had a couple of Pituophis and Corallus last year, but nothing like that this year.
The most interesting thing present was a pen they had set up for ferrets. They had about half a dozen of them running around in it. Fun to watch. I think they actually had more cockroach species present, than interesting individual herps.

I guess in some ways I'm lucky
poor Drache has developed a third lesion over the past three days (rubor, tumor, dolor, probably calor and loss of function too) in his lower jaw in front of the bottom one
I'd been pestering Sean to take a look at what I'm doing, but he's been busy with the halloween adoption event - a big block party
here's where I'm lucky though
my vet came in from Pennsylvania to do the "ask the vet" booth, and I can give him Drache for the next round - I am so relieved
the vet's really into garters too, so I gave him one of the thamnophis posters - told him it's his christmas bonus early

I didn't get anything at all this year. Last year I bought a bag of pinkies, because they were cheap, but I didn't see anybody selling snake food this year. Then again, I was there early and they were still setting up their stuff. They were done when I left, though.
