When I pass away, I want to pass away peacefully in my sleep, just like my father did.

Not screaming and yelling like the other passengers in the car he was driving at the time.
You told it wrong. :D You're supposed to let the listener/reader figure out that he was driving at the time.

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, just like my father did. Not screaming in terror, like his passengers.

Not sure this is the place to post this, but I thought it was funny. That is a dog next to an eight pound rabbit!

Not that one! She is my daughter's 4H Showmanship rabbit. But the others we have cooked were tasty....

anji1971

So how does that work? If they aren't good enough for showmanship, they're dinner?:p

count dewclaw
07-27-2008, 09:42 PM
Basically, also if they are not good enough to keep as future breeders. However, my daughter has decided she really doesn't like eating her rabbits so she is looking for other ways to handle the culls. Like selling them as pets or selling them to someone else who will eat them.

anji1971
07-27-2008, 09:45 PM
I can certainly understand why that might bother her.
I've never been a big fan of "meeting" my dinner before I eat it, either. Especially if it's been a pet for a while.

count dewclaw
07-27-2008, 09:52 PM
Oh I understand, too! That is why I have been encouraging her to look for the other ways to take care of the ones that are not good enough to show or breed. I also have food allergies and I think I may be allergic to rabbit as well...I know I'm allergic to their fur!

drache
07-28-2008, 04:27 AM
I've recently considered raising rabbits for food
it was quite common where I grew up and I remember that they were tasty

Lori P

I've wanted to raise some meat rabbits, also. But my butcher pal up the road doesn't want to do poultry or rabbits, so the whole thing would be up to me. I don't think I'm ready to take that on... but bunnies are yummy....:D

My husband took care of the butchering. I don't think I could have handled killing the rabbit. I could have done the rest, but he wanted to do the whole job, so I didn't argue. :D

07-28-2008, 11:10 AM
OK guys, my herping skills need some serious improvement!!!

We were trying out the new gold pans yesterday... a little tedious for me, but relaxing at the river is never a bad thing. There's this submerged rock out in the water that I find makes an excellent seat. I'm sitting there for 20 minutes or so, when I feel something brush up against my leg  under the water. I jump three feet from the rock and scream like... well, like a girl :p Then almost instantly I calmly say, "It's a garter snake" and start laughing. Ok, so the chase is on... in the water... I'm wading about waist deep and it's swimming(way quicker than I am wading!) toward a large rock outcropping. It goes around the corner of the large rock and disappears. Now I know that garters are not great at hiding and I even tell my husband that the snake is probably just barely out of the water, just enough to think he's hidden. Sure enough, found his fat little body wedged into a crack, half his body still in the water, head sticking up swaying back and forth. Ok, so I slowly reach under the water, get a couple of fingers around his body, slowly make the grab... he comes at me quick! and I drop him.... geez louise... so the chase is on back in the water again. He heads out toward the deeper, swifter water, ducks under the water and disappears. I watched for him to come up, but never saw him. So, eventually, I go sit back on my rock and start talking to hubby while he's still gold panning... we didn't find any gold, btw  and maybe five minutes later, I feel something rub against my leg again. Didn't scream this time, just said, "he's back." Sure enough, same silly garter. My husband says, "he's just f'ing with you now" :D You'd think I'd be able to just reach down and grab it, right? Nope, he was quick as lightening swimming away, this time straight out into the swift water, head still up, around a rock cutting the current, and out of sight. All the while I'm thinking, "damn I suck at this!" :D

Sorry no pics, camera was in the car... sigh... I think it was an Oregon garter(T. a hydrophilus) but I'm not positive. Haven't checked range maps yet, but it was rusty brown in the water and a really muddled brown/grey/green color out of the water, had a very faint dorsal stripe, which was only obvious at the neck and then faded away, looked like a clear checker pattern in the water, but really muddled when out, light colored head & neck, with prominent dark stripes on his labial scales, and light eyes. Really not very attractive compared to most garters, but a garter non the less.

We later saw another smaller individual swimming down river further, but I had already changed into warm clothes for the long ride home in the topless/doorless jeep and didn't want to get wet... wimpy, huh?

Hope you all had better luck(skill) than I over the weekend!

You need my second name to find anything about me,
I´ve looked for the whole stuff about my first name ( 54 sites)
and nothing about me.

The practice is all right like it is, the first name will tell nobody who you are, but makes posting here more personal.
It´s a good compromise.
If you like to subscribe to the forum of the EGSA for example every post is signed by your full natural name, and I´m posting there too.

One of each, if everything works out. Normal female, striped male.

Nice! I like the stripes in maura's...although the normal ones are pretty cool as well...
Have ever had one before?

Stefan-A
07-29-2008, 12:36 PM
Nope, not yet. But I've read everything I've found, most of which is in either Dutch or German. :D The breeder is supposed to get a book on maura published, possibly in time for Hamm.

There's a vagrans staring at me again.

reptileparadise
07-29-2008, 12:40 PM
So...hows your dutch coming along then? :D

Don't worry. Maura are very easy to take care off! I kept them between 24 and 28 during the day and let them cool down at night. Hibernation was the same with gartersnakes. I fed them like they where garters..Actually, they are just about the same as garters. Just a bit more shy and very hissy!
The young where a bit more difficult. They only ate small pieces of fish from their waterbowl. So not difficult at all, but juuuuuuuuust a little more then most garteryoung. Also same temps, hides, everything

Stefan-A
07-29-2008, 12:46 PM
My Dutch... is getting better. ;)

Hissy is good. :D I've never heard any of my garters make any kind of sound, but the Natrix natrix I've met have often made it known vocally, that they disapprove of my presence. ;)

Garter_Gertie

Amanda! I remember the last name! From Yahoo Garters Group! You asked about posting looking to buy snakes.

GartersRock
07-29-2008, 04:26 PM
Yeah, not on there much... But I check in every now and then! ;)

I thought her comment on not wanting to deal with "irresponsible sales, like those on craigslist and such all the time" was odd... When was the last time you saw a garter on craigslist? I mentioned I would understand better if it where a more popular species. I think most people on a garter forum or list care about their animals.

But oh well!! ;)

Garter_Gertie
07-29-2008, 04:28 PM
I thought the exact same thing. I have to laugh about craigslist... I check it all the time for garters - just in case. :D

GartersRock
07-29-2008, 04:31 PM
Last time I saw a garter on craigslist... It was a year ago. A WC adult male checkered. I don't know why they didn't just let it go. *Shrugs*. So I drove an HOUR to go get it. Nice lady... Seemed to really care about the snake and gave me some cool supplies as well...

Interesting part... The snake appeared to be paralized and completely limp from mid body down... And was COVERED in large bumps from white long worms beneath the skin... I have NEVER seen a wild garter in this condition. I took him. Kept him very seperate from my collection and began to remove the worms by the vets advice. (THAT was a DISGUSTING ordeal!!) Now a YEAR later. I have finally got the last of the worms. And interestingly enough... The limp paralysis is completely gone except for the last centimeter of the tail. Huh!! I'll take it!
He ate, pooped etc completely normal the whole time.

But anyways. Off the subject just thought I would mention that.

It looks like we'll have internetacces. If not, I can always try and find an internetcafe.

If I can, I'll defenitly send regular photo updates. I really can't wait!
We'll also try to update the weblog every now and then. Its all written in dutch, but its possible to add pictures so it should work out okay.

Here's what we'll be doing.

http://crikey.web-log.nl/photos/uncategorized/2008/06/02/kaart_aussie_3.jpg
We'll head for Sydney. After a couple of days exploring the city and its surroundings we'll fly to Alice springs. From there we've booked a trip to Uluru (offcourse, we have to do some touristic stuff. I prefer herping all day and night, but I have to keep in mind I'm not traveling alone)
After Uluru we'll fly towards Cairns. The inland flights are suprisingly cheap! From cairns, we'll gradually make our way to Brisbane. There we'll stay for 6 weeks for our internship.

I do have a small list of thing I really want to find...
Shingleback skink
Bearded dragon (just to tease Kuno :p)
Strophurus ssp. I don't care which subspecies!
Nephrurus amyae
Oedura robusta
Red bellied black snake
*edit* Forgot about the acanthurus*

thats about it! Diplodactylus would be great...But I really don't want to find to many geckos...I might end up on the 6 'o' clock news...for smuggling!

@ Stefan; I'll try and I should succeed. I've been mailing with someone who slept between them! (found one 8 meters from his tent and found a Pseudonaja 5 meters from his tent!)

Stefan-A

Where do surgeonfish live? We'll probably be diving at the great reef as well. (A man's got to do what a man's got to do!)

Stefan-A

Yeah, I meant that it is easy to understand the origin of the name pseudonaja and how it's linked to naja, since both are elapids and they have a few features in common, but it's less easy to see any similarities between pseudechis and echis. :D

Oh my gosh guys!! I was talking to my good neighbor, who lives back in the woods behind us, about 1/2 mile or so. He told me that so far this year, in his front yard alone-- in his FRONT YARD-- while sitting on the steps reading, no less-- he's seen two garters, a milksnake, several black rats-- one of whom was in the process of eating a blue tailed skink-- and an eastern hognose that, when he approached it, proceeded to roll over upside down and barf a frog at him. LOLOL

I told him how I'd been searching here all summer!! But he doesn't have any dogs or livestock there, plus, he told me he'd caught a load of baby frogs at the resevoir and set them loose in his front yard where they were growing like weeds and acting as a snakie buffet. LOL I might just have to go to the resevoir with him next year and "seed" my yard with froggies-- think?

Ok, back to pouting jealously... I told him he HAS to start taking pics for me. And he told me I can go back on his property anytime, too. :-)

A friend of mine picked up these three turtles at a yard sale today-- for free. So you can imagine how well they've been cared for.

I took these pics as soon as she brought them, so no, they are not really sitting right in front of the air conditioner anymore. This is the one I'm concerned about:

Is that a prolapse?? The people told her that he's been eating and pooping, and indeed, there is poop in the tank. He dove into bananas and strawberries when I offered them. But his whole back end looks nasty and dried out...

These are the other two:

Also dove right into the fruit. I can take them to the vet early this week, but if you have any advice, pls send.... box turtles, I think, altho the two in the tank together have almost no markings on their shells. I am NOT a turtle expert at all and would like to find someone way more experienced than me to take them asap.

Thanks!!

1. We've had a box turtle, Bam-Bam, for 15 years. If you'd care to ship them, I'd love to give them a home!
Are they eastern box turtles?
2. That's definitely a prolapse. I don't have any experience with it in turtles; but the vet nearby always helps us if we have a problem with Bam-Bam, so they'd probably know what to do.

Also, you may want to make sure you don't feed him until you get that prolapse checked/fixed by a vet.
He'll be fine without the food; Our turtle brumates herself at a little below room temp and she's fine for the 5 months she does it without food.

I have an ornate boxie turtle and Yes that looks like prolapse. Probably needs to go to a vet asap. The 2 are a 3toed boxie and the other one looks like an eastern boxie. For food give them nightcrawlers, wax worms, silkworms, superworms. Veggies they can have tomatos and some fruit. Be careful with the bananas they can give them the runs lol. I am glad your friend got them turtles. that is so sad how they were cared for. I would love to have them also LOL. The 3-toed with red eyes is a male :D If you need any other help I can go to my turtle group and ask away.

Lori, you may notice I moved your prolapsed turtle thread to here.....
I thought it best in view of this newly posted thread
http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/site-feedback-suggestions-questions/3825-finding-lost-threads.html
The Urgent Care forum is pretty much a Garter Snake forum, rather than part of the more 'open' areas. Hope you understand.:)

Right then, Guys.... off to Ireland in the morning so I should go to bed. I'll try to get on-line in the evenings, failing that, I'll catch you all next weekend.:)

@Sjoerd... If I don't talk to you before you go... have a great time in Oz!;)

Thanks for the turtle info guys. I will pm you for further info. I see it's already getting lost in this thread... I agree we should keep things condensed, but I also think urgent advice is urgent advice, no matter what the critter. If I had time, I'd join a general reptile forum but I just don't... well... I guess I should make time. Can anyone recommend a good one, where the atmosphere is close to this one? Thanks!

, but I also think urgent advice is urgent advice, no matter what the critter.

I hear you Lori, but we have to draw a line somewhere, don't we? We aren't a general forum. As I said in the other thread, other members are asking for less clutter... I need to find a happy medium.:)

Alright, I know it may be time to get him to a vet, but I would like to get some ideas from the folks here. I have a rescued dog that I've had for 2 and a half years. He is approximately 9 years old and is a little guy (around 20 lbs.)

Lately, I have been having difficulty getting him to go outside just before bed. He runs out of the house into the garage, but then he shakes and won't budge. I was able to get him out by taking the ball with us, but now that fails me as well. During the day, there is no problem- he bolts out faster than anyone.

Any input would be welcome.

Did he have a bad experience that could have changed how he feels about going outside?

Aound the 4th of July he gets skittish, what with the fireworks and all. This has happened for all three 4ths that I've had him, but it was back to normal within 3 days or so. We'll have to see what happens this week.

That makes sense...the fireworks were at night. Try to show him your confidence...Dogs pick up a lot from their owners. Hopefully he comes out of it soon.

Thanks James, I'll do my best for you! Keep an eye on your mailbox...a nice pair of Varanus giganteus might come in a few days :D
Wouldn't that be a surprise after Ireland!

Lulu, I think the butt tattoo looks great (even when its placed on other areas...):p
Personally I wouldn't go for the green cobra...Colors tend to fade but its always your body and your choise offcourse!

Can I say I'm a bit nervous at the moment? I've got a interview at the university in a few hours...wish me luck :)
