In my 20 gallon I have a fairly large water dish on the cool end of the tank. I just got a mist bottle and was wondering how often should I spray or do I even have to. I am using aspen bedding and the hot side gets to about 82F?

You can set that temp. on the warm side up around 90° in my opinion.
I think you should buy a humidity gauge to place inside the enclosure so you don't have to guess or wonder where your humidity is at.

Something like this would work fine.

Ok when I get it what is a good relative humidity for it to be at?

I live in central NC, and the humidity is usually pretty good without any sort of misting, especially during summer.

When the question has come up in the past the consensus tends to land around 50%. Some think higher, but my humidity is usually around 50% and my garters are healthy and shed well.

You certainly can, and should have it at least 86 as long as the ambient temp on the cool end doesn't go higher than 70-75. Personally I do that about 13 hours a day but turn off heat at night unless I just fed them, and let the temp drop to 70 at night.

Humidity really isn't that critical. not something you need to sweat over. Just don't let it get below 30% or above 80% and they will be just fine. Above all, don't keep substrate damp for the sake of humidity. Keep it dry and clean. I only mist if its time to shed and the humidity is very low.

Same here, I never do anything for humidity.
