Oh Gertie! I thought you had said you didn't like rats?? lol! Guess not! Cool! Aren't they adorable!

And aundrea, YES most rats LOVE to be handled and you almost HAVE to give them attention everyday. They are not like hamsters, gerbils and mice and whatnot where they can get by on their own. The ADORE people and will consider you part of their "pack". :D
If you weren't so far away I would put you down for a pair of cute little babies. But I guess you will have to go find a breeder and POST PICS when you get them!! :D

It's better to have two. And it's easy to tell male from females in rats! :D Very easy so you could easily pick out a same sex pair and wouldn't have to worry about babies! You would love a pair of males gertie!! They would be SOO much fun!! And they would have a BLAST in a 90 gallon!! I can just imagine how many toys you would buy them and how much FUN two ratty boys would have at your place!! Oh my gosh! You should DO IT!!

Last night I got to visit a couple of Chili's babies that I adopted out!
They're names are Mary and Jane, and they're growing up so nicely. They both look almost identical, although Mary is a picky eater and only 2/3 of the size of Jane. And I think they may both end up with the beautiful blue-green dorsal stripe that Chili has. I don't think any of MY babies are getting that lucky!
It's great to be able to see them grow. They've got a wonderful new home.
I also got to see the big tank I'm supposed to be getting, and meet the current occupant, Grimm. He's a 5 foot red-tail boa, and I fell in love at first sight. But unfortunately, I will be destined to only visit that kind of snake. Too big for my house!!
Next time I go to visit I'm taking the camera.:D

How many mantis do you have? I bought 3 egg cases back in June. I hatched them in a brown paper bag. OMG I had TONS of babies. I relesed them in my garden. I kept one in the house. I see the ones in the garden time to time and they are getting soooo big:eek: I didnt know they ate crickets. I buy fruit flies for Ruby. I love watching her grab them flies and eat them.

So do you know if she ate her mate after mating? :D:eek:

well..... i had 1 on tues....... but now i have seven lol....... i also caught 3 snakes yesterday......

they are mowing the huge field down below my house so i walked behind the tractor and collected all the critters i could so that they wouldn't get run over when it came back...... should be done soon though so they'll...... most of them anyways.... ;) will be released......

The mantids that hatched in my garden are nearly all gone. I have only two left, and judging by the size of them, I'm going to have to bring them in for a while when the weather turns cold. They're only about a quarter of the size of the mantids I've been finding while out walking. They hatched really late in the season.
But I have brought home 3 large ones, who have happily taken up residence in various parts of the garden. Hopefully there will be more egg sacs next spring!

My crazy self and my crazier husband decided to rip the carpet out of our front room Thursday afternoon. We had no idea what we'd find underneath, other than that we knew it was hardwood. What a job!!
Well, it is hardwood, and it looks like it's never had a thing done to maintain it since the house was built 60 years ago. It's a little rough, to say the least. And the guy who fixed up the house before we bought it knew he had no intention of refinishing the floor, so he let all his drywall compound and paint fall all over it! Denis and I have been scraping and scrubbing for two days, but overall, it actually doesn't look half bad. Anything looks better than a white carpet that's been trampled by kids for 3 years.
We're going to have it sanded and refinished in the spring.

Aundrea
08-30-2008, 06:24 PM
Ohh wow thats neat. The house we are moving in next month has all hardwood floors and the house was built in 1909:eek:

Garter_Gertie
08-31-2008, 08:16 AM
Oh, but Anji! It's going to be beautiful! Sand it, stain it, polyurathene it and you're done!

My grandmother used to wax our hardwood floors all the time. We don't have have to! Just get them looking the way you want and the poly! You'll have beautiful hardwood floors for life! Which I like with area rugs better than wall-to-wall carpet.

I think you're gonna be so happy once all the back breaking labor's done.

jitami
08-31-2008, 11:41 AM
I agree, Anji, you're going to love it! At least waaaaay more than white carpet! I know exactly how you felt about that one! I ripped very light beige carpet out all by myself knowing full well that there was only concrete underneath. I didn't care. I was so sick of trying to clean up after kids and dogs on that carpet! That was about a month ago now and we're still using just concrete with a large area rug. Hubby wants hard or laminate wood... I don't really care... I'd be happy staining & sealing the concrete and calling it good.

anji1971
08-31-2008, 06:40 PM
Oh, it already makes me SO much happier every time I walk into the room!
It's warm, cozy and golden in there now. And we did find a little area rug on sale, so it looks pretty darned good now. When we're able to refinish, it's gonna be amazing!

I understand it doesn't work on Macs

well - I've had a predator related incident due to my over-tired carelessness
assuming the cat was in the next room, got poor Boyfriend (sirtalis male) a deep gash in the side yesterday
setting the "infirmary" critter keeper on top of another tank was also a mistake, because there seems to be something personal going on between the cat and Boyfriend, resulting in the critter keeper being knocked down and Boyfriend disappearing under the piano
thankfully I managed to get him out from there without too much trouble, albeit covered with cat hair and dust, especially around the wound
after a bath with a dash of chlorhexidine and a new application of antibiotic ointment, he is now back in the infirmary, but in a safer place
it did take quite a while for him to calm down after the incident and I was a bit worried - and relieved that he wasn't further injured

I'm almost to the point of no more mammals unless they're producing snake food :) I'm not really a cat person, but I see our cat maybe three times a week... and he's a strictly indoor cat! One dog won't be with us much longer and the other one is a total PITA... 5-6 more years with her, then I don't think I'll get another dog for some time.

On the stories of snake tragedies with good endings, one of the wanderings I caught in Utah escaped (how, I can't figure out) back in early August; I was doing some homework at the kitchen table today and my ma told me to let the dog out, so I got up and took her out. She was sniffing around for a bit, and I decided I wanted to gnash on some of my carrots from the garden, so I picked some and headed back in. I didn't want to walk on the cement because it was wet from a bit of roof run off, so I started walking back on our *dead lol* grass. Then I noticed a bright piece of straw staring at me...

Do you want to know what caused this mess?

A travelling reptile exhibit, which has been heavily critcized by the herp community for the way they treat their animals (and in some cases, they've allegedly put the visitors in danger), experienced a fire that killed almost a hundred of their animals. It appears that they were storing them in a warehouse among cans of paint thinner and other flammable liquids (also nice fumes to inhale). Well, instead of focusing on the substandard conditions they were kept in, the media jumped on the risk that they might escape in such a situation.

With a little luck, they'll forget about this whole thing. And maybe I'm overreacting.

how awful
perhaps you're overreacting a tad on the media isue, but they're certainly not reacting to the right issues at all
to read about how the animals were kept, seriously pisses me off
and I am quite surprised that the improper storage of flammables was not considered the bigger issue (as I think it might have been here)

See, the way that people show the reptiles counts for about 99.9% of the audience's reaction. If you're shoving a reticulated python in somebody's face and bragging about how they can eat almost any mammal you put in front of them, you have people walking away with a fear of the animal as opposed to a respect.
When I do demos I always stress that the animal isn't out to get some one; some one's usually out to get the animal.
The media really doesn't help; dedicated enthusiasts do though.

Too funny Rhea. Well, you know, there are probably plenty of people who would jump at the wording without doing the math!!

Are you like me?? I love to do projects but always end up hurting myself. If I'm fixing fences, I inevitably end up whacking my hand with the hammer. Heck, I gave myself a black eye not too long ago when I yanked the hammer up to tug on the fence, missed, and the follow thru hit right on the edge of my eye. I can't do anything, it seems, without bruising or slicing SOMETHING. LOL How come I got no grace?? Who got my share of the grace??? LOL

I think it's the whole "sloppy-seconds" thing: no one wants to look like they were either waiting for you or to be to quick into another relationship if they know you just got out of one.
Also, sometimes the snakes don't seem to help, but that's from the masculine side of the ordeal. :p

Sounds like me too... i had my bottoms ones taken out, It didn't hurt that much, but I can handle PAIN! Then few yrs down, my upper left one came out half way, so I had that removed, then finally my last one came out half way & had to have it removed. ALL 4 of mine were impacted. Causing major jaw pain. But like I said, I never complained!

aarrgghh
Drache's abscess has reared it's ugly head again and I was scrambling to get a car to get us to the vet Pennsylvania this weekend, but it's been looking dim
so I took him to Sean yesterday, to ask his opinion and whether he thought whether whoever is filling in for our maternity leave vet, would just give him enough antibiotics to hold him over until I could get him to PA
so Sean sees the thing and just starts squeezing it like a big pimple and a lot of that cheesy nasty smelling pus came out
Sean's working on helping me get Drache a ride to PA (he knows other people who go over there), but meanwhile I've got to keep this thing under control
Sean told me to stick an q-tip with bovidine in the hole the pus came out of, to clean it out and then pack it with antibiotic ointment, after he'd squeezed the stuff out, but I swear, I couldn't get a q-tip in there
he's over five feet long and when he jerks around it's damn hard even getting close to a little hole in his head
after a while my hands become fatiqued and shaky
anyway - all I managed to do was to treat the outside
I just hope I can get him to the vet soon

I went and picked up that Dumeril's ground boa I was offered friday this morning. Not a 5 footer as the lady said... it's closer to the 4 foot mark.. but how can I complain? I got this wonderful snake, the tank, the stand... the cave and the light all for..... FREE! I think it is a female... just by looking at the tail base.. I have seen male boa's tails before and this one just does not look like a male tail to me at all. Her name is Taz, and this is the tamest dumeril's boa I have ever seen. It is a puppy dog. It is two years old.
When I got there the snake was in a bare cage with a pile of pine(yuck) shavings and a water bowl that had a thick layer of algae in it. The snake's hide was in the cupboard of the stand... along with the heatlamp which had a burnt out bulb in it. The heating pad was unplugged, and cold to the touch. The snake was also cold to the touch. I am pretty sure this was a practically forgotten about pet. I am actually pretty glad she's now with me.
It's a 30 galllon aquarium. Needless to say... the boa is now on hardwood mulch, with the heating pad in use and the lamp with a low wattage bulb. The hidey is in place, the water bowl is spotless, and there is a whole mess of stuff for her to climb on... she hasn't come out much today... she's been soaking up all that heat under the big cave!
Here she is!!!
I have no idea why there is an old belt around my boyfriends shoulders.... i didnt even see it until the pictures. i think it is the thing that he was whacking me with trying to annoy me as I took her out of her tank. It hurt!!!

Speaking of amusing :) The smaller of the two babies simply can not fish! He'd be starving out in the wild. LOL His brother ate 6 or so little rosy reds and is now basking on a branch watching his brother swim around in circles. The little guy is still trying, but has only caught one fish and that must have been pure luck! Ella on the other hand is a lean, mean, killing machine :D She's taken pinkies and worms for me with some serious hesitation... now I know what she really likes! It'll be fishy scented pinkies for the near future :)

kind or off topic, but how long can a garter stay under water??? my 2yr old male sits in the water dish for very long periods of time, with his hed under water.... it always worries me bc he seems to be able to hold his breath for over 20 mins??? he doesn't do it very often... but ever since he got lost and was found very dehydrated he has done it about once a week...... could it be because i have stopped giving them 'baths' after every meal??? idk why he does it his cage is def. not dry.......

Yep, its that time of year for some snakes to start missing meals. Just depends on the snake. Some shut down for winter even if you keep the lights on, some just slow down, others dont slow down at all.
On the soaking, its not too warm in the cage is it? Sometimes if the cage isnt real big, the cage might get a bit on the warm side, and make them soak more too.
I've had a couple garters go through streaks where they soaked a lot, for no reason that I could figure.

Something very interesting is going on, on my YouTube channel. :D

In the last few hours, the number of views on my latest video, which I posted a week ago, has risen from about 75 to 90. It took a whole week to get to 75. The strange thing is, almost 60% of my viewers are between 45 and 54 years old. "Old people" are watching the video. Why are old people watching my videos?

Say, if anyone likes like murder mysteries and such... I'm reading Lisa Gardner's newest, Say Goodbye.

There's much in there, actually it plays a MAJOR part, on spiders. Well, actually it's about spiders A LOT. The bad guy, or one o'the bad guys, is named Mr. Dinchara... Know what that spells backwards? Yeah.

Each chapter is prefaced wtih a quote from various spiderly tomes, ex. How to Know Spiders, third edition, by B. J. Kaston, 1978.

I think she's a great writer and, to me, it's a veeerrryyyyy creepy book due to all the spidery stuff.

Thought I'd let you guys know; maybe you'd enjoy it.

Hoping for good news Rhea...

drache
09-22-2008, 05:18 PM
spoke with the vet
Drache will get his abscess opened up and cleaned out right, like it should have been ages ago
as to Runty - he needs to switch food, apparently
according to the vet, if I understand this correctly, a diet of exclusively any kind of f/t fish also leads to thiamine deficiency - I guess because the freezing destroys the B1 vitamin - need to read up on that
it stands to reason that it could be supplemented, if it's not thiaminase related
all in all the news is good and they're in great hands
I love that vet - well worth the hassle of getting my snakes there
the vet here - the one who went on maternity leave - she's a wonderful vet, but not fantastically experienced with herps, and I think she much prefers not to do surgery on them
the one in who moved to PA is really really into snakes and I've learned so much from him - I miss that and I wish I could have come along for the visit

Glad to hear all's relatively well Rhea!

Kyle.... Ick... my boys have been fighting it for a couple weeks now... they get a little cough and stuffy nose and then it goes away for a day or two, then comes back when they get the least bit run down. So far they're fighting it off without getting too sick, but yeah... Ick, Ick, Ick... I feel for you!

Rhea, glad the news is not worse. I'm sorry you didn't get to go, too! But at least they are taken care of. Will Runty eat other foods, do you know? Or will it be an adventure to get him switch over?

Kyle, hope you feel better soon... I have the "fall bug" only in that I am ready fr fall to be here!!

has anybody seen this week's New Yorker cartoon caption contest?
it's got a couple of guys talking to each other in front of suburban houses
one's got a dog on a leash, the other is holding a snake that looks a lot like the leash by the tip of its tail
the snake's got its head of the ground and the tongue out - the snake and the dog are looking at each other

I'm not sure how the law works in Finland, but I'm actually thankful when it ends that way here. Saves the tax payers a lot of money... no repeated appeals, no supporting the *&^%# forever in prison, etc... of course, I wish it would never happen to begin with, but what would the appropriate punishment be for these slime? I know they're young, but they have no doubt about what they're doing and the ramifications on everyone involved.

Bravely bold Sir Robin rode forth from Camelot
He was not afraid to die, O brave Sir Robin
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin
He was not in the least bit scared
to be mashed into a pulp
Or to have his eyes gouged out and his elbows broken
To have his kneecaps split and his body burned away
And his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Sir Robin
His head smashed in and his heart cut out
And his liver removed and his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped and his bottom
burnt off and his *****...

Edit: Oh, great. You can't even say "*****" anymore. You can use euphemisms but not the technical term? :D

Well, this is what he said on the 8th:

I'm working locally all this week, so I'll be around every evening. Following that I have one more week away (in Ireland again), at the end of which I have my final 'review', which is a grilling by a panel of interviewers... if I can come up with the right answers to their questions I get to keep the job... then I'll be working from home. If I can't impress them, I'm out... either way I'll be around a whole lot more!
He hasn't been around since the 9th and maybe I'm wrong, but shouldn't he have been back last weekend?

I hear from James quite often via text messages so he did tell me when he was back. He was in Warwick last i heard lol. i know he is due back for good soon but not too sure when.

I think it was last weekend he was back but he had gone ages without seeing his Mrs and lil Molly so i don't blame him for not coming online. i hardly heard from him that weekend lol.

I let him know the other day how much everyone is missing him and he says he misses everyone too.

that's the freaky thing - it's been raining here, and coolish
Jeff got me a little container at Petlands - it's this local chain and for the most part they're better than either the big chain stores or the little local ones
even their prices are better than Petco's for a lot of stuff
I think they must give good employee discount because all the people who work there are into something
when I first got to NY I practically spent my free time at the one near my dormitory - it's where I got my first garter snakes in 1977

very cool, Amanda - can't wait to hear about the tour either
and the ribbons - are they that blue species?

I broke down today and bought a non-garter snake - bad, I know
I wasn't supposed to buy anything until next year, with the exceptions of a couple of very unlikely finds
this wasn't even anything remotely on my wish list - and I'd just talked myself so successfully out of a couple of other snakes (plus some lizards and turtles, etc) many of which also weren't on my wish list, but even some that were
I haven't paid for him yet either - I convinced the seller that the baby would be more comfortable at my house than at the store - cool, eh?
he didn't want me to get to close with the camera and I didn't want to stress him too much, but here's some pics
