I bought a baby Baird's Rat Snake (Pantherophis/Elaphe bairdi) on Thursday last week. It's unsexed, but looks and acts healthy and is eating. Tongue is flickering actively and the snake is already vibrating it's tail like a rattlesnake. Hoping it's a male so it get's to be a larger size. The other new snakes I got are ordinoides from a small island just off of the boatlaunch near my house. The island is no more than a few acres in size, and it isolates the huge snake population it has. I must have seen over 50 snakes all just by my campsite on one side of the island. 1 in 5 snakes was full on melanistic. These were the biggest ordies I'd ever seen too. Some of the big females must have been 3 feet. And every single female looked gravid. I caught two males and a female. The female is melanistic with a rusty-red stripe. One of the males is melanistic and has a couple rusty spots, but no where near as much as the other one. And the final male is a little red stripe one that is very dark but has a beautiful reddish-brown to it's sides. I didn't think the red could come through in melanism. I am very excited to see what/if this girl drops this summer. I will post up some pictures soon.
