Happy Independece Day to all Colonists!
Did you know Thomas Jefferson and John Henry Adams (I'm pretty sure it was those specific two; know it was for sure Thomas Jefferson) died on July 4th?
Here's today's menu, all to be done on the grill:
Fresh quartered pineapple marinated in peach preserves (I forgot I was outta honey...), water, ginger, and Ceylon Cinnamon, "Continental 00000" (whatever THAT means). ("Ceylon 'true' cinnamon has a soft, complex taste with a hint of citrus. Used in English baking for fruit tarts and cakes. It is also the cinnamon of choice in Mexido for pastries and rice dishes," thus spaketh Penzey's. Once you try Ceylon Cinnamon you'll never go back to 'regular' cinnamon, thus spaketh Gertie.)
Porterhouse steak, marniated in oil, Penzey's "Chicago" steak seasoning, and a splash of vinegar. Will be seared and then slowly cooked to med-rare.
Mushrooms and ionions for the steak. Will be done in real butter.
And last, but by no means least, eggplant - aborginnes (I TOTALLY slaughtered the spelling on that! I'm sorry, but I can't pronouce it.) - with fresh tomatoe slices, fresh sweet basil (that I've grown! :D), and provolone cheese.
BURP! :D

Please, Rhea. Ittiz just me. You're more than welcome!
Oh. I added a bit of nutmeg to the pineapple. YEAH!
And I fried up some bacon to put in the 'shrooms and onions. Couldn't help but eat quite a bit o'the bacon with the fresh, raw hamburger onions. I don't know what ittiz about the combo, but I can't get enuff o'it! :D Fortunately ittiz only the kids that's gotta put up with my stentch! :D

last night we hosted a young couple from germany who a starting on a camper trip today
Tim is the son of the family friend who first introduced me to reptiles when I was a kid
of course I had no idea whether Tim was going to be at all interested in my animals, but he actually started looking right after they put their bags down
he keeps turtles and tells me that his father, Gernot, breeds kingsnakes and keeps a lot of different turtles and a few other snakes and stuff
apparently no gartersnakes though
Tim was happy that I could lend him my field guide, since he forgot the one he'd gotten for the trip - so cool
so they're headed south and very spontaneous
anything they should not miss?

My wife and I spent the holiday R&Ring on the boat. We had a vistor swing by every day to check out the happenings at the marina. Usually Herons are rather shy, but one of the docks had 2 pink yard flamingos mounted on pilings, and the Heron was in love...
Not great pics, I was stretching it with the zoom on my camera.

Aaargh.... how can people be so careless??? How do you hit a big turtle in the road?? How can you not see it??
I found a box turtle on the way in to work, lying upside down in the road. He has been hit in the head. He is still alive, but one eye is badly damaged and he does not seem to be able to withdraw his head totally into his shell. He is strong, tho... and no external shell or body damage, just the head.
My exotic vet is not in today. My boss (equine vet) was here when I got here and I had him look at him, and he feels the damage is too extreme for survival but he did not have any idea how to euthanize a turtle with drugs. And he wasn't sure about survival, it was just his guess. He's not a reptile guy at all. He was on his way out to a horse call, so he's gone now.
I feel the turtle must be in pain. (Of course) Here are the options as I see them, please give me your input:
1. I keep the turtle dark and quiet until tomorrow and take him to my reptile vet first thing.
2. I keep him dark and quiet until I get home this evening and have hubby shoot him (that's 6 hours from now).
3. I get advice from somewhere on how to euth him now. We do have a refrig and freezer here... but would that add to his pain??
Aaaargh.... the poor guy. I can take some pics with my cell phone if anyone needs but they won't be great. Thanks for helping me here guys...

i have no idea i would try cooling him off to attempt a state of hibernation it could ease buy you time or it could put it to rest
Stefan-A
07-10-2008, 10:59 AM
Tough question.
Barbiturate overdose would do it, although shooting would do the job just as well. I wouldn't bother trying to freeze it.
Lori P

I have euthanasia solution here, but the question is, where does one inject a turtle? That's why mt vet didn't want to do it.

could try force feeding tylenol a couple pills hsould be enough and it problably wont feel a thing
Stefan-A
07-10-2008, 11:18 AM
Overdose of barbiturate
o Intravenous route– injection into the venous sinus in the dorsal midline of the tail.
o Intraperitoneal route - enter the abdominal cavity anterior to a hind leg.
o May need prior sedation (eg. with an injection of Ketamine or Saffan into the quadriceps muscle, or in terrestrial species, by inhalation of an anaesthetic gas).

Thanks Stefan. I can do IP. We'll hit him with some ketamine first to sedate him. I really apreciate it... we were thinking we could go that route, but wanted to make sure. Never injected a reptile before.

Good info to have. We seem to need it frequently here.
Lori, if it were me I'd stop his suffering. It sounds like either injection site that Stefan mentioned would be relatively easy. :(
Remember, there's no wrong answer here, just listen to your heart, evaluate his suffering, and go from there. Sorry you're having to make this decision :(

Ever have turtles whiz all over the inside of your car, trying to get them to a better place than in the middle of the road?
How about big snappers?? now there is some fun! My silly son has told more than a few people how daddy "saves turtles with his hammer" then I get stuck trying to explain I only use the handle to let the snapper bite down on it so I can drag his pre-historic Jurassic looking butt to the side of the road.

More good news. About 24 minutes ago I found out that the ****ing idiots on the property next to ours (I'd use the term 'neighbour' if that's what I consider them at this point) has used significant amounts of herbicides (Roundup) right by the border, and more importantly, right at the water's edge. In short, it's an environmental crime.
But what pisses me off the most, is that it's the only place on this little island, where you can find frogs and the occasional snake. Now these morons have managed to destroy the vegetation and the herbicides have an effect on the fauna as well. The Baltic is the most polluted sea in the world already, partially because of assholes like these people.
Somebody just expressed their concern for my blood pressure. What should I do? I've gotten a ****wit overdose, somebody please help.

oh man
I was going to pass my tea break by showing you what I'm working on, but my (free) flickr account is full and I can't figure out how to change my yahoo address to coincide with the one my credit card is billed to
anyway
I'll just figure that one out later and feed you pics down the process
I'm building a support structure for a 6'x2'x25" glass cage with sliding doors, that weighs . . . well it took five of us to heave it up the stairs (with our bare sweaty hands), and we're the approximate equivalent of two very burly guys with those suction cup handle thingies - it's kinda heavy
so my structure has to be sound and I'm framing it right into a corner
I'm doing this with almost exclusively with reused lumber, so I have to work around existing holes
also - yesterday I found to my dismay, that not only are neither the floor level nor the walls plumb
in my limited imagination, it had never occurred to me, that the corner might also not be a right angle
thankfully I had two of those boards, one of which is slated for a shorter lower level
I do a lot of sitting and staring at it, to see what else I might have to work around
the tank's gotta go on it tonight
tea break over

Ok, this is so cool. :-) (But then you know I'm easy to please!!) So last week, for the first time, I put two litters of my own home bred pinkies in the freezer. This morning, Mrs. Mordecai got some of mine on one side of her dish and some left over from Rodent Pro on the other...
Guess which ones got eaten first??!!! Yep-- mine!! LOL I felt rediculously gratified that she chose the ones I grew for her... in fact, she BY PASSED the Rodent Pro ones for mine. :D Methinks I must grow yummy mice!!!!! lol

Well, for a moment I thought my whole life was about to change.... I was checking this week's lottery results and the first four numbers out, I had! The final two numbers I was just a couple of digits out (29, I had 27 and 34, I had 32)... those digits make the difference between the £40- I just won and the £4.8 million I could have won!

No, they're going to send me one as soon as they've had time to take some. I've asked for a description regarding the coloration of the stripes, the back and any markings it may have.

hey
I got my first ever corn snake
the poor guy lost his family after 20 years
yup - he was acquired in '88
and for a snake that age he is really small, so we've named him Bonsai
he's also got cataracts
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3073/2695586680_d2c46c3c52_b.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3165/2695588506_e0a525c434_b.jpg
he had some old shed on him, so Mikhaila was giving him the snake beauty parlour treatment
Stefan-A
07-23-2008, 04:11 AM
A genuine Miami phase corn? :) The coloration suggests it (although my knowledge of corn morphs is limited) and they're supposed to be significantly smaller than the normal one. But he still looks small.
He looks skinny, too. Old age or not enough food?
drache
07-23-2008, 04:23 AM
we were wondering how come he stayed so small
he did spend his life in a ten gallon tank
Stefan-A
07-23-2008, 04:30 AM
Does enclosure size influence animal size?
drache
07-23-2008, 04:32 AM
Does enclosure size influence animal size?
not that I know, but I wonder now . . .
my thinking was more along the line that if they skimped on space, perhaps they skimped on food as well
Stefan-A
07-23-2008, 04:35 AM
I find that more plausible.
If I'm right about the type of corn, it's not necessarily the only reason. :) A lack of exercise would leave the muscles underdeveloped as well.
drache
07-23-2008, 05:01 AM
I hadn't thought about the exercise part, but of course in a small tank like that . . .
anyway - he's found his retirement home
and on another note:
after trying everything else with no luck, I broke down at last and got live minnows for my babies and all except for one ate - yippee
I'm not thrilled that their food of choice is something I have to go to the petshop for, but we'll change that in a couple of months when they've fattened up a bit
I hope that last one will come around soon
Stefan-A
07-23-2008, 05:13 AM
Good news, then. :)
My parietalis on the other hand is off feed again. Has been for over a month, if you don't count the occasional pieces of salmon she's eaten during that time. Not that I'm worried, she's been fed heavily since she came out of brumation.
infernalis

20 years in a 10 gallon tank:( It's like those holding cells in Viet Nam.
A common misconception is that regulating food will keep the animal smaller, Heard that more than once from buffoons who try to keep Pythons and Iguanas small.
""I broke down at last and got live minnows for my babies and all except for one ate - yippee""
Now there is some good news:D
Stefan-A
07-23-2008, 05:59 AM
I'm fairly sure that it does result in stunted growth both in mammals and reptiles. Maybe we're not thinking about the same thing here?
infernalis
07-23-2008, 06:13 AM
Stunted growth, poor physical development, sickly, and so forth.
The falacy is derived from fish, "they will never grow beyond what the enviroment allows"
Yes Stefan, We are talking the same thing, it sickens me and it happens every day.
I would love to stuff these PEOPLE in a 10 gallon tank and give them one slice of bread every 3 days to stunt their growth!
Now that would be amusing.

No, we were talking about different things. Your focus seems to have been on the fact that it's a stupid thing to attempt, I was thinking about whether or not it works (not if it's a good idea). Or am I wrong? :)

It works only to a small degree.
Think of this, take two identical human twins, one is fed the ideal diet, the other bread and water for a period of 20 years.
both may reach 6 feet tall, one healthy, one skinny....
The healthier one may reach an older age due to having proper nutrition for it's lifetime, the other more susceptible to disease and will be weaker.
And in my mind if it worked, there would be mini animals all over, a python the size of a garter would sell gangbusters in the pet industry, or Green Iguanas the size of an Anole?? Easily worth a lot of money.
That's why breeders are always attempting to create miniature or dwarf animals, however they use genetics rather than starvation to reach this goal.
Are we on the same page yet?
Stefan-A

Take a group of animals, keep them on a diet that just barely keeps them capable of reproducing. Continue it for a few thousand generations.

And yes, My feeble little mind thinks that will work..
Hasn't history already answered that?
Stefan-A
07-23-2008, 06:57 AM
Isn't that a form of evolution??
Indeed it is. The idea was that the ones that waste the least amount of energy on growth will may gain a reproductive advantage by being able to produce more offspring. It's the random mutations that are supposed to lead to a smaller size that are going to be difficult to predict. :D

No, they are quite varied at this site. The other one was rather dark and there are melanistic specimens there too, although I didn't see one today.

I've seen black ones, grey ones, "checkered" grey ones and even very dark brown ones in one of my best spots. Never ones without the blotches behind the head, though.

I was actually looking for the melanistics today... better luck next time, eh?

Hey guys-- anyone on here a ferret expert?? (This worked so well with the parrot questions, I just have to try again!!) We got in a ferret and I have a lot of questions. I'm reading up on them, but it's always great to talk to someone with experience in person... thanks!!!

They eat snakes
Honestly, I have no idea if that's true or not, but they're part of the weasel family. Why wouldn't they? Regardless I've always been curious about them. Illegal to own here, but seem like they'd be a fun pet :) Busy, busy, busy, little critters!

ferrets are cool, and yes they eat snakes.
I once fell for a boa named Vader who had been left in the same enclosure with a ferrit, and survived.
Vader was messed for life by it.
The idiot who did this was trying to feed the ferrit to the boa:eek:

ROFL!!!! SO bad!!!! And yes, they do eat snakes.... And also frogs, mice, rabbits, birds... actually, they pretty much eat what our snakes eat from what I've learned in my reading!! They are total carnivores. Which is one of my questions... any reason a ferret couldn't be on a f/t mouse/bird diet?? I offered this little girl a f/t pinky last night but of course she had no clue. So I want to find out about that. The processed foods contain a lot of grains and they just don't need that.
They sure are clowns... she is a master acrobat and is constantly busy, busy, busy!!! Bounces and jumps and rolls and twists all over... and her and one of my pugs, Cooper, have bonded like mad. It's really pretty funny.
I just want to learn all about them before trying to find her a home, so I know what kind of home to look for. Right now I'm not even keeping her in a cage as she's litter box trained... and she'd been locked in a tiny, tiny rabbit cage for the last 6 months without ever coming out, so she needs to run off that energy!!

Sean says there's commercial ferret food, but dry kitten food will work (higher in protein than cat food)
oh - and to keep it away from your snakes

What a question for a snake site:D
Sorry, I only know them as smelly funny acrobats that are able to make a lot of work.
Do you´ll keep them indoor or outside, Lori?

Udo, she is inside in my extra bedroom. And yes, she smells funky!!! LOL I guess you get used to it after a while. I was just trying to see if anyone on here had lots of experience and wanted to pm with me about them.
Rhea, yeah, I have the ferret food... but I always like to supplement with more natural things. Thanks SO much for asking Sean for me!!

ferrets are loved pets here too, you can find specialized German HP´s for "Frettchen" and I think at all there is an association for ferret keepers as well:D

Ferrets are among the few non-reptilian animals I could consider keeping for purposes other than consumption.

I had a friend in highschool who had a ferret. I vaguely remember a cream-coloured blur zipping all over the house. More energy than a roomful of 2-year-olds on sugar.

Ferrets are FUNKY!!!!!!! My cousin had a couple years ago and moved in with me for a while. I got up during the night once to get a drink...there are many things you expect to see when you open your fridge at 3am. Movement is not one of those things, stoopid animal must have snuck in earlier...lucky it wasn't a RATSICLE.

lol, ferrets suck!
Doesn''t matter how sweet they are towards people, they ALWAYS bite me!
No ferrets for me...
I've actually experienced ferrets that where nipped my fingers at the same moment their owner told me they didn't bite!
But that was a belgium ferret...they hate Dutch people..
