LONDON (Reuters) - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 shook parts of Britain on Wednesday but officials said there were no reports of anyone being killed or serious damage. The quake struck about an hour after midnight and many people in the capital London and other areas said they had been woken up by the tremors. Quakes are uncommon in Britain and Wednesday's was the strongest for nearly quarter of a century.Quake shakes Britain, no deaths reported | U.S. | Reuters (http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSL2716879920080227)

Hah!! I did that to my cat when I was little, too............it survived without too much emotional trauma, and I only got a mild scolding.
Apparently they use them to judge whether or not they can fit their bodies through gaps between stuff. So just listen for yowling to tell you kitty got stuck somewhere until the whiskers grow back.:D

Well, I'm off to a great morning..........the furnace is on the fritz! Guess it stopped sometime during the night, so we woke up a little chilly.

Okay, what the hell going on? It's been too quiet here for the last month or so. I'm practically doing monologues here.

I noticed that too, it has been quiet recently. Maybe there is a direct correlation between the increase in non-Garter related posts and the gradual 'drifting off' of a few of our members?
Although there have always been threads/comments about other reptiles or just general 'stuff', that element seems to be growing.... recently I've noticed the forum becoming less Garter related and more of a general reptile forum. Maybe some of us are losing interest in this other stuff.
Just a thought.

I'm still spending a lot of time with my garters
after all I have more of them than everything else combined
there's nothing truly news-worthy right now though
I mean - Sammy's scar tissue impaired shedding was it
the babies are growing . . .
there are questions and issues brewing in my regarding the coming season, and all of them are garter related
not to worry - once I get them clear in my mind, I'll trouble you all with them
and I like the social stuff too

I'll try.
Seeing as my precious male died... *God rest his scales...* My parents are willing to buy me a pair of any garters I come across at the show. Normally, there aren't many garters, and occasionally a sickly albino checkered comes up, but if I can't find anything there, I'm ordering 5 wildcaught florida blue sirtalis sirtalis and similis. I've yet to figure out the ratios, but I'm getting a pair of one and a trio of the other.
EDIT-
Just checked the guy's prices, and I can actually get a trio of each! :D

we're ripping a crappy built-in wardrobe out of Mikhaila's room
why on earth did they have to use sheetrock???
anyway - it's gonna be medium fun level
I have to run out to fetch some live minnows for Mesa
then we'll move some garters around, clean some tanks, feed some babies . . .
either today or tomorrow we'll pick up our uromastixes (? plural?)
and we're also planning to go slot car racing
full weekend, huh?

between snowstorms here, just got through blowing 6 inches out of the driveway, getting another 5-10" tonight. Just checked Chloe (dog) for multiflora rose thorns (rabbits love to hide in them and she loves to sniff out the rabbits) only one of the nasty little things in her back, don't seem to bother her, guess dogs are just a little more stoic them people. Going to go bake some bread now, it's that kind of day. Checked the sunroom for snakes the other day (some of you know what I am talking about:D). Nothing yet. Enjoy the day everyone.

Zephyr
03-08-2008, 01:13 PM
Woo! Just got back from the show. No sign of any garters, but I picked up an adorable little female butter corn snake and some silk worms for the beardies.
However...
MY dad saw an old colleague from work at the show, and he has a 2 foot female albino checkered garter who doesn't eat alot, and he was wondering if I'd like to trade a corn for her. HECK YES.
I'm offering the female Miami phase who's a little *****. XD

drache
03-09-2008, 05:55 AM
good trade, Kyle
and Terry
I wish I could be up there is the snow
all we get is rain rain rain
and I'm sick again - sheesh
so I couldn't get myslf to treck to the petshop to get minnows
so I tried feeding Mesa some f/t minnows and salmon strips, but she wouldn't go for it, so I have to make the trek after all
the problem is that the mta uses the weekend for repairs, so what would ordinarily be just a train ride, now becomes a train ride, switching to a shuttle bus, and then switching back to the train
or, alternately, a train ride and a 15 block walk
oh, maybe it's not raining today
I just have to remind myself what a wimp I am compared to Shackleton and his guys

So sorry you lost Velvet, Rhea. I'm glad he passed quickly and got to spend the last of his life with someone who cared for him.

Sid, also sorry on the finch. Too sad.

We had to put down one of our client's miniature donkeys yesterday-- I happened to be riding with the vet-- and it was sooooo hard. It's the first time I've witnessed a little donk being euth'd and it really got to me, I was crying as hard as the owner... I know my poor vet was seriously regretting his decision of a ride along partner yesterday. lol I couldn't help it, I adore my own donks and have not ever thought about the eventuality... I came right home and hugged them to pieces. It wouldn't have bothered me so much if it had been one of the horses, I suppose because I've seen so many horses euth'd. The tiny little donkey was just realllllllyyyyy hard.

Lori, how's the horse doing, by the way? The one that got impaled.

Lori P
03-15-2008, 07:59 AM
He did not survive. :-( The branch had punctured into his hip joint, and an infection formed in the joint that they were unable to get to to treat (it abscessed and sytematic antibiotics did not reach it). He was colicking from the stress and they had to make a decision to try and send him for surgery (upward of $8,000 and no guarantees) or let him go, so they let him go. He was 26 years old and had some other health issues so it really was the best decision. But the whole thing was so unbelievable... no-one thought it would turn out to be a mortal wound. An unusual wound, sure, but not mortal.

some people really like that tarnished look

my day has been lots of fun
I"m only just beginning to come down from the emotive part
it started brightly enough with my attempting to treat a snake with acupuncture for a neurological problem that we think may stem from an injury (it's a rescue)
I'm not sure whether the acupuncture is doing anything, since I'm very much improvising

the big crisis of the afternoon has been the cat eating two Ibuprofen that had been discarded into an empty fish salad container, slated for the bin
the cat is now at the vet's, hooked up to IV to the tune of an entire mortgage payment and I feel guilty as hell for what he has to go through

he'll be fine I think
I went to visit him and it was hard because he sort of shrank away from me at first
he's been poked with needles and has had tubes stuck down his throat and all that . . .
after a while I had him purring and then it was hard to leave

Lori P

Ooooh Rhea I'm so sorry... it sounds like you caught it in time tho and he is in good hands. I hear ya on the vet bill... sigh.... just repeat to yourself over and over, "it's only money... it's only money..." lol That's what I always tell Jamie.

Sending you lots of prayers and good karma that the kitty will pull thru. Hugs!!

My co-worker Kerry is trying to quit smoking; she's been thru everything, even hypnosis, to no avail. But now she's trying a newer drug... can't remember the name of it... starts with a C, I think. Today is her 8th day on the drug and the first day they don't allow you a cig. I'm thinking I should call in sick. LOL!!! I can't imagine how hard it is to stop... I've smoked on and off but have never gotten addicted. Very lucky I guess.

drache
03-20-2008, 06:27 AM
I've quit a few addictions and smoking was the hardest
even now, 20 years later, there are still parts of it I miss - something about the hand mouth thing and sucking in the smoke, though not at all the smoke itself
I think possibly quitting heroin may be easier, because at least you're not expected to function, whereas when you quit smoking, you not only have to function, but the support is minimal and you're not anything special afterwards

anji1971

How true. And I wonder if more smokers would be able to quit if they actually could take 'rehab time' off for a week or two, so they could make it through the initial withdrawal and not have to function.
And some of the drugs out there to help quit list headache and mood swings as side effects, as if one needs more of that when trying to break the nicotine craving!

good news
Drache, my PI king, appears to be well again
I'm not sure I posted about his abscess and he daily batrin injections and mouth swabbings he so hated
anyway
he was still a little puffy after the course of treatment, but since he had had a huge swelling before, leaving the area distended, and was obviously going to shed, I wanted to wait until after the shed to see whether he needed another round of antibiotics - whatever it was that worked on the culture
he shed today and there isn't even any of the residual puffiness that was still there before the shed
I'm so glad, he's all well

Stefan-A
03-21-2008, 09:06 AM
Okay, so my parietalis has shed twice after brumation but she hasn't really grown in lenght since, well, last summer. She has however put on a bit of weight. She was about 132 grams before brumation, now she's 163. I better put her on a diet.

And WHY am I up at 4-something am? Well, glad you asked...

Because my good neighbor awoke me at 3 am to let me know my horses were up at her place!!!! Aaaaaaaargh! !!!!! I had let them out to graze-- closed the gate at the top of our drive as always. Been doing this ever since I got horses-- letting them out to wander the yard and up and down the drive to graze. Well, apparently, Gunny (the wild mustang) caught wind of the gelding and two mares she has (one is in raging heat) and he led everyone around the gate by going down thru the woods and up to her house-- again thru the woods-- and her house is right on the road. Thank god tho they were only interested in her horses and never went to the road.

The donkeys stayed here. I love the donkeys.

My neighbor and her husband had lead ropes on two of my guys and were leading the whole lot of them back to my house. I am praying that her horses are ok (they were runnng around in their tiny paddock like crazy; her fences aren't done yet.) She hasn't called back tonite to say anything is wrong but I'll check with her first thing. One of her horses is a high dollar show horse, so please don't let anything be wrong with that one!!!

And I have horses.... why????? Snakes are good... even when they escape they don't generally cause too much damage... lol

Lori P
03-29-2008, 06:35 AM
We'll see how the story unfolds. My impression is, the owner of the snake was carting him around in the car for some reason and stopped at Walmart, and then the box was stolen. But who knows what they'll eventually turn out to be the truth. I'd like a description of "box"-- do they literally mean, a cardboard box?? Or are they just calling the container that?

anji1971
03-29-2008, 07:30 AM
Yikes!! Fer-de-lance are extremely dangerous, and from what I've heard, the worst thing is that their bite is practically painless, so many people die from it before they even realise they've been bitten!!
Apparently in their native habitat they are one of the top causes of death!

ssssnakeluvr
03-29-2008, 11:30 AM
jeez.....the snake owner wasn't too smart in stopping off to do some shopping while transporting that snake....needed to get to point a from point b right away to avoid something like this. gives us snake owners a bad name. the genius (much sarcasm there) that stole the snake just might show up soon....at a hospital or dead!!!!

I really expected to hear something about it today, but there is no update. And when you click on Wavy Tv's home page, it doesn't even mention it. So they are either keeping it quiet for some reason, or they found out it was a hoax... last night they said the local hospital, Walter Reed Memorial, did not have the appropriate anti venom, the closest was in Florida. But that's the very last I heard about it. Even if it was a hoax, I'd think they'd bring charges against who did it for wasting the police's time, right?

Thank you, Lori. In fact, thanks to all of you for your kind words, PMs, texts etc. It helps to know you're all here. I've been watching the forum on and off all day, as I often do on a Sunday.... I just don't know what else to do with myself.

All you can do is keep going, one hour to the next. There's no way out of what you're going through... there is just one day after the other. Talk to us, yell at us, cry to us, or just come here to find a way to laugh. And don't let anyone tell you how to deal with your grief; it's yours.

We luv ya.

This thread has always been so up-beat in the past.... I really don't want to spoil that for you all, so let's change the subject.

Last Thursday Molly met her first millipede!

And her first Beardie!

All concerned were very brave!!:D

Looks like Molly's first encounters were pretty good. She seems to be concentrating while holding the beardie.

I know, LeAnn! Sticking her tongue out is her new habit!
I'll beat it out of her soon!:D

so cute... but I don't think I would enjoy holding a milipede! :)

I like to encourage her to respect these animals, but not to fear them needlessly.

It's great to expose young kids to all the different critters out there so they're not afraid of them. Molly is very brave, I don't think I could hold one of those millipedes either!!
By the way, those colourful ponytail holders are pretty darned cute on her!!

Anybody here keep Elaphe dione?

Lori P

Had to go look them up... very very nice looking and they sound fun!

Elaphe dione site (http://www.elaphedione.nl/index.htm)

Yeah, I'm sort of toying with the idea of getting an Elaphe dione or a Zamenis situla. There's a person reasonably close to my home town, who has bred both.

But Stefan.... aren't they just another Rat Snake? (Well, obviously situla is something a bit special, but.......)

Stefan-A

Nope, that would be Pantherophis spp. :D Of course they're (E. dione, Z. situla) no garters, but..

I've been a member on this forum for a little over a year now. In that time I've shared all the day to day ups and downs of my life with you guys. I'd like to think I'm amongst friends.

So........ I just received news that my son commited suicide this afternoon. I'm numb.

Oh my god James,

I'm going to go and see him in the morning... for the first time since... well, since I heard what he did. I must confess I'm scared. How will he look? How will I react?
Also tomorrow we get the coroners results, so we can start on funeral plans etc.
Is this real? Am I having a really sh1t dream? Will I ever be able to breathe again without it hurting?
