I know what you mean about not being bothered! I remember as a teenager I wouldn't even take out the garbage if I didn't have my hair and makeup done!
Now I wear makeup mainly when I'm going out (which is rare) or a couple times a month just because. I just find it a hassle to fuss with it every day, and then clean off again every night.
And it's just not practical for workouts, or running through the fields chasing snakes!;)

James, seriously sorry to hear about your job.... job stress is just awful... Jamie runs his own electrical business, and after 3 years of trying to make a go of it, he's in the process of deciding what to do... the buisiness isn't where we need it to be but to just give up now would be heartbreaking... it's soooooo hard.
But the Llama Man thing is a VERY good look for you... it could work... don't forget your theme song! www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/llama.php (http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/llama.php)

I hope Jamie doesn't have to fold his business, it is heartbreaking to watch your enterprise fail after you've put so much into it. Having said that, you need to know when to cut your losses. Good luck with that decision, Lori. I know how difficult such choices can be, I have run my own business in the past... a few times. In fact I may start a new venture now that I'm 'available' again.

someone sent me a link to a fear of snakes study that I found irritating because the study presumes that (for survival reasons) people have more of a need to be aware of snakes and spiders than other animals and things
the article even stipulates that humans had to be extraordinarily lucky to survive as a race, unless they could quickly spot snakes and spiders.
Evolution Of Aversion: Why Even Children Are Fearful Of Snakes (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080227121840.htm)

Thanks for the link, Rhea. I remember reading an article on the issue some time ago.
The local pet shop's owner just got awarded for running an ethical pet shop, donated 1/3 of the prize to the Finnish animal welfare associations. Not really surprising, they won't even sell a danio without making sure your aquarium is big enough and has the right water quality. Too bad they don't sell reptiles and related stuff anymore. They still have frozen mice, though.

Well, it's probably not that dramatic, but little stresses add up!
My daughter is starting with what I suspect is bronchitis. My snake is puffy and oozing. I had to work a 10 hour day so I couldn't do anything for either one of them.
Now the clinics are closed, the vet is expensive, and I am exhausted.
The server for thamnophis.com was down for several hours over here, so I couldn't get on the forum for far too long.
And to top it off, some stupid people down the block thought it would be a wonderful idea to take in feral cats all winter, let them multiply, then release the whole lot of them this week when it warmed up. I arrived home to find 4 cats in my driveway, which all promptly took off into my backyard when I stepped out of the car. Spent 20 minutes chasing cats around screaming like a banshee. And the Humane Society is closed at this point too. So I really wish I had one of Stefan's guns.
Sorry, I am not really a cat-hater, but I don't need a yardful of flea-ridden, yowling , pooing-in-my-garden, wild animals, either.
I think I'm done now............are you sorry you asked yet, James?:D
adamanteus
04-25-2008, 07:46 PM
Actually Anji, don't get me started on cats.... Our (relatively) new cat decided it would be fun to destroy the flowers in the vase on the sideboard. I explained through gestures and violence that he should leave them alone. I was awoken a while ago (it's nearly 3AM here) by a crashing noise, and came down stairs to find petals and water everywhere! My wife has forbidden me from killing him, so I stuffed his stupid face in the puddle he left on the floor, and threw him out of the house. If I hear him cry to come in....he's dead!

Thanks for asking, Anji. My daughter is doing really well. They did not put a cast on her arm because they want her to move her elbow to keep it from stiffening. She has to wear a sling, though and no running for 2 weeks. After that they may let her run, but no hurdles and no triple jump...she's not happy about that! Well, we've had a couple of really rough nights. It seems that's when the choking cough hits, and neither of us have slept much. my friend Katherine told me a funny story that happened with her 6 year old daughter
they were standing in front of a poster advertising a benefit event, featuring the screening of an award winning documentary about a woman with cancer that had been produced by one of the parents at the school on a very low budget
there was a picture of the woman on the poster and she's bald
I don't know what the precise wording was, but Liv studied the poster very seriously and then turned to her mom and said "mom, I hope you don't ever have to get one of those low budget haircuts"

I've been messing about with 'PhotoBucket' (never used it before), and with a lot of help from 'The Google Meister' I've been able to upload some video. My problem was my camera records DVD, which had to be converted to video....blah, blah, blah....
Anyway, Stefan sorted me out so if you'd like to watch four and a half minutes of T. s. concinnus doing absolutely nothing at all, here's your chance!:D

Hi all-- I picked up this guy out of the road on the way home. He's been hit by a car. I called the wildlife rehabbers in my area and there is NO-ONE in our area doing reptile re-habbing!!! The nearest liscensed reptile rehabber is in Northern Va. I'm so surprised!!! I also called to see if my vet could see him but he's out of the office today.
For those of you that know turtles-- are these injuries usually fatal or do you think he has a chance?? The shell is broken just along the front in a couple of places and one front leg appears useless. He is still alive, so I'm looking for an idea of if he could be mended or if he should be put out of his misery.
He is in a small tank, on papertowels, inside of a dark blue tub with a blue heat lamp on half of the tank. So he's dark and warm, for what it's worth. I snapped these pics quick as I didn't want to disturb him more.

Repairs to injuries like this are often done with fibreglass..... I don't know, Lori. It looks pretty grim in that second shot. Do you think there might be much internal damage?
Stefan-A
04-30-2008, 03:58 PM
James, the lighting was excellent in that video. It took me a moment to realize it wasn't shot outdoors. :D
There's a lot more going on in the radix video, though. ;)
adamanteus

Same here! The original is pin sharp, bright, colourful.... but what you get to see on PhotoBucket is a bit poor... it even distorts the image slightly (compressed vertically and stretched horizontally).

Hmm... Seeing as the shell is part of the turtle's body, and is basically a series of bones, I'd say it can be healed. You'll have to use some sort of EXTREMELY strong bonding agent and re-connect the two pieces of shell, using some sort of siphon for drainage while reconnecting. Keep him VERY sterile. If an infection gets in their he's doomed.
adamanteus
04-30-2008, 04:04 PM
I don't think 'home surgery' will work on this one. I think it's a job for a professional.
Zephyr
04-30-2008, 04:07 PM
Well, if there's a lacking in professionals, there's not other choice. I believe I've seen this performed on a tortoise before... They used an upper support as well as the bonding. Is he moving or does he seem miserable?
Lori P
04-30-2008, 04:10 PM
He does not move. He will relax his back legs and tail out, but then if you go near the tank he pulls them back in. On front leg moves, but the other is limp. His head cannot emerge unless we can move that broken shell.
I have no way of knowing about internal injuries.
What do you think the pain threshold is... think I should put him down or let him seet over night and get him to the vet tomorrow if he's alive... I don't want him to be in agony...
adamanteus
04-30-2008, 04:13 PM
Lori, of course he must be in agony. That second picture looks as though there is some organ damage.... I know what I would do. You can't just 'glue him back together'.

What do you think the pain threshold is... think I should put him down or let him seet over night and get him to the vet tomorrow if he's alive... I don't want him to be in agony...IT looks pretty gruesome, but, correct me if I'm wrong, there doesn't appear to be a lot of external bleeding. This may be because it's all internal, or it's just the shell and part of the arm connected to it that's cracked.
adamanteus
04-30-2008, 04:20 PM
just the shell.
Kyle, there is no 'just' about the shell..... It's not a lizard in a box......
I don't mean to seem harsh, but to put this one right, you'd have to have a very good knowledge of medicine and Chelonian morphology. The spine is fused to the inside of the carapace...... that is clearly severed. The organs are connected by supportive tissue directly to the inside of the carapace. This guy's in a mess.

04-30-2008, 04:22 PM
Lori i would do what james suggested, out him out of his misery
Zephyr
04-30-2008, 04:25 PM
I would wait til tomorrow and see how's he's doing. If in the morning he's either dead or in even more obvious misery than he is right now, I would euthanize him.
However, if he's observably the same, you can concur that there isn't a large amount of internal damage. Obviously, if his bodily functions cannot keep him through the night, then there's massive internal bleeding...

Speaking of 'the ancients'.... who was it that had a silver nose? Was it Galileo?
no - it was the evil villain in a movie titled "Cat Ballou" with Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin, and a drunk horse

you know what this is?
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3050/2473784546_00ab2faa2b_b.jpg
my nemesis - that's what - the evil poke weed
last year I had some towering above tall people all along these stones
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2261/2473030977_8facebfb68_b.jpg
I dug them out from under that stone plate that's now sunk a little
I've been keeping my eyes on this area and I swear to you, that healthy looking sample on the right was not there last night
I did work on it this morning and this is all I got
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3207/2473845630_0183dfbebd_b.jpg
and this is where the rest is

it's that pale thing disappearing in the dirt under the walkway
and no - I'm not going to dig under there
I'm considering injecting the stump with distilled white vinegar
any thoughts on that?

I'd try the vinegar first, if you're not into chemicals. But as LeAnn said, Round-up usually does the trick.
I hate weeds, I fight a losing battle against them every year.
Nice hosta, though!;)

Mouse, beans, corn, peas, two types of chili sauce, teriyaki sauce, pickles, cheddar, sunflower oil, a can of energy drink, a tube of roe spread and four and a half bottles of Coke.. I bet I can make something delicious out of that. :p

Oh and I also have a kilo and a half of spaghetti, a can of stroganoff, a can of pea soup, a can of tuna, two cans of mackerel in tomato sauce and a third bottle of chili sauce. And a box of Uncle Ben's basmati rice. :D And a bottle of ketchup.

My camera broke today, while I was trying to take a picture for the photo competition. It just displayed a message saying 'zoom error'. Nothing I tried would make it work, not even the minor adjustments with the claw hammer that I finally resorted to.
So now I have a new camera.... I haven't tried it out yet (not properly) but I'm hoping it will be a little better than the smashed one...I mean old one!

It's another Fuji.... Finepix S5700. (I can't afford the Canon EOS 400D that I really want, now that I'm 'between jobs')
I think it's a pretty good camera though, excellent (48X) zoom. No doubt you'll get the opportunity to judge it very soon!

Oh Rhea-- poke weed-- the bane of my existance!! We are OVER RUN with it and nothing, nowhere, no how eats that stuff. Not the goats, not the cows, nothing. And it's so pervasive!!! I hear it's good for humans to eat when it's very small... but I figure, if even the goats won't touch it, neither will I!!!!

I had more dairy and veggies in there yesterday, don't know what happened to it. :D
Seriously, I drink at least a litre of milk a day. :)
