What kind of garter IS that?
ssssnakeluvr
06-11-2008, 09:25 PM
it's a red sided garter, t s parietalis. I have caught them in southeastern Kansas. I had one that had no red at all (passed away a few years back, and a second one that Scott Felzer how has), and one that had orange instead of red.

Oh boy... My parents almost killed me...
I went to a show today and brought home the only garter I could find; a medium female parietalis. Also... I saw a mixed lot of baby ball pythons for $10... I couldn't resist and picked up one. However, my parents have always told me they'd kill me if I bought a constrictor because of a bad experience with one of my old relatives. ((He had a boa and it got out once and supposedly attacked a toddler.)) So... I sorta told them it was a corn snake and that it was free. XDDD
So, I gave her, I think, a thorough look-see and found no parasites or bodily problems aside from an odd bump on her underside near the vent. I think it may be a misplaced rib or something. Do these injuries usually heal on their own?

Kyle, you're so lucky that your parents allow and encourage your interest in Garter Snakes. Obviously they recognise and respect your enthusiasm and growing knowledge of this genus.....
Why on earth would you go against their express wishes and buy a python, and then lie about it? The phrase that springs to mind.... 'betrayal of trust'. How will they react when the see a picture in a book, or lean over your shoulder while you're on the forum? I reckon they'll be pretty disappointed.

I'm the last person to criticize others for bringing home animals against parents' wishes, after all, that's how I got most of the animals I kept as kid, but it's not a very smart thing to do, and James pointed out why. How are you going to explain it when they find out?

im not saying him lying was okay, but the bad experience with the toddler was most likely bigger than a harmless ball python and found that sometimes people will have bad experience with something then think bad of everything related to that... such as my mom was babysitting some kids when she was young and they had bb guns (the metal bbs)and were running around shooting and it took a looooong time of convincing to let her get me a harmless bb gun (plastic bullets)

I figure it's the same thing with the roaches; they calm down after a while. XD
I think it's because they always imagine a python as a 20 foot, rope-of muscle killing machine swallowing a pig... But when they saw that's it's only about 10 inches long and pudgy as heck they changed their minds. XD

well......last thursday I went herping with my 2 oldest daughters. we went to an area about 15 miles from home to look for horned lizards. we found 3 short horned lizards (photos to follow later...:D) somewhere on one of the roads I hit a rock or something.....didn't seem like anything big. on our way home, the oil light comes on and the car dies. we roll into a gas station. I looked under the car and saw I had knocked a hole in the oil pan and drained the oil from the engine. we got towed back home. I patched the hole and added oil....but the car wouldn't start....the engine had seized up. on top of this, it's my wife's car....:(
insurance is covering it....the engine is probably shot...its in the shop and we are driving a rental car....so, i am in the doghouse for the summer!!!!! :( hopefully the rest of the summer goes better!!!!!

Kyle, hopefully your parents will realize that your little ball is not going to ever turn in to a 20 foot eating machine! $10 is a pretty average price, I paid 75 dollars total for 6 of my new BP's. Found the nicest little pet store just 40km away. ;) Mostly reptiles and a few rodents. Lots of cool snakes, Nerodias, black rats, Coelognathus radiatus (Elaphe radiata), two Pituophis melanoleucus subspecies, the mandatory corns, boas (Boa constrictor and Corallus hortulanus) and pythons (P. regius and Morelia spilota).. Plus the lizards, frogs, invertebrates and tortoises.

Captive born (i.e. "mom" was caught gravid), maybe? Either that, or they're cheap because it's the only way to get rid of them. Green anacondas are one of the largest species and definitely the heaviest in the world. And they're water snakes. Rhea, she is beautiful! Congrats! How is the blue ribbon snake????
I kept meaning to tell you guys this, and you reminded me. One of my friends who lives on the York river has been INUNDATED this year with black rat snakes. I mean, you can literally stand in her yard and every few minutes see one move. They are in the rafters in her barn!!! She has been furious because they've eaten all her barn swallows, which she babies. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting to bring my camera over there (she's close to where I work, not where I live so I've been stopping by on the way home from work).
She said they've never had so many before. Wonder what that's all about???

whenever conditions favor, population bursts are common.
Once they have wiped out all the food supply, they will either move on or pass on.
Nature works in cycles, one harsh winter will wipe out a huge number of snakes, the food source now has very little predation, so the food prey will have a population explosion.
Then the surviving snakes will produce litters, with all that food the babies have no competition for food, so the mortality rate for the babies will go down, allowing the population to explode.
The snakes will wipe out all the food, and then the cycle can repeat.

But Wayne certainly has a point.
Just thought I would offically share since I cant seem to get around to posting photo threads.. *rolls eyes*
In two weeks I've gotten:
2.3 Wandering Garters, 3 are possible hets fer hypermelanistic with a bolder checkered pattern and yellow stripe, 1 is the same but not poss het, and one is that reduced pattern steel grey girl I posted.
0.1 Female Checkered A very nice one at that!
0.1 Oregon Red Spotted
1.1 Asian Vine Snakes, Aheatulla Nasuta, rear fanged, skinny little binoculer eyed, cool little snakies. =)
1.1 Redstripe Ribbons. Gorgeous CUTE guys. =)
And I 'aint stoppin there! lol!
I will be purchasing 0.3 Adult Female Puget Sounds to go with my male, and hopefully 1.1 of those cute little flame babies. =)
And I am still looking for 0.1 Western Ribbon and 1.0 Oregon Red Spotted. *hint hint* =D
But I am just super excited because I am finally in the position where I can do this breeder thing. lol!
Right now I have I think... 3 gravid garters? Two wanderings and a checkered? Just waiting "patiently". lol!

Some of you will know that over the past couple of weeks I've been searching for 'The Mythical Beast' Vipera berus (Adder). Well, today I got one!
I went to a known Adder site in North Wales, in the company of the North Wales reptile and amphibian 'recorder'. The weather was all wrong, very high winds, a bit too cool, occassional drizzle. But despite all this we found 0.1 Vipera berus (gravid and full of food), 0.5 Zootica vivipara and 0.0.4 Bufo bufo... Result!
The Adder photo is utter rubbish as I only had a brief moment to fire off one shot before she moved away into the undergrowth (I didn't want to stress her in her 'condition')... but I'm posting it anyway!:D

Thanks so much to all of you, you have been so very kind.
i am hoping and praying that it is just a scare, the last operation took a lot out of my mum and it took a full year for her to recover from it.
cancer is such an evil disease and so very aggressive. the kind my mum has comes from a rare form of inherited polypsis, the polyps grow through the entire length of her intestine and colon, they also grow in her windpipe. all the women in our family have the polypsis, the doctors just dont know what it is that triggers them to go cancerous .
just bear in mind everyone that life is very precious and never take your health for granted.

I'm famous here for picking up a bass guitar!!!!!!
a couple years ago my brother came out for a visit. we walked to a nearby store. on the way back I found a bass guitar on the parking strip along the street near my apartment. I grabbed it and took it home. there was a little damage to the body, couldn't hook up an amp. but the rest was ok. the next night the news reported a murder a block down the street from where I lived. they said a man was beaten to death cuz a friend didn't like the price he was being charged for a little bag of weed. we didn't hear what the weapon was. a week later, while my wife was working as a dispatcher for the sheriff's office she heard the murder weapon was a guitar. she called the city detective. they caught the guy and he confessed, but they didn't have the murder weapon. she said "do you want it?" it was sitting in my living room!!!!! we turned it over to the detectives that night!! I had no idea it was a murder weapon, there was no blood on it! now I am banned from picking anything up off the side fo the road unless it is work related or a live reptile!!!

I am lost, just before I typed this, Gertie had said "I like drums better" am I hallucinating?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now envision this Gertie, A drummer and a bass player NEED each other.
Well, Ok if you like rock music anyways.....
If you have ever been to a concert, the Bassist and drummer need to be in tune with one another.
Their mistakes are the ones that will get noticed first.
As classic bands age, I have seen vocalists forget the words to songs THEY wrote, but if a bass player, or drummer loses place in a song, it gets noticed real quickly by everyone!
Even master drummer Phil Collins will occasionally break a stick, he's fast, he can grab another, but not before the interruption is noticed.
Guitar players can snap a string, and get away with it, a bass player on the other hand......
Back to the classic bands, look close on stage whenever there is a concert on PBS, Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, etc.. all have some very young bass players and drummers hired on to help out.

Lori P
06-27-2008, 08:16 AM
Good heavens!!! Sorry to hear that Stefan, that's insane... well, if the snakes' digestive systems are in good health and they have a good bacterial balance, maybe their own bodies will fight off the e coli... if they were any other animal I'd say load them up with probiotics, but I'm not sure how to do that with a snake... keep us posted.

06-27-2008, 11:38 AM
I don't know about the snakes, but I've seen what it can do to people!! That happened in a town a few hours from us a couple summers ago. Made a lot of people very ill. And pissed, when they found out it was known and not shared with the public right away.
Do you think it's possible that the snakes would be able to fight it off better than us? I'm wondering, because in the wild they drink water from ponds, puddles and god-knows-what, and I'm sure there must be all kinds of bacteria in some of those water sources. Maybe their digestive systems would be able to handle it better?
Then again, being captive born, maybe not. Sorry, guess I'm not much help am I??:o
Stefan-A
06-27-2008, 11:42 AM
I have no idea. Apparently people haven't been getting sick (yet), so it doesn't seem to be that serious, but I'm not taking any chances with my snakes.

anji1971

I don't blame you! I'd be immediately using bottled spring water for the snakes and myself!

Okay, so maybe I'm getting a bit dramatic there, but really, I've had the most horrible experience.
For the first time in several years, I went ***swimsuit shopping***. I must now face a startling reality...........
I'm getting old. Swimsuits don't look good on getting old people. My workouts only work on size, not spider veins. This is very disconcerting. And my husband thinks it's funny. I'm not sure whether or not I should have married him, think a plastic surgeon would be more beneficial now.

it's a good thing I get sunburned then
hanging out in a swimsuit is out for me anyway - they're strictly for swimming
here's my story of the day:
my brother and his wife are visiting from germany
they're staying at a hotel because they know me a little
but they did come to our house today
he pointed out that I'd have so much more space in the living room, if I didn't have so many reptile cages in it
of course I enthusiastically agreed with him
and then in my mind I wondered what I would do with all that space - probably fill it with reptile cages
what do other people do with their living rooms?
some more space for books would be kind of nice, but other than that . . .
I guess other people have coffee tables and entertainment centers

And if I ever see my dream, I want to enclose one whole corner of the living room with glass, we have 2 large sliding glass doors (surplus) I am going to remove the panels, and frame up a "Jungle room" to fill up with tall plants like mini trees, and let my Asian snakes have it.

Straight in the front door-- Harry and Hedwig's (hoggies) home on top, fire bellied on bottom.

Turn right-- garter's home.
http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/Living_room_to_the_right.jpg
Corner-- ball's home and Tatiana's tank on top of the bookcase.
http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/Living_room_corner.jpg
In front of the fireplace (which we don't use due to chimney damage, and which one of these days, we'll fix, lol)-- Desdemona's home and Eddie Lizzard's home on the desk.

So yeah, my living room is pretty overtaken too. :-)

It was a wonderful weekend and I was going to tell you a bit about it and post pictures but we've come back to some terrible news... One of our cats, Milka had been hit by a car this morning and died. :(

Rhea, I think those "other people" who have space in their living rooms are not reptile people. Looks like most of us have living rooms full of tanks and critters!

unless you are me and you jsut have a whole SNAKE ROOM complete with sealed off doors wall cages snake racks and a higher temperature range than the rest of the house :O
Whenever me and eddie get our own place, we are most likely going to dedicate my hobby to a finished (carpeted, painted, lighted, etc) basement... because that will give me the room I want to build a cage for my future male albino green burmese python which I simply have decided I must own some day.

Actually, a guitarist is his own best friend!
Bassists and drummers feed off each other.
I haven't figured out keyboardists yet...

I think almost any instrument can do an awesome stand-alone solo if you know how to play the daylights out of it.
I stand alone and play guitar all the time. To bad no ones there to hear it. :)

Thank you everybody. It really does suck! Whoever thought of this stupid pleasure/pain balance?
My youngest went for a week's residential trip to Wales this morning, it was so hard for him to go and now he's been on the bus for an hour I just want to run after it and give him a cuddle.
(Thank you for moving this, James. I didn't really want to taint our lovely weekend thread, but I couldn't think straight last night)

It's a beautiful room, Lori! I bet your visitors just want to come in and watch the snakes all day.
Just wanted to share a picture of my lovely Milka with you here, if that's ok.
She's the little tiger on the left. She was having a cuddle with her older daughter, Rosina, while she was in labour with the next set of siblings. :)

that sounds fantastic
as as it turns out - I actually do know how to take care of horses, sheep, geese, and chickens, so some goats and turkeys are probably not too much of a stretch
but my house comes with pesky humans

Yes, we do. Rosina, who's also in the picture, still lives with us and since January we also have one of Milka's grandsons, Janosch. It's lovely to think there's still a little bit of her living on. :)
Rhea, you poor thing! Having unpleasant house guests is not nice. How long will you have to put up with them?

I don't think you have anything to apologize for, Lulu. You didn't do or say anything wrong at all?! Maybe it's this thing that often happens when you meet new people, that you get super conscious of the things you said. I had a couple of moments like that myself, so lets just be assured that noone thought badly of anyone. :)
And thank you again for all your kind words. It's not easy not to feel you're being punished for having had a nice time, but I've had some invaluable support and it's made a sad situation much easier to cope with. You are good people! :)
