once i saw a tiger get really really pissed at another, obviously lesser tiger
it was at the zoo and i was within 15' of that tiger - close enough to get hit by a little spit spray from the roaring
it was quite intense

I decided it was time to retire the one with the parietalis couple, since I don't have one anymore. So it's the smaller of my t. e. vagrans (henceforth referred to as "Squeezy" on this forum, but not anywhere else), the one with the fused supralabial on one side.

Any Futurama fans here who'd like to guess what Squeezy's sister's name is?

the little anery radix, Scott sent me, died last night
it looks like he drowned in his water dish
I guess it's okay
he was always kind of limp and so painfully small
I did get him to take a teeny salmon sliver a few days ago and I'm not sure he was digesting it
we'd ended up calling him the little noodle

hey - can you believe it?
I almost got arrested today by a transit police officer, because the other adult and I decided to push the four kids through on one swipe and us adults on the second.
Two adults in one swipe is not legal, even if the kids are legally all free.
My logic was that there were two adults and we swiped two cards, but she wasn't into logic - very narrow point of view.
She made us go through this whole interrogation about our information and criminal history (none - I've always been a firm believer in keeping a low profile)
I was furious.
The older kids were all crying and at one point a perfect stranger stepped in with a comment that was met with an icy "Sir, you're interfering with a police intervention"
I do think it was him that turned the tide for us.
I think he must have stayed around, because shortly after she decided to let us go

Lori P
02-08-2008, 07:02 PM

oh this is not even the end
I posted this story on my neighbourhood list serve and some guy berated me for being angry at a police officer and called me irresponsible for letting the kids go through the turnstile ahead of us.
maybe he's right and I really am a no-good law-breaker with no respect for authority and an irresponsible mother to boot
okay - I'll cop to the no respect for authority part

Well, some people think that authority warrants respect in every situation. I don't. I know I have a "tiny" problem with authority, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

The more cops I get to know, the less I respect their authority. I went to school with some of our local cops, I know what they're like as people.

I totally agree with you there and most officers I've met have been nice and helpful and more likely to listen and give warnings.
I'd like to add though, that in many professions jerks don't have that much impact and one would hope that that's where they gravitate
a jerk in power is not a good situation

The police in my local area organise events with the kids like paint balling and bowling etc..., the kids now have respect in a funny sort of way...they will go and sit with them and chat...they seem to be more down to earth. I can't believe I'm sick again
yesterday was not a good day
I lost a snake I'd thought would come around
a small lump she'd always had, suddenly grew into a large abscess earlier this week.
I'd brought her to the vet on Thursday. She drained the thing and gave antibiotics.
on Friday the snake seemed okay, considering. Yesterday she was dead.
on top of that I feel like somebody hit me in the face with a board (sinus infection)

drache
02-10-2008, 05:46 AM
it was my female xenochrophis vittatus
now I have one male left
he was the one in the best condition when I first got them and he is in fine shape now
they were all scarred and had weird lumps and sores when I first got them, and most of it resolved
the other male I lost during the move and he later turned up dead in the basement
when these things happen I have to remind myself that I have over twenty snakes and a few other critters that are doing very well
somehow I feel so responsible
like - if I were really good at this, I could have saved them, even if they were in poor shape to begin with
I want to get better at this
but in the future, perhaps, if I want to save animals, I'll stick to the rescue, rather than buying wild caught asian imports

tikichick
02-10-2008, 06:30 AM
You did your best! There are so few people in this world who would even try. Sometimes we just can't save them all and it's heartbreaking because we care so much, but it's part of rescuing. I rescued a few emaciated and very young Savannah monitors a couple months ago and lost one after 6 weeks and another one last week. The remaining one still refuses to eat on his own so I'm still force feeding him. They were in such terrible shape and I knew it would be a miracle if they recovered, but I determined to give them every chance to recover. With both that died, I felt like a total failure, that I should have found someone else to fix them. Then I had to remind myself that some organs can't recover from starvation and it can't be reversed no matter what anyone tries. So I'll continue to give him the chance and hope he turns around. My other rescues have all been successful, but it takes just one failure to make me want to give up. But the reality is, if someone comes to me with a critter I feel I have the skills to care for, I know I'll do it because if I don't, who will?

I had a woman call me last week in a panic with a dying ball python and a sick one that belonged to her landlord. It was way beyond my expertise (I'm good with lizards, but new to snakes), so I referred her to another local rescue. I found out today that the dying one did indeed die and was frozen to be tested and the second one ended up at a different rescue (that's also on the local reptile forum) and is being treated for a bad URI. It was so hard not to rush over there and take the snakes and make her feel better about it! I much prefer the "hey, there's a 5 foot lizard in my backyard" calls, lol.

Anyway, I know how you feel and you are really good at this, so please don't even think about blaming yourself anymore :)

Had to share these. Ollie is a new rescue dog (he's been here about 3 weeks), and he and Rio the goat have been squabbling non stop since Ollie got here. But I think it's become more of a game at this point... she pulls his tail, he barks in her face, she butts the deck instead of him... and the turkeys keep the background soundtrack going!!

Please forgive the disaster that is my front yard. The dogs, pigs and goats had a field day last week with a bag of trash and I hadn't gotten around to cleaning it up yet. And Rio shredded a bag of charcoal on the porch. Welcome to my world, LOL!!!

My computer wouldn't start this morning. I have a vague idea what's broken, either my main hard drive or the motherboard (my guess is the latter, but I can't test them since I don't have a second compatible computer). Funny thing is, you can't just get a new motherboard, nobody sells anything even remotely compatible with my old processor, which means I have to buy a new processor, too. It is a wives tale, but, I can see where it originated because turkeys are non-stop curious and obsessed with all things shiny. I've seen mine staring up at the raindrops when it's a light rain. Also, mine never sleep under shelter at night, they roost in the trees... so maybe some kept penned without any shelter would have really drowned?? I think it was more bad management than mass rain-induced suicide... lol!!

I love them, they have sooooo much personality. Except, they come up onto the porch and drive the dgso nuts by pecking at the sliding glass doors, and then we have a turkey/dog free or all thru the windows... by the same note, Rio the goat tends to bash the glass doors when she's feeling negelcted. That's not so cute...LOL!!!

OK guys... my mice have not only NOT had babies yet (9 weeks now) but the male is getting the snot beat out of him by the female now!! Over the weekend he had some bites on his back, and this morning his ear was all bloody. Keep in mind, it's really not a space issue, they are in a 40 gallon tank with all sorts of hides, tunnels, tubes... so they can seperate as needed.

Advice? Recipes for mouse? LOL!! Do I have defective mice??
Both problems could be stress related. I don't mean it's a space issue, but they recommend that you keep several females per male, to take some of the pressure off the females.

Then again, sometimes they just don't get along. Or like somebody suggested, she could be preggers. ;)

good luck with those darn mice, Lori

yes, I do seem to have had one damn thing after another recently

right now I feel I've been sick so much, even taking care of my critters has become a chore

Lori P

Stefan, how are your mice doing? I think you're right about him maybe pestering her too much... I should have had two or three females to start, and I've been a little worried about introducing a new one. I think I'll wait this out and see if she's having a litter, and then try to introduce a new girl.

Rhea, you definitley need a mental boost to get you over this slump... let's get her a new slogan that's so sunny and bright she'll want to puke, you guys... oh, wait. You're probably tired of puking, huh? :-) I do hope you feel better soon. TURN THAT FROWN UPSIDE DOWN, RHEA!!!! (Ducking and running-- I don't know about you but that saying makes me want to kick the sayer in the head-- LOL)

Stefan-A

My mice are doing just fine. :) No fights yet. But the females look smaller than the male.

If that's your plan then I'd separate them for now and hope she's pregnant, or separate them and then reintroduce them together with a new female "on neutral ground".

the funny thing is that I don't feel so bad mentally or emotionally - a bit impatient perhaps
there are things that need to be done after all
feeling a little better today, but not ready for the big list
it's a good thing that snakes can go without food for a few days longer
water, lizard greens, and little misting is all I can handle right now
I do need some way to film Henner attacking a cat
yesterday he charged at one of them who came too close to his cage door
when he had chased the cat a sufficient distance, he ran back into his cage and did the most spectacular head bobbing display
I'd never seen him do that before
aside from the physical discomfort, being sick isn't so bad, just as long as nothing needs to be done

Well, be extra careful and watch your kids... we just heard something so horrible-- a little girl (she was 12) from my co-worker Kerry's son's school just died from complications from the FLU. The flu!!!!! How does a child die of the flu??? It must be a very bad strain. Kerry's son has been sick the last couple of days too and she just left to take him to the dr!!!! So BE CAREFUL....

anji1971
02-14-2008, 10:25 AM
The flu can be very dangerous for some kids. Because it is a respiratory virus, any child with asthma is automatically at high risk. And even in healthy kids it can settle in the lungs and become an infection or pneumonia.
I wonder if that child had their flu shot, it usually helps lessen the severity of the virus. My son gets one every year because of his asthma.
Scary stuff!!

Lori P
02-14-2008, 11:02 AM
Oh, I forgot that part-- yes, she had had her flu shot. :-( But I don't think the flu vaccines can keep up with the mutating viruses... maybe I'm wrong. Just SO SCARY to think of losing your child to something like the flu in this day and age, you know?? You always think we can cure everything these days... so tragic.

Sputnik
02-14-2008, 02:41 PM
But, Rhea, it's still very, very rare for a normally healthy person to be in danger of losing their life because of the flu. I'm sure you eat healthily and do all the right things now to regain your strength so you and your family are going to be well soon. Be kind to yourself, allow yourself to be spoiled and looked after, make sure you have got this one out of your system before returning to work so you can avoid a "Rueckschlag". :)

Mikhaila is responding really well to homeopathics
she has a fantastic immune system, which may be a bit dented by the fact that she hates her current class teacher and doesn't like going to school because of it
also - a large percentage of kids in her school and their parents are sick
anyway
I gave her a remedy this morning and she's having too good a time to be called properly sick
I have the wheezy thing I've been getting after colds and flus since 9/11/01 - the one my doc says she's seen a lot of since then
the good news is that it's a little less severe each year
I got to spend some time with snakes today - that was fun

anji1971
02-14-2008, 04:35 PM
Sounds like everyone is improving a bit, then. Good to hear, Rhea!
I tend to go for the homeopathic approach first when I get sick; echinacea, garlic and vitamin C make a good combo to fight colds and flu!
Whatever happened with the child Lori's friend knew must have been from some unforseen thing. Viruses can be so quirky that way, and who knows if the child didn't have some hidden medical condition that made it so disastrous.

Lori P
02-14-2008, 06:57 PM
Rhea, glad to hear you're feeling better and that Mikhaila is responding to the homeopathics!!!

The news here is full of the little girl who died. There have been two other child deaths from the flu, too. Apparently the kids appeared to be getting better but then they went into pneumonia pretty quickly... the schools are sending any kid who so much as looks sick home, and not letting them back in without a doctor's note. Scary stuff.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be an alarmist, I am just shocked that this happened and wanted to make sure Rhea watched Mikhaila. Kerry's son knew the little girl at his school who died and he's scared because he has the flu too-- poor poor kid!! :-(

anji1971
02-14-2008, 09:03 PM

that sounds like a really scary flu
in 2003 I had one that made me realize they're no joke
I was sick for more than two months and lost 20lbs, most of which I didn't need to loose
since then I've been having trouble keeping my weight up and every cold kinda scares me
I hope the children will all be okay and just have the flu pass

Well, I'm moaning and groaning this morning... (James, get your mind out of the gutter!)

Yesterday I went with the vet to help at a big cattle round up. I got to vaccinate the cows as they ran them through the chute, another guy dewormed, and the vet palpated for pregnancy. Sounds simple... lol... but nothing with cows is simple and it was a lot of cow wrangling and holding on while they tried anything to get out of the chutes. Cows are some ornery, stubborn critters, and it's amazing how high they can kick and jump. So after wrestling 100 cows, we then had to castrate the bull calves... it was a really fun day actually, once you got over the fact that no matter what, you were going to be covered in cow spit and manure... but oh man there's not anything on my that doesn't hurt today, LOL!!! I'm not anywhere near in the shape I used to be in... sigh... getting older is hell!!!

Stefan, can you give them some chewable Vitamin C... it can't hurt and might just boost their little immune systems enough to get them through it. If I could only find the cause. It's not draft, I've checked, it shouldn't be possible in that spot. The ventilation in the cage was maybe a bit worse than it should have been, but that has now been fixed. Maybe it's just allergic to something. A trip to the vet and antibiotics that don't work, are next on the list. Or maybe I should put it down myself. Maybe I should just stick to reptiles.

Yay! I'll probably get most of my computer tomorrow! The graphics card won't probably arrive until next week, though. The odd thing is, almost every online store was completely out of graphics cards.

glad to hear things are moving a long for ya though Stefan.........

Yeah right. ;) :D

I've been completely stressed out these last two weeks, because I've been forced to use other people's computers and haven't had access to all my stuff. I think I've been having genuine withdrawal symptoms. ;)

Two scenes from that movie remind me of jam. The spit-in-the-face scene and the elevator scene. ;)

Things are starting to look up, sort of. I got most of my computer parts, the one still missing is in the mail and should arrive on monday, all my snakes are still eating and both my female mice are fat and ready to pop any day now.

But the squeaking noises the male makes are still disconcerting and I expect the worst.

Squeaking noises?

Mice can be vocal when first put together or humping... then they squeak...

If they sound like they are chuntering or snuffling, then its a cold, and they very rarely recover without antibiotics...hes probably snake food!!

Stefan, glad your computer parts are coming in. I can't believe your mice are already preggers. I'm so jealous.

Inge, congrats on your rats giving birth. I'm so jealous. Lol!

I have an exciting thing going on here-- Mordecai and Miriam were both cruising the tank this evening looking for food, so I went ahead and fed them-- and little tiny Miriam just grabbed her SECOND pinky!!!!! I still can't believe she's going to get it down...

That's the conclusion I arrived at, it's definitely not normal communication. The hobbyists I've talked to also pointed out that he's probably snake food even with antibiotics. Anyway, we'll see what the vet has to say about his condition.

I always wanted to breed rats! ......my dad would kill me!

Lori P
02-24-2008, 03:38 PM
Well, I took the plunge last night and fed my two mice to the balls. I mean, they weren't breeding and she was still beating him up... and quite honestly, they were just to stinky to keep as pets.

The one thing I can say is, it was remarkably fast. I made myself stay and watch the first one because if it was horrible I was going to snatch the other one back out. But it wasn't-- it was VERY fast and not even a sqeak emerged. And wow, wow, wow what a difference in Squiggles' feeding reaction... instead of spending all evening (literally) trying to dangle the f/t mouse just right for her to get it, she actually fed herself in a split second...

Fluffy did not eat again, so Squiggles got both. Fluffy must be a on a serious hunger strike to not go after a live mouse.

The other thing I found interesting is that the mice were not scared-- I put them in the cage and they explored and climbed everything and even sat on Fluffy... LOL!!! Then when I moved them to Sqiggles' feeding tank they were the same-- no fear. So that made me feel a bit better. It was still a strange experience for me, but... it was obviously so good for Squiggles... it was so much more natural for her. It has me thinking...

Josh
02-24-2008, 04:06 PM
When i get my ball python i might use live as a way to stop a hunger strike but as i heard from your story it doesnt do much... you see you have to watch becaus they can cause a lot of harm to the snake. So if you think about it the benifits out way the risks. I have seen eye injuries which can infect and cause death.

Stefan-A
02-24-2008, 04:17 PM
They are indeed smelly, but they aren't that bad. But they sure are alot more work than all my snakes put together. I switched to wood- and paper-based pellets and they don't smell nearly as bad anymore. It has been an interesting experiment so far, but if the females got infected as well, then I'll abort. At least for now. Getting hold of three mice was enough trouble already.

My parietalis is big enough to swallow adult mice anyway, even if they're big enough to last her a month. ;)

Stefan-A
02-25-2008, 11:23 AM
Okay, so this is what happened today: Both my female mice gave birth, I have my computer up and running and because I changed a few parts, Microsoft now claims that I've used up my Windows XP license, so I have to call them up and beg them to activate it again. IMNSHO Microsoft can bite my shiny metal ***.

Ahhh, good old Microsoft. It's always something with them. That's why we have Linux running on our computer.
Glad to hear things are starting to sort themselves out now, though.
Congrats on your new batch of snake food!!!!:D

Stefan-A
02-25-2008, 03:30 PM
Good home made snake food. Should I kill them right away, or wait a week until they're slightly bigger? Should I maybe save a few and kill the rest? The snakes all need food. Week-old pinkies for vagrans and tetra and 2-3 week old mice for the parietalis. What are they, crawlers and hoppers?

Decisions, decisions..

not sure what his background is, but he's about two years old, and has a lovely personality - mellow, but not lame
I'll ask Sean where he came from
I just saw that he was in need of wet-bagging, and being that Sean's a busy guy, I offered to heap some extra attention on this - now named Mr Triapis Foster

I received a text from her last week (or the week before?) with a recent photo of her tetras and the promise of her imminent return.

The cat was in another room, so I don't know. It just came from nowhere, the glass started rattling then the house was shaking, then my chair which is on wheels started rolling across the floor. By that time it was pretty loud and scary. I've felt the odd tremor before, but nothing like this.

I guess they're pretty rare in the UK, Anji. I think on this occassion the epicentre was half way between Lulu and I!;)
